You are most welcome to the historic Curragh Racecourse, a most fitting venue for day two of Irish Champions Festival. The Curragh is this afternoon the focus of the racing world for a racecard that uniquely for Ireland includes four Group 1 races.
This is the renowned home of Flat racing, home to all five Irish Classic races. The last of those, the Group 1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger, is among the highlights on today’s eight-race card.
We are also excited about the first Australian-trained runner on the Flat in Ireland, Asfoora as she continues on her European adventures after a second Group 1 success in Britain at York last month. We welcome our Australian visitors and wish them well in the Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes.
The Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes rank among the strongest two-year-old races of the season and will undoubtedly be the leading influencers in determining the champion juveniles of 2025.
All four of our Group 1 races are part of the World Pool, brought back to the Curragh this afternoon through our burgeoning links with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. As was the case in Leopardstown yesterday, the World Pool shines a light on Irish racing and facilitates racing fans and Tote customers from around the world to bet into a single pool with the opportunity for unequalled value
We are all most grateful to our race sponsors over both days of Irish Champions Festival, and to the owners of runners across the weekend. Those owners, their trainers and their jockeys give us all so much to look forward to in each of the eight races this afternoon, and I wish them all the very best of luck.
Today promises so much, and I do hope that you all have a most memorable time

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

APLUSTARD(FR)
Winner of 8 of his 23 career starts and over €1 million in total prizemoney, this top class chaser, trained by Henry de Bromhead, will forever be remembered as the horse who provided jockey Rachael Blackmore with a historic success in the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup in quite devastating fashion – indeed his 15 length victory was the largest since Master Oats triumphed by the same margin in 1995. A Plus Tard had earlier given Rachael her first ever victory at the Cheltenham Festival when romping home in the 2019 Close Brothers Novice Handicap Chase and he showed he had abundant speed as well as stamina when taking the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown (over 2m and 1f) later that year when lowering the colours of Chacun Pour Soi who was a real course and distance specialist at that time. Having chased home stablemate Minella Indo in the 2021 Gold Cup at Cheltenham, A Plus Tard was just imperious when slamming his rivals in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November of that year before being narrowly defeated in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown the following month. This set him up nicely for another crack at the Gold Cup and this time, he gained his revenge on stablemate Minella Indo as he powered clear up the famous hill to justify 3/1 favouritism. Rated 182 after this victory, he was never really quite the same horse after this tremendous performance and was retired in late 2023 but on his day he was simply one of the best steeplechasers of the modern era and a true champion.
Since his retirement from the track A Plus Tard has been excelling in both the show ring and the dressage arena with Emily Kate Robinson. Most notably he was crowned the winner of the ITM Racehorse to Riding Horse Class at the Dublin Horse Show in 2025. Emily Kate worked with A Plus Tard during his racing career through her job as flat work rider at Henry de Bromhead Racing. While at the RDS, A Plus Tard was reunited with his Gold Cup winning jockey, Rachael Blackmore, taking part in the Festina Lente demonstration on the Sunday afternoon.
MOSSTUCKER(IRE)
A thoroughly likeable and ultra consistent sprinter, Moss Tucker progressed through the ranks of decent handicapper to a Group One winning sprinter. He ran 37 times and won 9 races earning over €400,000 in total prize money and was particularly suited by some ease in the ground. Having won a maiden event at Tipperary in August 2021, he landed his first handicap race off a rating of 83 two months later and steadily made his way up through the ranks eventually earning a peak rating of 114 as a six year old. He formed a particularly good alliance with jockey Billy Lee who won 6 races on him during his career including The Waterford Testimonial Stakes (2022) at the Curragh, The Woodlands Stakes at Naas on two occasions (2022 & 2024) and The Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Group 3) at the Curragh in August 2023. However, his biggest and most important success came in the Group One Ali Basti Equiworld Dubai Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh in September 2023 at odds of 16/1 as he sprang a mild surprise to defeat some higher rated rivals in fine style. Moss Tucker was owned by The Charlie Bit Me Syndicate with former Irish Rugby Union International, Donal Spring, the agent of the Syndicate and the horse was named after two famous Irish Rugby players, Moss Keane and Colin Tucker.
Moss Tucker was retired in April this year and Isabelle Carroll took over the reins for this part of his career. His owners decided to go straight to showing, in particular the ITM Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show where he finished 6th. He’s only at the beginning of his retraining journey but is taking everything in his stride and enjoying the process.
NATIVERIVER(IRE)
