07 MAY Official Raceday Programme & Form Guide | £3
AFTERNOON JUMP RACING TUE

WELCOME

Good afternoon and welcome to another great days racing at Ffos Las Racecourse

Firstly the team at Ffos Las wanted to say how proud we are of Sean Bowens magnificent performance of finishing runner up in the 2023 /24 Jump Jockeys championship, riding an amazing 157 winners despite being off with injury for over seven weeks early in the new year

Sean leads the way backed up by some brilliant performances from other Welsh Jockeys this season , with Ben Jones (55 winners) James Bowen (52 Winners) , Jack Tudor (47 winners) Connor Brace (29 winners) ,Lorcan Williams (28 winners) and Richard Patrick (26 winners) and all gaining notable victories, it’s a fact that the future really does look bright for Welsh horse racing.

But it’s now onwards and upwards, with the start of the new jumps season last weekend it was business as usual for Sean, riding a winner for Olly Murphy at Uttoxeter. It was a fourth victory for Resplendent Grey, a consistent sort who has only been out of the first four once in ten starts All of his wins were with Bowen in the plate He didn’t run last summer, so this might be his final outing for a while unless soft going continues to prevail

As of Sunday evening that success made him joint leader in the 2024/25 jump jockeys’ championship with 21 others, which puts them all one ahead of Harry Cobden Today Sean had a full book of rides to look forward to here at Ffos Las, plus several Welsh jockeys and trainers are also in action with competitive fields in what will be

Looking forward, Ffos Las has another two jumps meetings left first on Wednesday 15th May and then Thursday 30th May. As usual, there are some special dates for you to keep in the summer diary, notably our 15th Birthday Race Day on Sunday 23 June. Yes it has been that long since Ffos Las had its first meeting, and we are going to celebrate in style with Wales and Lions Rugby Legend Mike Phillips in attendance, plus Cor Curiad Ladies choir, The Brothers Of Blues and the amazing ABBA tribute act ABBAMANIA – It really is going to be a celebration.

We also have an “Elvis Live” race night on the evening of Wednesday 10th July (with Two Elvis’s performing live on stage before and after racing) there will be prizes for best Elvis fancy dress so get your Blue Suede Shoes on and book your tickets. Of course not lets not forget Ladies Day on Friday 23 August with Boyzlife and Who’s Molly confirmed as the two acts performing live on the day.

It’s really going to be a summer to remember at Ffos Las Racecourse, and look forward to seeing you all with us.

Remember, you really cant beat a great day at the races!

FFOS LAS is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

THANK YOU OUR RACEDAY SPONSORS

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The one who stands out is the unexposed JASMIN DE GRUGY, who was narrowly outpointed by a rapid improver on his handicap bow at Wincanton where he pulled miles clear of the rest An 8lb rise is easy to swallow both on account of the strength of that Wincanton form (the winner has gone in twice again since) and the potential he possesses. Shillanavogy opened his account on his first run following a wind op at Hereford and he rates the main danger ahead of Senor Diaz and Richardson.
