WELCOME

THE BETFRED ST LEGER The highlight of our eight-race card is the Group 1 Betfred St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest Classic and the final Classic of the season. Some of the greatest horses, jockeys and trainers in our sport have pursued Betfred St Leger glory, and this afternoon another horse and its connections will forever become part of that remarkable story.

Today, Doncaster makes history. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Doncaster Racecourse for an extraordinary moment in the history of our racecourse, our city and our sport – the 250th running of the Betfred St Leger Stakes. Since 1776, the St Leger has been woven into the fabric of Doncaster. For two and a half centuries, generations have gathered here on Town Moor to witness this great race. Champions have been crowned, careers have been made and moments created that have become part of British sporting history.

My sincere thanks go to Betfred, our Festival partner, and to all our sponsors, partners, racing participants, colleagues and volunteers whose support makes this wonderful occasion possible. We have also created a celebration worthy of this historic day, with entertainment across the racecourse, we also have an artist in residence to capture the winning horse cross the line, to ensure the moment is captured for future race goers in the future.

But the St Leger has always meant far more to Doncaster than one horse race. Racing has helped shape our city, bringing people together, attracting visitors from across Britain and around the world, and providing opportunities and careers for generations of local people. From racing, hospitality and catering to grounds, events, hotels, media, security and the many businesses that benefit from the thousands of people who visit, the impact of racing reaches far beyond the racecourse.

Most importantly, thank you to you for joining us. Whether today is your first visit to Doncaster Racecourse or the continuation of a family tradition stretching back generations, you are now part of the Betfred St Leger’s story too. It is an enormous privilege to welcome you as we celebrate, 250 years of history and an extraordinary connection between a race and its city.

For many people in Doncaster, racing isn’t simply something they watch. It is part of their lives, their families and their city’s identity.

In another 250 years, people will still tell the story of the St Leger.

As the Executive Director of Doncaster Racecourse, I am immensely proud to be the custodian of this remarkable race at this moment in its history. None of us truly owns the Betfred St Leger; our responsibility is to care for it, celebrate its heritage and ensure it continues to thrive for the generations who will follow us.

Today, we get to say we were here. Enjoy every moment.

Rach

RACH HARWOOD Executive Director

That makes today’s 250th running particularly special. The Betfred St Leger has endured through centuries of extraordinary change, yet every September Doncaster continues to come together around a sporting tradition that began here in 1776. That enduring relationship between the horse, the race and the city is something we should all be incredibly proud of. Today, another chapter will be written.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING

ALLOWANCE The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience. AMATEUR (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur licenseholder status. APPRENTICE A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season. BAR Term used when describing

bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.

BIT Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse. BLINKERS A form of headgear worn by

the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.

CHEEKPIECES Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing. CLERK OF THE COURSE RACECOURSE official responsible

for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.

CLERK OF THE SCALES Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried. COLOURS Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys. The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.

CONNECTIONS The owner and trainer of a racehorse. DISTANCE The length of a race DAM Mother of a horse. DRAW A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only. FILLY Female horse four-years-old or younger. FOAL Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year. FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post. GELDING Castrated horse. GOING Description of the course conditions under foot. HAND Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder.

PHOTO FINISH Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish. RACECARD The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme. RATING A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highestrated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s. SCHOOLED Trained to jump. SIRE Father of a horse. SPRINT RACES Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs. STEWARDS ENQUIRY Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running. TONGUE TIE Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time). UNDER STARTER’S ORDERS

Occurs when the race is about to start.

JUDGE Official responsible for declaring VISOR Similar to blinkers, but with the finishing order and distances a slit in each eye cup to allow some between horses. lateral vision. HANDICAP A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.

MARE Female horse aged five years old or above. MIDDLE DISTANCES On the Flat, COLT Male, ungelded horse, up to four races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. WEIGHING IN/OUT Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets. YEARLING Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

RATINGS EXPLAINED Selected to win the race Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims Unlikely to win but not totally without hope Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ‘ratings’ to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? COLOUR Grey (Gr) – light to steel

Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The bookmakers are located in front of the Grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.

THE FACES

NIKKI GRIFFITHS

GENERAL MANAGER

NOTHING COMPARES TO THE ROAR OF THE CROWD FOR THE ST LEGER. WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE, AND WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE AT THE RACECOURSE? General Manager.

One of my most memorable experiences came during the 2022 festival, following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the opening day. As a mark of respect, the following two days of racing were cancelled and the schedule was rearranged, with tributes taking place throughout the racecourse when racing resumed on the Sunday. Seeing the racing industry, media, and racegoers come together to honour Her Majesty was incredibly poignant and remains one of the most unforgettable moments of my career.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE DONCASTER RACECOURSE TEAM? I’ve been part of the racecourse team for nearly 14 years. WHAT DID YOU DO FOR WORK BEFORE JOINING DONCASTER RACECOURSE? I used to be the Events Manager at Doncaster Chamber.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE? Without a doubt the AMAZING team!

HOW MANY ST LEGER FESTIVALS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN? This will be my 14th St Leger working at the racecourse, but prior to working here I always used to attend on Ladies Day.

WHICH PART OF THE RACECOURSE IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE, AND WHY? I can’t pick one place, but some of my favourites are The Old Weighing room and the Sky Garden.

