Welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for Day Two of the Betfred St Leger Festival, Doncaster Cup Day! We’re delighted to have you with us and extend our thanks to our festival sponsors Betfred, and today’s race sponsors, Marston’s Brewery, British EBF, Coopers Marquees, Tanbry Construction, and Danum Homes for their generous support.

We have eight exciting races today, starting with the Group 2 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers Stakes, followed by the prestigious Group 2 Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup Stakes First run in 1766 as the Doncaster Gold Cup, this historic race now honours the late Howard Wright, a respected racing journalist John and Thady Gosden, who’ve won three of the last six renewals, return with last year’s winner Sweet William, bidding to defend his crown.

Join raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, resident tipster Roger Hart, and a Betfred representative in the Parade Ring at around 12:45pm as they guide you through the card and hopefully tip a few winners.

There’s plenty more to enjoy throughout the day, including a pianist performing in the Main Reception at intervals, roaming brass band, and former world ranked #1 professional darts player Peter “One Dart” Manley will be meeting, mingling and challenging racegoers to a nine-dart challenge in the Main Hall.

Over in County, we’re turning up the energy with our brand-new Party Enclosure. Explore the Stable Yard Party Barn, grab a drink at the Leger Tavern, try some tasty street food, and snap a photo at our themed selfie spots. After racing, head to the Champagne Lawn where Café Mambo will deliver Ibiza vibes with a live DJ set Guests in the Grandstand or Family Enclosure can upgrade to join the party.

Our exclusive drinks offer is available every day of the festival, with 50% off all draught drinks, plus £10 off bottles of House Wine, Prosecco, Champagne and Pimms Jugs for the first 60 minutes after gates open - extended to 90 minutes on Saturday. Terms and conditions apply, and we kindly remind all guests to drink responsibly

Looking ahead, we still have a limited number of tickets available in Grandstand and Hospitality for the final two days of the Betfred St Leger Festival, but don’t delay - County and Premier tickets for Leger Saturday are already sold out! Tomorrow features the Betfred St Leger Stakes, the final Classic of the season, while Sunday is our St Leger Family Funday, with lots of free entertainment and activities for all ages

Beyond the festival, we’ve got a host of unmissable events. Join us on Sunday 2nd November for our Fireworks Spooky Spectacular, filled with free family fun and a dazzling fireworks display. And with the festive season fast approaching, plan your perfect night out at one of our popular ‘Rouge’ Christmas LIVE Party Nights – complete with live entertainment, a festive three-course meal, music and Parisian-inspired glamour Or, join us on Friday 19th December as Danny Oakes brings the biggest dancefloor hits, accompanied by a fabulous selection of festive street food.

Tickets for all our upcoming racedays and events are available now at doncaster-racecourse.co.uk

Thank you for being part of the Betfred Doncaster Cup Day 2025 Our team is dedicated to making your day enjoyable, and we truly value your feedback. We hope you have an unforgettable experience with us today.

On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

NIGEL KIRBY

OFFICIAL RACE DAY PHOTOGRAPHER

WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE, AND WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE AT THE RACECOURSE?

My job title is Official Raceday Photographer I capture action shots on race days and take photos as needed by the racecourse.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE DONCASTER RACECOURSE TEAM?

This is my eighth season, so I’ve been here for seven years.

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR WORK BEFORE JOINING DONCASTER RACECOURSE?

I’ve been a professional photographer for 10 years, after leaving the corporate world to start my own business.

HOW MANY ST LEGER FESTIVALS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN? Seven altogether

WHICH DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS YOUR FAVOURITE, AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR YOU?

I’d probably say St. Leger Day because of the unique buzz it brings. I also really enjoy the Leger Legends event at the end; it’s a great spectacle and a nice way to close the festival.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL ST LEGER WEEK LIKE FOR YOU?

It’s four days of being very busy - lots of races, many people, and extra photos to edit and get out. By the end, it’s all a bit of a blur

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ST LEGER MEMORY OR A STORY YOU LOVE TO TELL?

