GENTLEMEN’S DAY FEATURING THE WELSH CHAMPION HURDLE
SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER Official Raceday Programme & Form Guide | £3
WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
A warm welcome to Gentleman’s Day with the feature race, the £50,000 Potter Group Welsh Champion Hurdle. We are expecting a great crowd this afternoon and I hope everyone has an enjoyable time with us. The autumn/winter jump season started with some superb racing at Chepstow last weekend and it’s great to see more top quality action here today. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Welsh Champion Hurdle. In 1921 it was a three mile handicap run at the Easter meeting of Cardiff’s racecourse in the suburb of Ely, with a prize of £500! The race attracted some high class horses when run at Chepstow in the late 1960s and 1970s. The triple Champion Hurdler Persian War won the inaugural contest in 1969, and a series of other great horses took the race in the next ten years – Bula, Comedy Of Errors (twice), Lanzarote, Night Nurse (twice), Monksfield and Sea Pigeon. The first running of the race at Ffos Las was in 2011. Top class winners include Oscar Whisky, The New One and the Welsh-trained Silver Streak. See more information on the history of the race on page 10. My thanks go to James Potter and his team at the Potter Group for their sponsorship of today’s renewal. Today’s other sponsors are Gower Brewery, Seel & Co, Canter Carpet, the friends and family of David Lloyd, Fedwen Tentage and Tommy Williams. I hope they have a great day with us. Don’t forget after racing we have the Oasis Experience playing live on the ground floor of the Grandstand. We have a busy programme of meetings next year. One of the highlights is the Kaiser Chiefs Race Night on Thursday 2nd June, the first day of the new Bank Holiday weekend. Full details are on our website. Over at Chepstow, Paloma Faith will be performing live after racing on Friday 8th July. The Potter Group Welsh Champion Hurdle fixture has been moved next year and will directly follow Chepstow’s Unibet Jump Season Opener creating a three-day festival in Wales. The dates in question are Friday 7th October to Sunday 9th October. Our next meeting is on Thursday 28th October when we have a fixture transferred from Southwell. The first of seven races goes off at 1.20pm. If you have questions about Ffos Las, please feel free to drop me line – pbell@arenaracingcompany.co.uk or contact Simon Rowlands, the General Manager at Ffos Las at srowlands@arenaracingcompany.co.uk. Potter Group is an integrated group of business solution companies and a leading provider of sustainable waste management solutions throughout Wales and parts of the West Midlands. As a third-generation, family-run business with a rich local heritage and an extensive, multi-purpose recycling infrastructure, The Group combine unlimited capabilities with exceptional customer service to support all your waste management needs across Wales, the borders and West Midlands. From converting waste into renewable energy to power thousands of households in Wales to repurposing carpet waste for the equestrian market, Potter Group have been at the forefront of sustainable resource management innovation for several decades. We operate a waste transfer station and five recycling centres across Wales, processing all types of commercial, household and garden waste. These operations are supported by our sustainably-focussed carpet recycling, composting and biomass plants, while our three landfill sites turn residual waste products into renewable heat and electricity. As a multi-disciplinary company, Potter Group also operate a number of services to complement our waste management and recycling facilities. These include domestic and commercial skip waste collections, as well as trade refuse and recycling collection throughout Shropshire, Mid Wales, North Wales and Anglesey and the North West with our joint venture partner, Gaskells Waste Services. The Group’s skip hire service provides a choice of over 200 skips to serve customers throughout Wales, the borders and West Midlands, while our scrap metal facility covers Wales and the Welsh borders and accepts all types of metals for recycling. In addition to these core business areas, Potter Group have built an extensive property division, owning a number of commercial and
or: Potter Group residential properties across Powys, as well as the Potters Garage petrol station in Welshpool. Since 2011, it has been carefully redeveloped by the Potter family into an outstanding equine centre, with each listed building sympathetically restored and converted to the highest standards. The restoration of Leighton Farm is a long-term project and will continue for several years. Leighton Farm also houses the acclaimed Yorton Stud Farm, one of the country’s fastest-growing stud operations The Group is also highly active in the equestrian field, owning and managing a dynamic team of 25 National Hunt racehorses which run in company livery and promote the Group at national events. The equestrian division is complemented by our innovative carpet fibre product, Canter Carpet, which recycles synthetic carpet fibres into all-weather equestrian surfaces. Throughout all our operations, we maintain a strong focus on sustainability and innovation, sourcing technologies and embracing best practice which helps us reduce our impact on the environment and benefit the local communities we operate in. Collectively, we are working to build a brighter tomorrow for future generations.