WHICH DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS YOUR FAVOURITE, AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR YOU? I love the buzz of Ladies Day as the opening day to the festival, but nothing compares to the Roar of the crowd for the St Leger race, it makes me emotional every year!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE COLOUR WHEN IT COMES TO JOCKEY’S SILKS? It’s always super special to see HR the King’s silks at Doncaster. ARE YOU EXCITED TO CELEBRATE 250 YEARS OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL? Without a doubt I think this year’s St Leger is going to be my most special yet. How everybody at the racecourse and throughout Doncaster have come together to celebrate the historic moment has made it even more special than normal.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL WEEK LIKE FOR YOU, DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ST LEGER MEMORY OR A STORY YOU LOVE TO TELL? A typical St Leger week is difficult to describe. It involves very little sleep, long hours, and an incredibly busy schedule, but every moment is worthwhile when we see the spectacular St Leger Festival come to life.

NOVEMBER HANDICAP

SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER FT. LIVE MUSIC THROUGHOUT

A REYT GOOD FAMILY DAY OUT. SINCE 1776.

ST LEGER

SUN 13 SEPT

250 ANNIVERSARY OF THE ST LEGER TH

From its humble origins in 1776 to a global celebration in 2026, the St Leger Stakes has stood the test of time. Here's how this great race came to define a sport, a town, and a tradition like no other. In 1776, on the wide-open turf of Doncaster's Town Moor, a local horse race was run—organised by Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger. That single contest would spark a tradition that still lights up the racing calendar today. Just four years later, it was officially named the St Leger Stakes. Over time, it became something even greater: the oldest of the five British Classics and the final leg of the

24

Triple Crown. Unlike any other, the Betfred St Leger tests not just speed, but stamina, class, and staying power. Some of the greatest names in racing have been crowned here. From West Australian, the first Triple Crown winner in 1853, to the unforgettable Nijinsky in 1970—the last to achieve that treble—the Betfred St Leger has produced unforgettable moments.

Recent champions like Hurricane Lane (2021) and Jan Brueghel (2024) show that the race continues to attract the best of the best. For breeders, owners, jockeys and fans, a St Leger winner is a legacy-maker. The Betfred St Leger isn't just part of Doncaster - it is Doncaster. Each September, the Betfred St Leger Festival draws crowds from far and wide, filling the town with energy, colour and history. The racecourse itself has evolved, but the beating heart of the St Leger remains unchanged. Events like Betfred St Leger day celebrate racing’s rich past and allow us to celebrate tradition, tension, and triumph which has captivated generations on Town Moor for many years.

BEST ODDS GUARANTEED ON ALL RACES AT DONCASTER

BETFRED CHAMPAGNE STAKES The Betfred Champagne Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 contest for two-year-old colts and geldings, run over 7 furlongs at Doncaster Racecourse. First established in 1823, the race has evolved considerably throughout its long history. Originally contested over a mile, the distance was reduced to 6 furlongs in 1870 before being extended to its current 7-furlong trip in 1962. Since 1988, the race has been restricted to male horses. The Betfred Champagne Stakes has developed a strong reputation as an important stepping stone towards the Dewhurst Stakes (G1), with several recent winners going on to success at Newmarket. Too Darn Hot and Chaldean both completed the double, underlining the quality of horses that have used Town Moor as a launchpad towards Group 1 glory. Chaldean achieved an even more notable feat in 2023, becoming the first horse since Rodrigo de Triano to win the Betfred Champagne Stakes at two before returning at three to claim the 2000 Guineas. His achievement further cemented the race’s reputation as a key pointer towards the following season’s Classics.

victories by a trainer, with 10 wins apiece. Richard Hannon Jr has also enjoyed considerable success in recent years, winning two renewals in the last decade. His record is particularly impressive, with all six of his runners in the race having either won or finished in the places. The betting trends also point towards the importance of backing horses near the head of the market. There have been just three winning favourites since 2016, but none of the last 10 winners has started at a bigger price than 8/1. That makes the Betfred Champagne Stakes a race where it can pay to focus on those towards the front of the betting.

The roll of honour is packed with outstanding performers, stretching back to Grundy in 1974 and including subsequent stars such as Toronado (2012), Too Darn Hot (2018) and Chaldean (2022). The 2024 winner, Bay City Roller, has since added two Group 1 victories to his record, landing the Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern and Coolmore Coronation Cup, both by wide margins. John Scott and Mathew Dawson share the record for the most Betfred Champagne Stakes

FROM RACEGOER TO BOOKMAKER

MY DONCASTER

Doncaster has always been my racecourse. Long before I ever stood in a betting ring on my own pitch as a bookmaker, it was the place where my family - like every family for miles around - went in early September as a matter of tradition. Three generations together, walking through the same gates, hearing the same sounds, feeling the same excitement that hung in the air like electricity. I’ve just celebrated my 78th birthday, but I can still picture myself as a young boy, holding my parents’ hands, my grandparents trailing behind, weaving through crowds that felt enormous. Back then Doncaster wasn’t just a racecourse - it was the beating heart of a town built on coal, graft, and community. The mining villages around Doncaster emptied during race week. It was a local holiday everyone looked forward to. Men who spent their lives underground (my dad included) came up into the daylight to join workers from the many factories dotted around the town - all mingling together for one week of colour, noise, excitement, and escape. The betting rings were vibrant in a way that’s hard to describe to anyone who didn’t see them. Packed, noisy, alive. Bookmakers calling the odds with voices that could cut through a gale. Tic-tac men flflashing ashing signals across the ring, their white-gloved hands whirling like windmills. Thousands upon thousands making the pilgrimage to the biggest race day in the north - the oldest of the Classics, the Doncaster St Leger.