I think the ones that will always be remembered up until now are those during the lockdown, simply because of how surreal everything felt

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?

I’ve got to say the people It’s such a lovely team. Everyone’s got time for everybody, including the boss, and respects what you do. And that means a lot.

WHICH PART OF THE RACECOURSE IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE?

I’d say my little corner in the weighing room. It’s a privilege to be there, and it makes timing easy - you know exactly how long you’ve got once the jockeys head out.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE COLOUR WHEN IT COMES TO JOCKEYS’ SILKS?

I’d probably say a syndicate colour I get on well with a few syndicate teams, so any of their colours winning is a bonus.

WHAT’S YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FILM?

Anything with James Bond, I’m a big fan of James Bond.

TRILLIUM BIG EVS G

FLYING CHILDERS STAKES

AKESSTA L

The Flying Childers Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 sprint that sees the fastest two-year-olds battle it out over a blistering 5 furlongs. First run in 1967 and named after the legendary unbeaten colt Flying Childers, the race boasts a rich heritage and was originally run as a Group 1. Though now Group 2, it remains a highlight of the Doncaster meeting, delivering pure speed, elite competition, and the thrill of witnessing future stars in action.

The race boasts a roll of honour featuring some topclass two-year-olds, including standout sprinters like Green Desert (1985), Fleeting Spirit (2007), and Breeders’ Cup winner Big Evs (2023).

Green Desert is among five winners of the race trained by Sir Michael Stoute, making him the most successful trainer in the race’s history.

Irish-trained horses have found success in this race hard to come by, with only one winner since 1990 - Requinto, who triumphed in 2011 for David Wachman.

Favourites haven’t fared much better recently, with just one obliging in the past decade: Gutaifan in 2015. That same year, Gutaifan also set the race record for the fastest time, completing the 5-furlong sprint in a blistering 58.04 seconds.

Aesterius handed Archie Watson a second win in the Flying Childers last year after he first won it with Solder’s Call in 2018. The Wathnan Racing-owned colt just got the better of Big Mojo after the pair treated racegoers to a thrilling conclusion to one of the standout races of the St Leger Festival.

This is one of few British 2-y-o Group races that Aidan O’Brien rarely targets, but in MISSION CENTRAL and Kansas the Ballydoyle team field two live contenders this time round The former again showed plenty of zip when landing the 6f RoundTower Stakes at the Curragh and, with the prospect of even better to come now back at the minimum trip, he gets the nod. Kansas makes each-way appeal at the forecast prices, but Revival Power and Lady Iman rate the main dangers in that order of preference.

DONCASTER CUP

The Doncaster Cup is the oldest race held at Doncaster Racecourse, first run in 1766. Now a Group 2 contest, it has held this status for the past 21 years and serves as the final leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown—following the Ascot Gold Cup (G1) and Goodwood Cup (G1).

Over the years, this prestigious staying race has been won by some of the sport’s most iconic names, including Gold Cup champions Stradivarius, Estimate, and Double Trigger.

Legendary jockey Joe Mercer claimed an extraordinary eight victories in the Doncaster Cup across four decades - a record that still stands today. In the training ranks, Sir Henry Cecil and Cecil Boyd-Rochfort remain tied as the most successful trainers in the race’s history, each with seven wins.

Age and experience often play a crucial role in this marathon event. Nine of the last eleven winners were aged five or older, with only two three-year-olds - Saddler’s Rock (2011) and Desert Skyline (2017) - claiming victory in the past 21 years. Favourites have a solid record here too, with seven of the last ten coming home in front.

Although he got off to a sluggish start and was rousted along by Rab Havlin in the early stages of last year’s race, the quirky Sweet William shot clear of his rivals including Trueshan to win impressively The Normandie Stud-owned 6-year-old could look to become the first horse since Times Up in 2013 to win back-to-back renewals of the Doncaster Cup
