Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Chase

Raceday Day Two

Preview

14:00

Quite a few of these come into this Veterans Handicap Chase with questions to answer and the solid one looks to be CHAMPAGNESUPEROVER for in form Olly Murphy. In his first go in Veterans company he was sent off a well backed 10/11 Fav at Catterick, he unseated Beau Morgan there when travelling well. He then went to Hereford and could be called the winner a long way out, he looked to have plenty in hand that day and he was rated much higher than this in the past, he looks to have a great chance of going in again.

14:35

Koenigsstern made a good start over fences with two seconds before an easy victory at Fontwell, He then disappointed at Huntingdon on soft ground. He could bounce back in first time cheek pieces, but preference is for TOMMY CULLEN, the change of stable seems to have done the trick with him, he was an impressive winner last time out over course and distance and is fancied to go in again returned to Doncaster where he is building up a decent record

15:07

Shuil Ceoil appreciated the switch back to hurdling when scoring at Fontwell last time out and is respected.

SERGEANT FURY is an interesting runner here for Harry Derham. He ran well on debut at Wincanton and again showed promise on first start over hurdles at Southwell. He was then below form on his last two starts but that was at time where the yard was struggling for form. He returns here into a handicap, up in trip and with his yard going well and a mark of 104 looks workable based on his first two efforts.

15:40

Ski Lodge improved for the step up to 3 miles last time out when winning at Haydock, he is respected with more improvement to come but preference is for THANK YOU MA’AM, he has shown massive improvement in handicaps this season and ran well in a valuable Ascot Handicap last time out, he looks the one to beat.

16:15

A trappy contest, Jac Jumper has been consistent and should give his running again. JUST GINO has run well in defeat the last twice since the cheek pieces have been added, it’s still early days with him and there could be more to come, he gets the vote in a tough race

16:50

Not much to go on here and the market will be very informative, DANGER NAP was a good second on debut at Aintree and was only beaten six lengths at Cheltenham last time out. He sets the standard here and should go well in a tricky looking end to the card.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