sixteen. I went with three or four mates from our village - full of excitement, none of us with much money. We’d gone on the bus, feeling like kings for the day. Indiana won the St Leger that year. My memory of the race itself is hazy, but what hasn’t blurred with time is what came after. By the last race we were skint - not a penny left between us. So, we did what lads did back then: we walked home. Seven miles. Tired legs, empty pockets, but And the town centre during race week was a spectacle of spirits still high. its own. A hive of activity, full of characters larger than life. I was back at Town Moor the following year, 1965, and Escape artists drawing crowds with chains and padlocks. the contrast couldn’t have been sharper. Stalls, music, laughter, and all the fun of the fair. bottomless, the sort of surface only ducks and plough

The The oldest of the Classics.

I can still see Prince Monolulu in my mind’s eye - the colours, the feathers, the booming voice. To a young lad he looked like he’d stepped straight out of a storybook. “I gotta horse!” he’d shout, and people gathered around him as if he were royalty. In many ways, he was. My earliest memory of going to Doncaster on Leger Day under my own steam goes back to 1964, when I was

horses enjoy. The real buzz that year came from the presence of Bing Crosby. In the 1960s he wasn’t just a famous crooner - he was Hollywood royalty, the American equivalent of Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, and Harry Styles rolled into one. And there he was, in Doncaster, standing among the crowd like any other racegoer.

42

He didn’t just win - he destroyed the field, striding away by ten lengths in one of the biggest shocks in Leger history. Crosby had flown over specially to watch his horse Meadow Court run in the Leger. The horse was a hot favourite and almost everyone hoped he’d win it for Bing. But Meadow Court couldn’t quite pull it off. The St Leger became a test of survival rather than speed. Out of the gloom came Provoke, a 28/1 outsider, powering through the mud as if he’d been waiting all year for a bog. He didn’t just win - he destroyed the field, striding away by ten lengths in one of the biggest shocks in Leger history. Trailing in behind him came Meadow Court, slogging on bravely for second. Bing Crosby left Town Moor with more Doncaster turf on his shoes than Doncaster money in his pockets. Over the years I’ve seen many memorable Leger winners - proper horses with the speed to travel, the stamina to stay, and the guts of a pit pony. Horses like the great Nijinsky, ridden by Lester Piggott, who in 1970 completed the Triple Crown - the 2000 Guineas, Derby, and St Leger - something no horse has managed since. And who could forget Piggott’s eighth and final St Leger winner, Commanche Run, in 1984? One of those rides only Lester could produce. As a bookmaker, there are several St Leger winners I’d happily forget, particularly in recent years when the race has been dominated by Aidan O’Brien - the master craftsman of Ballydoyle. He’s trained the last three winners: Continuous (2023), Jan Brueghel (2024), and Scandinavia (2025). By 2001 I’d swapped sides. My venture into on-course bookmaking began with me buying my first first ever racecourse pitch - a lowly number on the second line of the main betting ring at Doncaster. Nowadays I’m firmly firmly on the side of the fence where instead of taking the odds, I’m shouting the odds. Over the years I’ve built up a decent portfolio of pitches, but as a Donny lad the three I have at Doncaster are at the heart of my business. Now things have come full circle. Just as I once went racing with my parents and grandparents, we’re back to three generations again - only this time I’m the one tagging along (just), sharing the pleasure of working our pitches with my two sons and their lads, my grandsons. For me, the family tradition lives on - no longer as a spectator in the stands, but as a bookmaker on a stand.

NIJINSKY WINNING THE 1970 ST LEGER WITH LESTER PIGGOTT

So, you’ve got a vested interest in Doncaster, I hear you say - but what’s so good about it? Well, for a start, things aren’t what they used to be. The crowds of the sixties and seventies have long gone, and so have Prince Monolulu, the tic-tacs, the escape artists, and the pits that fed the town. The bookmakers with their satchels and ledgers have been replaced by a new

43

generation working from stalls lit up like miniature fairgrounds. Where once you’d see a man with a pencil behind his ear and a dog-eared ledger under his arm, now you’ve got flashing LED boards, computerised systems, beeping scanners, and enough cables to wire up a small power station.

The old days were about the form book, the characters in the ring, and the roar for the favourite. Nowadays it’s different - most things are - but on the big days it’s still vibrant in its own way. The old days were about the form book, the characters in the ring, and the roar for the favourite. A day at the races today is more social, more stylised, and for many more about the experience than the betting. It’s champagne bars, selfies, group photos, live music, fancy outfits, and people treating the races like a festival with horses attached. Over the top, yes - but it all adds to the modern race day experience. On a big day like Doncaster St Leger day, the place looks like a catwalk colliding with a cocktail bar. For the ladies it’s bright dresses in every colour and style imaginable, fascinators that defy gravity, heels that don’t stand a chance if it’s soft going, designer handbags, sunglasses, and enough perfume to overpower the parade ring. For the gentlemen it’s sharp suits, pocket squares, shiny or suede shoes (with no socks), sunglasses even when it’s raining, haircuts that probably cost a day’s wages, the odd flamboyant number - velvet jackets, loud checks, the occasional bloke masquerading as a make-believe jockey riding a blow-up horse, and most likely a feller in a wedding dress on his bachelor day outing enjoying his last day of freedom. The fashions have changed beyond recognition. The old racegoers would hardly believe their eyes. But whether it was a flat cap and a Woodbine in 1966, or a three-piece suit and a glass of prosecco in 2026, I’d like to believe the real reason people come is the same:

The atmosphere, the thunder of the hoofbeats, and the smell of the crowd.

