All leading to the industry's most valuable raceday. britishchampionsseries.com

SPONSORS WELCOME

On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, I am proud and delighted to welcome you to what promises to be another exceptional QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket.

This world-famous meeting featuring the year’s first two British Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, has been a part of our sponsorship portfolio since the launch of QIPCO British Champions Series in 2011 The innovative series begins this weekend and runs until QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October, incorporating the Flat season’s biggest prizes and festivals and showcasing the preeminent human and equine participants.

Our support for the sport does not end with sponsorship; we want to encourage the next generation of racegoers Last year we launched ‘Club 26’ in conjunction with QIPCO British Champions Series, in order to bring 18 to 26-year-olds closer to the action.

This free-to-join initiative has had an enormously successful first 12 months and has offered discounted tickets to 26 of the best racedays in the calendar, featuring all 35 races in QIPCO British Champions Series as well as members events and behindthe-scenes tours. One has been scheduled nearby this very weekend, with fans invited to visit the historic Dalham Hall Stud. Under 18s are also admitted free through all three days here.

The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, marking the 10th anniversary of our sponsorship. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Henry Cecil and Frankie Dettori are among the luminaries

to have been inducted so far, along with cherished horses such as Frankel, Sea The Stars and Pebbles.

This year’s newest inductee should need little introduction as Aidan O’Brien is celebrated as among the greatest trainers in history already and has dominated Group 1 races around Europe for more than two decades.

My brothers and I share a deep respect for racing’s history and our own passion has been stoked by the action at the QIPCO Guineas Festival. Not long after the birth of Qatar Racing, we finished second in the 200th running of the QIPCO 1000 Guineas with Just The Judge. Then, four years ago, we were granted an unforgettable success as our beloved colt Kameko became the fastest ever winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas

Record-breaking Kameko, victorious at this meeting in 2020, is now among the Qatar Racing stallions at our ownership and breeding operation at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire and his first runners are hitting the track.

While we are hopeful that his sons and daughters will be shining brightly, we wish all connections similar good fortunes throughout 2024 QIPCO British Champions Series and look forward to celebrating another memorable season in this sport that provides us all with so much joy.

A warm welcome to Newmarket Racecourse and to QIPCO 2000 Guineas Day.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank both QIPCO and British Champions Series for their support across the three days of the QIPCO Guineas Festival here at the Rowley Mile

We are also extremely grateful to William Hill, who sponsor races across the day, and World Pool and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, who we are partnering with for all nine races.

The feature race today is the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the first Classic of the British turf season. The Group 1 was first run in April 1809, and was named according to its’ original prize fund. Since the race’s inception, some of the true greats of flat racing have made their way onto the roll of honour, including Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard and Dancing Brave, whilst more recently Frankel and Kameko are some of the leading names to have taken the honours.

Head down to the Garden Enclosure to enjoy the British Champion Series Fan Zone, which includes a bouncy castle, inflatable helter skelter and a Jockey Master Class ahead of racing On the Boulevard Lawn, Keith Deller and Russ Bray will be providing a chance to test your darts skills throughout the afternoon in the British Champions Series Sports Village Have a go on our F1 simulator, or take your chances at human table football!

Make sure to stick around after racing, with The Cutkelvins taking to the stage for a fun upbeat performance down at the Hyperion Lawn

Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, where the fillies will take centre stage in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas Tickets for tomorrow will be available on the gate for all those interested

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.

Warm wishes,

Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.

History of Newmarket

Although humankind has raced horses since the dawn of civilisation – racing was an event at the ancient Greek Olympiads, for example – it is only in relatively recent history that it has been staged on an organised basis. In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole, the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain, became concerned at the popularity of racing and the level of malpractice in the sport resulting from gambling. As a result, Walpole’s government introduced laws on minimum prize money values and weights to be carried in races The new laws proved ineffectual in its efforts to make racing less popular but it did have an impact on a group of racing enthusiasts who, fearing further government interference, came together in the coffee houses of London to form their own regulatory body for racing And so, in 1750 The Jockey Club emerged. Despite its name, The Jockey Club was not made up of jockeys but more members of high society – it was an 18th Century tradition that members of trades and professions were referred to by a description of their occupation – so what Mr Justice Hangem was to the judiciary, those connected to the racing would be known as Mr Jockie (the old spelling of Jockey) followed by surname. For example, an early member of The Jockey Club was Captain Richard Vernon – known in horseracing circles as “Mr Jockie Vernon”. The early activities of The Jockey Club were centred on the Star & Garter tavern on London’s Pall Mall, before it established its first formal London headquarters in Old Bond Street

