THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM Located on the Champagne Lawn, The Old Weighing Room was once the jockey’s changing room but is now a stylish race day and bar. The Old Weighing Room can also be hired for private events and weddings.

Horses will arrive in the pre-parade ring approximately 20 minutes before the race. Once saddled up they are taken to the parade ring before the jockeys mount.

2. PLACE YOUR BETS 15 mins before the race

Visit one of our betting shops, kiosks or independent bookmakers. Hunt out the best odds for the horse you’ve picked and keep hold of your slip!

3. WATCH THE RACE Get a good view! Find a good vantage point, either trackside or in one of our stands. Remember to note which colour silks your jockey is wearing so you can track them in the race and cheer them home!

4. WINNER’S PRESENTATION Immediately after the race Witness the elation of the winning connections as their St Leger hero returns to the parade ring. Now is the time to admire the magnificent St Leger trophy and the unique silk cap awarded to the champion.

A listed winner in the Nijinsky Stakes at Leopardstown over 1m4f. Was well beaten when ninth of 11 in the Irish Derby but bounced back with a solid second in the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown.

Has raced five times this season, winning the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in late September on his latest run. Step up in trip an unknown but bids for the five-timer today.

HIGH DEFINITION

SCOPE

Unbeaten on both occasions as a two-year-old, including the Group 2 Beresford Stakes. Unable to land a blow yet as a three-year-old yet but has the cheekpieces applied for the first time here.

Finished ahead of Mojo Star by just a nose when victorious on debut on the heavy going at Newbury. Put in a sound effort in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at the Ebor Festival at York when 2 ¼ lengths fifth behind Yibir.

A son of the unbeaten Frankel, this colt has already been successful in the Dante, Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris. He goes well on all surfaces and is looks a key player stepping up in trip.

Another from the Aidan O’Brien stable, this Camelot colt got off the mark at the third time of asking as a two-year-old. A Listed winner at Navan over 1m5f this season and wasn’t beat far by rivals in this field in the Gordon Stakes and Great Voltigeur Stakes.

INTERPRETATION

THE MEDITERRANEAN

A Galileo colt who has won three times already this season. A Listed winner in the Vinnie Rose Stakes at Leopardstown and beat other St Leger entry Fernando Vichi over today’s trip.

A winner of one of his six starts when landing a Maiden at Leopardstown, Aidan O’Brien will be hoping one of his four horses can land a blow in this classy contest. His second last time out in the Great Voltigeur Stakes could make him a player.

Another to fall to the well-fancied Hurricane Lane in the Irish Derby. However, he finished 3 ¼ lengths ahead of his rival in the Cazoo Derby at Epsom for trainer Richard Hannon.

Andrew Balding looks for his first St Leger win with this Camelot colt. Third as a two-yearold in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood behind Battleground. Subsequently won the Chester Vase Stakes and was finished off strongly when third in the Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Official BHA ratings explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The bookmakers are located in front of the Grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Where to bet

Minimum Stakes

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs.

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

Racing Knowledge Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey

connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.

Bar Term used when describing

bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.

Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits

in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.

Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate. Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin

that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.

Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level. Draw A horse’s starting position in

the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.

Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post. Handicap A race where each horse

Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s. Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.

Tongue Tie Strip of material tied

around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time).

Visor Similar to blinkers, but with

a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).

Weighing In/Out Each jockey

(wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

Clerk of the Course, I’m responsible for track management and race-day preparation at Doncaster.

My fondest memories are of lobbing for Doncaster to host the Silver Vase Mares Chase on December 29th.

BEFORE JOINING THE ORGANISATION, WHAT OTHER JOBS HAVE YOU HELD? I was a professional huntsman, looking after the training and welfare of the hounds and riding out to check the hunt course. I then put myself through my clerking qualifications and took up the role of Clerk of the Course at Southwell, moving on to add Doncaster and Sedgefield to my roster of tracks, including stints supporting Lingfield Park and Worcester. I have been Clerk of Doncaster for just shy of 10 years, relinquishing my other course responsibilities a number of years ago, to full concentrate on Doncaster, and it ensure it delivers the grade one experience our owners and trainers expect. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING OR FUNNY EVENT YOU EXPERIENCED ON THE CLOCK? A major part of a clerk role is ensuring the track is safe to race and free of non-racing obstacles. On one particular occasion the horses were at the start, when I notice a small cricket game being set up in the middle of the track up at rose hill, which is about a quarter of the way up the track from the Leger start. I asked the starter to hold the horses, and sent up the grounds team to respectfully request the “cricket match” was disbanded, or the alternative fate would be being trampled by some horses travelling around 38 miles per hour and that may hurt a little more than being hit by a cricket ball. 24

Lady Buttons became of fixture of the race, and it was always a magical race. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE CAZOO ST LEGER MEETING? I have worked across numerous race tracks and there is nothing quite like the Leger roar. Doncaster hosts a very enthusiastic flat racing crowd and when the horses are pushing towards the finish line there is nothing else quite like it, sends tingles up your spine. Last years meeting was behind closed doors, and the silence echoed round the racecourse, so I for one am looking forward to hearing the crowd roar as the finishing post is crossed, it really is spectacular. WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OUR GUESTS VISITED WHILST IN DONCASTER? I find the Racecourse is quite nice at this time of year… For me the Goffs Sales house next to the racecourse when the sales are on, it is a really amazing experience when horse are being sold for significant sims of money, I hasten to add, I’m not in the purchasing chair. WHAT DOES LEGER WEEK MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY? We race 36 times a year at Doncaster, every meeting, every horse, member of stable staff and jockey has the same care and is just as important, whether it’s a handicap race in April or a Saturday in September.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE COMPANY? I am the Head Chef for the North, with responsibility for Doncaster. BEFORE JOINING ARENA RACING COMPANY, WHAT OTHER ROLES HAVE YOU HELD? Before moving across to England, I was a chef at the University of Ulster. I then moved to take up the Head Chef role at the University of Nottingham, I began my career with Arena Racing at Southwell racecourse, beginning as an agency chef before becoming full time in 2007. In 2015 I moved on to take up the Head Chef role at Uttoxeter Racecourse. I moved to Doncaster in October 2019.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF FOOD AND DISH TO COOK? I adore Jerusalem artichoke, and have used it across the hospitality menus for the Cazoo St leger Festival with a velouté, crispy artichoke skins, a puree and some Artichoke crisps it is a truly versatile vegetable. We have a new restaurant this year, called The Sky Garden which offers a seven-course tasting menu, it been fantastic to work on and i‘m looking forward to seeing all the concepts move from paper to plate.