THE HORSES THAT MADE HISTORY

FAMOUS BETFRED ST LEGER WINNERS

WEST AUSTRALIAN (1853)

Legendary trainer John Scott - The Wizard of the North – won 40 Classic races in his career, including a record 16 Betfred St Leger Stakes. It was his 12th, West Australian, who holds the prestige of being the first horse to complete the Triple Crown. Cotherstone (also trained by Scott) was the first to attempt the landmark feat in 1843 but failed by a head. Despite doubts as to whether he would stay, West Australian sauntered past his rivals under jockey Frank Butler – becoming the first name on the storied roll of honour of the Triple Crown.

ORMONDE (1886)

One of the greatest thoroughbred racehorses of all time, known as ‘the horse of the century’, Ormonde was the fourth winner of the Triple Crown. After asserting his superiority over talented rivals Bard and St. Mirin in the first two Classics of the season, Ormonde was sent off at 1/7F to sweep the Classics. Ridden by the legendary Fred Archer, he pulled clear with half a mile to go and won by four lengths. He would retire unbeaten in 16 races as one of the true greats to have won the Betfred St Leger.

SCEPTRE (1902)

A mere supernatural horse, Sceptre holds a record which will never be broken – having won four of the five English Classics outright, only losing in the Derby. Formosa had won all four also in 1868 but dead-heated in the 2000 Guineas. In winning the Betfred St Leger, Sceptre became the fifth filly to win the Triple Crown and is immortalised with the Sceptre Stakes, on the final day of the Betfred St Leger Festival.

PRETTY POLLY (1904)

One of the greatest and most influential fillies ever to grace the racetrack, Pretty Polly was only the fifth filly to win the Fillies Triple Crown. In the same magical season, she also took victory in the Coronation Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. Her victory in the Betfred St Leger denied St. Amant his own Triple Crown success. She raced again here two days after that, landing the Park Hill Stakes by three lengths. She won 22 of her 24 starts, including winning 15 consecutive races. Her broodmare legacy can still be felt today.

OH SO SHARP (1985)

HYPERION (1933)

Perhaps one of the most influential sires of the 20th century. Hyperion was out of Gainsborough (a wartime Triple Crown winner) and emulated his sire by winning both the Derby and the Betfred St Leger. His victory in the final Classic of the season was a popular one, handing the 17th Earl of Derby a fifth victory in the race. Many modern-day greats can be traced back to Hyperion; such is his influence over the breeding sector.

NIJINSKY (1970)

A name revered in racing. The 15th and last three-year-old to achieve the fabled feat of completing the English Triple Crown, becoming the first horse in 35 years to do so. Partnered by ‘The Long Fellow’ Lester Piggott, the son of Northern Dancer waltzed his way into the history books – landing his sixth Group One success and his eleventh successive victory, maintaining his unbeaten record. A bout of ringworm in August threatened his attempt at immortality but Nijinsky duly obliged, cruising past his rivals whilst Piggott simply looked around – seeing no threat from behind. Nijinsky’s victory in the Berfred St Leger ushered him into the pantheon of greats, accomplishing a triumph which has yet to be repeated 56 years later.

OH SO SHARP (1985)

Ridden by Steve Cauthen, trained by Sir Henry Cecil and owned by Sheikh Mohammed, Oh So Sharp became the ninth and latest filly to land the Fillies’ Triple Crown in 1985 – 30 years after Meld achieved the feat. Only two fillies have won the Betfred St Leger since Oh So Sharp – User Friendly (1992) and Simple Verse (2015). Her Triple Crown success still stands the test of time and is a worthy tribute to one of the great modern-day fillies.

REFERENCE POINT (1987)

1987 was the last time the Derby winner won the Betfred St Leger. Camelot tried in 2012 in his quest to win the Triple Crown but was denied. Reference Point ended his career as the joint-eighth highest-rated racehorse in Timeform history. The son of the legendary Mill Reef had already won at Doncaster, taking the Futurity Trophy as a two-year-old. As customary, Reference Point galloped them into submission with Steve Cauthen biding his time until they hit uncharted territory. Mountain Kingdom tried but could not close on the runaway star.

BETFRED PARK STAKES The Betfred Park Stakes is a Group 2 contest run over 7 furlongs and is one of the key races on the Betfred St Leger Festival card at Doncaster Racecourse. Open to horses aged three and older, it has become an important autumn target for high-class sprinters and seven-furlong specialists. First introduced in 1978 as a Listed race, the contest was promoted to Group 3 level in 1986, when the distance was extended to a mile. It returned to its current 7-furlong trip in 2003 before being elevated to Group 2 status in 2004. Frankie Dettori remains the most successful jockey in the history of the Betfred Park Stakes, having ridden fifive ve winners. His roll of honour includes backto-back victories aboard Iffraaj in 2005 and 2006, while Kinross provided another memorable success for the Italian.

