WELCOME TO SOUTHWELL

Welcome to this All-Weather Championship Fixture, part of the All-Weather Championships which culminate at Newcastle Racecourse on Good Friday this year. Thank to sponsors, Betway, Mansionbet and Coral for their generosity in sponsoring all the races in the during Championships. We are now one enclosure so please feel free to use the space on the ground and first floors of the Grandstand. To manage your expectations, with small crowds anticipated this time our year not all of the Food and Drink outlets will be open at all times. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact either myself, one of the team around the course or the Racecourse Office. We hope you enjoy the competitive racing and friendly nature of our Racecourse. Good luck. MARK CLAYTON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Southwell Racecourse is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

DOGS

Racegoers are not permitted to bring dogs into any enclosure. In car parks dogs must be kept on leads at all times. During hot weather it should be remembered that Police and RSPCA officials reserve the right to force entry into any vehicle to release an animal if suffering.

DRESS CODE

No T Shirts, casual shorts or trainers are permitted in the Premier Enclosure. Shirts must be worn at all times in all enclosures.

FOOD & DRINK

Although alcohol is not permitted to be brought onto the Racecourse, and in some cases bags will be searched at the entrances, picnics are permitted on the lawn adjacent to the track itself but not in any other areas. You are requested not to take glass bottles and glasses outside of the bars, hospitality and restaurant areas.

RACE CONDITIONS

Today’s race conditions can be found on page 31 of this racecard.

SAFETY

In the interests of public safety all visitors to the racecourse must follow the directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Raceday Staff throughout the racecourse. Please do not leave bags or your possessions unattended at any time as this could cause a security alert. Please be aware that horses can be unpredictable, therefore care and attention is necessary within the vicinity of the horses. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL DRINK AND/OR GLASSES BE ALLOWED ON TO GRANDSTANDS, VIEWING AREAS IN FRONT OF GRANDSTANDS OR AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE PARADE RING. RACEGOERS DISREGARDING THIS REGULATION OR BEHAVING IN A DISORDERLY MANNER WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE RACECOURSE.

SMOKING

Smoking is not permitted inside any buildings but is permitted in all outdoor areas, this includes the use of all electronic cigarettes that omit vapour.

VETERINARY CARE

Horse welfare is a priority at Southwell. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

OF O F F ICI I C I A L BH BH A R A AT T I NG N G S E X PL PL A I N E D The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

DUCAL CROWN showed enough on debut at Kempton last month to suggest she can take a step forward to win an event like this. Ruby Ruby and Naasma are both interesting newcomers representing leading yards so they have to be feared on debut too.

PLUPERFECT took a big step forward on just her second run at Kempton last month. She shaped as though she may have needed the outing following a break and she should appreciate the shorter trip today. She makes most appeal. Social Contact sets a solid standard on her two runs to date and she’ll be a danger. Makarova looks a likely improver following her encouraging debut too.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): I Furtado (34 wins from 250 runners, 14%) runs KIRITIMATI ISLAND TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): A Balding (5 wins from 19 runners, 26%) runs BERKSHIRE PHOENIX LONGEST TRAVELLERS: BECOMING trained by R Charlton, Beckhampton, 144 miles. BERKSHIRE PHOENIX trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 144 miles. RACE SUMMARY

A few in with chances but KIRITIMATI ISLAND shaped very well (stayed on strongly having missed the break) on his handicap debut over 5f here 18 days ago. With this step back up in trip sure to suit, Ivan Furtado’s charge can open his account. Berkshire Phoenix hasn’t always looked straightforward but he’s feared most after his recent second at Kempton, ahead of Gidwa and Becoming.