While The Jockey Club was formally established and headquartered in London, Newmarket had emerged as the pre-eminent venue for horseracing in Great Britain under the dynasty of the House of Stuart. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land and built a coffee house in the Suffolk town, a building which still exists today and has been beautifully restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket was strengthened by the activities of one of its 19th Century members, Lord George Bentinck

It was Bentinck who provided the funds which enabled The Jockey Club to purchase the freehold of the land where The Jockey Club Rooms now stand. As the owner as a large expanse ofNewmarketHeath,Bentinckturnedacresofscrublandovertograssandpurchasedterritory adjacent to it to establish the gallops which still exist to this day. The link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club remains as strong as ever to this day. The historic Jockey Club Rooms, which were rebuilt and expanded in the 20th Century, house one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world and serve as accommodation for visiting members of The Jockey Club as well as being available to members of the public on a commercial basis The Jockey Club also operates the two racecourses in Newmarket –the Rowley Mile and the July Course - operates and maintains the gallops in the town under the banner of Jockey Club Estates and also runs The National Stud, a renowned and highlyregarded centre of breeding excellence.

The connection between Newmarket and the horse is one of great antiquity. Queen Boadicea of the Iceni founded a Royal stud at Exning in the years following the death of Jesus Christ. Refusing to surrender to the Romans in 60AD Queen Boadicea took her own life by poisoning, leaving behind a legacy of a section of heathland south of Exning. That heathland contained six miles of earthwork fortifications which in time became to be referred to as the Devil’s Dyke It was more than 1,000 years after the death of Queen Boadicea that Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” on land just south of Exning he had acquitted from the marriage dowry of his bride Cassandr d’I’Isle. The “New Market” developed into the town of Newmarket, which saw its population increase substantially in 1227 as people settled there to escape the plague. In the 17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I and he moved the Royal court to the town for a time and built a palace. It was James’s courtiers who first raced horses on Newmarket Heath, with the first match race recorded as having taken place on March 8th 1622 Newmarket was further developed by James’s son Charles I who erected the first Grandstand on Newmarket Heath and by his grandson Charles II On his restoration to the throne in 1660, Charles II built a new palace in Newmarket which included a secret passage to the home of his mistress Nell Gwynn. The “Merry Monarch” was a proficient rider and won the first running of the Town Plate – a unique contest for amateur riders which exists to this day – on October 14th 1671.

RACE ONE

Funny Story just got up in the final strides for her first victory in Listed company over C&D in October and Ralph Beckett’s filly has to be high on the shortlist, despite giving 3lb and upwards to her rivals. A chance, though, is taken on Nell Gwyn fifth HERITAGE HOUSE, who outran her odds making late gains in a contest where it paid to be ridden handy. With the hood off and dropping back a furlong in trip, she makes plenty of appeal Others to consider include Unequal Love and Star Guest.

RACE TWO

Noble Style looked a potential star when taking the Gimcrack at York in August 2022 before the wheels fell off after running well in the 2000 Guineas on this card last year Freshened up after disappointing on his final start at Chester, he will undoubtedly be popular dropping into handicap company. Aberama Gold (third) fared best of those who reoppose from a C&D handicap at the Craven meeting, but stable companion SUMMERGHAND, an eye-catching fifth on that occasion, proved there is still plenty of life left in the 10-year-old yet and he gets the nod.

RACE THREE

TORITO progressed nicely in the early part of last season and announced himself as a smart individual when taking a handicap at Epsom that worked out to be a strong piece of form The son of Kingman didn’t get the clearest of passages when finishing fourth in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he took this en route to bigger things later in the season There are a plethora of dangers, though, headed by Theoryofeverything, Dutch Decoy and Liberty Lane

RACE FOUR

A dab hand when it comes to the training of sprinters, Charlie Hills looks to have acquired a talented recruit in the shape of MITBAAHY, who caught the eye when slowly away and staying on late over 6f in the Abernant last month Conditions look to be in his favour again and this previous Group 3-winner is narrowly preferred to the returning Beautiful Diamond, who was a taking winner in Listed company at Ayr on her latest start. Vadream’s connections will behopingforplentyofrainintheforecastinherbidtorepeatlastyear’ssuccess, whileTwilightCallsremainsacapableindividualwhenthingsfallright

