RACEDAY MON 7 SEPT
FT. THE GROUP 3 WINTER HILL STAKES OFFICIAL RACEDAY PROGRAMME | £3.50
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai the UAE’s leading distributor of horse feeds and supplements proudly sponsors the Owners & Trainers facilities at Royal Windsor Racecourse
WELCOME Welcome everyone today to the first of our two afternoon fixtures here at Royal Windsor Racecourse in September. After a very busy summer of 21 racedays from May to August, along with multiple music festivals and big events, there is definitely an ‘end of term’ feel at the racecourse now that September is here, which is ironic just as kids are all heading back to school across the country! That being said, we are really excited about today’s racecard, which includes our one Group 3 race of the year with the Winter Hill Stakes over 1m 2f with a sizeable prize purse of £95,000. As ever, we are hugely appreciative of our big race sponsor, Weatherbys, for their on-going support and also to Matchbook, who have agreed to extend their sponsorship for the final two fixtures. Thank you to Nick Craven at Weatherbys and Lee Beauchamp at Matchbook for everything you have done to facilitate this support. I would also like to extend our appreciation to all guests associated with the Hamish Johnson Memorial and G J Colairo races and hope you will enjoy your Windsor experience today. With only two fixtures left of the Flat season here at Windsor, attention turns to the Leading Jockey and Leading Trainer standings. Oisin Murphy may have won the last two season’s Leading Jockey standings at a canter, but this season is proving a closer affair with Oisin now on 14 wins followed by Rossa Ryan on 11 wins and Billy Loughnane on 10 wins. At the time of writing both Oisin and Rossa are booked in for rides at Windsor tonight, it is unclear whether Billy will be joining them. As for the Leading Trainer standings, Tony Carroll has a comfortable lead of 4 wins over George Boughey (11 v 7) following a hot streak here back in June and it would be a major surprise to see his lead overturned. All that remains for me to say is thank you to everyone for coming along this afternoon and I hope you have a very enjoyable and successful few hours here. Jimmy Wallace Executive Director

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
ABBREVIATIONS BF - Beaten Favourite C - Course winner D - Distance winner CD - Course & Distance winner
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

ARNAZ wasn’t seen to ideal effect but still emerged with a lot of credit when sixth in a big field at Brighton last time and can quickly bounce back to winning ways here to bag a third success of 2026. Good Earth has slipped to his last winning mark and heads the list of dangers, while Yes Walim, Stock Market and Lahina Bay also need factoring into this very open handicap. 1-2-3: 1.ARNAZ 2.GOOD EARTH (IRE) 3.YES WALIIM (IRE) KEY Owner colours

Raaheeb
Baaeed’s brother Raaheeb heads co Weatherbys Winter Hill Stakes line him perfectly, and connections have had their eyes on it for some time. Burrows confirms: “We’ve had it in mind for quite a while. There was no point in looking much before it for Raaheeb the way the weather has been, and we were pleased to see they had a fair bit of rain at Windsor last weekend. This looks like a good spot for him, so let’s just hope it doesn’t dry out too much. We just want safe ground. “I gather the conditions have been reframed to provide a nice opportunity for later developing three-year-olds, and that’s exactly what Raaheeb is, because for him it’s all about next year. It’s helpful from my point of view that it’s only for three-year-olds now, and the timing is good too, as there aren’t a lot of alternatives for him right now.” Reflecting on the Irish Derby run, where a promising effort petered out and Raaheeb was treading water in the closing stages, he says: “Rossa (Ryan) thought the mile and a half was stretching him there, as he travelled good for an inexperienced horse and the feel he was getting turning in had him thinking he was going to get involved. Whether it was just immaturity I don’t know, but I don’t think we’ll be going a mile and a half again this year.” He adds: “Rossa came in and rode him in a bit of work last week, and he was pleased with him. He’s in good form and showing all the right signs. Depending on how he runs at Windsor there’s the Prix Dollar at Longchamp on Arc weekend, and he’s also in the Champion Stakes. We’ll make a plan after Monday, but he
Sandown Classic Trial winner Raaheeb heads a strong field of seven for a new-look and repositioned Weatherbys Global Stallions App Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor, which provides a rare opportunity for us all to enjoy Group 3 action on a Monday. The Winter Hill Stakes has traditionally been run on the same Saturday evening as last weekend’s Weatherbys August Stakes, but as clerk of the course Charlie Rees explains: “It has been moved back by one week and, as part of a wider Pattern Committee initiative, is now restricted to three-year-olds only. The change is designed to create a more defined opportunity for later-maturing threeyear-old middle-distance horses while reducing overlap with similar races elsewhere in the programme.” In attracting runners with Raaheeb’s class and untapped potential it has clearly fulfilled that aim. Few will need reminding that Owen Burrows’ Shadwell colt is a full brother to both Baaeed and Hukum, for when his highly promising debut win at Ascot a year ago was followed by an impressive reappearance in the Sandown Group 3 it looked as if he might well one day reach similar heights. He still might. While the Derby came too soon for him, he was sent instead for the Irish equivalent at the Curragh, where he acquitted himself respectably in fourth behind Benvenuto Cellini but looked a suspect stayer at the trip. This race, back over a mile and a quarter in somewhat calmer waters, ought to suit