Ffos Las Statistics
The three winning most National Hunt trainers at Ffos Las are Welsh. Evan Williams leads the way with 112 winners, with Peter Bowen not far behind on 105 and Rebecca Curtis on 85. Williams trained Plunkett, the winner of the very first race here in 2009. Its owner, Mr T Hywel Jones, commissioned him to buy a horse to run at the inaugural meeting, and that idea evolved into wanting to win the first on the card. Word got round and he was sent off at 15/8. The stable apprentice Donal Fahy rode him to victory, and further success for the yard followed in the fourth race, which A P McCoy won on stablemate Danehill Willy. Several horses have won four times at Ffos Las, one of which was West With The Wind in 2010 and 2011. Evan Williams trained the horse for Mrs Janet Davies, a great supporter of the track whose dark green and white colours have won 25 races here, a total beaten only by J P McManus and the course’s creator Dai Walters. Probably her best horse was Court Minstrel, twice a winner of Chepstow’s Silver Trophy and nine other races besides. The top flat jockey at Ffos Las this year was Welshman David Probert, with an astonishing 55% strike rate owing to having eleven winners from his twenty rides. Oisin Murphy, who is at Ascot today fighting for his third consecutive jockeys’ title, has an excellent seven from twenty-one. Probert’s main trainer Andrew Balding has been responsible for seven winners from his fifteen runners, but Hughie Morrison was the man to watch with five winners from only eight runners.

REMEMBERING THE ANTHONYS: CARMARTHENHIRE’S FAMOUS RACING BROTHERS Such is the fame of the Anthony brothers – Jack, Ivor and Owen – that many years after their deaths a public house in Ely, Cardiff was named after them - ‘The Anthonys.’ Jack, who was the youngest, won the Grand National three times as an amateur rider on Glenside (1911), Ally Sloper (1915) and Troytown (1920). Like his brothers, he learned to ride as soon as he could walk at his father’s farm in Carmarthenshire. He rode his winner at Ludlow when only 16. A strong and courageous jockey, he was without equal at Aintree, where he ruled supreme. He would always take the most dangerous but shortest way around on the inside of the course. Besides his three wins in the world’s greatest steeplechase, Jack also finished second twice (Old Tay Bridge 1925 and 1926) and third once on (Bright’s Boy 1927). He was champion jockey as an amateur in 1914, when he rode 60 winners and as a professional, he won it again with 78 wins in 1922. Ivor won the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham on Timothy Titus, a horse bred by his father. The same year, 1904, he was the leading gentleman rider and was champion jockey in 1912 with 78 winners to his credit. He was placed in the Grand National on three occasions and when he turned to training, saddled three winners of the Welsh Grand National. He also trained Kellsboro’ Jack, the 1933 Grand National winner with Welshman Evan Williams in the saddle. Other big races to go his way as a trainer included the 1938 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Morse Code and the 1934 Champion Hurdle winner Chenango. Owen is perhaps the least known of the famous trio but he did ride more than 100 winners. For the controversial Miss Dorothy Paget he trained the immortal Golden Miller to win the 1936 Cheltenham Gold Cup and in 1940 he brought off the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle double with Roman Hackle and Solford respectively. The management of Ffos Las is working on permanent recognition of these famous brothers at the course and will release more details in 2022. Brian Lee
History of Ffos L
As long ago as 1974 the then Cheltenham racecourse manager Jack Bennett had an idea that there was potential for a racecourse in the south west of Wales. He looked round the area and for a time considered the site of a farm on the Gower peninsula, only to decide it was too small. In 1993 he was on holiday in Barbados where he met racehorse owner John Moreton, whose best-known horse was the 1988 Grand National winner Rhyme’N’Reason. Moreton introduced Bennett to Mel Davies, another prominent owner whose Cwmbran-based company Faucets was a prolific sponsor of decent races. Davies was born in Maesglas, in Newport. He began his career as a heating engineer and did so well that he formed his own company, South Wales Shower Supplies. Later this was renamed Faucets. He also had become involved in racehorse ownership, and being a proud Welshman he named one John Charles, after the famous Welsh footballer of the 1950s. The best horse Davies owned was Barnbrook Again, who though top class had the misfortune to be around at the same time as his stablemate Desert Orchid and was always overshadowed by him. Bennett and Davies conversed about the lack of a racecourse in West Wales. Jack mentioned a site in Pembrey adjacent to the motor sports centre. The pair worked on the idea of a new Welsh racecourse and applied to the British Horseracing Board for fixtures, but they were turned down due to insufficiently detailed plans. Three years later they tried again, having found another suitable site at Pembrey, and were rebuffed again. Part of the site was used for weapons testing by NATO and US air crews. The MoD had initially agreed not to carry out low-flying military exercises
Las Racecourse there on race days, but later reversed its position. In September 2001 the plan for a racecourse at Pembrey was abandoned. Soon after, the site of an abandoned open-cast mine at Trimsaran became available and its owner Celtic Energy approached Dai Walters, one of the leading businessmen in south Wales, a man with money, enterprise and expertise of major landscaping projects. He was brought up in Rhigos, between Neath and Merthyr Tydfil. From the same village came Dai Morris, who was a wing forward at the time of rugby great Gareth Edwards and was commonly known as “Gareth’s shadow”. Walters was a self-made man who loved his racing and knew of the attempts of Bennett and Davies to get a course at Pembrey. Armed with the support of the local authority and community, his plans passed muster with the BHA in 2003. More bureaucracy had to be overcome – and a recession struck in 2008 – but by the summer of 2009 the post-industrial eyesore had become West Wales’s first racecourse for over eighty years. More about the course’s history can be read in the book Ffos Las: The Birth of a Racecourse, on sale in the racecourse office.