RACE FIVE

One of the best two-year-olds we have seen this century with a rating of 125, CITY OF TROY is a clear standout as his master trainer bids to land this contest for an 11th time. RACE SIX

MAXI KING could not have won any easier on his return from a 383-day absence at Ripon last month and an 8lb rise for that success looks manageable as he goes up to 1m4f for the first time. The son of Belardo may have too much for the progressive Knightswood, who was an excellent second over this distance at Ripon last month Real Dream won first time out last season and must be noted, as well as To Catch A Thief for his in-form connections.

RACE SEVEN

DAPPER VALLEY is taken to reverse last-time-out form with Trefor and land the spoils He travelled best for a long way in the aforementioned contest, and finished first of 10 in the near side group, so any improvement from that comeback run could make him difficult to beat Trefor looks to have improved from two to three himself, though, and certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Moswaat, Shagraan and Two Tribes add further spice to the race.

RACE EIGHT

CHRISTIAN DAVID is a colt that looks to be learning all the time and there was much to like about his neck third in a 0-100 handicap at Newbury. Dropped in class today, with Ryan Moore taking over the reins, he is fancied to play a leading role. Key To Cotai ended last season with a narrow C&D defeat and commands plenty of respect after her pleasing reappearance effort over 6f at Wolverhampton She can figure prominently under Tom Marquand, while Pressure’s On, Purefoy and Pitney are other names to note

RACE NINE

Pjanoo readily justified favouritism at Wolverhampton and warrants plenty of respect returning to turf off an 8lb higher mark, while Arthur’s Realm and Farasi Lane are other last-time-out winners to consider A chance, however, is taken on the returning CRACK SHOT. He can easily be forgiven his latest effort, finishing midfield in the Cambridgeshire over 1m1f here, and holds solid claims on the form of his Newbury success prior to that Rowayeh has the ability to figure on her reappearance but needs to settle.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

The Ellen Chaloner Stakes

The first race today, the Ellen Chaloner Stakes, formerly the Kilvington Stakes is named after someone many racegoers might not be aware of.

Ellen Chaloner was the first woman trainer in Britian which she became in 1886 following the death of her husband Tom, a ten time Classic winning jockey who also trained Scot Free to win the 1884 2000 Guineas.

Ellen, who was born in Middleham in 1846, was steeped in racing. Her father John Osborne snr was a trainer and her brother John Osborne jnr rode twelve Classic winners including the 1869 Derby on Pretender Ellen’s brother rode the winner of the 2000 Guineas six times, the last in 1888 when aged 55.

Stepping up to replace her husband, Ellen trained from Osborne House, Newmarket where Group 1 winning trainer Sir Mark Prescott now trains from A remarkable lady Ellen ran a family of seven, six boys and girl and trained horses between 1886 and 1894

Her biggest achievement came in 1887 when her filly Jersey Lily, who had run unplaced in that year’s Oaks won the Triennial Stakes at Royal Ascot, now the Jersey Stakes, to become the first woman to train a winner at the Royal meeting. Ellen’s son George rode the filly George missed a Derby victory coming 2nd in 1895 and 3rd in 1894.

Ellen died in March 1944 aged 98 and was closely associated with the racing scene in Newmarket all her life

UntilrecentlyEllenwasburiedinanunmarkedgraveinNewmarketcemetery, across the road from the Rowley Mile course, but following a campaign by members of her family, led by Marietta Krikhaar, Ellen’s great granddaughter, and supported by the Jockey Club, a beautifully designed headstone recognising the trailblazing trainer was erected in October 2023.

A ceremony to unveil two headstones for Ellen, Tom, and members of her family on 21st October was attended by Simon Bailey, the National Chaplain to Horse Racing, Sir Mark Prescott, and many family members.

Members of Ellen’s family are at the races today to celebrate this special lady in the history of turf.

For those of you at the Rowley Mile today spare a thought for Ellen

For more details of Ellen’s story, you will find a podcast recorded live at the Jockey Club rooms in Newmarket in March 2023 to celebrate International Women’s Day on The Paddock and The Pavilion’s YouTube channel.