Older horses have traditionally held the upper hand in the Betfred Park Stakes, with three-year-olds finding the race particularly difficult finding difficult to conquer in recent years. The roll of honour features just four multiple winners: Bishop of Cashel (1995 and 1996), Iffraaj (2005 and 2006), Arabian Gleam (2007 and 2008) and Kinross (2022 and 2024). Kinross’s second victory in 2024 was particularly notable, with the popular seven-year-old sweeping past the field field to beat three-year-old Lead Artist by two lengths. The win completed a remarkable record for Kinross Kinross,, who had also landed the race in 2022.

Sir Michael Stoute leads the trainers’ standings with four victories. His most recent success came in 2018, The 2025 renewal produced another emphatic performance, as Andrew Balding’s Marvelman when Mustashry carried the colours of Shadwell powered clear under Oisin Murphy to defeat King’s Estate to victory. Gamble by just under four lengths. The victory gave Balding and Murphy their second Park Stakes The fastest winning time on record was set by success in three years, following Sandrine’s win in Pastoral Pursuits in 2004. Ridden by Steve Drowne, Drowne, 2023. he stopped the clock at 1:21.66. That recent record makes the Balding-Murphy partnership one to watch closely whenever the Betfred Park Stakes comes around. With a competitive seven-furlong trip, a history of rewarding experienced older horses and a roll of honour packed with quality, the race remains one of the most intriguing supporting contests of the Betfred St Leger Festival.

RACING, ROYALTY AND TRADITION

ROYAL ENGAGEMENTS

In the year of her coronation, her horse Aureole finished Royalty has a longstanding connection to third in the Betfred St Leger. Bred by her father King George the Betfred St Leger Stakes over its 250-year VI, it is accepted that Aureole could have won the race, but as a typical Hyperion colt, he was mercurial. Aureole would history, with various members of the Royal have a successful stud career, with St Paddy, Aurelius and Family having won the race. That Royal Provoke all becoming Betfred St Leger winners themselves. relationship goes back a long way and is deeply Betfred St Leger would continue to evade Her Majesty, connected to the history of the Betfred St Leger. The with Pindari (the daughter of Sun Chariot) finishing third In 1835, the heir to the throne – Princess Victoria – attended the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster to watch Queen Of Trumps complete the Oaks-Leger double. Her appearance helped draw a large crowd, who were already anticipating Queen Of Trumps’ attempt. The then-later Queen Victoria had no major passion for racing, unlike her predecessor King William IV – who bred Pocahontas, the Dam of 1852 St Leger winner Stockwell. However, after initially dispersing the Royal Stud, Queen Victoria re-established the stud back at Hampton Court – enjoying a multitude of successes. Perhaps her biggest success was La Fleche, who was bred by the Royal Studs. La Fleche would become only the fourth horse to complete the Fillies Triple Crown, retiring as one of the best of her generation – if not of all time. It was Queen Victoria’s eldest son, Edward VII, who would be a vital figure in British racing and in the history of Doncaster’s greatest race. Then Prince of Wales, Edward VII won the Betfred St Leger in 1896 with Persimmon, who would later become an influential influential sire – with Sceptre amongst his notable descendants. The Prince of Wales would enjoy more success in the Betfred St Leger as Diamond Jubilee, bred and owned by the Prince, became the ninth horse to land the Triple Crown. Diamond Jubilee was foaled during Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, so retained the name as a tribute to the monarch. He completed the Triple Crown by emulating his brother Persimmon, taking victory in the Betfred St Leger with ease. The next chapter in the Royal relationship with the Betfred St Leger comes with King George VI’s Sun Chariot. A filly, Sun Chariot became the temperamental but classy filly, seventh horse to complete the Fillies Triple Crown in 1942. Her first time that the success in the Betfred St Leger marked the first final Classic of the season. It reigning monarch had won the final also came as a much-needed morale boost, with the country deep in the throes of the Second World War. Sun Chariot’s sire was Hyperion, who had sired the winner of the Betfred St Leger the previous year, Sun Castle.

to the William Hill owned-Cantelo in 1959. Hopeful Venture went off the joint favourite for the 1967 St Leger but returned as the runner-up to Ribocco. Charlton was her first Classic runner trained by Dick Hern, and he finished fourth to Nijinsky.

It was in 1977, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, which Dunfermline gave Her Majesty a first success in Britain’s oldest Classic. Trained by Dick Hern, Dunfermline overcame a titanic tussle with subsequent dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged – handing one of the greatest thoroughbred horses of all time his sole defeat. Willie Carson aboard Dunfermline, downing Lester Piggott on Vincent O’Brien’s Alleged. A crowning victory for the Royal runner. In 2023, Desert Hero finished a gallant third behind the Aidan O’Brien-trained Continuous, under Tom Marquand, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla in attendance. Bred by the late Queen Elizabeth II, Desert Hero continued the tradition of Royal runners in the Betfred St Leger throughout the 250 years of the race.

THE ART OF

THE ST LEGER TROPHY

THE ST LEGER STAKES TROPHY The permanent St Leger stakes Trophy was designed by Chris Knight, Sarah Denny and Owen Waterhouse to celebrate the redevelopment of Doncaster Racecourse in 2007. The overall concept behind the St. Leger Stakes Trophy was to produce a classic yet modern piece of silverware that had the ability to be re-designed or reinvigorated each year. Hand wrought and weighing in at approximately 10KG, the solid silver trophy is composed of a large rose water dish with a central rose bowl. The large dish is the permanent trophy of the St. Leger Stakes whilst the central, removable, rose bowl is the ‘gift’ to the winner of the race. Each year a new contemporary designer silversmith is commissioned to design a new centre, thus re-interpreting and invigorating the main trophy through the coming years. To date there have been 22 original and bespoke designs produced and each year it offers reward, encouragement and recognition to a new silversmith. By harnessing the dedication and creativity of the silversmith in this trophy it in turn reflects the skill and determination required to become a winner in this sport.

