Carlos Madrid III, a senior designer at the Los Angeles branch of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), has been lovingly renovating his white plaster bungalow-style home for the past two years. Originally built in 1912, the residence was the living quarters for migrant farm workers. With just 800 square feet, Madrid’s main objective was to make the home more usable and comfortable. “I wanted to capitalize on the Southern California lifestyle,” he said.

To accomplish this, Madrid installed La Cantina’s aluminum 3-panel bi-fold doors. The doors flexibly swing inside and outside in multiple open and closed positions—anywhere

along the spectrum from wide open to completely closed. The system is equipped with a concealed multi-sealed lock, giving the architect freedom to fully open his home and the security to thoroughly close it.

In effect, Madrid made the space more usable by opening it up the living areas to create the illusion of increased square footage. “This window system blurs the lines between the inside and out, while increasing the perceived size of the living and dining areas,” said Madrid.

For its Chicago headquarters, job and recruiting site Glassdoor worked with Valerio Dewalt Train Associates to create an office that would reflect the identities of both the company and its neighborhood. Glassdoor chose a single-floor, 51,500-square-foot space in the Fulton Market District, and the architects worked to carve the space into inward- and outward-facing zones.

Naturally (and with no pun intended), this included glass doors and walls that help to provide a welcoming atmosphere with multifunctional purpose. The reception area features three different entries into the office, delineated by curved glass Euro-Wall panels.

“The lobby is designed as the 'outward voice' to the public and offers glimpses of the brand’s colors composed within the architecture to create a first impression of the Glassdoor identity,” explained project architect James Wild.

In the internal side of the office, multipurpose nodes are transformed with curved operable walls that slide aside so that the training room can convert into an all hands intra-office meeting area. Large glass panels

by Glass Solutions offer sweeping views of the Loop and the city. Interior rooms feature picture windows with colorful Chicago-themed graphics that also contribute to wayfinding around the space.

"The Glassdoor office is Chicago," principal Joseph Valerio, the lead architect for the Glassdoor space, said in a statement.

"We integrated activity nodes that shape and curve space in a way that reflects both new initiatives and a continued commitment to employee empowerment."

Nestled on the rolling hills of the campus at University of California, Davis, the Museum of Art is both a contemporary art museum and a unique classroom/exhibition space designed

by SO-IL and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. By way of the layout and the formal design elements, the institution establishes itself as a conduit for education via two overhead operable garage doors. The openings create two flexible spaces: one to host lectures, events, or exhibitions and another to offer visitors open views into the museum’s loading areas and galleries.

The museum wanted to have a partition or the ability to section off that part of the building, while also giving notable presence of the room. In turn, two anodized aluminum garage doors maufactured by C.H.I. Overhead Doors allow for the community education room to be used in varied contexts and formats. For instance, it can serve the university as a lecture room for events, or as a biology class, or even an exhibition space. The operable walls are a unique feature because they are directly connected to the lobby, and therefore, make that space a direct extension of it.

Nearby, between galleries and art loading dock, another transparent overhead wall sections off the areas for art handling and display.

There, you can lift the door and move right into the galleries or back into the museum back of house. In effect, this creates transparency by providing views into curatorial and art handling processes. The glazed glass allows visitors to see the art and the operations behind the museum.

At the front and the back of the museum, the aluminum-framed glass operable wall systems are non-custom overhead sectional doors—essentially, garage doors outfitted with glazed panels. Via an electronically operated mechanical system, the doors are adjusted open, ajar in varying heights, and closed. With security and visability in mind, the digital system enables only those with the code to open the door while still prioviding open views inside and out. In operation, the museum’s day-to-day activities and inner workings are in plain sight allowing students and staff alike to see and become a part the entire operation.