SPOTLIGHT ON KAMEKO AND TWEENHILLS STUD

KAMEKO

THE FASTEST QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS WINNER

The 2020 running of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas may have been staged behind closed doors due to the ongoing restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic but that did not prevent a highly memorable renewal on the track with a new race-record time being set

A field of 15 went to the post for the 212th staging of the mile Classic with the market headed at 5-6 by the Godolphin-owned Pinatubo, who had been unbeaten in six runs as a juvenile culminating with victory in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes on the Rowley Mile. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 QIPCO 2000 Guineas was held a month later than normal on June 6th and all runners were making their seasonal debut.

Among Pinatubo’s 15 rivals was a colt called Kameko, an American-bred son of Kitten’s Joy who had been purchased by David Redvers for Qatar Racing at Keeneland in 2018. Sent into training with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, Kameko made an instant impact on the racecourse when successful in a maiden at Sandown Park in July 2019. After two narrow defeats back at Sandown Park in the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, Kameko ended 2019 in perfect style when successful in the Group One Futurity Trophy Stakes, which that year was run on Tapeta at Newcastle following the abandonment of Doncaster due to waterlogging.

Partnered in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas by Oisin Murphy, as he was throughout his career, Kameko travelled strongly throughout. He began to make a forward move a quarter of a mile from home and stayed on strongly to take the lead inside the final furlong. He went on to win by a neck from Wichita with Pinatubo another length away in third. The winning time of 1m 34.72s was the fastest in 2000 Guineas history. Andrew Balding commented afterwards: “The biggest regret of dad’s career was not winning the Guineas, it’s good to have it on the CV.

“It’s a massive thrill. We’ve been looking forward to the race for a long time but the Guineas is the Guineas whenever it is run I’m thrilled for Oisin, the Qatar Racing team and everyone at Kingsclere.”

Kameko went on to race a further five times, including finishing fourth in the Derby at Epsom Downs and making a successful return to Newmarket in the Group Two Joel Stakes.

He currently stands as a stallion at Tweenhills Farm & Stud in Gloucestershire with his first two-year-olds on the track this season.

Meet the team at Tweenhills

David Redvers

Owner and Manager of Tweenhills

What makes Kameko the great horse he is?

He’s the ultimate Thoroughbred - an amazing two-year-old, a Group One-winner who went on to win the fastest QIPCO 2000 Guineas in history, which is the race that forges the breed. That’s what we’re looking for – a Classic-winning miler at three.

Kameko is exactly what you’re looking for in a stallion His racecourse performances were exactly what you need as a stallion, and physically he’s very athletic and light on his feet. Great strength with a mixture of American Speed and European stamina. The thing that makes him really stand out, is his wonderful attitude. He wants to help, and he’s got this will to win, which is what sets him apart.

What helped make him so successful?

He was incredibly easy to train, Andrew Balding used to describe him as the ultimate dude. He came out wanting to do it From a trainer’s perspective, the ease of training a horse is a massive part of it Not only did Kameko have this incredible physiology, he also had the longest stride, the quickest recovery and the slowest heart rate. He had this amazing will to do it for you. He was a trainer’s dream

Do you see the same attributes as he had as a racehorse?

Its coming full cycle. His attributes have passed down into his stock. Trainers have been telling us how much they love working with his progeny, they come out with high energy but are sensible at the same time. They’re willing, and this is what we don’t

usually hear about. Its normally the results, but of course we haven’t had these yet as that’s still to come

Arethereanytwo-year-oldsinparticular you’reexcitedtosee?

Qatar Racing have about a dozen in training currently, and Tweenhills and partners have a good number of Kameko’s in training too. I’m terribly excited to see the first two-year-olds. Theres a lovely one at James Ferguson’s out of Ripples Maid, she is due to run shortly Andrew Balding has a number there that he’s raving about quietly, I can tell when he’s excited about them. Our entire operation is about identifying talent and racing it. Going full cycle and then having their progeny race. It’s all about what comes next

HowdidKamekocometostandatTweenhills afterhisracingcareer?

All of the Qatar Racing stallions ended up standing at Tweenhills and we couldn’t wait to get Kameko back after the Breeders Cup. He’s been here ever since and has never missed a day since He looks out of his stable door behind me, straight into our kitchen window as Roaring Lion did before him

What’sKamekoliketohavearound?

