Page 1

Welcome to Day 2 of Chepstow’s Unibet Jump Season Opener, a weekend steeped in jump racing history, celebrating the start of another thrilling winter national hunt campaign across the UK.

We are delighted to see such a well-supported card and we are extremely grateful to the owners and trainers who have supported us. We look forward to watching your horses run over the coming two days.

With £400,000 of prize money on offer over the two days, we have some thrilling races to look forward to, headlined today by the Wasdell Group Silver Trophy and the Tom Malone Bloodstock Novices’ Listed Chase, with a competitive field heading to post for both races.

Fresh for this year’s two day meeting is an Oktoberfest theme, so do head over to the Bierfest marquee located on the back lawn for some Bavarian music courtesy of the Bavarian Strollers throughout the day and after racing, as well as a DJ playing throughout the day. You’ll also find a variety of German beer, Bratwursts and a wide range of food and drink for you to enjoy, available across the racecourse throughout the day.

A final thanks must go to our sponsors today. Firstly our headline sponsors Unibet, who have shown unwavering support for the meeting for several years now We thank you Ed Nicholson and team for your support of this wonderful fixture Unibet are joined as sponsors by Champion Equestrian, Weatherby’s, Tom Malone Bloodstock, Garth Broom and finally the Wasdell Group for their sponsorship of the Silver Trophy today.

We really appreciate your support and thank you for joining us for our Unibet Jump Season Opener weekend. We hope you enjoy all of the action on and off the track and I look forward to seeing you return to us soon.

Placing a Bet

The Racecourse Betting shop is situated in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure. The bookmakers are located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand.

The Weighing Room

This is located opposite the Winning Post and all jockeys weigh out here before each race. Their weight, including their saddle, should correspond with the weight shown in today’s racecard for their particular horse in that particular race. Once the race is finished, the jockeys will weigh in and their weight must be the same as when they started. On racedays, four stewards ensure each race is run according to Jockey Club rules and regulations.

Please see the assembly points clearly marked on the map.

After each race, the first four placed horses are led into the Winners Enclosure where they are unsaddled and the jockeys take the saddle and weigh in. There are presentations by race sponsors to the connections of the winning on the winner’s podium.

GOLDEN ERA FOR WELSH JUMP JOCKEYS

In recent years a band of Welsh jockeys has become a significant force in jump racing. Three of them finished in the nationwide top ten last season, Sean Bowen leading the way with 157 winners.

In the first half of the 2010s the success of Welsh trainers such as Peter Bowen, Evan Williams and Tim Vaughan sparked the beginning of the new wave of young Welsh jockeys. Seventeen-year-old Sean Bowen rode 51 winners in 2014/15, his first full season, and since then a host of other Welsh riders have graduated from the worlds of pony racing and point-to-pointing to be successful jump jockeys.

Bowen would have been champion National Hunt jockey last season but for a fall on Boxing Day that kept him sidelined for six weeks. He is currently vying with former champion Harry Skelton for the lead in this season’s title race. In third place is Sean’s brother James, who when sixteen became the youngest ever jockey to ride the winner of the 2017 Welsh Grand National. James broke Sean’s record as the youngest champion conditional and is now second jockey in Nicky Henderson’s yard.

In the last National Hunt season Ben Jones rode the Harry Redknapp-owned Shakem Up’arry to win at the Cheltenham Festival. On the same day Lorcan Williams rode Golden Ace to land the Dawn Run Mares’ Hurdle. Elsewhere, Connor Brace won six races on his grandfather David’s handicapper Classic Concorde and Richard Patrick won the Welsh Champion Hurdle winner Nemean Lion.

Not forgetting Jack Tudor rode Christian Williams’ Potters Corner to victory in the 2019 Welsh National, and Kitty’s Light to win an unprecedented hat-trick of long-distance chases (the Eider, Scottish National and Bet365 Gold Cup) in the spring of 2023 and amateur jockey David Prichard won the 2022 Welsh Grand National on The Two Amigos.

Next off the conveyor belt of talent may be Tim Vaughan’s son Ed, who rode nearly a hundred pony race winners and in his first season point-to-pointing season won 33 races to take the national champion novice rider title.

This extent of Welsh strength in the saddle has not been seen since the first half of the 20th century, when brothers Ivor, Jack and Owen Anthony won three Grand Nationals and three jockeys’ championships between them. It’s been over 50 years since Bob Davies was the last Welshman to be champion jockey. Hopefully the next one will be crowned at the end of this season.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no meansout of thereckoningbut at leastone or twohold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikelytowin butnot totallywithout hope HIIII Canbegiven little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

City of London makes plenty of appeal on paper being a half-brother to smart hurdler Nemean Lion, while Rakki is in the right hands to do well in this sphere.

THE SILVER TROPHY

History of the Wasdell Group Silver Trophy

The Wasdell Group Silver Trophy, a two and a half mile handicap hurdle, was first run in 1989 and has been sponsored in recent years by the Wasdell Group.

One of its first winners was the best; in 1990 Bradbury Star was on his way to becoming a top class all-rounder, combining classiness, versatility and resilience. He ran 58 times, winning 18 at all distances from two to three miles. Amazingly, he won eight times at Cheltenham.

Most of Silver Trophy runners go on to thrive at longer distances and the 2007 winner was a prime example; that was Don’t Push It, who three years later gave A P McCoy his only winning ride in the Grand National.

