COMPETITION A little-known company from Thailand with grand ambitions in clean energy wants to take on Tesla Inc. at its own game.

Energy Absolute Pcl, which has morphed in recent years from a producer of biodiesel to Thailand’s leading renewable energy company, is eyeing a major push into energy storage with plans to develop a factory somewhere in Asia that would rival Tesla’s Gigafactory in both size and scope.

The Thai company is currently considering its home nation and three other Asian countries as a manufacturing base for a lithium-ion battery project that could eventually be worth as much as 100 billion baht ($2.9 billion), Amorn Sapthaweekul, the company’s deputy chief executive officer, said in an interview in Bangkok.

The project’s first phase would consist of production capacity of 1 gigawatt-hour, according to a company statement issued last month.

“We will choose just one location for the manufacturing plant,” Amorn said.

“We would prefer to have the plant in Thailand, which will be beneficial for the country’s development. Still, we need to see clear government policy.”

Battery Manufacturing Energy Absolute’s ambitious plans in energy storage would catapult Thailand into a top tier location for battery manufacturing, according to a Bloomberg New Energy Finance analysis of the market conducted in April. If Energy Absolute were to make good on its plans, Thailand would become the largest center for lithium-ion battery production after China, according to London-based BNEF. It’s a big bet for a company better known locally as a renewable energy producer and with only limited experience in storage through its 35.2 percent stake in Amita Technologies Inc., a Taiwan-based manufacturer of lithium ion and polymer batteries.

But it’s also in character. Energy Absolute, founded by Somphote Ahunai, vowed in 2014 to spend about 46 billion baht to increase its renewable energy generation capacity to as much as 570 megawatts by 2017. Capacity at Energy Absolute’s renewable power plants will increase to 404 megawatts this year and will climb further to 664 megawatts next year, according to Amorn.

Since embarking on its renewable energy push, Energy Absolute’s shares have surged, leaping about 135 percent in the past three years.

“Given its sound financial status with cash inflows of at least 6 billion baht annually, it would be able to materialize the first phase,” Thanatphat Suksrichavalit, a Bangkok-based analyst at Phillip Securities Pte Ltd., said by phone. “Funding isn’t an issue. The first phase is to test market demand.”

HTT has plans to build a hyperloop track in Quay Valley, California, where the company is doing an environmental study. It has also been exploring feasibility of building in countries from Indonesia to the Czech Republic. But Ahlborn said the first track will unlikely be in Quay Valley.

That's where the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could potentially have the first operational hyperloop track. Global Warming Thanks to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change we know: ●

From 1880 to 2012, average global temperature increased by 0.85°C. To put this into perspective, for each 1 degree of temperature increase, grain yields decline by about 5 per cent. Maize, wheat and other major crops have experienced significant yield reductions at the global level of 40 megatonnes per year between 1981 and 2002 due to a warmer climate.

Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished and sea level has risen. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm as oceans expanded due to warming and ice melted. The Arctic’s sea ice extent has shrunk in every successive decade since 1979, with 1.07 million km² of ice loss every decade Given current concentrations and on-going emissions of greenhouse gases, it is likely that by the end of this century, the increase in global temperature will exceed 1.5°C compared to 1850 to 1900 for all but one scenario. The world’s oceans will warm and ice melt will continue. Average sea level rise is predicted as 24 – 30cm by 2065 and 40-63cm by 2100. Most aspects of climate change will persist for many centuries even if emissions are stopped Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by almost 50 per cent since 1990 Emissions grew more quickly between 2000 and 2010 than in each of the three previous decades It is still possible, using a wide array of technological measures and changes in behaviour, to limit the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels Major institutional and technological change will give a better than even chance that global warming will not exceed this threshold

Climate change is a global challenge that does not respect national borders. Emissions anywhere affect people everywhere. It is an issue that requires solutions that need to be coordinated at the international level and it requires international cooperation to help developing countries move toward a low-carbon economy.

To address climate change, countries adopted the Paris Agreement at the COP21 in Paris on 12 December 2015. The Agreement entered into force shortly thereafter, on 4 November 2016. In the agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and given the grave risks, to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius. Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and provides a roadmap for climate actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience.

FKI TOWER BIPV SEOUL, N/A / KOREA SOUTH FKI Tower’s innovative façade features a specifically designed Building Integrated Photovoltaic System (BIPV) that collects and generates energy, reduces internal heating and cooling loads, and limits the need for artificial lighting.

The folded texture of the skin improves the quality of the tenant experience in several additional ways. One of the central sustainable benefits of the design, beyond the BIPV system, is the reduction of glare and heat gains from direct sunlight, while maintaining a high level of indirect light, thus minimizing the need for artificial lighting. With the exception of early morning and late afternoon, the building is able to use the geometry of the exterior wall to self-shade the perimeter spaces that would normally be inundated with direct sunlight.

The water system, therefore, provides for a number of different recreational and technological functions, with free surface tanks acting as reservoirs for the irrigation and fire-prevention systems, and even serves as a flood-control system for the River Adige.

Moreover, the water system will even serve an important cultural function thanks to the network of informative pathways to be built along the banks of the canals themselves, which will be used by the Science Museum for studies on specific scientific topics.

One of the project’s additional themes is the presence of water within the park area. To this end, one of the main objectives from the outset has been to bring city of Trento closer to its main artery: the River Adige. These canals will traverse the area from north to south and will feed the two large bodies of water upon which the structures dedicated to public functions seem to “float”.

hTis concept gave rise to the idea of ​a single power station, located beyond the confines of the complex itself on the right shore of the River Adige, which will distribute and recover energy from each sector, thanks to a main underground pipeline running along a north-south axis.This network will have a single delivery point in the basement of each building sector.

This system, comprised of a single centralized power station and various remote substations, will allow for the machinery and utilities to be concentrated locally, thus optimizing costs and ensuring a limited environmental impact.Furthermore, the system will be bolstered by each building’s special energy-saving design, the layout and construction of which will guarantee the absolute highest standards in terms of insulation and heat loss.

As soon as you open the sluice gate in the dam, water will flow out: The potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.