He is the ultimate dude. I wouldn’t say he’s a pony club pony in the background but he’s not far off it. He would come into the kitchen if he could and he’s very much part of the family! What’s lovely is that Kameko is still at the affordable stage, and we’ve been lucky that some of the team have been able to breed their own.

LetstalkabouttheGuineas.WhyistheQIPCO Guineassuchanimportantrace?

The QIPCO 2000 Guineas for the last 12 years has put up champion after champion. It’s the race that people with potential stallions want to win. A mixture of precocity and speed, along with the ability to stay one of the stiffest miles. The Guineas has taken on the mantle and is more relevant in the modern day than ever We’ve seen the champion two-year-old every year compete in it It is the race that we’re all after and there is no race that matches is. We’re all mad keen to have a top two-year-old, and a Group One winning two year old. The second they pass the line of a Group One race at two, the question is asked if they are good enough for the Guineas Being in a position to compete in the 2000 Guineas means you’re competing at the very top of the tree.

Onestowatchfortoday?

We will all be watching Coolmore’s Justify horse, City of Troy and if he can live up to the hype that has been generated over the winter Him aside, it’s a very open race and whatever happens you can be certain that a horse that wins it will be the name that is on everyones lips.

Ivo Thomas

Assistant Manager at Tweenhills

Whatdoesyourdaytodaylooklike?

The general running of the yard, checking the horses are happy. Past my role, I look after Kameko and Lightning Spear every day. Kameko has a great personality and is a bit cheeky, but he makes you smile every day. He loves to be fed early every day, and always calls out to me each morning. He’s a pleasure to be with and is a professional at his stud role.

WhatdoesKameko’snormalroutinelooklike?

Kameko covers around three times a day, with a 5-hour break in between to give him some down time. He gets fed breakfast around 6 am and then enjoys the walker before his first cover of the day. If the sun is shining, he gets to go back out after his lunchtime cover, and he loves to graze and chill out. It definitely helps with their fertility which is of course important for us Before the season starts, we focus on building up his fitness around November time, we use four main ways to get him fit: Walker, Hand walking, Lunging, Treadmill. The combination of all of these build-up his muscles, and improve his fitness after a summer in the field.

Arethereanyparticulartwo-year-olds you’reexcitedtoseethisyear?

They’re like Mini Kameko’s, you can see them a mile off! Ripple Effect is definitely one to watch and hopefully she can carry the flag for us I love following their progression from when they’re born to when they leave us, learn their quirks and individual traits It’s nice to know that when they reach the track you’ve had a part to play.

Howdoesitfeeltolookafterthefastest Guineaswinnereveryday?

It’s a real privilege knowing what he had done on the track. Keeping everything crossed that no one breaks his record today!

Tellusaboutyourownmare?

I have a lovely Dark Angel mare called Angelic Guest who has just had her own Kameko, two-week-old colt He might be the second fastest Guineas winner! She’s returning to Kameko this year, it’s all going to plan so far and hopefully it stays this way. I plan to sell him when the time comes so someone else can enjoy putting him through training!

Low-mileage 4-y-o TORITO will likely have pattern races on his agenda again before long but might be able to plunder this valuable handicap first The big-field 1m handicap at the Craven meeting looks a key piece of form here, with Dutch Decoy, Theoryofeverything, Bopedro and Majestic four from that race who could have a big say in this.

THE WILLIAM HILL PALACE HOUSE STAKES

First staged in 1961, the William Hill Palace House Stakes is run in recognition of one of the town of Newmarket’s most historic landmarks.

Built on the site of a palace of King Charles II, Palace House Stables reputedly incorporated a passageway under Palace Street to the home of His Majesty’s mistress Nell Gwynn. Dating back to Stuart times, it was at Palace House Stables that Charles II most likely stabled his hacks and coach horses

From the late 1800s into the 20th century, Palace House Stables was the property of the Rothschild Family and was frequently visited by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII.

Classic winners trained at Palace House Stables during this period include Hannah, winner of the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger (the fillies’ Triple Crown) in 1871 and 1871 Derby victor Favonius.

After falling into disrepair during the latter part of the 20th century, Palace House Stables has been restored and now forms part of the National Horseracing Museum.

As a race, the Palace House Stakes takes place over five furlongs and carries Group Three status. It is open to three-year-olds and upwards.

Sole Power (2013, 2014) and Mabs Cross (2018, 2019) are the most successful horses in the contest’s history with two wins each.

