1916-1918 The Patio Centennial 2016-2018

David Oswinkle

There have been countless images of The Patio over the years. Everything from sketches, to paintings, to photographs, they all evoke a different perspective or emotion about the building. The cover of this issue was meant to depict the building in its original role as a home. The house is filled with light and gives off an inviting warmth that spreads throughout the campus to this day. Join us as we celebrate our one of a kind treasure and it's unique history.

A Letter from the Headmaster Dear Members of the Archmere Community, One hundred years – a century – is longer than most of our lifetimes. One hundred years is what we celebrate beginning this year through 2018 to focus on the history of the Patio at Archmere. First conceived by architects Clay McClure and Alexander Harper, working closely with the aesthetic appreciated by John and Helena Raskob, their mansion house would become the home of Archmere Academy in 1932. Many of the details of the daily events of the family and of the school that took place within its rooms have gone unrecorded. We do have an extensive archive of photographs that captures the different periods of the home’s use. The early school yearbooks offer a glimpse into daily school life in the Patio, when bedrooms were turned into dormitories and the dining room became the school cafeteria. Some stories from the Raskob years continue to be passed among generations of family members and are recorded in Mrs. Raskob’s β€œRaskob-Green Record Book,” as well as the book, β€œRobinson Remembrances.” Stories include the Raskob children riding bicycles around the fountain in the courtyard and the children sliding across the newly waxed music room floor in their stocking feet. A new era began in 2010 with school administrative offices moving into the building, encircling the courtyard on the second floor. Soon after, student classroom and activities spaces were created in renovated rooms, including the basement level, which is usable once again. In 1916, the Raskobs had the original mansion house razed, having bought the estate next door, Woodsedge, where they lived for two years during the construction of the Patio, which was completed in the Spring of 1918. The family returned with a new addition - Nina, who was born in October of 1916 at Woodsedge. As the family grew, Mrs. Raskob’s interests in running Pioneer Point Farm increased. Mr. Raskob’s roles as Chairman of the National Democratic Party and his involvement on many corporate boards drew him to New York and Washington. Spending less and less time in Wilmington, the Raskobs decided to sell Archmere. In 1932, Abbot Bernard H. Pennings, O.Praem., Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey, negotiated the purchase of Archmere from Mr. Raskob at a selling price of $400,000. Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., was appointed the first headmaster of the new Archmere Academy for boys, and arrived in early August to have the school ready for students in September – a very tall order in a short time. In the first year, 22 boys were enrolled, though the goal was 50 students. In the second year, finances continued to be a challenge. A glimpse at the life of boarding students living in the Patio during Archmere's early years. Male boarders lived on campus until 1976.

4

At one point in 1934, Father McKeough wrote to the Abbot to say that he could not pay all of the school’s bills, having to make decisions about paying for food for the students, oil for heating, and the mortgage payment to Mr. Raskob. Part of the negotiated purchase included Mr. Raskob holding the mortgage, which was a fortunate arrangement. When Mr. Raskob was informed of the difficulty the school was having in making payments, though we do not have detailed records, it is our understanding that he extended the term of the loan and also forgave $100,000 of the purchase price. From the earliest days of the Academy, the school has been blessed with the philanthropy of so many people, and the home-like atmosphere has permeated the life of the Archmere school community over the years. There are a few signature images of the Patio that will remain with me forever. In 1975 at my Junior Class Ring Mass, we were announced at the front entrance of the Patio and walked through a papier-mΓ’chΓ© larger-than-life Class Ring, complete with an emerald stone, in the center of the courtyard. Couples then walked to the center doors of the music room, where we were presented with our class rings. It was not until later that the Junior Class Ring Mass was instituted, and the original center fountain in the Patio was returned in 1993. Before then, the terra cotta β€œA” (that now rests in the center of the Stations of the Cross garden next to the Patio) filled the space that the fountain occupies. So you can imagine, that, depending on the event, the center of the courtyard was the focal point for many designs, including giant twenty-foot Christmas trees, cornstalks for Homecoming dances, and various prom-themed displays, including a lighthouse. In my junior and senior years at Archmere, I was a member of the debating team. I remember spending a snowy Saturday afternoon in January writing β€œevidence cards” with other members of the team in the Patio library. The dark wood paneling, large fireplace, and yards and yards of books all around the room somehow elevated that somewhat grueling task, making me feel as though I was enrolled in some noted English boarding school. In fact, the Patio, as a part of the campus experience, made me even more proud to be a part of an academic institution whose original buildings – The Patio and The Manor - had historic significance for their art and architecture, as well as for their builders and owners. These buildings have much to offer. They can teach generations of Archmere students about art, architecture, engineering, science, politics, economics, social norms, philanthropy, and a host of other topics.

