KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

WHERE TO BET

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; Britbet has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Britbet signs.

The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Minimum Stakes

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

Simon’s Fifty Horses

At work Simon was a valued and knowledgeable member of the Workforce. His Talent being, not as a Chief Cashier but in the foreign department where he’d get payments Authorised, usually for Big Buck’s and generally dealing with customers with his Supreme Charm.

During and after his banking career the lads would get together fairly regularly and usually for major horseracing meetings, never Ad Hoc, these were Master Minded by Simon. He was our Commander In Chief, our Reference Point, he was Simply Gifted at it and they had a certain Infamy. And they could get Oh So Risky especially when the Vodkatini’s began to flow or in my case simply a Red Rum. He could be very Persuasive.

His dancing skills were a thing of Legend, twist and shout springs to mind, never a Suave Dancer and never Synchronised, when he was In The Groove it would usually turn into a Rough’n Tumble and end up with someone in a headlock and if that happened to be you then you treated it as a Mark of Esteem.

In his day he was Fighting Fit. He would use his lunch hour to go for a Long Run, never down the gym as he liked to Run For Free and never before work, you’d never see Simon on a Dawn Run!

He had a great Talent for football, a Mastery of the game. As a Midfielder he was Formidable, especially in a War of Attrition, well it was a Bravemansgame and he’d Refuse To Lose with his Never Say Die attitude.

Out and about he was quite a calm person. Never really saw him Go Ballistic about Thisthatandtother. Overall he was Pleasant Company , didn’t bang on about Party Politics and how he’d Rule the World. He preferred talking about sport or comedy. He’d often quote a Classic Cliche from The Office or Fawlty Towers often without Warning and usually with no Rhyme ‘n’ Reason and the conversation would degenerate into farce, Berude Not To really!

Simon was just One Man among our group of friends but he was a One in a Million, Decent Fellow. The Fellow who would Forgive ‘n Forget, and that was Simon, Different Class, a Generous, Best Mate!
