WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse for our

Countryside Raceday! Today we welcome our sponsors Planet Sport Bet and Charlie Goodman & family.

There is plenty to enjoy with us today, in addition to our seven jump races A timetable of events can be found on page 7 of your racecard. We welcome back Meirion Owen and his famous ‘Quack Pack’ dog and duck herding demonstration, as well as a parade of the Ross Harriers, all on the Rusty Bridge lawn in front of the grandstand. Then head up to the main entrance for the perfect photo opportunity (for young and old) with the Vintage Vehicle display courtesy of Leominster Vintage Club. We also have free face painting and bouncy castles for children on the lawns.

With us also today is the We Are Farming Minds Charity and you can visit their stand on the Rusty Bridge lawn. They are one of the charities that the Richard Layton Charity Raceday on Wednesday 27th November will support, with the opportunity for sponsorship and hospitality on this day, as well as proceeds to the Midlands Air Ambulance and the Injured Jockeys Fund For more information please email the organisers at info@charityraceday.com.

There will be a bucket collection on exits today for St Michael’s Hospice so please give what you can to support. We next race at Hereford on the evening of Tuesday 7th May, where we hope you can join us for our first evening fixture in over 12 years!

Best wishes,

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Impossible to rule out any of these but preference is for POLITACUS, who produced a performance more in keeping with her fairly useful bumper form when getting off the mark at Huntingdon last month and a 7lb rise may not be enough to stop her from following up (runner-up that day a wide-margin winner since). A good opportunity for MONTECAM to get off the mark for Nicky Henderson. He’s made a good start over hurdles in 2 races at Doncaster and this looks easier returning from a break. HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site.

To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk.