One of the most popular steeplechasers of the last 10 years, Colin Tizzard’s high class and ultra consistent performer simply didn’t know how to run a bad race winning 14 of his 32 career starts and finishing either second or third on 12 other outings which helped him to earn over £1.1 million in total prizemoney. Successful in 3 novice hurdles in the 2014/2015 NH season, it was only when he was sent over fences later that year, he really came into his own. Successful in two of his first three chase starts he finished a fine third in the Feltham Novice Chase at Kempton on his first try in Grade One company and then ran a cracker to finish a close second to Minella Rocco in the 2016 National Hunt Novice Chase at Cheltenham. Better was to follow the following month when he landed the Betfred Mildmay Novice Chase at the Aintree Festival and later on that year, he was ridden up with the pace throughout when justifying 7/2 favouritism in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury over 3¼ miles in the hands of now regular rider, Richard Johnson. This fine success was followed up with another valuable win in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow where again his unlimited stamina and fine jumping proved too much for his rivals. Native River then gained the first of three wins in the Denman Chase at Newbury in February 2017 before he finished an excellent third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Sizing John. Connections decided to train him a bit differently the following season as he only returned to action in February 2018 when taking a second Denman Chase before recording his greatest victory of his career in the Cheltenham Gold Cup as he powered four lengths clear of the favourite, Might Bite, up the famous hill after the pair went toe to toe from the off. A second bid at the race 12 months later saw him finish in fourth place behind Al Boum Photo having earlier finished placed in both the Betfair Chase at Haydock and the King George VI Chase at Kempton while the 2019/2020 NH season witnessed more success with victory in the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree and a third win in the Denman Chase at Newbury. A third attempt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup followed in 2021 but he was well beaten by the Irish trio of Minella Indo, A Plus Tard and Al Boum Photo and having pulled up in the 2021 Welsh Grand National, he was promptly retired from racing.
Since his retirement from racing Native River has been campaigned on the ROR circuit in the United Kingdom by Emma Vine, qualifying for the Horse of the Year Show and also winning the Tattersalls RoR Amateur Ridden Show Series Final at Hickstead in 2024. This year he competed on Irish soil with Emily McMahon, qualifying for the ITM Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show and finishing in fifth. The duo also won the Tattersalls Ireland Treo Eile Showing Pathway Series Final at Iverk Show in August.
MASTEROFTHESEAS(IRE)
The winner of 9 of his 17 career starts with total earnings of over €2 million, Master Of The Seas was particularly effective on a fast surface and only was thwarted by a nose from winning his final 5 starts. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden for the majority of his career by William Buick, he comfortably landed his first start in a Newmarket maiden in June 2020 before winning the Superlative Stakes (Group 2) over the same course the following month. Sent off the 2/1 joint favourite for the Goffs National Stakes at the Curragh in September he could only manage to finish fourth on that occasion and his 3yo career started with a second place finish in the Meydan Classic in February 2021 which looked disappointing at the time but he showed the benefit of that outing when taking the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April before being touched off by a short head in the English 2000 Guineas by the Jim Bolger trained Poetic Flare. He rounded off his season by finishing third in the Joel Stakes in September before finding the soft ground against him in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October. His only start as a four year old saw him land The Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket in April 2022 before he picked up an injury which kept him off the track for the rest of the year but the decision by connections to race on as a five year old certainly paid dividends as 2023 was the year he really showed what he could do. Opening up with an easy win in the Zabeel Mile at Meydan in February, he subsequently finished third in the Jebel Hatta Stakes over the same course the following month before running below par in the Dubai Turf on World Cup night three weeks later. He returned to winning ways when taking the Summer Mile (Group 2) at Ascot in July before securing his first Grade 1 victory when proving successful in the Woodbine Mile Stakes in Canada in September. Master Of The Seas was then beaten a nose in the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes (Grade 1) at Keeneland in early October before gaining his most important career victory when getting up in the dying strides to win the FanDuel Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita four weeks later defeating the English 1000 Guineas winner, Mawj, in a real thriller. His final career start saw him record another Grade One success when he took the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland in April 2024.
Master of the Seas is enjoying his retirement at Kildangan Stud and is a flagbearer for the Godolphin Lifetime Care Programme. He is shown as part of the standard Foal to Fame tour which is offered as part of Horse Country tours. Also he is shown to school groups when they visit Kildangan.

