RACE STATS RACE SUMMARY
ONESOC put in a good round of jumping when gaining his first success over fences at Southwell 12 days ago and, with the prospect of better to come from him now moving back up in trip, he is taken to strike again. Fakir and the 2021 winner of this, RoadWarrior, have both slipped to dangerous marks but if, as expected, Gold Emery steps up on his chase debut at Uttoxeter he could provide the main threat.

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.
Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse.
To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk

THE GUINNESS SURGE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5)
Total prize fund £8600 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £3474, 2nd £1736, 3rd £869, 4th £434, 5th £217. (Penalty Value £4541.66) Weights raised 4lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.
RACE STATS
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): M Hammond (15 wins from 128 runners, 12%) runs LE GRAND VERT
TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Hammond (2 wins from 16 runners, 12%) runs LE GRAND VERT LONGEST TRAVELLER: CATLIN trained by N Kent, Brigg, 148 miles.
This appears to be a good opportunity for MAID OF HOUXTY to get off the mark, with a mere reproduction of her latest third at Ayr likely to prove good enough in this company. Catlin has to be feared given that she’s unbeaten in 3 starts here and Nick Kent’s charge is clear second choice ahead of To The Limit

BURROWS HALL made a promising start in handicaps when third at Wetherby 12 days ago and this longer trip should bring on improvement, so he gets the nod Gavroche d’Allier should benefit from the refitting of cheekpieces, so he’s regarded as the main threat, with Eloi du Puy also worthy of interest.