The newly remodeled St. Norbert hall offers flexible and modern learning spaces for Archmere students.

5

A Letter from the Headmaster Over the next two years, we plan to celebrate this rich history by developing a number of opportunities for all members of the Archmere community to learn more about the Patio. I hope that many of you will enjoy learning some new fact about Archmere history related to the Patio and Manor that you may not have known before. An Archmere parent, in a conversation with me, remarked that, while beautiful facilities are appreciated, it is the teaching – the teacher-student dynamic – that is most important. And I agreed. I believe that we support that dynamic very well. However, we have been entrusted with the legacy of a beautiful and historic campus that requires our appreciation and attention to preservation. So, while we insure the best possible academic experience in keeping with Archmere’s tradition, we also must be attentive to the environment in which our students learn and our teachers advise. Hence, the St. Norbert Hall renovations underway presently, and the Board of Trustees’ and the members of the Administration’s master planning and vision for the maintenance and renovation of other buildings and grounds, all have an impact on the Archmere experience for students. Students work on the oversized Archmere ring replica for the 1975 Junior Ring Mass dance.

As you know, we are in the middle of a Comprehensive Campaign for Archmere, one that is raising funds for St. Norbert Hall renovations, as well as endowment funds for scholarship and financial assistance to insure an affordable Archmere education to many future families. We are most grateful for all those who have supported our causes in recent years and years before, but our financial need still exists. Sometimes I think that people look at our beautiful and well-kept campus facilities and think, β€œArchmere doesn’t need my support. It is doing just fine.” The truth is that we are blessed with wonderful benefactors, but the legitimate requests we receive from families with financial need each year continues to increase and our operating costs escalate annually, of which approximately 70% are related to teachers and staff. We have implemented measurable cost-saving strategies around energy use, negotiated health care rates, and instituted workplace safety programs that have reduced insurance premiums. However, these innovations that have helped to β€œbend the cost curve” cannot completely address

the annual increases in operating costs. We need to achieve our goals of increasing endowment income and support from annual gifts, while asking for one-time, multi-year, capital pledges to meet our comprehensive campaign goal of $8.5 million for the renovation of St. Norbert Hall. With regard to Patio restoration, we have been able to accomplish much with the funds raised by the Friends of the Patio and the Green Concerts that we have held over the last five years. With the tremendous skill set of our facilities staff under the direction of Mr. James Tosi, Director of Facilities, much of the restoration work in the Patio has been completed with modest budgets and underwritten initially by funds raised outside of school operations. As more and more spaces in the Patio were converted to school administrative offices, classrooms, and

meeting spaces for students and teachers, some of those projects have been underwritten in part by the Academy’s capital budget. The repurposing of Patio spaces has allowed for a most efficient renovation of St. Norbert Hall, creating more varied and numerous student learning and teaching spaces while expanding the footprint of the building by less than 500 square feet in the library and learning commons area. The school community owes a great debt of gratitude to Mr. Tosi for taking care of the school facilities as though they were his own for the nine years he has served as Director of Facilities. While a centenary celebration is certainly an accomplishment in a human life, it may not be perceived as so great for a building, certainly in ancient civilizations around the world. However, in the history of our β€œAmerican Experiment,” our celebration of the Patio and Manor’s one hundred years of existence is well-deserved, not only because of the estate’s role in the interesting life of a second-century America, but in the emotionally connected existence of the students and families who have lived and experienced Archmere over the last eighty-four years. Offering Prayers and Best Wishes to the Archmere Community that will celebrate the Patio’s centennial, on behalf of all who have cared for and loved the Patio for the last one-hundred years, I offer my sincere gratitude for entrusting such a legacy to our generation! Sincerely,

