Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Welcome to Bath Racecourse for our first evening meeting of the season.
We would like to thank our sponsors of tonight’s races, British European Breeders Fund, Blackmore, Betting,Bet and Best Cleaning Group.
Tonight’s card features seven exciting races, covering distances from 5½ furlongs to 1 mile 3½ furlongs.
Among them is the first qualifying race for the ever-popular Bath Stayers Series, taking place as our penultimate race of the evening.
Scheduled for 7:42pm, the Betting.Bet Horseracing Odds Handicap offers the first chance to book a spot in September’s Stayers Final, run over 1 mile 6 furlongs, with a share of a £35,000 prize fund up for grabs. These qualifiers offer points which when built up help guarantee a run in the final.
This evening’s qualifier sees the seasonal return of Blue Hero, an eight-time winner here at Bath. Trained by Adrian Wintle and ridden by Finley Marsh, the seven-year-old has the chance to become the first horse ever to claim nine victories at this course.
Currently, Blue Hero shares the record of eight wins with Delagate This Lord.
Remarkably, Blue Hero has only started as favourite in two of those wins, having achieved his tally in just 22 starts over four seasons. By contrast, Delagate This Lord has made 20 appearances at Bath across seven years, winning half of his races as favourite or joint favourite.
Best of luck to all connections this evening!
Next up at Bath racecourse is an afternoon meeting on Friday 23rd May. Our first music night of the season is on Friday 6th June and features an Oasis tribute band live after racing – we hope to see you there!

Executive Director

We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (20-25): A Wintle (26 wins from 160 runners, 16%) runs BUCK BARROW TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Bell (8 wins from 22 runners, 36%) runs BATTLE STRIDE

The one who appeals most is PENN AVENUE, who took a sizeable step forward when second to Zappata upped to a mile on her recent handicap debut at Wetherby. The latter has gone on to add another three handicaps to his tally, which makes the 1lb rise Penn Avenue incurred for that effort look rather lenient. Respiro Solitario wasn’t far away in third in that Wetherby race and is likely to emerge as the main danger, though Battle Stride is also interesting.
