letter from the editor In our second issue of Iconic, we’re revisiting the home of Kerri Hoyt-Pack. I love this project! It was a special one as I got to be there for the making of our Inspired by Story video, which showcases Kerri, her home and the relationship she developed with the ARCIFORM team throughout a 10-year whole house remodeling process. What I love most about this project is Kerri’s eclectic style.

Little knick-knacks scattered about on window sills, a rich color palette and of course the wallpaper... that bathroom! Kerri describes her style as “pretty funky and eclectic and filled with story: a mix of all the cultures and environments I’ve been in throughout my life.”

What’s really special is to see how Anne works with her client’s style. I like listening in as she and Kerri discuss things like the salvaged shelves in the kitchen. They were inspired by the paneling made by Pioneer Millworks at Olympia Provisions. So, using salvaged trans-pacific shipping wood from The Port of Portland, they worked together to design their own!

On the day of the video shoot, I got to see how much Anne cares about her clients and her work as she rehearsed the perfect words to encapsulate what the ARCIFORM team does best.

“At ARCIFORM we’re inspired by the stories of people and spaces. We bring stories to life – we revive them. The stories of buildings that conjure up the eras in which they were created, and the stories of the people that are interwoven with the buildings – the designers, the craftspeople, the owners and the people who lived or worked there. It’s all carried forward and preserved in our work,” says Anne.

So, while ARCIFORM is technically a restoration company, in a sense what they really do is “re-story” the past, preserving the best of period architecture while rephrasing it in a modern vernacular of comfort, convenience and efficiency.

Anne adds, “We don’t shoot for ‘like.’ That’s a pretty low bar. We aim for love.”

In daytime hours, the new skylight bathes the room in a soft glow. A floating quartztopped vanity by Versatile Wood Products is a cheery spot to start or end the day.

Kerri’s favorite is the bump-out in the kitchen with green leather bench seats and blue plaster that John Macnab hand-applied. “The blue color is mixed into the plaster. It breathes and interacts with the changing light of our Pacific Northwestern days – it’s got life in it. The room feels like this little heartbeat in the house.” Surrounded on three sides by windows, the nook lets guests relax while Kerri cooks in the meticulously restored, efficient country-style kitchen with natural wood floors, a white wood ceiling, standalone porcelain sink and antique metal-topped islands on wheels.

With the upstairs bathroom/laundry addition Kerri knew the colors and wallpaper that she wanted to use, as well as a Chinese screen to conceal the laundry. Anne made it all work perfectly for the space. “It was a really nice combination of our skills and also our passions that came together in this union,” said Kerri.

Far from feeling dark, however, the room creates a continuum of intimacy from the front to the back of the house, the place she feels safe and secure. Everything in the room evokes stories, from her father’s painting that has hung on her walls since college days to editorial photos

of her partner and daughters as young girls to the many objects from her life arranged on a shelf that was her dad’s. A pillow with a bird motif adorns the black leather schoolhouse sofa. “We called this the birdhouse back when it was just my daughters and me,” said Kerri. Birds appear in surprising ways through the house on other textiles, paintings, and sculpture.

Kerri’s quirky combination of things comes from her lived experiences, a living embodiment of her life and travels.

“Every piece of fabric, every color, every texture, every found item creates this beautiful field for your eyes, and also you feel very held in this space. I find a lot of joy through creating beautiful spaces.”

Anne De Wolf speaks of “shooting for love” as the goal of all ARCIFORM’s projects. In this ten year, close collaboration that brought out the best of her Anne and Kerri’s love for story and joy in creating beautiful spaces, she definitely succeeded. • 16

Little Spaces, Big Impact While you are planning your main floor, don’t forget the little spaces that can have a big impact on your guests’ comfort.

Consider: • Should you add or update a powder room for guests?

• How will you tackle your mudroom needs?

Whether you design a full mudroom addition like the one below or simply designate an area adjacent to the back door, you’ll want to consider how the essential functions of capturing coats, keys, shoes and other items will be handled in your master plan.

Next on the renovation list should be the basement. Whether you are building in an investment opportunity with an ADU or giving the kids room to spread out, the basement should be the last room on your to-do list.

Such a flexible and complicated space is worthy of its own post, so look to Part Three for details on making the most of your basement renovation.

The look was sleek, with minimal ornamentation and increasing use of wood veneers, laminates and manufactured finishes.

Period Perfect Kitchen: Pre-1910 Was your home built before 1910? Do you ever wonder what the original kitchen would have looked like? Here are some of the style characteristics of a pre-1910 kitchen.

Kitchens were largely “utilitarian” rooms, or workspaces. Furniture-style cabinets. Before the turn of the century, cabinets were rarely fitted to the walls. The largest counter space was often a long table in the middle of the room and storage was often a hutch or sideboard.

Tall narrow proportions. Victorian homes tended towards high, narrow proportions. In the kitchen, you might see this in the windows, door openings and ceiling height.

Free standing appliances. There was often just a sink and a wood burning or gas oven.

Ornate millwork details. Victorian interiors often feature decorative borders with wide crown molding and elaborate ceiling medallions.

Tens and Teens: Do you have a 1910-1919 home?

Here are some of the style characteristics of a 19101919 kitchen.

Subway tile. The tile backsplash became popular, and sink faucets were often mounted on the wall as opposed to the counter.

Full inset cabinetry. The full inset cabinetry in the early 1900’s reflects the simplicity of the era.

Painted cabinets mixed with stained cabinets. Moving away from completely “sanitary” white, stained cabinets were incorporated.

Farmhouse sinks. Sinks were either mounted over cabinets, or stood on cast iron legs.

This style would usually make use of the ball tip hinge which was installed to be visible on the exterior of the cabinet. Right you see an example of the “full-inset” cabinet doors that were also common during the period. This style would feature cabinet doors that were designed to fit exactly inside the cabinet opening and appear flush with the cabinet face frame when closed.

Tile counters: Decorative tile counters and backdrops are seen during the forties, often with strongly graphic patterns and pops of color.

Enameled appliances: Enameled metal appliances continue to be popular in the ’40s and would often feature the bold colors favored during the era.

Bakelite drawer and door pulls: The deco influence of the ’40s is most clearly seen in the prevalence of bakelite drawer pulls that often had an art deco design element.
