Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the social highlight of the year, the Beeswing Ladies Day. Demand for this year has been phenomenal and it’s great to see so many racegoers here today. . I would like to extend my thanks to Seat Unique, Probio Energy, Ad Gefrin, Rios, Houghton Groundworks, Select Lofts and Builders and the European Breeders’ Fund for sponsoring on today’s card.

We have a wonderful day of racing ahead, with the feature race being the historic Beeswing Handicap Stakes, named after one of the greatest female racehorses of all time, and a regular victor of the greatest races at Newcastle Racecourse in the 1800s.

Good luck to all the contestants competing for the winning title of the Style Awards, we look forward to the finalists judging ahead of the third race in the Winners Enclosure.

We hope you also enjoy the Bongo’s Bingo DJ after racing, commencing at approximately 6.30pm.

A strict traffic management system is in place today, please follow directional signage and steward instructions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this evening.

The free shuttle bus service will be running after racing until 9pm, with the majority of buses going direct to the Official After Party at Jalou located next to Central Station. We will also have buses running on a loop to Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro Stations

From the team and I here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HOSANNA POWER has hit the frame on both starts at this course to date, the latest in a much better race than he contests here. He’s preferred to Callianassa who travelled well when successful over C&D last time and should hold her own up in grade, while Rogue Encore won back-to-back races here last season and arrives following his best run of this campaign. Sheriff’s Court is going the right way and deserves an honourable mention for the in-form Sir Mark Prescott team.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT NEWCASTLE

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today.