Horses placed in the Silver Trophy have also been worth following in staying chases.

Fourth in 2011 was The Giant Bolster, who would finish second, third and fourth in three Cheltenham Gold Cups. Vieux Lion Rouge, third in 2014, won 13 times in all and became a real Aintree specialist. In fourth that year was Regal Encore, successful six times later including four at Ascot.

Court Minstrel was a 40/1 success for South Wales trainer Evan Williams in 2015, and he became the only dual winner of the race when scoring again two years later The form of the latter race turned out to be excellent. Six of the first eight home won again before long.

Tea Clipper took the 2020 Silver Trophy in convincing style, finishing six lengths ahead of the previous year’s winner Flash The Steel. He was placed at both of the next two years’ Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. In October 2021 returned to Chepstow to take the valuable Robert Mottram Trophy.

The Silver Trophy form of 2021 (won by the Philip Hobbs trained Orbys Legend) continues to hold good; five of the first eight in the latest running won races within three months.

The ۲۰۲۳ running went to Paul Nicholls for the sixth time in twelve years with Captain Teague under Harry Cobden Harry solidified his Champion Jockey campaign later in the season at Chepstow. Captain Teague continued on to Newbury in December ۲۰۲۳ to win the Challow Novices’ Grade ۱ Hurdle. The race continues to showcase the talent of the future stars in their Novice careers, we hope ۲۰۲٤ will follow the trend!

INTO THE PARK and Lowry’s Bar, both lightly-raced types from the Hobbs & White yard, are appealing candidates for what is a typically competitive renewal of this valuable handicap Marginal preference is for the former, who was a progressive novice last season and he should have more to offer. Jipcot and Tune In A Box are also open to improvement, while the Paul Nicholls-trained duo Afadil and Irish Hill merit respect, too.

NATIVE RIVER

OWNER:

His dam Native Mo was bought by a dairy farmer in Norther Ireland called Fred Mackey in 1997. She had an accident at home and was unable to race so he bred from her She was covered by Indian River, (who won a Grade 3 chase at Auteuil for Guillaume Macaire) and they produced a chestnut foal on 4th May 2010 He was sold in November of that year as a foal by Mackey at the Tattersalls Ireland November Sale, with John Dineen the purchaser at €6,000

He made his point-to-point debut for Denis Ahern at Dromahane in March 2014 and was bought privately by Tom Malone on the back of an eye-catching run when brought down at the final fence whilst staying on strongly under a patient ride.

Tom invited Garth and Anne Broome to take a look at him with a view to buying even though they were not too keen beforehand given his chestnut colour However, once they had seen him trot-up and display his catlike action and lovely temperament, let it sink in over a cup of tea they decided to buy him within half an hour

They sent him to be trained by Colin Tizzard and he made his English debut in a bumper at Newton Abbot in October 2014 where he was a one-pace third and a little disappointing however three weeks later he won a maiden hurdle over 2& 3/4 miles at Stratford and followed up in ‘The French Furze’ at Newcastle Stepped up into Grade 1 company for the first time in the Challow he was last of six but it was a personal best so far. Unfortunately, he then fell at Cheltenham in a Grade 2 hurdle when going well before dropping right back in trip and winning the Listed Novice Hurdle at Exeter over 2 miles. He finished his season by finishing midfield in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival.

He made his chasing debut at the Chepstow opening meeting in October 2015 where he was third before he went to Exeter and won. His next five races that season were in Graded company, a win at Newbury, third in the Kauto Star and Towton before a staying-on strongly second in The National Hunt Chase over 4 miles and then a first Grade 1 win at Aintree where Richard Johnson partnered him for the first time

After a prep-run in the Yorkshire hurdle October 2016 he went straight to Newbury to win the Hennessy and then to Chepstow for The Welsh National winning off top weight. He then took in the Denman at Newbury before finishing 3 lengths third in the 2017 Gold Cup

He was then given a good break until February 2018 and his stall was laid out for the Gold Cup He prepped by taking The Denman again before attempting to make-all in The Gold Cup to win by 4 lengths. He ran only three times in the 18/19 season placing in the Betfair Chase, The King George and the Gold Cup

In 19/20 he won The Many Clouds Chase at Aintree and The Denman at Newbury again for the third time (where he remained unbeaten over fences from 5 runs). He missed that year’s Gold Cup due to a niggling injury and after a comeback run won The Cotswold Chase at Sandown in February 21 before another fourth place in The Gold Cup and a third in the Grade 1 at Aintree

In December 2021 he had his final run at Chepstow in The Welsh National after which retired after having won 14 of his 32 starts finishing in the first four on 28 occasions and earning over £1.1million in prizemoney.

In all he won 11 times over fences for 4 different jockeys earned a career best official rating of 176.

He now has an active life residing at Tom Malone’s farm only a few miles away from his owners Garth and Anne Broome

Back in July, Native teamed up with Champion Jockey, Harry Cobden, to win a jockeys show jumping event at Bicton in aid of Injured Jockeys fund. Later that year he qualified for Horse Of The Year Show twice, being placed in the amateur Search For A Star riding horse at Stoneleigh Park then winning the SEIB ‘Racehorse to Riding Horse’ class at Burghley Horse Trials with Jazmin Hosgood.