THE WILLIAM HILL PALACE HOUSE STAKES

RACE DESCRIPTION: This five furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest –a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

THE ROAD TO THE QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS

BUCANERO FUERTE

The Keeneland Phoenix Stakes Curragh

Saturday 12th August

Bucanero Fuerte produced a mightily impressive performance in August, winning the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh by an emphatic four lengths. The Adrian Murray-trained colt went clear inside the final furlong and was never in any danger of relinquishing his lead to Porta Fortuna in second.

CITY OF TROY

The Darley Dewhurst Stakes Newmarket

Saturday 14th October

City Of Troy made it five wins since 2015 in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes for trainer Aidan O’Brien with a comfortable three-anda-half length success. The son of Justify made all and went clear inside the final furlong in what was a very impressive performance.

HAATEM

The bet365 Craven Stakes Newmarket

Thursday 18th April

Haatem left his mark on the Craven Stakes here last month, winning by thee-and-a-half lengths. The Richard Hannon-trained colt pulled clear inside the final furlong having been pressed by Eben Shaddad. Sean Levey was on board the son of Phoenix Of Spain in what was a fine start to the season.

ANCIENT WISDOM

The Futurity Trophy Stakes Doncaster

Saturday 28th October

The Charlie Appleby-trained Ancient Wisdom justified the market support to secure a length-and-three-quarters success in the Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster in October. That victory made it four wins from five starts.

THE QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS - FACTS AND FIGURES

BACKGROUND

The QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll of honour, celebrates its 216th running in 2024 It is the first race in the 2024 QIPCO British Champions Series and has a total prize fund of £500,000.

Along with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, also over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five English Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds - the others being the Betfred Derby and Betfred Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, and the extended 14-furlong Betfred St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.

Sir Charles Bunbury, who played an important role in the development of British racing, including overseeing the extension of The Jockey Club’s authority, was inspired to introduce the two youngest Classics - the 2000 Guineas for colts and fillies and the 1000 Guineas for fillies only The name derived quite literally from the initial prize fund for the race – 2,000 Guineas was in effect a guaranteed sweepstake, irrespective of the number of subscribers

The inaugural running was won by Wizard, who gained £1,522 for his connections, in the silks of Yorkshire sportsman Christopher Wilson. Bill Clift steered Wizard to that success and, five years later, completed a famous double for the same owner when partnering Charlotte to take the first running of the 1000 Guineas Both were trained by Tom Perren

FIELD SIZE

The largest field was in 1930 when there were 28 runners in the race won by Diolite, while 27 ran in 2000, 1964, 1951 and 1933 In both 1829 and 1830 there were just two competitors, with both winners - Patron and Augustus - owned by Lord Exeter and trained by Charles Marson The maximum field allowed for safety reasons is currently 25

WINNING DISTANCE

Since 1900, the biggest winning distance was recorded in 1947 by Tudor Minstrel, who scored by eight lengths In the current century, Frankel has been the easiest winner when scoring by six lengths in 2011

During the same period, the Classic has been won by a short-head 13 times - Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914), Adam’s Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943), Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966), Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) Mark Of Esteem (1996) and Poetic Flare (2021)

Henrythenavigator in 2008 was the first British Classic winner to score by a nose – the new minimum winning distance introduced by the BHA less than three months earlier.

BETTING

The longest-priced winner was 1961 hero Rockavon, who was returned at 66-1. Not nearly so generous were the odds of 12-100 laid on St Frusquin in 1896 - the shortest-priced winner in the race’s history.

In the 215 runnings to date, a total of 84 favourites or joint-favourites have obliged in the 2000 Guineas – meaning 39% of winners have headed the betting market

Frankel is the shortest priced winner since World War II, having been returned the 1-2 Favourite in 2011.

ROYAL WINNERS

The late Queen Elizabeth II owned the 1958 winner of the 2000 Guineas, Pall Mall, while her great-grandfather, King Edward VII, owned both the 1900 victor Diamond Jubilee (when he was the Prince of Wales) and Minoru, successful in 1909.

FILLIES

Few fillies, who carry 3lbs less than colts, run in the 2000 Guineas in the modern era. Seven fillies have been successful - Pastille (1822), Crucifix (1840), Formosa (dead-heat with the colt Moslem in 1868), Pilgrimage (1878), Shotover (1882), Sceptre (1902) and Garden Path (1944)

THE QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS

RACE DESCRIPTION: The first of the Classic races that highlight the season, this one mile race for three-year-olds is also a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland, occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the prestige of these historic contests. Victory in a Classic race is the ultimate pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud.