THE 2026 BETFRED 250TH ST LEGER STAKES WINNERS CENTRE DESIGNED BY JEN RICKETTS Jen Ricketts hand-pierces her silver designs using the finest of saw blades, allowing her to create exceptionally intricate silverware. For the central section of the 250th Anniversary Doncaster St Leger Trophy, Jen wanted to celebrate the heritage of the St Leger and the city of Doncaster, host of

this worldfamous race with a city scape of Doncaster in the background and at the forefront of the design is a dramatic finish-line scene, depicting two horses racing neck and neck to capture the excitement, energy and atmosphere of race day. Fine details, such as the flowing saddle cloths, create a sense of movement and speed, conveying the power and grace of the thoroughbreds. Incorporated within the design are the dates 1776–2026, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the St Leger. The Doncaster city scape is made up of four key buildings; the Minster, the Corn Exchange, the Clock Tower Grandstand and the Red Lion Public House. The entire composition is framed within the outline of a Yorkshire rose, celebrating both Yorkshire’s identity and the race’s enduring heritage. The rose also creates a visual connection between the removable silver centrepiece and the larger trophy, allowing the central design to stand as a complete artwork while harmonising perfectly with the overall trophy.

“

I was honoured to be asked by Chris Knight and Doncaster Racecourse to design and create the centrepiece for the 250th Anniversary St Leger Trophy. It was an incredibly prestigious commission, but one that held personal signifi significance cance too. Having always had a great love of horses, creating this piece was something I had aspired to throughout my career as a silversmith. Working alongside Chris Knight was a really rewarding experience; being able to exchange ideas and develop the design together really pushed my creativity further than I expected.

”

- JEN RICKETTS

Jen’s fifinal nal design drawing became the template for the finished finished piece. Every intricate detail was then hand-pierced from silver sheet and layers together, preserving the expressive quality of her original illustration. This unique design is unmistakable, reflecting reflecting her distinctive style: the exquisitely detailed silver skylines and narrative scenes that Jen has become renowned for. So much so that in 2015 she was commissioned by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sheffield to produce a gift for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; a fifitting tting testament to her talent and to which she now adds the design and making of The Betfred 250th St Leger Stakes Winners Centre.

250 YEARS OF HISTORY

BETFREDSTLEGER FACTS

Doncaster Racecourse’s Betfred St Leger Stakes is the oldest Classic race in the world, celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2026. A race steeped in history with a roll of honour that encompasses all British horseracing. The biggest test a three-year-old can face - one mile, six furlongs on the Town Moor course – the St Leger marks the final challenge of completing the fabled English Triple Crown. The prize that awaits at the end is the chance of immortality. As the saying goes: “The fastest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest the Derby, and the best horse wins the St Leger.”

1776

1776 marked the inaugural running of the St Leger, proposed by Lt Col Anthony St Leger, at Cantley Common. The race was initially coined as “A Sweepstake of 25 Guineas” and was won by the filly Allabaculia.

1835

1835 saw the first winner of both the Oaks and the St Leger, as Queen Of Trumps cruised to victory, defeating the colts and writing her own piece of history. History would be written again four years later, as Charles The Twelfth and Euclid marked the race’s first dead heat. The former claimed the victory in the run-off.

1853

1853 saw history made as West Australian became the first horse to sweep the English Triple Crown. Winning the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and finally, the St Leger. 12 years later, Gladiateur became the first horse trained overseas to complete the Triple Crown, sealing it by winning the St Leger.

1868

Then in 1868, Formosa broke new ground, becoming the first horse to win the Fillies Triple Crown, adding the St Leger to her victories in the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks.

1897

The final act of the 19th century St Leger came in 1897 when Galtee More became the shortest-priced winner in the history of the St Leger at 1/10; in doing so, he became the seventh horse to complete the Triple Crown.

1939

On September 3rd, 1939, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that Britain was at war, and the St Leger was cancelled. Marking the first and only time a British Classic did not run.

1786

In 1786, Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton, won the race for the first time with his horse Paragon. He would win the St Leger a further six times, making him the winningest owner in the race’s history.

1800

1800 marked the first time which a horse won both the Derby and the St Leger, as the appropriately named Champion took victory in both.

1821

In 1821, legendary jockey Bill Scott took the first of nine victories in the St Leger – steering Jack Spigot to success. The following year, Theodore caused a seismic shock by winning the Classic at 200/1, the longest-priced winner in the race’s history.

1957

In 1957, Never Say Die won the St Leger by 12 lengths, a record margin which has yet to be bettered since.

1825

In 1825, Memnon (also piloted by Scott) came home first of 30 runners, a record which still stands today.

2019

1827

Then, in 1827. John Scott (Bill’s brother) trained his first of an astonishing 16 winners in the St Leger, the filly Matilda.

Many horses have broken the record for the fastest St Leger in history, but the feat currently belongs to Logician – who won the race in 2019 in a time of 3:00.27, under Frankie Dettori for John Gosden and Khalid Abdullah.