Morris Dancer
afterwards will be dictated by how he runs here, but he’s lightly raced and we haven’t got to the bottom of him. He’s got loads of options and I expect he’ll stay in training.” John and Thady Gosden have two representatives. The Godolphin-owned Morris Dancer, who is by the stable’s star miler Palace Pier, was third in the seven-furlong Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot but disappointed over an extra furlong at Newmarket next time. He steps up another two furlongs here but should be involved if he stays. Stable-companion Harmonics, who carries the Ace Stud silks, has a bit to find on the figures, but his latest unlucky-inrunning fifth in a red-hot Goodwood handicap strongly suggested we haven’t seen the best of him yet. Godolphin have a second representative in Maho Bay, who looked a live Derby outsider when making all at Newmarket in the spring. He came up short in the Lingfield trial but was unlucky in running when a close fifth in Royal Ascot’s Hampton Court and is another who has more to offer this autumn. The field is completed by the Ralph Beckett-trained filly On Message, a onetime Oaks candidate who recorded a clear personal best over this trip in a Listed race at Salisbury last time, and Jack Channon’s Crest Of Fire, who steps into Group-race territory for the first time after overcoming severe traffic problems to win a decent handicap at Goodwood last time. None can be discounted in a thoroughly competitive line-up.
definitely stays in training.” If Raaheeb is even half as good as an older horse as Baaeed and Hukum were then there’s a lot to look forward to. However, while this looks every bit as good a spot for him as Burrows says it is, it’s not a bad spot for some of his rivals either so it’s unlikely to be a cakewalk. Andrew Balding, who recently enjoyed a stunning five Group 1 wins in six weeks, saddles a strong candidate in Venetian Prince, who came from off the pace to land the Derby Italiano but then found the ground too quick for him when last of five in Royal Ascot’s King Edward VII Stakes. He won’t have things easy with his 5lb Group 2 penalty, but merits a deal of respect nevertheless. David Bowe, representing ownerbreeder Jeff Smith and his Littleton Stud operation, is another who has had this race in mind for a while. He says: “He didn’t like firm ground at Ascot and looked after himself but the ground at Windsor shouldn’t present any problems. Although it was bordering on heavy in Italy he won on good, or even fastish, ground as a two-year-old so it shouldn’t be an issue. The trip will be fine for him too. “Owen Burrows’colt is a seriously good horse and we have to give him a couple of pounds, so it’s not an easy race for Venetian Prince, but Andrew has him in good shape and the conditions look absolutely perfect for him. “He’s a lovely horse and nicely bred, and we are still figuring him out to an extent as things haven’t gone his way on one or two occasions. Where we go

for the first time, and he was denied a clear passage when fifth at Glorious Goodwood last time. Ralph Beckett’s On Message saw her Listed success at Salisbury boosted recently and is the sole filly in the line-up.
Top-rated on official figures is Owen Burrows’s Raaheeb, a full-brother to the outstanding Baaeed and Hukum, who has already upheld plenty of family honour. A winner on debut at two, he dominated the Group 3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on his threeyear-old debut. While he was perhaps stretched by the trip when fourth in the Irish Derby at the Curragh last time, he had travelled stylishly through the race before stamina told and he sets a high standard dropping back down in trip.
Andrew Balding’s Venetian Prince, out of the Group 1-winning Arabian Queen and a half-brother to the smart mare See The Fire, was a well-beaten tenth in the 2,000 Guineas, but bounced back to win the Group 2 Derby Italiano at San Siro, exactly 45 years after Balding’s father won the same race. He must bounce back from a disappointing effort at Royal Ascot but has been given a break since and will prefer conditions here.
Crest Of Fire has progressed through the handicap ranks John and Thady Gosden saddle Morris Dancer for Godolphin, a Palace Pier colt who won a Listed race at Salisbury by a wide-margin last summer. He returned with an excellent third in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot but was well below his best when last seen in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes. This will be his first attempt beyond a mile. Harmonics is also trained by John and Thady Gosden. The Lucky Vega colt steps up from handicap company WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW
Charlie Appleby is represented by Godolphin’s Maho Bay, a Dubawi colt who was unbeaten in visually striking fashion on his first two starts, the second of those a wide-margin Newmarket novice success on reappearance. He caught the eye when a close fifth in the Hampton Court Stakes last time, keeping on when denied a clear run, and must hold strong claims with William Buick in the saddle. Jack Channon’s grey gelding Crest Of Fire has progressed through the handicap ranks all season, winning a Southwell maiden by ten lengths on his reappearance before running well in valuable handicaps. He got his head in front again at Glorious Goodwood last time out and steps up into pattern company for the first time here.

Ed Walker’s Masar newcomer Saaffya could emerge as the one to chase home the Gosdens’ highly promising Starman filly ahead of Yamnah and Aura Champagne. 1-2-3: 1.WITHOUT PREJUDICE (IRE) 2.SAAFFYA 3.YAMNAH (FR) KEY Owner colours
