Brighton Racecard - Friday 8th August

Page 1

Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton Racecourse, for the finale of the Star Sports racing festival.

Don’t forget to say hello to our fabulous band the Top Bananas, you won’t miss them they are on stilts!

Alongside all of the above, don’t forget to see the horses in the paddock before each of our six races this afternoon. Runners head to post at 15.30 for today’s feature race; the Brighton Bullet, once again sponsored by the Bloom family, in memory of Harry Bloom.

Thank you to our headline festival sponsors Star Sports, once again for their fantastic support, and of course the Bloom family and Bennetts for their ongoing sponsorship.

We also thank Richard Soan for once again hosting a wonderful marquee charity event in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

I would like to give a special mention to our wonderful staff, who work so hard to get the festival on, from the grounds staff, to the caterers and our office staff, thank you very much, you are much appreciated.

We race again on the 19th of August, I look forward to seeing you then.

On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of

these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a highspecification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

The Brighton Bullet

A race for the speed merchants that has also previously been named the Brighton Sprint or the ‘Dash’.

Dual winners of the race include Divine Pet (Bill Wightman trained) in 1989 and 1991, and nine-times course winner Shikari’s Son (John White) who scored in 1992 and 1994.

Trainer Gay Kelleway enjoys her visits to Brighton and in 1997 provided Kieran Fallon with his first success on the course when Golden Pound lifted the Sprint. Gay was also on the board in 2011 when Clear Ice obliged under Chris Catlin.

Other trainers with a good affinity with this contest include Ron Harris who secured back-to-back wins with Prodigality (2012) and Noverre To Go (2013) and again in 2016 with Vincennti whilst Eve Johnson Houghton enjoyed wins with Panther Patrol (2014) and Tin Hat (2019)

The incredible one-eyed Pour La Victoire, Brighton’s most prolific course winner with 11 wins, was guided by Tont Carroll to land the Bullet in 2015 and 2018.

Newmarket handler William Haggas gained back-to-back wins with progressive types in Pagan and Pink Crystal during 2021/22. Roger Teal’s Alcazan followed up a success at Ascot when landing the prize a year ago.

This can go the way of ROMAN EMPEROR who didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when eighth at Lingfield recently and is taken to quickly resume winning ways. Bear To Dream is feared most in her bid to follow up last year’s victory in this event, with in-form duo Lynwood Lad and Neptune Legend both firmly in the picture too.