CURRAGH COMMENT
CARLA RIDGE could be a shade of value on her handicap debut. There was plenty of merit in her placed efforts in Listed and Group 3 company at Naas over the summer The last couple of winners of this sprint have been drawn high and she is housed in stall 22. British raider Tuco Salamanca was a ready winner on soft ground at Yarmouth before following up in good style at Newcastle, so is particularly dangerous. Rain is music to the ears of connections of Go Athletico, who could be coming home better than most. Big Gossey, who won this race two years ago, Sarahmae, stablemates Keke and Heavenly Power and the intriguing handicap debutant Bounty are among a whole host of horses with chances.
WIN: CARLA RIDGE
DANGER: Tuco Salamanca

NICKO’TOOLE RIP
A light went out last Monday and Irish racing lost a dear friend with the passing of Nick O’Toole after a short illness bravely borne Nick was a larger-than-life character and would always put you in good form when you met him.
Originally from Stepaside in Dublin, Nick lived in Naas and enjoyed his racing greatly both here in Ireland and further afield. He was Ireland’s foremost collector of racing memorabilia with a particular passion for both Lester Piggott and Arkle
The team at the Curragh have the fondest memories of working with Nick on the various exhibitions he presented here at the racecourse including tributes to Vincent O’Brien, Michael Kinane and Lester Piggott. This was the very definition of a labour of love and Nick’s attention to detail was something to behold.
Nick will be greatly missed by his many friends in the Irish racing community and our deepest sympathies go to his wife Michelle, brothers and sisters and his wide circle of family and friends.

CURRAGH COMMENT
JOYFUL TIDINGS has the big advantage of winning his maiden on rain-softened ground at Tipperary He went off favourite for that debut run and the runner-up has endorsed the form in no uncertain terms by winning twice since, including in Listed company Karl Burke’s Alparslan was an emphatic winner of a novice stakes at Leicester and holds a Group 1 entry, so his chance is respected. Ger Lyons is having a good season with his juveniles and his representative By The Lake held on by a neck to make a winning start in Naas. Blingy’s Sister was beaten into second at Chester by a horse who has some eyecatching entries, so her chance shouldn’t be underestimated.

LASTYEAR’SRACE
Lake Victoria followed up her Cheveley Park Stakes triumph at Newmarket by securing a second Group 1 victory in the Moyglare
While market attention centred on Bedtime Story, it was Aidan O’Brien’s second string who stole the show Under a determined ride from Wayne Lordan, Lake Victoria quickened smartly to put the race to bed, winning by a comfortable one and a quarter lengths.