Michael A. Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76 Headmaster 7

Beginnings Mr. John Jakob Raskob purchased the property of Archmere for $27,000. After making improvements on the house, the Raskobs moved

in on August 1, 1910. Four of the Raskob's 12 children were born in the original mansion house. Eventually, it became too small for the growing family, and they decided to build a new residence on the same site. The Patio and Manor Hall were begun in 1916 and completed in 1918. While the Raskobs lived at Archmere, the house was alive with activity. Archmere was the headquarters for Democrat Al Smith's Presidential campaign of 1928. The famous Anton Lang was the Raskob's houseguest, while performing his role of Jesus Christ at the theatre in Wilmington. With Archmere becoming a "regular stop" along the well-traveled Philadelphia Pike, and the construction of Worth Steel Plant (Phoenix Steel) nearby, the Raskob's decided to move to a more secluded locale. Picking 1600 acres of the choicest waterfront property, they built a new estate in Centreville, Maryland, leaving Archmere in 1930. The estate was sold to the Norbertine Fathers of St. Norbert Abbey in DePere, Wisconsin, in 1932, and Archmere Academy was established.

A Building Before Its Time The external beauty of the Patio becomes even more appreciable when one considers the mechanical triumphs extending from basement to roof. In a time when air conditioning was unheard of, engineer Clay McClure cleverly cooled the large central courtyard and all the other rooms in the house. The air circulation system, housed in a room off the basement bowling alley, cooled air by passing it over an 80-foot well. Using a massive engine, the air was then filtered throughout the house via a network of ducts. Such mechanical devices as an elevator, dumb waiters, and laundry shoots were common in more elegant houses of the day. But the Raskob's have the distinction of being the first family in the world to build a home with an electric-powered movable skylight. The idea was inspired by a similar, but smaller skylight incorporated in the Pan American Union building in Washington, D.C. Mounted on railroad tracks, with high tension cable to prevent sudden jerks from damaging the stained-glass ceiling, the skylight was rolled back into roof-top pockets by two electric motors. An outer layer of thick-wired glass and tar provides protection. The interior ceiling is suspended by thin wires from an interior metal framework. Created by Henry Keck, the stained glass creation was removed, piece-by-piece, for cleaning in 1977. The lighting system was rewired, and the exterior roof was repaired. When the ceiling was rehung over a year later, it would not open again, since the motors and the mechanism were removed,

"When Building, Build Forever” Restoration efforts over the years have been designed to treat the building in the context of its function as a part of the school, while incorporating the character of the Raskob home. Bowling matches in the basement was once the favorite indoor sport of the students at Archmere. The popular pastime resulted in keen rivalry among the original boarding students. Teams were organized and prizes were awarded to the winning teams. Over the years the basement level suffered extensive water damage that filled the original bowling alley, ruining the lanes. In recent years, the space has been repurposed and refinished as a multifunctional room that has been a practice space for fencing and dance as well as an academic classroom.

Restored to much of its former elegance, it became the Priory dining room in 1975. The original dining room table and 16 chairs have been returned to Archmere. Joining the original table and chairs is a Cartier silver tea service, which was gifted by the Raskob’s to Mr. and Mrs. William Berl on the occasion of their wedding on January 8, 1923. Mr. and Mrs. Berl’s daughter, Marie β€œT” Ferguson, and her husband John, gifted the tea service to Archmere on August 20, 2015. The Maison Cartier, the French design house founded in 1847, created this silver tea service. The main service has 11 pieces, and it is accompanied by a demitasse set, with Lenox china cup inserts, a total of 31 pieces.

