WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
INFORMATION Welcome to Lingfield Park, where today we are proud to host the inaugural All-Weather Championships Vase Day on this Good Friday. With the six category Finals being run for the first time on the tapeta at our sister Newcastle Racecourse, Lingfield Park remains integral to the Championships and showcasing those stars of the track who have remained on home soil over the winter months. One of the original aspirations of the All-Weather Championships series was to raise the profile of flat racing in Britain as well as offering a fitting end of season target for horses and connections, on Finals Day. As the event has grown, and the average ratings of horses running on Good Friday (and throughout the season) has increased, it is hoped that today’s new fixture at Lingfield Park, offering over £390,000 in prize money, has offered a similar target to those horses which might otherwise have not enjoyed an opportunity to run today. The programme of the All-Weather Vase meeting will closely mirror that of Finals Day, with six handicap races at either Class 3 or 4 joining the popular race over a mile-and-a-half for apprentice jockeys, which has been a feature of the Good Friday card for a number of years. All of the equine stars you will see here today have had to qualify by running three times on an allweather surface in Great Britain, Ireland or France and once in Dubai, or for the first time in Season 9, in Saudi Arabia. We are particularly delighted to see some of our old favourites back today – both on and off the track. Many of you have supported this Championship series from day one – and for that we extend our grateful thanks. Thanks must also go to the BHA for its continued support of both the Championship – and racing on Good Friday, as well as our sponsors, Coral and Betway as our official partners. As well as the Thoroughbred action on the track, we give a warm welcome to the inaugural AWC Pony Racing Series Final, kindly sponsored by Arena Racing Company (ARC). This new winter series was set up with the Pony Racing Authority and ARC, which allows young teenagers to compete on the centre stage - giving you a glimpse of the future stars! The series final will take place at 12:15 over a distance of 1 mile – make sure you are by the Paddock to welcome the runners and riders. While the action on the track may be your main focus today, there is plenty going on around the course to keep you entertained both before, and in between the racing. We are delighted to welcome back our 200-strong ChoirandKo, who we are thrilled to have perform again at Lingfield. All of these dedicated singers have one thing in common – their love of music and I’m sure you will agree, their singing is enough to raise anyone’s spirits. For our younger fans, there is plenty to keep you occupied from free pony rides, facepainting, funfair rides and sidestall, to lots of chocolate giveaways and an Easter Egg hunt. Thank you once again for joining us and I wish you all a ‘Great Friday’. We look forward to welcoming you back to Europe’s busiest racecourse, whether at our Derby Trial in May, Ladies’ Day or one of our popular Music Live events this summer. Russell Bowes General Manager

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? RATINGS EXPLAINED Selected to win the race Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims Unlikely to win but not totally without hope Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse – easily identified by the Tote Betting or Totepool signs.
The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. MINIMUM STAKES The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

awchampionships.co.uk
RACING KNOWLEDGE All-Weather (AWT) An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year. There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta. Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season. Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater. Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse. Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate. Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing. Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface. Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys. The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards. Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level. Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only. Filly Female horse four years old or younger. Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post. Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat. Mare Female horse aged five years old or above. Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
awchampionships.co.uk
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme. Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s. Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs. Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tonguetie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue-tie in a race for the first time). Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time). Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

OBSIDIAN KNIGHT found himself poorly positioned in a muddling race on his C&D handicap debut last month and this lightly-raced 4-y-o is well worth another chance to show that an opening mark of 77 is workable. Red Flyer won the race the selection contested last time and may pose the biggest threat if a wide stall isn’t too troublesome. Pallas Dancer and Napper Tandy also make the shortlist in a very competitive opener.

TIPS TO PICKING A WINNER
1
Pick up a racecard and study the form.
3
Scan the horse’s course and distance record.
2
Look at the jockeys and owners details and racing colours.
4
Check the jockey’s and trainer’s track record.
A TRIP TO THE PARADE RING BEHAVIOUR
Behaviour in the paddock is a good guide to how the horse is feeling before the race. Good signs are pricked ears, alert eyes, but also a calm and relaxed walk. 1
1. QUARTERS
3 2
A defined line of muscle running down the buttock indicates the horse is fit and well. A lack of muscle definition may indicate that the horse is not yet at its peak.
2. RIB CAGE
A defined line of muscle behind the rib cage indicates that the horse is fit and well. If the horse is too fat this may indicate the horse may need a run before it reaches its optimum level.
3. COAT
The horse should have a shiny coat, mane and tail. A coat that is not shiny may show that the horse is not yet at its best.
EASY BETTING STEPS
1
Go to the bookmaker kiosk and review the odds
2 1
2
State the race number, the number of your chosen horse, the bet type, the amount you want to bet and hand over the cash remembering to only bet what you can afford. 3
4
3 4
You will then be given a ticket with details of your bet which you will need to present when collecting any winnings from any bookmaker. Get a good vantage point to watch the action and cheer your horse home!
BET TYPES
The easiest bet types are “To win” which is betting on your chosen horse to win or “Each way” which is betting on your chosen horse to come first, second or third. Good luck!

IMPERIAL FIGHTER ran well in good company as a juvenile and is the one to beat on form. Dark Moon Rising was impressive switched to AW on his reappearance and looks the obvious threat to Andrew Balding’s charge. Checkandchallenge did well to win on debut considering he was green and could have enough improvement in him to also make his presence felt.

PROTECTED GUEST has his well documented quirks but it’s hard to knock what he’s done this winter and it’s possible this step up in trip could suit him. French raiders are no stranger to success here on Good Friday and Honor And Pleasure arrives on a roll after winning 3 of his last 4 so he’s feared most. Brian Ellison’s Fair Star ran well behind the selection last time and is another who should play a part.

CRIMSON SAND ran creditably without everything going his way here last time and could still have a bigger performance in him, so he’s an appealing candidate. Stall 12 is far from ideal for Tommy de Vito but his current mark doesn’t look beyond him, while others to consider are Asadjumeirah and Shallow Hal. 1-2-3: 1.CRIMSON SAND (IRE) 2.TOMMY DE VITO 3.ASADJUMEIRAH KEY colours

EJTILAAB took his form up a notch when scoring at Kempton and this C&D winner looks the one to beat on that form. Judicial showed the benefit of a wind op when a good recent second over C&D and rates a big threat along with Irish challenger Harry’s Bar who comes here on the back of a cosy Dundalk success.

ZAMEKA didn’t have to be at his best when comfortably landing the odds at Wolverhampton and his opening mark may underestimate him given the strength of his debut form. Leap Abroad is clearly still on a workable mark judged on his good second at Southwell in January and the return to 6f should be in his favour, while Vespasian and Aasser are both progressive.

SLEEPING LION has a terrific record on the AW and holds leading claims on form here too so gets the nod in a competitive event. Earlofthecotswolds is still quite low mileage on the level and rates the chief threat in his hat-trick bid with recent Wolverhampton scorer Halimi and Irish challenger Grandmaster Flash looking the duo best equipped to fight it out for minor honours.

Trickly to rule out any in a very well-contested finale. The Johnston stable is in better form now than when ENFRANCHISE was third at Kempton last time so she’s selected to step up again and make it 4 wins in her last 5 starts. Baldomero and Fountain Cross are others with sold claims.
