Page 1

On behalf of everyone at Brighton racecourse, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to tonights meeting.

We are delighted to once again welcome Fairplay exchange as todays race sponsors, thank you to Billy and the team.

Race sponsorship is an excellent way to enhance your visit and there are various options available, please contact a member of the racing team on 01273 603580 if you would like to find out more.

In my last notes I mentioned our fantastic head groundsman Richard Langley, running an ultra marathon (100 miles) to raise awareness around bowel cancer and living with a stoma. I am delighted to say that Richard achieved a time of just over 29 hours for this mammoth challenge.

If you would like to contribute to this fantastic charity please use the link below: https://www.justgiving.com/page/richard-langley-6 our next meeting is on the 30th of June, with gates open at 12.40 and the first race at 14.40.

I hope you enjoy your day with us.

Horse & Jockey Welfare at Brighton

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a

dedicated and experienced team of highlyqualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.brighton-racecourse.co.uk

KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

WEIGHTWATCHER: LUNARIO won off a handicap mark of 78, his rating is now down 9lb to 69.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: STATE OF MADNESS trained by D M Loughnane, Kidderminster, 178 miles.

A small field but there looks enough pace on paper for MIDDLETON VIEW, who was doing all his best work late when fourth over this trip at Yarmouth last time and may land the spoils. Tea Sea is another who’ll benefit from a good gallop to aim at and he’s next best in a trappy handicap.