There is an adage from financial brokers which reads:

“Sell in May and go away, come back on St Leger’s Day.” The saying hails from London brokers and investors, who would sell their stocks in May – before their value declines- then come back in time for the St Leger Stakes, just before values rose again.

BETFRED ST LEGER STAKES The Betfred St Leger Stakes is the standout event of the year at Doncaster Racecourse and holds a unique place in British racing history. Established in 1776, the Group 1 contest for three-year-old colts and fillies is run over 1 mile and 6 furlongs and is Britain’s oldest Classic, as well as the final leg of the five-race Classic season. The five British Classics are the 2000 Guineas, 1000 The 2025 renewal was equally compelling, with Guineas, Oaks, Derby and the St Leger, all sponsored Scandinavia, ridden by Tom Marquand, getting the by Betfred. better of Roger Varian’s Rahiebb by a neck. In 2019, Juddmonte’s Logician set a new record for the fastest winning time, completing the race in 3:00.27. The widest winning margin came in 1954, when Never Say Die powered to a remarkable 12-length victory. More recently, the 2015 renewal provided one of the most dramatic finishes in the race’s history. Simple Verse crossed the line first, only to lose the race following a stewards’ enquiry involving Bondi Beach. After an appeal by Simple Verse’s connections, the decision was overturned and the Qatar Racingowned filly was reinstated as the winner. Her victory saw her join an illustrious group of fillies to have won the Betfred St Leger, including Meld (1955), Cantelo (1959), Dunfermline (1977), Sun Princess (1983), Oh So Sharp (1985) and User Friendly (1992). The 2023 running added another memorable chapter when HM The King and Queen made a surprise visit to Doncaster to watch Desert Hero contest the Betfred St Leger Stakes. The occasion was heightened further as the crowd sang the national anthem before the race, creating a particularly special atmosphere. In 2024, Jan Brueghel and stablemate Illinois produced a thrilling finish, battling alongside each other from more than a furlong out. Sean Levey’s Jan Brueghel ultimately edged ahead in the closing stages to win by a neck in one of the most exciting Betfred St Leger finishes in recent years.

Golden Story enters the St Leger as one of the bigger-priced runners, representing Karl Burke with cial rating of 102 Clifford Lee in the saddle. His offi official is considerably below those of Christmas Day, Enceladus and Pierre Bonnard. His recent form leaves him with something to prove against this level of opposition. He could be unpopular in the betting, but represents an interesting long-shot proposition, especially with the trip being uncharted territory. He will need a career best if he is to win.

T: AIDAN O’BRIEN J: R.P. WHELAN

T: ANDREW BALDING J: FALEH BUGHENAIM

Christmas Day is the headline act and arrives with the chance to achieve the historic Derby-St Leger double, last accomplished by Reference Point in 1987. Aidan O’Brien’s colt won the Epsom Derby convincingly, But, subsequent defeats in the Irish Derby and Great Voltigeur have raised doubts. Ronan Whelan renews his successful Derby partnership. Christmas Day is the highest rated in the field and the one to beat in final final Classic of the year. field

Hatteen is arguably the most interesting of the British-trained outsiders. Andrew Balding’s colt has already demonstrated an affinity affinity with Doncaster, having won the St Leger Trial earlier in the season. That course experience could become valuable over the extended trip today.. His official official rating of 96 is modest compared with the favourites but he is open to improvement. Faleh Bughenaim has the ride and there is a chance his mount can spring a surprise..

ENCELADUS T: JOSEPH O’BRIEN J: BILLY LOUGHNANE Enceladus has emerged as arguably the biggest threat to Christmas Day. Joseph O’Brien’s colt is unbeaten in three starts this season and has progressed rapidly through the ranks. His victories in both the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot and Gordon Stakes at Goodwood demonstrate quality and stamina. Billy Loughnane inherits the ride, replacing the injured Dylan Browne McMonagle, and will be hoping to extend his lead in the jockeys’ championship by landing his second Classic of the season.

Rebel Rocker is the outsider of the field but has earned his place in this prestigious field. Jason Watson takes the ride, and the colt’s official rating of 103 suggests he is not out of his depth. His recent form has enough encouragement to suggest he is capable of running respectably. He stayed on in the Epsom Derby, finishing sixth and will be hoping for things to fall the same way again if he is to be there at the business end of the race.

Highwayman has become an intriguing St Leger contender after making dramatic progress recently. Joseph O’Brien’s colt arrives following an impressive Listed victory in the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown. He has a bit to find but will relish the trip. Saffie Osborne takes the ride, bidding to be the first female jockey to win a British Classic.. If continuing his improvement, he could be one of the race’s most dangerous outsiders. His trainer will be looking to land a second success in the St Leger.

AMELIA EARHART T: AIDAN O’BRIEN J: TOM MARQUAND

PIERRE BONNARD T: AIDAN O’BRIEN J: WAYNE LORDAN

Amelia Earhart is the sole filly in the 2026 St Leger field and bids to give Aidan O’Brien 10th victory in the St Leger. She receives a three-pound weight allowance from the colts. Tom Marquand takes the ride, looking for his third St Leger, after winning last year aboard Scandinavia for O’Brien. Stamina is the key question. If Amelia Earhart bounces back to handle the distance, she could have a say in proceedings.

Pierre Bonnard is the third Ballydoyle contender and arguably presents the strongest case against Christmas Day on recent form. He finished second in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, behind Maltese Cross, with Christmas Day in third. Wayne Lordan maintains the partnership. Pierre Bonnard is porven against his rival and will surely be there at the finish.

