DON C ASTE R RAC ECOU RS E PRESENTS
A REYT GOOD DAY OUT.
SINCE 1776.
OFFICIAL RACEDAY PROGRAMME £4.00
FRI 11 SEPT 2026
Welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for Day Two of the Betfred St Leger Festival, Betfred Gents Day! We’re thrilled to have you join us and would like to thank our festival sponsors, Betfred, along with today’s race sponsors Marstons, British EBF, Coopers Marquees, Tanbry Construction and Pertemps for their valued support. We have eight fantastic races on the card today, including the Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers Stakes and the Betfred Leger Legends Classified Stakes, the only charity race in Britain dedicated to raising money for the Injured Jockeys Fund, which moves to the Friday of the festival for the first time. This year’s Leger Legends line-up features former jockey JJ Hamblett, also known for his time in boyband Union J, alongside legendary jockey-turned-trainer Gay Kelleway. The highlight of the day is the prestigious Group 2 Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup Stakes, the oldest race run under official rules. First run in 1766 as the Doncaster Gold Cup, this historic race now celebrates the legacy of respected racing journalist Howard Wright. There’s plenty happening away from the track too, with a pianist performing at intervals in the Main Reception, a roaming brass band adding to the atmosphere, Andy’s Man Club in the Exhibition Hall and Eastenders icon John Altman, best known for his role as Nasty Nick Cotton, will be meeting and mingling with racegoers. Strike a pose with your friends and capture a memento of the occasion at the Photo Lightbox in the Main Hall. Plus, a caricaturist will be creating personalised drawings of racegoers throughout the day, the perfect way to remember the occasion and take home a unique souvenir. The County Enclosure is the place to be to experience an electric atmosphere, with the Party Enclosure and Stable Yard Party Barn returning to bring the celebrations to life. This year, you can enjoy a drink from the Red Lion Tavern, inspired by the historic pub where the St Leger Stakes was officially named and refuel at our street food village. As the racing comes to an end, the party continues on the Champagne Lawn, as Ellie Sax brings The White Isle to Doncaster with her incredible Ibiza Anthems Live set.
Don’t forget to take advantage of our exclusive drinks offer. Guests can enjoy 50% off all draught drinks, as well as £10 off bottles of House Wine, Prosecco, Champagne and Pimms Jugs during the first 60 minutes after gates open. Terms and conditions apply, and we ask all guests to enjoy responsibly. If you’re looking ahead to the final two days of the Betfred St Leger Festival, tomorrow marks the 250th anniversary running of the Betfred St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest Classic and an iconic race that has been an integral part of Doncaster’s history for 250 years. We then round off the festival with Sunday Funday, a fantastic family day out packed with free entertainment and activities, including special appearances from Chase and Skye from PAW Patrol at intervals throughout the day. And there’s plenty more to look forward to after the festival. With Christmas just around the corner, you can also start planning your festive celebrations with our brand-new Après Village Party Nights, featuring The Après Ski Main Stage, a delicious three-course meal, Christmas karaoke booths and Alpine curling lanes. Tickets for all our upcoming racedays and events are available now at doncaster-racecourse.co.uk. Thank you for joining us for Betfred Gents Day 2026. Our team is committed to making sure you have a fantastic day, and we truly appreciate your feedback. We hope you have a memorable experience with us today.

Admission
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.
For the Premier and County Enclosure you will require both badge and turnstile ticket to enter the course. Your badge is to be worn on your person, clearly visible throughout the duration of your stay, the badge alone will not permit you entry to the course, you will require the turnstile ticket to gain entry through the turnstile gate.

Our staff aided by the uniformed security will implement the carefully planned evacuation procedures and undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety. It is essential and a requirement that you follow their instructions. If you are able please take your belongings with you and proceed as directed out of the area as quickly and quietly as possible. These are just precautionary notes and we trust the procedures will not be required. However, please remember in the event of a partial or total evacuation of your area to: IF ABLE TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU AND PROCEED AS DIRECTED QUICKLY AND QUIETLY OUT OF THE AREA.
Refusing Admission
The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for doing so. Please retain your turnstile ticket as you will need this should you leave the racecourse and wish to re-enter. Please note on our busiest race days, access to the bars in some enclosures may be restricted to ensure the comfort and safety of all racegoers. Access is on a first come, first served basis (this also applies to free child places with a maximum of 3 children permitted per paying adult). Areas cannot be reserved for anyone in your party who may leave the bar area. Some areas of the racecourse may not be available on our quieter days. Please contact the racecourse prior to booking to check the area you wish to visit will be open.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted 6
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience.

order and distances between horses.
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race. Handicap A race where each horse is allotted
a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above. Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile
mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate. Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing. Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface. Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official
whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.

Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish. Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale
starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump. Sire Father of a horse. Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.