Andrew Balding secured his second win in four years with Chaldean producing a strong performance under Frankie Dettori. Auguste Rodin was popular in the market but was unable to justify that support.

Aidan O’Brien has made little secret of the fact that he regards CITY OF TROY as the best 2-y-o he’s trained and this clear Timeform top rated can provide the master of Ballydoyle with a record-extending 11th win in the first Classic ofthe season. Rosallion was also highly promising at 2 and can give the selection most to do ahead of Godolphin’s Notable Speech, who didn’t make his debut until January but has quickly established himself as a top prospect with 3 AW wins at Kempton.

PLAY SMARTER

Unsurprisingly plenty arrive with claims and with that in mind INDIVAR could well represent a spot of value.Acomfortable winneron his final start at Redcarin the autumn, he returned with an encouraging third in a C&D handicap at the Craven Meeting last month and this well-bred sort is just the type to build on that for his good yard Pedro Valentino is another expected to come on for his return and is respected along with Purefoy Pressure’s On and Christian David complete the shortlist.

ROWAYEH beat a subsequent Listed winner at Sandown last season and starts her 4yo season on a mark which still appeals as workable, so gets the verdict over Crack Shot, who rates as one who should have more to offer in this kind of environment despite a slightly underwhelming show in the Cambridgeshire when last seen. Bodorgan ran well here at the Craven Meeting so gets the nod for third over the still-unexposed Bystander

Looking ahead to the QIPCO 1000 Guineas tomorrow Ramatuelle

Trainer Christopher Head has revealed that French sporting superstars Thierry Henry and Tony Parker will be cheering his QIPCO 1000 Guineas contender Ramatuelle on The Rowley Mile tomorrow. Head hopes to become the third generation of his family to train a winner of the fillies’ Classic after his grandfather Alec, who died in 2022 aged 97, landed the 1957 renewal with Rose Royale while his aunt Criquette saddled four winners in Ma Biche (1983), Ravinella (1988), Hatoof (1992) and Special Duty (2010). Ma Biche was partnered to victory by Head’s father Freddy, who also enjoyed success in the Classic aboard the great Miesque (1987).

Head will be represented in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas by Ramatuelle who, like red-hot QIPCO 2000 Guineas favourite City Of Troy, is out of 2018 US Triple Crown winner Justify. Having won three of her five starts in 2023, headed by success in the Group Two Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly, she also went down narrowly in Group One company, when the short-neck runner-up to the colt Vandeek in the Prix Morny at Deauville. This season, she made her comeback in the Group Three Prix Imprudence at Deauville last month, when she was the half-length runner-up to Romantic Style.

Speaking from his base in Chantilly on a call hosted by QIPCO British Champions Series and The Jockey Club, Head said today: “We are preparing Ramatuelle 100 per cent for the Guineas. She is very well and came out of her first run of the season in good form.

“As we discussed plans last year, we thought she had the profile for the Guineas and it would be best to wait until next season with her.

“She is a filly with a lot of energy, so it was good to give her a prep run. We are really happy with her right now.

“She has a strong heart. On her comeback at Deauville, it was very heavy ground and she still stayed on well and finished her race, which was a good Guineas trial.

“She is also strong mentally and easy to deal with, so travelling is not a problem.

When we come to England or Ireland, we come with a sense of humility as we are up against the best horses and trainers in Europe on different racetracks.

“We think there is something special about this filly and that Newmarket will suit her, although we can’t be 100 per cent sure. Of course, this is my first Guineas, but from what I see in the morning and her profile, I have the feeling Newmarket should suit her. The start of the race is important and I think she will be up there in the early stages. Her jockey Aurelien Lemaitre has ridden there before and knows the filly well, which is a great advantage.

“She was really precocious from the start and Justify is clearly a tremendous stallion in the making and showing a lot of quality – I am lucky to be training some of his progeny. He made a great start and it is great to see his progeny progressing at two and three. I hope we can show it is possible to be as precocious as she was last year and go on to be a three-year-old. She travels over on Saturday and will stay overnight in Newmarket.”