GUINEASGLORY
In recent years, this race has proven to be a strong indicator for both the Irish and English 1000 Guineas. Minding was the first notable recent winner, going on to claim victory in the 2016 English 1000 Guineas. She was later joined by another Ballydoyle filly, Love, who triumphed in 2020 Additionally, the last three editions of the Irish 1000 Guineas have been won by Tahirya, Fallen Angel and Lake Victoria who all won this race the previous year
BRITISHSUCCESS BREEDERS’CUP
Despite the strong Irish dominance, a handful of British trainers have successfully brought this race back across the Irish Sea. Henry Cecil’s Chimes Of Freedom claimed a high-profile victory in 1989, followed by winners such as Twafeaj (1991), Sayyedati (1992), Lemon Souffle (1993), and Bianca Nera (1996). More recently, notable British-trained winners include Sky Lantern in 2012 and Fallen Angel, the 2023 champion.
In 2009, the race was added to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, granting the winner an automatic invitation to the prestigious event. Sky Lantern was the first to take up the opportunity but could only finish eighth, despite being sent off as the favourite Since then, several others have made the journey, but it wasn’t until last season that one finally triumphed Lake Victoria stormed to victory as the 7/10 favourite, breaking new ground for the race on American soil.
LEADING TRAINERS?
Since 2000, no trainer has come close to challenging Aidan O’Brien’s dominant hold on this race He has claimed ten victories during that time, starting with Sequoyah in 2000
Before O’Brien’s era of dominance, wins were more evenly spread among various yards, with Jim Bolger, John Oxx, and Vincent O’Brien each securing two wins by the turn of the century Bolger has since added a third success with Saoirse Abu in 2007, though he still trails O’Brien by seven wins.
O’Brien’s sons, Donnacha and Joseph, have each registered a single win, but they have some way to go if they hope to match their father’s formidable record.
This year, Aidan O’Brien is strongly represented once again, saddling Beautify, Composing and Precise
TOPOWNERS
Given Ballydoyle’s dominance in the race, it comes as no surprise that Coolmore stands as the leading owner since 2000 Over that period, they have celebrated 11 victories, including notable winners such as Sequoyah (2000), Necklace (2003), Rumplestiltskin (2005), Again (2008), Misty for Me (2010), Maybe (2011), Minding (2015), Happily (2017), Love (2019), and Shale (2020) and Lake Victoria (2024)
LEADINGRIDER?
WHOARETHE SPONSORS?
Only one jockey has managed to ride four winners in this race - the legendary Christy Roche His remarkable run came within a six-year span, starting with Tender Camilla in 1974 and culminating with Arctique Royale in 1980 Despite the passage of time and his retirement from the saddle, no other jockey has yet matched his tally However, Ryan Moore currently sits on two wins.
Moyglare Stud was founded in 1962 by Walter Haefner, a passionate and accomplished horseman. Remarkably, in 1963, at the age of 53, he was crowned Fegentri Champion Amateur. Beyond his success in the saddle, Haefner was a dedicated supporter of Irish racing, contributing significantly through his involvement with The Turf Club, RACE, and the Irish Equine Centre In 1973, he established the Moyglare Stud Stakes a race that now holds one of the longest continuous sponsorships in global racing. His legacy continues through his daughter, Eva Maria, who proudly upholds the family’s tradition of breeding and racing top-class thoroughbreds.

Slower ground shouldn’t inconvenience her as her dam was very proficient in testing conditions. Venetian Sun is the highest rated on 113 after four wins culminating in a Group 1 at Deauville She is a massive player and her trainer won this race two years ago, but she is trying a new trip Composing’s stablemate Beautify took a notable scalp when victorious in a Group 2 over 6f here and has plenty of upside

Seventh in the race in 2023, Bradsell turned a new page in his career to excel in last year’s competitive renewal of The Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes.
Nicely drawn in stall 14, the son of Tasleet had a perfect, trouble free passage and quickened up like a flash to frank his Nunthorpe form with the runner-up again, Believing.