Distance The length of a race. Dam Mother of a horse. Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only. Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger. Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1
January the following year.
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth
of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time). Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing
kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

The annual Leger Legends Race is the only British charity race for former professional jockeys. The race raises money for both the Injured Jockeys Fund and Jack Berry House which provide vital care, rehabilitation and support for injured jockeys. This year’s Leger Legends Race will be sponsored by Betfred. Some of the best former jockeys will be taking part in this year’s contest, including JJ Hamblett of Union J fame, who will be returning to the saddle for the first time after 15 years away from the sport. Previous winners include horse racing industry legends AP McCoy, Joseph O’Brien, Brian Harding and Julie Krone. Gary Bardwell - also known as “The Angry Ant” - secured his second win last year with a thrilling ride
on Shazani, and will return once again this year as he attempts to match Sammy Jo Bell’s three wins and become the first jockey to win back-to-back renewals of the Leger Legends Race. The race is a great opportunity to see retired legends of the sport return to the track once more, to battle it out for glory.

RACE SUMMARY
Sammy Jo Bell has a strong record in this race, with 3 wins since 2019, and ANTHROPOLOGIST might be able to provide her with another success. This 4-y-o has raced mainly on all-weather since joining Michael Herrington but won on turf during his time with Charlie Johnston. This trip could be on the limit of Caragio’s stamina but trainer-jockey Adam Kirby might have had this race in mind for him for a while and he’s second choice ahead of Wield, the mount of recently retired Joe Fanning.

F LY I N G C H I L D E R S STA STA K E S The Flying Childers Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 sprint that sees the fastest two-year-olds battle it out over a blistering five furlongs. First run in 1967 and named after the legendary unbeaten colt Flying Childers, the race has a rich heritage and was originally contested at Group 1 level. Now a Group 2, it remains a highlight of the Doncaster meeting, delivering pure speed, elite competition and the thrill of witnessing future stars in action. The race’s roll of honour features some outstanding two-year-olds, including standout sprinters Green Desert (1985), Fleeting Spirit (2007) and Breeders’ Cup winner Big Evs (2023). Green Desert is one of five winners trained by Sir Michael Stoute, making him the most successful trainer in the race’s history. Success has been hard to come by for Irish-trained runners, with only one winner since 1990: Requinto, who triumphed in 2011 for David Wachman. Favourites have also struggled in recent years, with none winning over the past decade. Gutaifan, the last successful favourite in 2015, also set the race record, completing the five furlongs in an impressive 58.04 seconds.
Aesterius gave Archie Watson his second Flying Childers Stakes victory in 2024, following Solder’s Call’s success in 2018. Owned by Wathnan Racing, the colt narrowly got the better of Big Mojo after the pair produced a thrilling finish in one of the standout races of the St Leger Festival. Last year, Tim Easterby’s Revival Power landed the prize for King Power Racing, giving Easterby his first Flying Childers winner. It was also a first victory in the race for jockey Oisin Murphy, who made all aboard the two-year-old filly.

BEST ODDS GUARANTEED ON ALL RACES AT DONCASTER
D O N C AST ASTER CUP The Doncaster Cup has been at the heart of Doncaster’s racing history for more than 250 years. First staged in 1766, it is the oldest race still ran under official rules and has developed into one of Britain’s most respected staying contests. Now a Group 2, the race forms the final stage of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, following the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup. It provides one last opportunity for the staying stars of the season to test their stamina over a demanding distance. The Doncaster Cup’s illustrious roll of honour includes some of the finest stayers of the modern era, with multiple Ascot Gold Cup winners Stradivarius, Estimate and Double Trigger among those to have lifted the trophy. Its history is equally rich in the saddle, with Joe Mercer establishing an extraordinary record of eight victories between the 1950s and 1980s - a feat which remains unmatched. Sir Henry Cecil and Cecil BoydRochfort share the record for the most wins in this race, with seven Doncaster Cup wins apiece, underlining the race’s long-standing appeal to some of the biggest names in the sport. Punters also have plenty of happy memories of this race in recent years, with seven of the last ten favourites going on to victory.
Sweet William was among them when he produced a memorable performance in 2025, becoming the first horse since Times Up in 2013 to complete back-to-back wins in the race. His latest Doncaster Cup success proved to be one of his final appearances on the racecourse. After finishing third behind Scandinavia in the Ascot Gold Cup earlier this year, Sweet William was retired in July following a joint injury, bringing the curtain down on the career of one of the era’s most consistent staying performers.

QUEENSTOWN looks interesting in receipt of 5lb from dual Group 1 winner Caballo de Mar (who hasn’t fired on his last couple of starts), and he’s taken to give Aidan O’Brien a first success in this race since 2008. Top-end handicapper Ascending appeals as a sporting each-way bet at the forecast prices, in what hardly looks a stellar renewal. 1-2-3: 1.QUEENSTOWN (IRE) 2.CABALLO DE MAR (IRE) 3.ASCENDING (IRE) Trainer Form colours

The rapidly progressive SILVER LAKE did particularly well to score at York last time and the 4-timer looks on the cards for the William Haggas-trained grey.
