Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before

ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit

RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse

FIVE FURLONGS (5f abt 7yds) (1000m)
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This is a one mile half a furlong handicap race for three-yearolds which have been rated from 53 to 72. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
Leading course trainer (20-25): R Fahey (31 wins from 173 runners, 18%) runs SPRINGBOK

FRIDAY 18 JULY 2025
This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

about SIX FURLONGS (6f abt 6yds) (1200m) 3.30p.m.
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 59 to 78. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 53 to 72.
Leading course trainer (20-25): K R Burke (20 wins from 116 runners, 17%) runs GENTLE WARRIOR
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Balding (13 wins from 62 runners, 21%) runs HI YA MAL