HISTORYOFTHERACE?
The Flying Five Stakes, now sponsored by Bar One Racing, was established in 1985 and was formerly held at Phoenix Park at Listed level, for two-year-olds and upwards and was also ran at Leopardstown. Rising through the ranks, the race was moved to the Curragh in 2002 and earned its Group 1 status only 7 years ago in 2018 - becoming a key target in the sprinting division.
DUALWINNERS? KEYTRENDS
The legendary Benbaun is the most successful horse in the race, winning three consecutive renewals between 2005 and 2007. Prior to that, Flowing, Tropical and Tedburrow both produced back-to-back victories in the 90’s. In the modern era, there has yet to be another dual-winner and that doesn’t look set to change this year with last year’s winner Bradsell now retired to stud.
• Horses trained in Britain have won the Flying Five three times in the last five years and four in the last seven.
• Four of the last eight winners were returned as favourite for the race
• Six of the last 10 winners were returned at 5/1 or shorter
• Seven of the last nine winners were drawn in stall 8 or lower,
LEADING CONNECTIONS?
This race has consistently been fiercely competitive, making Dermot Weld’s achievement of five victories particularly impressive. He claimed the first-ever edition with Committed in 1985 and followed it up with a remarkable four wins between 1991 and 1994. In more recent years, Aidan O’Brien has taken the lead with three victories, the most recent being Fairyland in 2019.
Michael Kinane has also etched his name into the history books with a record six wins. Four of those came in partnership with Dermot Weld, while he also triumphed aboard Ishiguru and Ringmoor Down in the early 2000s. Lately, Ryan Moore has been the jockey to watch but due to injury, it could be worth looking at Christophe Soumillon’s ride on Whistlejacket.
WINANDYOU’REIN
Along with the Moyglare Stud Stakes, this race is part of the ‘Breeders Cup Win and You’re In’. A successes in this race gains the winner an entry into the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint worth a $1million.
There have been numerous horses to attempt to conquer America but only Glass Slippers has completed the double Trained by Kevin Ryan, Glass Slippers powered home the Del Mar straight under Tom Eaves to beat the American speedsters in their own back yard.
MOSTSUCCESSFUL?
One of the best winners of the race was Caravaggio who landed the contest as a three year old.
In 2022, Highfield Princess became the domestic sprinting Queen. She has an outstanding résumé, landing the Prix Maurice De Gheest, Nunthorpe and Flying Five in a phenomenal career.
Others to note include Benbaun, Reverence, Sole Power and Glass Slippers.

CURRAGH COMMENT
BUCANERO FUERTE is in terrific form and could bring up his hat-trick. His seasonal reappearance saw him take a Listed race at Naas in May and he then made all in a Group 3 over 6f at this venue in August. He is already a winner at the highest level at the Curragh and is four from six here, including on attritional ground over this trip on debut. Australian representative Asfoora has been garnering plenty of headlines since winning the Nunthorpe at York last month. She brings a lot of class to this sprint and is likely to be right there at the business end. Two Stars is up in grade, but is going the right way and conditions will suit.

The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes delivered one of the biggest upsets of the Irish Champions Festival, as Scorthy Champ turned the tables on hot favourite Henri Matisse, reversing their form from the Group 2 Futurity Stakes over the same course and distance just three weeks earlier
Slow out of the stalls, just as he had been on his debut win, Dylan Browne McMonagle settled Scorthy Champ at the rear of the field, allowing him