WHAT DOES LEGER WEEK MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY?

I was working at Tuttons Brassiere in Covent Garden in London; it was my first evening service leading the team.

This is my first Leger festival running a team of 65 staff across 11 kitchens. It feels a real privilege and honour to handed the baton and the trust to deliver the hospitality across the site.

The afternoon team has neglected to wire brush down the char grill, so we merrily started service, and it wasn’t long until flames were licking the ceiling, we tried everything to put the fire out, using extinguishers and fire blankets. Nothing worked, so a call was duly made to the fire brigade who came in, literally sprayed what looked like a can of deodorant on the fire, turned to me and tutted, before walking away and leaving me feeling som- what small. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WORK MEMORY? I worked at Chelmsford racecourse many years ago, and we were hosting the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. The Queens Equerry shared with me that Her Majesty enjoyed a pot a tea, but time never allowed. We offered the equerry a wager, that we could deliver lunch in good enough time for the Queen to able to enjoy a pot of tea. The wager was won, with the equerry standing a drink for the kitchen brigade. 40

WHAT DOES YOUR LEGER WORKING WEEK LOOK LIKE? Planning for the Cazoo St Leger Festival, started almost as soon as I took on the role. The main week its self begins on Sunday with starting to brief all the kitchen teams, ensuring that get to know the layout of the site and know where they are working. We will have deliveries arriving on site across the week, we have a few “groceries” coming in; On the shopping list we have around 2,000 chicken breasts, 500 fillets of beef, 2,000 Kilos of potatoes, 500 baby pineapples and around 60kg of black currents…… And the odd artichoke! Monday and Tuesday are all about the preparation and working with Doncaster EHO, to ensure everything we do is safe, and consistent. The final team brief takes place on Tuesday night, then from Wednesday through to Saturday its’ all about service and looking after the teams’ welfare and all our guests’ requirements.

Yorkshire’s only Classic The St Leger Stakes is not only the World’s Oldest Classic, it’s the only Classic in Yorkshire… and that makes it pretty special. The first running of the Cazoo St Leger was back in 1776 at Cantley Common, before the event was moved to Doncaster in 1778, where it has called home ever since. However; wartime disruption, resulting in the St Leger being transferred to Newmarket in World War 1, and again in (194244), the event also resided in Thirsk (1940), Manchester (1941), and York (1945). Most impactfully on 3 September when Prime Minster Neville Chamberlain broadcast to the nation that Great Britain was at war, the St Leger was cancelled. The outbreak of World War 2 made the St Leger the only British Classic to have missed a year since its inaugural running.

With the longest roll of honour in racing; let’s look back at some of the fierce rivalries and successes in this prestigious race.

The story starts with a bay mare owned by Lord Rockingham the event’s first organiser. None of the inaugural races 6 runners were formally named; until 1913 there was no requirement for threeyear-old British racehorses to have official names. It was only in 1828 in a British Racing Publication that the winner was named ‘Allabaculia’, a name thought to derive from the 18th century adventurer Ali Bay Kuli.

The Cazoo St Leger Stakes is also final leg of the English Triple Crown; which begins with the 2000 Guineas and continues with the Cazoo Derby at Epsom Downs. Therefore; one of the Cazoo St Leger’s most celebrated winners; is undoubtedly West Australia; who became the first horse to achieve the triple crown, galloping to glory in 1853, for trainer John Scott, who remains the race’s leading trainer, with a remarkable 16 victories. Fast forward a few decades and in 1902 a filly named Sceptre was to enter the record books, winning not only the St Leger; but both the 1902 1000 and 2000 Guineas within 2 days of each other, and polishing it off with a victory in the Epsom Oaks, all in the same year. Sceptre became the only winner of four Classics, a feat that still remains unchallenged.

The most recent success was that of Nijinsky in 1970, who provided jockey Lester Piggott with a seventh win in the St Leger Stakes. Nijinsky not only won the English Triple Crown, but also celebrated victories in the Irish St Leger - an event inspired by Yorkshire’s Classic.

In recent years the English Triple Crown has proved out of reach for many challengers. Several horses have won the first two legs of the series, but found the Cazoo St Leger a step too far. A story too true for odds-on favourite Camelot; a scintillating champion in the 2012 2000 Guineas and Derby, but unable to claw back the lead of Godolphin’s Encke, so had to settle for second in the St Leger.

The 2021 renewal of the Cazoo St Leger looks set to be a cracker, with Godolphin’s Irish Derby winner Hurricane Lane the hot favourite.

He will up against a strong field, however, which includes the Cazoo Derby second Mojo Star, trained by Richard Hannon and Johnny Murtagh’s Ottoman Emperor, winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, not to mention four runners from the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard, including the supplemented High Definition.
