Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): K Dalgleish (40 wins from 351 runners, 11%) runs BREGUET BOY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Carroll (6 wins from 54 runners, 11%) runs CAPTAIN PUGWASH LONGEST TRAVELLER: TRUE COMPANION trained by J Cullen, Ireland.
RACE SUMMARY
A shade unlucky not to make a winning debut for this yard in a C&D handicap last week, BREGUET BOY looks the way to go Though he meets a handful of these on less favourable terms than he would if this were a handicap, it’s worth remembering that his BHA mark was some 15lb higher this time last year. Coligone Kate wasn’t beaten far in a similar event at Southwell last time and she is next on the list ahead of Visitant.

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.
Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken.
Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery
If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse
To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk

ELIM is up against some promising rivals from more fashionable yards but she shaped like a ready-madefuturewinnerwhenjustedgedoutbyapromisingRogerVarian-trainedfillyondebutover7fhereintheautumn.Shelooks sure to improve now upped in trip and is taken to get the better of another representative of theVarian yard, Kodiman, who also found just one too good on his introduction. Postman’s Park is third choice, while Afterwards and newcomer Bleak are others to consider

FINAL ACCOUNT’s strike rate is hardly the most compelling but he put in a good shift when runner-up off this mark last week and a reproduction of that would give him every chance, back at the scene of last month’s breakthrough success. RACE SUMMARY
WESTMORIAN was bitterly disappointing when bidding for the hat-trick at Southwell in January but he clearly wasn’t firing on all cylinders that day. Grant Tuer’s charge had looked progressive prior to that, winning a 5f maiden at the aforementioned course and a C&D handicap, and he is taken to get back on track. The Green Man is an obvious threat with no penalty to carry for last week’s Kempton success and Another Investment, who went close on his AW debut here last time, also merits respect.

TIMEFORMVIEWC&D winner Didn’t need to improve to win 11-runner handicap at Southwell (6.1f, 5/1) 19 days ago, slowly away Shade more will be needed here but he’s only gone up 2lb and can’t be faulted in terms of consistency.