Not the easiest of races to assess, but HASHTAG VAL looked a useful prospect when third on her sole run over hurdles in France last autumn and with her new yard among the winners she is taken to make light of her absence. The way FAIRLAWN FLYER quickened clear when making a winning handicap bow at Perth, strongly suggested that this 8lb higher mark will be within reach. The 5-y-o remains open to improvement and he gets the nod ahead of Lily Glitters, who put in good late work when fourth at Uttoxeter last time. History of the Welsh
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Welsh Champion Hurdle. In 1921 it was a three mile handicap run at the Easter meeting of Cardiff’s racecourse in the northern suburb of Ely, with a prize of £500. The following year “some first class horses” turned out, according to the Western Mail, though its racing coverage was almost secondary to that of its ‘Woman Correspondent’, who filled a whole column describing what the elite ladies of South Wales society were wearing. More than two columns were necessary in 1924 to report the names of prominent racegoers and the fashions, by which time to Mail had upgraded to a ‘Lady Correspondent’. The description of the actual racing was much shorter. Zarane, “probably the best hurdler in the country at the moment,” had to carry 12 stone 12 pounds in the big race, but he could not concede the weight to Kiwi, who was winning for the fourth time in a row. Unfortunately, the economic depression and competition from the new Chepstow track in the second half of the 1920s led to the Welsh Champion Hurdle suffering a swift decline. Prize money dropped to £400 in its third year, and then £250 in 1928, which was not enough to justify the word “champion” in its title; it was renamed “the Welsh Hurdle Race”. By this time it was run over two and a quarter miles. Before long it was worth only £100 and then just £70 before disappearing from the calendar in 1935. The first post-war Welsh Grand National was run at Newport’s Caerleon course on Easter Monday 1948. The Welsh Champion Hurdle was revived seven weeks later, at its two-day Whitsun meeting, with a handsome £750 of prize money. Sadly, it was the briefest of comebacks, as that was the last ever Newport fixture. The Welsh National moved the following year to Chepstow, where the premier contest over the sticks was worth
h Champion Hurdle only £400 and called the Welsh Grand Annual Handicap Hurdle. John Hughes was a much-admired clerk of the course who in the late 1960s was determined to put Chepstow on the map. He succeeded in bringing in sponsors, thereby attracting regular TV coverage of its National Hunt meetings on Saturdays. One of his ploys was the resurrection of the Welsh Champion Hurdle. He realised there were few suitable races for top class hurdlers after they had run at the Cheltenham Festival. The triple Champion Hurdler Persian War won the inaugural contest in 1969, and a series of other great horses took the race in the next ten years – Bula, Comedy Of Errors (twice), Lanzarote, Night Nurse (twice), Monksfield and Sea Pigeon. The standard slipped a little in the 1980s and by the 1990s it was generally a race for above average handicappers, though mention must be made of the Martin Pipe-trained Potentate. His nine course victories included three in this race from 1997-99. After the 2002 running the fixture list was revised, Chepstow lost its Easter meeting and the Welsh Champion Hurdle disappeared from the programme again. The creation of the new course at Ffos Las sparked the fourth revival of the race in 2011. After some experimentation regarding its conditions, distance, and time of year it has settled in its current mid-October slot as a two mile handicap with a restricted weight range. Top class winners include Oscar Whisky, The New One and the Welsh-trained Silver Streak. Sceau Royal, who finished first in 2020, is a winner of 14 races so far. Hopes are high that the Welsh Champion Hurdle can continue to attract horses of this calibre. The race is currently sponsored by the Potter Group.