to switch off early. With Seagulls Eleven setting the early fractions, it was always clear that the eventual winner and runner-up were travelling the best.
Making smooth progress down the far side, Joseph O’Brien’s colt surged through the pack, showing a relentless finishing kick to overhaul Henri Matisse and score by just under a length - delivering a memorable moment for connections.
WHYISITANIMPORTANTRACE?
Run over a distance of seven furlongs, this race regularly draws the top juvenile talent from both Ireland and Great Britain. As a result, it has become a reliable indicator for spotting future 2000 Guineas winners, with many participants going on to excel over longer trips as they mature Notable recent examples include Churchill, Gleneagles, Dawn Approach, and George Washington.
HISTORYOFTHERACE MOSTIMPRESSIVE PERFFROMANCE?
First established in 1849, the race was originally known as the National Produce Stakes before later becoming the National Stakes. The inaugural running, held over 170 years ago, was won by a horse named Chatterbox.
Initially classified as a Group 2 race, the National Stakes was elevated to Group 1 status in 1985. It became part of the prestigious Irish Champions Weekend fixture in 2014.
In a remarkable performance, Godolphin’s exceptional colt Pinatubo demolished his rivals by an astonishing nine lengths in the 2019 renewal. He travelled effortlessly throughout the race and unleashed a devastating turn of foot to leave a field of high-class juveniles trailing in his wake.
LEADING JOCKEYS
The late Lester Piggott left an indelible mark on the National Stakes, winning the race four times between Cellini in 1973 and Fatherland in 1992. That impressive tally was later matched by another riding legend, Michael Kinane, who also recorded four victories during his illustrious 34-year career - his most memorable coming aboard the brilliant Hawk Wing.
Among the current jockeys, William Buick leads the way with three wins in the famous Godolphin blue Close behind are Ryan Moore and Declan McDonogh, both with two victories apiece In this year’s renewal, Buick will look to add another to his tally aboard the unbeaten Saba Desert.
HOWDOBRITISH RUNNERSFARE?
Despite Aidan O’Brien’s dominance in recent decades, British-trained runners have maintained a respectable record in the National Stakes. Barry Hills struck with Tap On Wood in 1978, followed eight years later by Lockton’s victory in 1986. In more recent times, Godolphin enjoyed a golden spell, capturing the race with Quorto in 2018, the brilliant Pinatubo in 2019, and Native Trail in 2021 - bringing their short but impactful run to a close
LEADINGTRAINERS?
Vincent O’Brien holds a long-standing record in the National Stakes, having saddled an incredible 15 winners - a benchmark that has stood for decades. His dominance began with Sir Ivor in 1967 and included a remarkable hat-trick of successes from 1971 to 1973. His final triumphs came with El Prado in 1991 and Fatherland in 1992, just before his retirement from racing in 1994.
However, that historic record is now under serious threat from Aidan O’Brien and the modern-day Coolmore operation. Over the past 27 years, Aidan has trained 12 National Stakes winners - an extraordinary achievement in its own right. His roll of honour includes generational talents such as Mastercraftsman, Gleneagles, and Churchill. In this year’s renewal, he looks to the hot-favourite Gstaad who should bounce back on home soil.
WHOARETHE SPONSORS?
Goffs is a leading bloodstock auction house, conducting horse sales throughout the year in both Ireland and the UK. Among its prestigious events is a boutique sale held at Kensington Palace ahead of Royal Ascot. Across all its sales, Goffs offers nearly 10,000 horses annually.
NATIONALSTAKES(GROUP1)
HONOURINGATRUELEGEND OFTHETURF
If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does.
From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard.
However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and Influential sons of his including Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor.
The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs.
At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982.
Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983).
Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. Hopefully today’s renewal will live up to the high standard that Vincent helped to set in the race during the course of his remarkable career.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Charlie Appleby has a really good National Stakes record and SABA DESERT can give him a fourth success in this Group 1 contest. The Dubawi colt still looked a touch green when winning the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket back in July, but also showed a smart turn of foot to quicken up and run out an impressive winner There looks to be scope for plenty more improvement from him. Gstaad was turned over in France last time, but was beaten by a good filly in Venetian Sun and Aidan O’Brien expects him to relish the step up to 7f The other English raider Zavateri brings an unbeaten record into the race and also commands respect.
WIN: SABA DESERT
RACESPONSOR
THANKYOU
DANGER: Gstaad
The Curragh would like to acknowledge the support of stable staff today with just under €6,000 presented to grooms across our race programme including generous presentations to grooms in charge of horses judged to be best turned. We would also like to thank Moyglare Stud for their ongoing sponsorship of the Stable Staff Canteen. Their support provides a complimentary meal to all stable staff working today.
Henry Beeby, Goffs Group Chief Executive, and Eimear Mulhern, Goffs Chairman, will present trophies to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and €500 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out. Mary, Skye, Isla and Ella McClory will present the Vincent O’Brien Perpetual Trophy to the winning owner.
Proud Sponsor of The KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes
With Moyglare Stud sponsoring two races on the Sunday of Irish Champions Weekend, they had every reason to celebrate as their star stayer, Kyprios, secured a second victory in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger.
Sent off a strong 2/5 favourite, Kyprios lived up to expectations with another commanding performance, extending his unbeaten streak for the season to five wins. He held off Vauban