ELEVEN CONTENDERS. ONE CHANCE TO BECOME A ST LEGER LEGEND .

FROM REVOLUTION TO THE MOON:

HISTORY AT A ST LEGER PACE

History has a curious habit of changing the world while, in the background, some things remain remarkably constant. Few traditions illustrate this better than the Betfred St Leger. First run near Doncaster in 1776, the same year the American colonies declared their independence, the race has continued through revolution, war, social upheaval and extraordinary technological change. Its winners provide a remarkable thread running through almost 250 years of history. When Allabaculia won that first St Leger, the world was very different. Yet the forces that would shape the modern age were already gathering. The French Revolution followed in 1789, and by 1805 Britain was fighting Napoleon at the Battle of Trafalgar, while Staveley was winning at Doncaster. Steam power was beginning to transform Britain when William took the St Leger in 1814, and the following year, as Wellington defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, Filho da Puta became the race’s champion. The nineteenth century brought an extraordinary acceleration in change. Florence Nightingale was born in 1820, the year St Patrick won the St Leger, while Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne in 1837 marked the end of the Georgian era, coinciding with Mango’s victory. Across the Atlantic, the United States was wrestling with the consequences of slavery and civil war. In 1865, the year the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Gladiateur won at Doncaster. Technology was advancing just as rapidly:

Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876, the year Petrarch won the St Leger, bringing the world a little closer together. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the pace of progress was becoming almost breathtaking. The Wright brothers took to the skies in 1903 while Rock Sand won at Town Moor; five years later, as Henry Ford’s Model T began changing transport, Your Majesty won the St Leger. In 1912, Tracery’s victory came against the backdrop of Scott’s ill-fated expedition to the South Pole and the sinking of the Titanic.

Then came the First World War. When Gainsborough won in 1918, Britain was emerging from a conflict that had transformed society, including the historic extension of the vote to women over 30. The years that followed brought television, another World War and a new technological age. Solario won the St Leger in 1925 as John Logie Baird demonstrated the possibilities of television. In 1939, however, history overwhelmed even the sporting calendar: Germany invaded Poland, the Second World War began and the St Leger was not run.

Peace brought an era of remarkable achievement In 1953, Premonition won the St Leger in the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation and Hillary and Tenzing’s ascent of Everest. In 1961, Aurelius won as Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. Ragusa’s victory in 1963 came during the shock of President Kennedy’s assassination, while Sodium’s 1966 success was overshadowed — or perhaps enhanced — by England’s World Cup triumph. By 1969, humanity had reached the Moon, with Intermezzo winning the St Leger in the same remarkable year. Twenty years later, Michelozzo won as the Berlin Wall fell and Europe stood on the threshold of a new era. Through all these extraordinary moments, the St Leger has provided a quiet continuity. The world has repeatedly reinvented itself, but each September the horses still line up, the crowd still waits, and another name is added to a history that began with Allabaculia in 1776. Perhaps that is the real fascination of the St Leger: while everything around it changes, horses still race around Town Moor.

JOCKEY STORY

FRANKIE DETTORI The Betfred St Leger has always meant a lot to me. My first win in the race came in 1995 and it was also my 1,000th winner in Britain. Back when I was starting out, I could never have imagined that I would end up winning the Betfred Leger six times. That makes this year especially exciting, with the race being run for the 250th time. It is the oldest Classic and there is an incredible amount of history and tradition behind it. They say the best horse always wins the Leger, and you certainly need a very good one. As the final leg of the British Triple Crown, it asks for stamina, class and a turn of foot. You can’t win it with a slow horse.

For a jockey, patience is very important. You have to get your horse settled and relaxed because, for most of them, this will be the furthest they have ever raced. The key is to save enough energy so that you still have something left when the race really begins in the closing stages. Leger Day itself is one of the big occasions in the racing calendar and Doncaster always has a great atmosphere. People come for the

74

racing, to have a bet and a drink, and to dress up for the day. Seeing the terraces and grandstands packed is a brilliant sight. You are aware of the noise from the crowd, but once you are riding you have to shut all of that out and focus on the job. The part you can really enjoy is afterwards, walking back from the winning post to the winner’s circle. That is when you can take it all in with the crowd. People go mad! My sixth Betfred Leger gave me every bit as much of a buzz as my first, and each of the six wins was special for a different reason. I was lucky enough to win the race for six different owners and five different trainers, so I got to share those moments with a lot of different people. I’m really looking forward to going back to Doncaster this year for the 250th running and catching up with some familiar faces from the weighing room. I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to ride in the Leger Legends race as planned, but I’ll still be there supporting my fellow jockeys and the Injured Jockeys Fund, and I’m looking forward to being part of such a special Betfred St Leger.

NUMBER OF DECLARED RUNNERS: 6

Betting Forecast: 9/4 Laffan, 5/2 Sab’aan Al Shahania, 11/4 Romeo At, 17/2 Al Sharid, 10/1 Ashj’aa, 14/1 Zayin Sentinel Race Summary: A small but select field and this looks a strong renewal with the first two from the French equivalent renewing their rivalry. On ratings there is very little between the French trained runners and all three have shown a good turn of foot should this get tactical. Sab’aan Al Shahania, Romeo AT and LAFFAN all have something to recommend them. The latter is narrowly preferred, but there shouldn’t be a lot between all three. The locally trained Al Sharid is likely to be best of the rest.