The music room, dominated by the Welte-Mignon organ, was used as the school chapel, until St. Norbert Hall was built in 1959. Restoration of the organ began in the summer of 2015. Members of the Dickinson Organ Society, organized by William Church, will begin installing the organ in the original two chambers that housed the pipes for the Welte-Mignon organ Γ’€“ the main chamber beneath the Music Room and the antiphonal chamber located to the right of the fireplace in the courtyard, also in the lower level. For more on the Patio organ restoration project, see page 14. The Raskobs planned their living room as a warm and comfortable place, where the family could convene for an enjoyable evening. the house, was used as a classroom. During the 1960's it became a vesting room and a chapel room for private Masses. Today, the room has been returned to itΓ’€™s original purpose and acts as a relaxed gathering space. The library is located on the north side of the house. Used as a study hall and as the school library, this room currently houses some of John Raskob's collection of books and memorabilia. The original oriental carpet, library table, and dinner "gong " are in the living room, while the original writing table is in the library. graduation ceremonies during the early days of the Academy. Dances, proms, ring masses, and baccalaureate masses, weddings, dinner-dances, class reunions, and fundraisers have all been held in the courtyard of the Patio. On November 1, 1993 the original fountain that once stood in the center of The Patio was given back to the Academy by Mrs. Josephine Robinson and her family. After a delicate journey from Hartefeld House, where it stood outside in the garden since 1932, the fountain was reinstalled in its original spot, using the original plumbing in the basement room below. After 70 years, Mrs. Raskob's words are more prophetic and meaningful than ever: "When building, build forever." The Patio has remained a priceless treasure for Archmere. While it primarily functions as a gathering space and offices for the schoolΓ’€™s administration, The Patio still serves as a home for anyone who walks through its doors.

The library was used as a study hall during the School's early years.

Restoring the Sounds of the Past "In late 1915, Mr. Raskob purchased a Welte-Mignon organ for $30,000. There were some delays in construction, not in the organ itself but in the console, built into an ornamental screen of the architects’ design, and for which the architects lagged in supplying precise details. Promised for March 1917, the organ was finally installed and ready in mid-autumn. It included its own Victrola and Synchronizer for organ accompaniment of soloist recordings, with the Victrola installed directly behind the tone opening. As organs in homes go, Mr. Raskob’s Welte was considerable The music room was the heart of the house during the Raskob years.

in size, with 33 different tone colors, 34 individual sets of pipes and 2,102 individual pipes. 29 ranks were located in a cellar chamber beneath the music room, adjacent to Mr.

Raskob’s smoking/billiard room. Despite the enormity of the organ chamber, the tone pipes had to squeeze through a narrow floor opening, the width of the ornamental organ screen but only as deep. While it cannot have been tremendously powerful in the music room, the organ spoke directly into the smoking room through a grille, and from that vantage was probably more commanding." - Excerpt from organ research by Mr. Jonathan Ambrosino Today, all the remains of the Welte organ is the console, the original blower and its preliminary bellows, and a few odd bits of cabling in the echo chamber. The main and echo organ chambers are both entirely emptied of any organ materials, and in each case the tone chute has been floored over. Behind the organ screen is now a four-rank organ supplied by the United States Pipe Organ Company of Crym Lynne, Pennsylvania. The organ is a 1913, 17-rank, three manual, Kimball Theater Organ, including some choice additional Wurlitzer pipes and percussions. The console was originally installed in the State Theater in Philadelphia. After removal from the State it served time in the Brookline Theater and then in the Colonial Theater. From the Colonial it then went to the John Wanamaker Department Store, where it was used to play the great Wanamaker organ for two years or so while the Wanamaker console was being restored. From Wanamaker’s, it went on to the Dresden home, where much of the console was restored and modernized. The Dresden organ was transported to the lower level of the Patio in the former game room, adjacent to the main organ chamber, where members of the Dickenson Organ Society, organized by Bill Church, have begun installing the organ in the original two chambers that housed the pipes for the Welte-Mignon organ. The console will be refinished to match the screen and will be installed on a moveable platform in front of the organ, located where the original console was placed.