One of Ramatuelle’s owners is NBA legend Tony Parker, who will be visiting Newmarket tomorrow with another sporting legend in Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal forward who was part of the French national team’s 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship winning sides.

Head went on: “Having Tony Parker as part of the circle is something special. The eye that he has from his career and his winning attitude all helps us and it is a pleasure to have him around. I have not had the luck of talking to Thierry Henry yet and will meet him for the first time tomorrow. I can’t wait, it’s really going to be something.

“What I love about being a trainer is that you have access to people who have had a lot of success in life and Tony knows all about being part of a team and how to get the best from people. He is an athlete and I’m training athletes – he has always been a very good adviser.”

On coming from such a famous racing family, the trainer added: “I have big shoes to fill but it comes with a lot of advantages.

“It’s important to have your own personality – I am not training like my grandfather, my father or my aunt. There is heritage there and I hope I am not going to make a black mark on my family!

“We have been trying to hit expectations with the stable and make it work, with the horses giving 100 per cent. I am a Head but still want to be myself. Every trainer is different – my aunt and father have both been great mentors and still help me when I have to make decisions although they do not interfere.”

Head clearly holds British racing in the highest esteem and admits Classic success tomorrow would be something very special.

He concluded: “It would be really something to win the Guineas. Winning in the UK is an objective for any French trainer as it is where horseracing is most important. The atmosphere at your racetracks is just tremendous. I never felt anything like when we won with Big Rock last year in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot - it was something special and I will come to the UK every year when I have the right horses.”

The QIPCO 1000 Guineas is the second race in the QIPCO British Champions Series.

THE QIPCO 1000 GUINEAS - FACTS AND FIGURES

BACKGROUND

The QIPCO 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, both of which are run over the historic Rowley Mile at Newmarket As with the 2000 Guineas, the Classic is so named because the original prize fund was 1,000 Guineas

The youngest of the British Classics, the 1000 Guineas was first staged in 1814 and won by Charlotte, ridden by Bill Clift and owned by Christopher Wilson, the same combination responsible for Wizard, the initial victor of the 2000 Guineas

Like the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the QIPCO 1000 Guineas is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and has a total prize fund of £500,000 in 2024

1000 GUINEAS-2000 GUINEAS DOUBLE

Four fillies have completed the 1000 Guineas-2000 Guineas double. The last was Sceptre in 1902, who was also successful in the Oaks and St Leger. The other fillies to win both Newmarket Classics are Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868) and Pilgrimage (1878).

FIELD SIZE

In 1825, the Duke of Grafton’s Tontine was the sole participant in the 1000 Guineas. At the other end of the spectrum, the largest field was 29 in 1926, when Pillion was successful at 25-1. The maximum field size allowed now is 25.

WINNING DISTANCE

Homecoming Queen recorded the greatest winning margin since 1900 when scoring by nine lengths in 2012 under Ryan Moore. During the same period, six winners have scraped home by a short-head, namely Atmah (1911), Fair Isle (1930), Highclere (1974), Nocturnal Spree (1975), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Las Meninas (1994). Jacqueline Quest was a nose in front of Special Duty in the 2010 renewal only for the places to be reversed in the stewards’ room.

BETTING

The longest-priced 1000 Guineas winner is Billesdon Brook, returned at 66-1 in 2018. The shortest-priced was Crucifix, whose odds were 1-10 when taking the 1840 renewal.

A total of 81 of the 210 runnings have been won by either the favourite or a joint-favourite – a strike rate of 38.5 per cent Sent off at 11-10, Minding in 2016 was the most recent winning favourite

1000 GUINEAS-OAKS DOUBLE AND THE FILLIES’ TRIPLE CROWN

A total of 49 fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks at Epsom Downs. Neva was the first in 1817 and Love the latest in 2020.

One of the true heroines of the 1000 Guineas was Tagalie, successful in 1912 and the only winner to go on and land the Derby.

Sceptre, successful in the 1902 1000 Guineas, remains the only winner of four British Classics outright, having also succeeded in the 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger She also finished fourth in the only other British Classic, the Derby.

Hannah captured the 1000 Guineas in 1871 and was one of the most outstanding fillies of her era. She progressed to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown - the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and St Leger.

Another six fillies have also managed this feat –Apology (1874), La Fleche (1892), Pretty Polly (1904), Sun Chariot (1942), Meld (1985) and Oh So Sharp (1985)

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
