simple8 is an ensemble based theatre company who specialise in creating innovative, bold new plays that tackle big ideas using large casts – all on a shoe-string budget. Using a variety of techniques – poor theatre, mime, live music and song, puppetry and magic – we aim to produce plays that are fun, inventive, original and daring. simple8 has a strong commitment to environmental issues and continues to work alongside Arcola Theatre to develop policies based on the principles of ecological sustainability.

simple8 introduce vivid details of behaviour, play with theatrical illusions and interact with an easy, natural grace. They have indeed created an ensemble. The Times

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari A new play inspired by the cult film

Moby-Dick A new play adapted from Herman Melville’s novel

by Sebastian Armesto

by Dudley Hinton and Sebastian Armesto with simple8

It’s true. It’s all true for MobyDick. He’s a killer, he’s a fury, he’s an angel of hell. Why if the white whale could talk he’d talk like Ahab.

Franzis Gruber, a lowly bureaucrat, lives a neat and ordered life in a sleepy, provincial German town. When a travelling fair arrives, full of clowns, freaks, magicians and sleepwalkers, it drags Franzis into a series of nightmarish murders – spinning dreams into reality, the imagined into truth and order into chaos.

1851. Nantucket. Centre of a whaling industry that transformed blubber into the oils and candles that lit the world. It’s here that a schoolmaster called Ishmael arrives to ship on a whale-boat. He enrols under Ahab, Captain of the Pequod – a man bent on destroying the white whale that lost him his leg. Certain the destruction of his nemesis will slake his thirst, Ahab’s single-minded pursuit of Moby-Dick consumes Ishmael, the crew and the Pequod itself.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of the most influential films of all time: a box office smash in 1920, it came to define cinematic Expressionism and inspire Film Noir. Torn from the screen, simple8 transforms the film into a fast, frenzied fairground sideshow with a “pungently evocative and blackly amusing master-class in the art of ‘poor’ theatre” (Time Out).

The spirit and atmosphere of Herman Melville’s masterpiece – romantic, ambiguous, characterful and rich with allegory – is captured on stage by simple8 with “a treasure chest of talented actors, impressive musicians and intelligent scripting and directing” (New Statesman).

“simple8 specialise in creating theatrical riches on a shoestring” The Independent

Shadows, dreams, they’re all around us, they’re everywhere!

“Innovation on an earthbound budget. The techniques of ‘poor theatre’ have rarely been better employed” Evening Standard
