OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for our Abba Race Night.

A big thank you to our sponsors The ReeceR Group, DragonBet, Sue Maine, Pickwick Bookmakers and the EBF I hope they have an enjoyable evening with us.

The post racing entertainment tonight is from Waterloo, the excellent Abba tribute act – they will be on stage around 9.15pm.

It is great to see jockey David Probert riding with us in every race this evening. He was kicked by a horse in the paddock at Windsor a few weeks ago but fortunately escaped without serious injury. David was Flat Jockey of the Year at the 2022 ROA Welsh Horse Racing Awards

Sean Bowen was Jump Jockey of the Year at last year’s awards and his career continues to go from strength to strength. He currently leads the Jump Jockeys’ Championship with 23 winners

it is obviously early days but we wish him the best of luck against the challenge of Brian Hughes and Harry Cobden.

We have an exceptionally busy summer ahead here at Chepstow Racecourse.

On Ladies Evening on Friday 14th July the post racing entertainment is supplied by The Dreamboys. The ever popular Caribbean Race Night is on Friday 28th July. For both of these fixtures, we are offering significant discounts for group bookings, please see the website for details.

We also host our first Racing League fixture on Thursday 10th August. In addition, we have three major concerts at the start of July with Lionel Richie, Lewis Capaldi and George Ezra – ticket details are available from Ticketmaster

I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk).

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses

Sadly my wonderful husband Mike died from a brain tumour in July 2016, aged just 60 years old.

We moved to the Chepstow area for an “escape to the country” in lieu of retirement to enjoy gardening and our horses. Finding our dream home with land, stables and a large garden just gave us the “dream” and we moved in November 2012.

After both getting a cancer diagnosis within 3 days of each other in February 2015, our dream was shattered.

I am still here to keep his memory alive but sadly Mike lost his fight in July 2016. He loved his garden - especially owning his first sit on mower. He took early retirement to enjoy this beautiful home we had found.

Mike and I have been involved with racehorse ownership for 20 years –with small syndicates as well as ownership. Our horse First Mohican (retired), who we had a share of took us to Royal Ascot –which was an amazing day.

My family – a daughter and son, as well as their partners are continuing to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research.

If you wish to contribute to Brain Tumour Research please visit michael-maine.muchloved.com

I am hoping this race, each year will allow us all to remember such a wonderful, kind and generous man.

Thank you

LONGEST TRAVELLER: DAME LAURA KNIGHT trained by I Williams, Alvechurch, 82 miles.

FACT OR FABLE arrives in good order and should be suited by the return to this trip, so he makes most appeal in a race where the majority have something to prove. Dame Laura Knight is still relatively unexposed and could do better for cheekpieces, so she’s regarded as the main danger ahead of Deacs Delight.
