WELCOME TO ARDMORE
Located between the Arbuckle Mountains to the north and the Red River to the South, southern Oklahoma offers stunning natural scenery and friendly hospitality. With just four exits off I-35 leading to town, Ardmore could easily be bypassed. But take a little trip off the interstate, and you’ll discover an incredible community with unmatched opportunities to play, work, and live. Ardmore is a city that celebrates its heritage while embracing innovation and exploring new frontiers. Now, we want to invite you to be a part of it!
Twenty years before Oklahoma gained statehood, Ardmore was established in 1887 when the Santa Fe Railway settled a train track through a ranch in the former Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. By the 1890s, Ardmore grew from a cattle-loading station and a regional trading post into the largest inland cotton market in the world with over 2,500 residents
During its early years of incorporation, the area suffered setbacks. Soil depletion ruined the cotton crops. A raging fire destroyed the town’s buildings in 1895 and Ardmore’s downtown was again struck by disaster in 1915 after an oil tank explosion killed and injured many. Through it all, the locals showed grit and determination.
The community banded together and rebuilt the town better and stronger. In 1913, the Healdton oil fields were discovered west of Ardmore and brought booming growth to the city.
Ardmore is a welcoming destination, full of passionate, entrepreneurial, and civic-minded people. Whether you’re visiting or looking for a new place to call home, you will be greeted with open arms and invited to stay awhile! Brave individuals and enterprising companies founded this city, and their energy reverberates into the present. Today, Ardmore remains focused on what matters – history, culture, innovation, and southern Oklahoma hospitality.
CONNECT WITH CONFIDENCE
A city thrives when its citizens, civic leaders, and elected officials work together. Gifted with local government leaders dedicated to the health and well-being of its people and businesses, and a multitude of local civic organizations working to support quality of life from every facet, Ardmore is no different.
Alongside these community leaders, business owners, educators, and citizens, three organizations work full-time to support and grow the community – the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, the Ardmore Development Authority, and the Ardmore Tourism Authority.
ARDMORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Since 1914, the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce has been a champion of business prosperity and the quality of life in the community. The Chamber represents hundreds of southern Oklahoma businesses and organizations of all sizes and industries. AMBASSADORS
This dedicated group of volunteers serves as the welcoming arm of the Chamber, promoting goodwill among its members. They actively integrate members into the Chamber’s programs by attending Ribbon Cuttings, Business Showcase, and other events, engaging in meetings and greetings. Beyond these events, they play a crucial role in promoting attendance and participation, as well as publicizing Chamber events. Their efforts contribute to increasing the visibility of members, fostering membership growth through personal contact, and effectively representing the goals and objectives of the Chamber. WELCOME TO TUCKER TOWER!
This building is the most identifiable structure within any of Oklahoma’s state parks. It was designed and primarily built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930’s. Tucker Tower is named for Fred Tucker, who was a state senator during the time that Lake Murray was being constructed.
Tucker Tower access is gained through the Lake Murray Nature Center. After visiting the Nature Center, you take a short walk up the path to Tucker Tower which sits on a cliff overlooking Lake Murray. There are two levels of Tucker Tower. The main level and floor is a museum with exhibits and displays about the history of the tower and the surrounding area. There is a patio on the main level of the building that overlooks the lake. This patio is some 60 feet above the surface of the lake.
Beyond the main level, there are a couple of stair cases that will take you up to the top of Tucker Tower. The top level of the tower is 65 feet or so above the patio level. The top of the tower has a walkway all the way around that lets you see for miles in every direction. The best views of the lake are from Tucker Tower. It is a great opportunity for photos of the lake.
The views from the tower are unique and should not be missed on any trip to Lake Murray. You can look out across the lake’s stunning blue waters. Or you can look down at the shoreline and see the bottom of the lake on most days due to the clear waters of Lake Murray.
If you are looking for things to do at Lake Murray, Tucker Tower and the Lake Murray Nature Center should be at the top of your list.

THE HISTORY BEHIND OUR NAME:
WHO WAS HARDY MURPHY?
Born in 1903, Hardy Murphy, the grandson of an old-line Texas horse trader, had a love for horses in his blood. This love quickly developed into a career of international acclaim as a horse trainer and rodeo showman. During his career in the 1930s and ’40s, Hardy astounded audiences with his reenactments of scenes depicted in works of art by well-known Western painters and sculptors.
With his trusted equine partners, Buck, Silver Cloud, and Thor, by his side, Hardy performed his talents in front of children, large audiences, and even the Royal Court in London. Hardy and Buck’s fame as a rodeo showman duo led them to become the inspiration for western ballads—”Gold Mine in the Sky” and “A Cowboy’s Best Friend.” They were even featured on the cover of “The New Yorker” in October 1944.
A LEGACY IS REMEMBERED
After three decades in the “Big Circuit,” Hardy retired and returned to Ardmore in 1943 to enter the world of business and enjoy a family life. He began a second career as a realtor, civic promoter, fund-raiser, volunteer, and part-time performer for charities. These activities won him the affection of the community, which resulted in the award we know today: the name Hardy Murphy donning the Coliseum.
Buck officially retired in a nationally televised show during the Fort Worth International Stock Show in 1953 and was buried on the grounds of the Coliseum. Hardy Murphy passed away in 1961, but his memory lives on in our coliseum every day.
