Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the highlight of our racing calendar, The Northumberland Plate Day, a superb finale to the 2025 Northumberland Plate Festival.

My thanks go to JenningsBet for their generous sponsorship of today’s card and the prestigious three-day festival I would also like to extend my thanks to Pertemps for their sponsorship on today’s card.

Today we shall witness the greatest flat race staged annually at Newcastle Racecourse, the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate and we are absolutely delighted to welcoming so many racegoers to the racecourse

A full field of 20 will go to post on Saturday for the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate, run over 2m½f and worth £150,000, including Andrew Balding’s Who’s Glen and the Willie Mullins-trained Pappano We are delighted to see another full field of twenty horses for the race which has been the case since we became an all-weather track The Jenningsbet Northumberland Vase is equally well supported, and great to see Jim Goldie with three declarations.

Join us on the Grandstand Lawns after today’s racing for an electrifying performance by ABBA Revival, bringing all the glamour and timeless hits of ABBA to life from ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ to ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Take a Chance on Me.’The show will begin approximately 30 minutes after the final race don’t miss this night of unforgettable music and dancing!

Our next raceday is the North East’s social highlight of the year, the Beeswing Ladies Day on Saturday 26 July, featuring Bongo’s Bingo Party Live after Racing Expect a fast-paced dose of Bongo’s with all the fun, dancing, and iconic prizes but with a twist...it’s Bongo’s without the Bingo! Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT NEWCASTLE

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today.
