RACEDAY PROGRAMME SEASON 12, 2025

FRIDAY 18 APRIL
RACEDAY PROGRAMME SEASON 12, 2025
Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse and All-Weather Championships Finals Day. We are thrilled that you could join us here to celebrate the end of Season XII, which has proven to be another fantastic competition over the winter
We have over £1m in prize money on offer, making this the richest all-weather meeting in Europe. In addition, the All-Weather Vase fixture worth £395,000 takes place at our sister racecourse Lingfield Park, while Chelmsford City also stages a valuable all-weather card. Good Friday continues to grow as a marquee day for British racing, with bumper fields including contenders from France and Ireland.
The thanks of everyone involved in the All-Weather Championships must go to all of the owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff who have taken part this season, as well as those supporting today’s fixtures.
Equally, we must thank our sponsors BetUK and BetMGM, who have been excellent supporters of the All-Weather Championships throughout the season.
We look forward to crowning this season’s champions this afternoon. Tony Carroll takes the All-Weather Champion Trainer title for the first time after a stellar campaign that has seen him send out more than 50 winners.
Godolphin’s stranglehold on the AllWeather Champion Owner award is under threat, with Rabbah Racing only two wins behind. Rabbah Racing has three runners on Good Friday, including BetUK Easter Classic contender Charlotte’s Web, while Godolphin has no representation.
Billy Loughnane leads Hector Crouch by two in the All-Weather Champion Jockey standings, with Loughnane in action at Lingfield Park and Crouch here at Newcastle. Jack Doughty meanwhile has the All-Weather Champion Apprentice prize sewn up and will be riding at Lingfield Park.
Now in its third year, the ARC £1m All-Weather Bonus Scheme produced another thrilling competition. Tasever clinched the overall £100,000 Horse of The Year prize by one point, with Patrick Morris’ runner recording four wins and eight placed efforts during the season.
We would like to wish you all the best of luck this afternoon and hope you have a fantastic day’s racing here at Gosforth Park.

All-Weather (AWT)
An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn” Stalls are used for Flat racing only
Filly Female horse four years old or younger
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the toprated jumper in the 180s.
Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs
Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue-tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tonguetie in a race for the first time)
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time)
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight.
When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Tasever, a five-year-old who started the All-Weather Championships with a lowly rating of 50, will be crowned Horse of the Year at Newcastle on Friday. Co-owned by his trainer Patrick Morris and the Clear Cut Racing Club, Tasever claims the £100,000 first prize by a single point from Paradoxical, Urban Road and Come On John following a thrilling battle during the season. Tasever secured four wins and eight placings during his 15 appearances since mid-October, with all four of his successes coming at Newcastle.
Horses accrued points for the Horse of the Year competition on a maximum of fifteen runs across the season, with points allocated to the first three runs in any given monthly period (October & November, December, January, February, March/April) at ARC’s four all-weather racecourses. The horse with the most points overall wins a bonus of £100,000, with further prizes down to 20th overall place. The bonus will be allocated 87.5% to the owner of the horse, and 12.5% to the trainer.

Cloud Cover bids to become the first two-time winner of the race. The £15,000 bonus chaser is 14lb higher in the ratings this year, following a Listed success at Deauville and an easy AWC Finals Day success at Newcastle
Quandary also has a £15,000 bonus opportunity thanks to her AWC Trials Day win at Lingfield Park, in which she had Callianassa, Aramis Grey and Viennoise in behind.
Powdering defeated Quandary at Southwell in February and has since scored again at the Nottinghamshire track, while Gaiety Musical is seeking her fifth win of 2025.
Shallow tackles seven furlongs for the first time after winning two of her last three starts in six-furlong handicaps at Kempton Park.

The All-Weather Champion Jockey title goes down to the wire, with Billy Loughnane and Hector Crouch both strong contenders heading into the final day
Loughnane topped the table in the early part of the season before taking a working holiday in Australia, during which time Crouch hit a rich vein of form and established a clear lead.
Loughnane has steadily reduced the deficit since returning in mid-January and the pendulum has swung back and forth in recent weeks. Both riders are in action on Good Friday, with Loughnane riding at Lingfield Park and Crouch heading to Newcastle.

In-form duo Destructive and Storm Star both have £15,000 bonus opportunities following their respective AWC Trials Day wins at Lingfield Park and Newcastle.
Roi De France and Popmaster filled the places behind Poker Face in a Kempton Park Listed race before Christmas, while G2-winning sprinter Valiant Force is an unknown quantity over this trip
Clive Cox is double-handed with last year’s second Kingdom Come and recent Southwell scorer Cracking Gold, who chased home Lincoln Trial victor Symbol Of Light at the same track in December.
A stacked lineup also features Fantastic Fox, who was third last year off a 2lb higher mark, and Apiarist, who has won nice prizes at Chelmsford and Southwell this season. START

Godolphin NUMBER OF WINS: 15
Rabbah Racing NUMBER OF WINS: 13
Godolphin looks set to maintain its stranglehold on the All-Weather Champion Owner title, although Rabbah Racing could yet mount a late challenge.
Both operations are based in Dubai, with Godolphin having taken the prize for the past 10 seasons. Notable winners in the royal blue silks include Classic hopeful Opera Ballo, who made it two from two with an emphatic display in a conditions race at Kempton Park.
Rabbah Racing has also enjoyed a productive winter, headed by BetMGM Winter Oaks scorer and BetUK Easter Classic contender Charlotte’s Web.
Marshman started his season with AWC Trials Day win at Newcastle, setting himself up for a £15,000 bonus, and followed up in the Listed BetUK Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park.
Last year’s victor Fivethousandtoone is one of two former winners in the lineup alongside Diligent Harry, who landed the spoils in 2023 when it was a conditions race.
Heathcliff and Listed scorer Willem Twee give James Fanshawe a strong hand, while We Never Stop gained a deserved success at Southwell last time out
The Irish challenge includes Daamberdiplomat, who caught the eye at Dundalk on his comeback last month, while Run Boy Run meets Marshman on 6lb better terms from their Newcastle meeting.

Lightly raced six-year-old Glen Buck goes for a fifth win from six career starts, although he has to prove himself as effective over a mile and a quarter.
Old Harrovian went down narrowly to Glen Buck at Southwell in early January and underlined the form with an easy win at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day to set up a £15,000 bonus bid.
The form of last year’s race is represented by runner-up Penzance and third Hooking, while BetMGM Winter Oaks heroine Charlotte’s Web is one of two quality fillies in the lineup alongside Power Of Destiny
Smart Hero is unexposed over middle distances after winning his last two races at Wolverhampton. Paradias and Salamanca both shaped well on their prep runs.

Roaring Legend has a shot at a £35,000 bonus thanks to his AWC Trials Day victories at Newcastle and Lingfield Park, the latter coming by five lengths.
Wonder Legend is unexposed over staying trips after winning two of his last three starts, including comfortably accounting for Plage De Havre at Wolverhampton last time out.
Last year’s runner-up Duke Of Oxford has improved again this season, most recently winning the London Stayers Series Final at Kempton Park for a second time.
Heathen and Midnight Lion both line up on the back of victories, while Tritonic represents Northumberland Plate-winning trainer Alan King.