Known for his relentless determination to win, Kyprios earned widespread admiration throughout his career Sadly, injury has led to his retirement this season, but not before he recorded an impressive 17 wins from 21 startsa remarkable legacy for the horse of a lifetime
WHYISITANIMPORTANTRACE?
Unlike its British counterpart, this race gives an opportunity for the classic generation to be pitted against their older rivals. Since 2014, there have been 3 three-year-olds to win the race, the latest being Search For A Song back in 2019 Today, Amiloc is the sole representative for this age group.
DUALWINNERS CLOSEFINISHES
Since the Comer Group International Irish St Leger became an open-age race in 1983, it has seen multiple repeat winners. The most successful among them is Vinnie Roe, who claimed victory on four consecutive occasions from 2001 to 2004. Vintage Crop became the first dual winner of the race, securing back-to-back victories in 1993 and 1994. He has since been followed by other notable multiple winners, including Kayf Tara, Order of St George, Search For A Song and most recently Kyprios.
The closest finish in the race’s history occurred in 2011, when Duncan and Jukebox Jury could not be separated by the judge, resulting in a dead heat. The pair emerged clear at the top of the straight and engaged in what was arguably the most fiercely contested battle the race has ever seen. It appeared that Jukebox Jury had done just enough to prevail, but a late surge from Duncan ensured they crossed the line together
LEADING TRAINERS?
Vincent O’Brien and Dermot Weld share the distinction of being the most successful trainers in the history of this race, each boasting nine victories. Vincent O’Brien’s final win came in 1988 with Dark Lomond, capping off a remarkable career Dermot Weld, meanwhile, trained the race’s most successful horse, Vinnie Roe, as well as two other dual winners: Vintage Crop and Search For A Song. Aidan O’Brien is close behind with seven wins to his name, the latest coming as Kyprios secured a second victory in the race With a strong team entered this year, can Aidan close the gap and join the elite force of the past?
ONTHECLOCK
Over the past 20 renewals, the fastest winning time was recorded in 2014 by Brown Panther, who completed the race in 2:57.15. Trained by Tom Dascombe and ridden by Richard Kingscote, the horse set the quickest time of the period. In contrast, the slowest winning time came in 2009, when Alandi, ridden by Mick Kinane, crossed the finish line in 3:14.82.
LEADINGRIDER?
WHOARETHE SPONSORS?
Morny Wing remains the benchmark for all jockeys aspiring to become the leading rider in the race’s history His first victory was recorded over a century ago, yet no one has managed to surpass his remarkable tally of seven wins.
Pat Smullen and Mick Kinane both came close, each securing four victories. Among the current generation, Ryan Moore leads the way with three wins to his name Of those riding in today’s field, it could be worth following David Egan who landed the prize in 2023.

CURRAGH COMMENT
AL RIFFA was impressive when stepping up to this trip for the first time in the Curragh Cup and the classy middledistance performer can strike again at the top level. He pulled clear in fine style over C&D in July and softer ground now wouldn’t be an issue A real test of stamina would suit Illinois and he’s the obvious danger The Galileo colt was runner-up in the St Leger at Doncaster last season and filled the same position in the Gold Cup this year The progressive Amiloc is another who has to come into calculations. The unbeaten Postponed gelding makes his first start since winning the Group 2 King Edward VII at Royal Ascot.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

RED LETTER comes here on a roll and can take another step up the ladder The Frankel filly has bagged Listed and Group 3 prizes on her last two starts and was good when winning over nine furlongs here on her latest outing. Going up another furlong now should be no problem and she is versatile ground-wise One Look is an obvious danger and has already bagged two Group 3 races here this term. The consistent Snellen was a game winner at Leopardstown latest and should be in the mix again.

CURRAGH COMMENT
English raider CROWN OF OAKS is hard to ignore running under a penalty in this. The Wootton Bassett gelding was a very easy winner at Ascot last weekend with cut in the ground and there should be more to come. Sujet won a big pot here in June and remains relatively unexposed. He comes here on the back of a win at Killarney and commands respect. Glen To Glen was beaten at a short price over course and distance on his latest outing in July, but is tried in blinkers now WIN: CROWN OF OAKS
DANGER: Sujet
