WELCOME
Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse A very warm welcome to everyone joining us at Chepstow Racecourse for an exciting afternoon of midweek jump racing. Following a fantastic start to the National Hunt season with the DragonBet Welsh Racing Festival, we are delighted to welcome the return of chase racing to Chepstow after the exceptionally dry conditions meant that our Festival programme was restricted to hurdles and bumpers. With eight competitive races on today’s card, we look forward to another enjoyable afternoon of racing. We are delighted to welcome Lord’s Taverners, a charity dedicated to empowering young people through cricket. Their work helps provide opportunities for young people with disabilities and those facing socioeconomic disadvantage to enjoy the sport free of charge. We encourage racegoers to support this fantastic cause. As part of Chepstow Racecourse’s centenary celebrations, we are particularly pleased to welcome the return of the Lysaght Cup. It honours William Royce ‘WR’ Lysaght and his son Desmond, both of whom were long-serving directors and chairmen of the racecourse during its first half-century. WR’s great-grandsons Malcolm Churchill and Sir Charles Denny along with their cousin Cornelius Lysaght have re-instated this race in their honour. Our sincere thanks go to today’s race sponsors, LSL Racing, the supporters of the Lysaght Cup, DragonBet, Floyds Turfcare and Dunravan, for their generous support. We greatly value their contribution and are delighted to have them involved in today’s meeting. As always, I would also like to extend my thanks to the owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and everyone working behind the scenes. Your dedication and continued support are invaluable to the success of racing here at Chepstow. Finally, thank you to everyone joining us today. We hope you enjoy a wonderful afternoon of racing and look forward to welcoming you back to Chepstow Racecourse again soon. Upcoming Feature Events Christmas Party Raceday – Saturday 5 December Get into the festive spirit with an exciting afternoon of jump racing and seasonal entertainment. With a lively Christmas atmosphere, festive food and drink, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate with friends, family or colleagues, it’s the perfect way to start the festive season at Chepstow. Coral Welsh Grand National – Monday 28 December Join us for the biggest raceday of the year in Wales, featuring the historic Coral Welsh Grand National, Wales’ most prestigious race and one of the great tests of stamina in the National Hunt calendar. Expect an unforgettable afternoon of thrilling jump racing and a fantastic festive atmosphere, taking place on its brandnew date for 2026, Bank Holiday Monday 28 December.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE LYSAGHT CUP Today sees the re-birth of a race staged at Chepstow on and off since the course’s very earliest days 100 years ago, now the Lysaght Cup. It honours William Royce – W.R. – Lysaght and his son Desmond, both of whom were giants of the Chepstow boardroom as directors and chairmen, playing pivotal roles in guiding the course through uncertain times when finances were tight. Previously, there have been Lysaghttitled chases and flat handicaps, but none W.R. Lysaght for a number of years; however, to mark Chepstow’s centenary, two of W.R.’s greatgrandsons, Malcolm Churchill and Sir Charles Denny, and a cousin, Cornelius Lysaght, are sponsoring this afternoon’s feature. The Lysaghts of the 1920s, who lived just across the river, at Castleford, were captains of industry, thanks to a highly-successful, international steel-making network, John Lysaght and Company. Whether it be from sites down the road in Newport – where thousands of local people were employed – in Wolverhampton, or in Australia and elsewhere globally, the Lysaght name and its Orb trademark became synonymous with steel industry excellence. Away from business, family members were passionate racehorse owners and breeders, so when plans emerged to create a new course they were eager exponents, and W.R. filled a main-board vacancy in mid-1926, just as costs were spiralling alarmingly. Happily, the new director’s business acumen – and perhaps his deep pockets – came to the rescue, and as Pat Lucas’ definitive Fifty Years of Racing at Chepstow history put it, he “encountered the monetary difficulties… [and]…was fortunately placed to withstand the onslaught”. Things have not, of course, always gone entirely smoothly since then, or indeed since W.R. died in 1945 or Desmond in 1970.
Desmond Lysaght
But unquestionably father and son would be immensely proud of the manner in which the foundations that they helped to lay still hold firm today as Chepstow, with its extensive portfolio of jumping and flat racing fixtures, continues – with an appropriately steely resolve – to serve the ever-burgeoning racing community in South Wales, and well beyond.