Outstanding Seniors Class of 2016 Valedictorian, Gregory McCord β€œToo often, people base a legacy solely around two standards: athletics and academics; body and mind. However, Archmere has not only prepared our bodies and minds for the world ahead but also our spirits for that journey. Just like our school motto, Pietate et Sciencia, through faith and knowledge, the Archmere education emphasizes both intellectual and spiritual development. Part of what makes our class so unique is our drive to succeed together and support one another through our endeavors.” Class of 2016 Valedictorian, Greg McCord, has excelled academically throughout his four years at Archmere. A National Merit Finalist, Greg took thirteen Advanced Placement courses, and was named a National AP Scholar after his junior year. Particularly talented in mathematics and science, he received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Medal and was a member of the Science Olympiad Team and T.E.A.M.S. (Tests of Engineering Aptitude Mathematics and Science) for all four years. Greg has traveled and competed at the national level for T.E.A.M.S., even placing as high as third in the nation. He has also competed in the Academic Quiz Bowl and made it to the state level for Math League all four years. He took the AMC tests (mathematics exams) all four years and qualified for the AIME during his senior year. While at Archmere, Greg was a member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. During his valedictory speech, Greg expressed sincere gratitude toward his parents for all of their sacrifice, love and support. He went on to recognize and thank his teachers who not only inspired and challenged him, but also became mentors and friends while at Archmere. β€œThey’ve made Archmere a very welcoming place for students. In fact, sometimes Mr. Jordan can be a little too welcoming when he greets us with his best Floyd Mayweather impression. I’ve still got the bruises from those good-morning punches to prove it.” For Greg, it was not the academic challenge and preparation for college that stuck out most to him about his Archmere Academy experience; rather, it was the sense of family and trust in their faith that set his class apart. Greg participated in daily Kenosis, was a Eucharistic minister, and a lector both for Archmere and his local parish, St. Mary of the Assumption. He was a rector for Kairos XL and retreatant for Kairos XXXVIII, two experiences that aligned with his faith background.

16

Archmere graduated 106 seniors on June 5, 2016 at the Academy’s 82nd Commencement Exercises in the Performing Arts Center. An impressive class all around, the Class of 2016 garnered over $20 million dollars in scholarships and grants, and enrolled at 60 different colleges and universities around the country. Among this notable group are this year’s Valedictorian, Gregory McCord β€˜16, and Salutatorian, Rahul Subbaraya β€˜16.

β€œArchmere has helped us find our faith, taught us to place our trust in each other, and kept us moving forward together. We may have stumbled along the way, but we always helped each other get back on our feet.” In addition to his academic commitments, Greg also volunteered at A.I. DuPont Hospital for two summers. He played football all four years for Archmere, earning Academic All-State both varsity years. He also ran winter track, was varsity for four years, and was the captain for the last two. Greg received the Edward T. Doyle Scholar Athlete Award for football and the Coaches Award for track. After playing baseball for three years, he decided to switch to rugby for his senior year and was part of the squad that won the state 15s title, and became the state, regional, and eventual national champions for 7s. Greg left his classmates with his favorite piece of advice and powerful closing remarks: β€œWe might stumble ever so often, but it’s important to get back up, to persevere, and to work harder to try and make that next attempt a success. It’s not easy, but we’ve made it this far together and can continue to do so with each other and new friends we will make along the way. So to the Class of 2016, I urge you to go out and build your own legacy.” Accepted β€œearly action” into his first choice, Princeton University, Greg plans to major in Computer Science and minor in Engineering Physics, Finance, and Statistics. This summer, he interned with David Hogan ’87

Gregory ’16 and his brother Christopher ’11 are the only Archmere siblings to both be named Valedictorian. Christopher attended Princeton and graduated in 2015 with a degree in Operations Research Engineering. Gregory will be attending Princeton this year and will be studying Computer Science Engineering.

at Springleaf Financial, with whom he was paired for Senior Career Day, working in computer science as analytics in preparation for college. He plans to play rugby and varsity sprint football (football with a weight limit) at the collegiate level as well after having a great time this past year with the teams. Lastly, he plans to join in community service and campus ministry to continue his faith journey and help people around the area. 17

Outstanding Seniors Class of 2016 Salutatorian, Rahul Subbaraya With his eyes set on Business, Rahul Subbaraya, Archmere Academy’s 2016 Salutatorian, is looking forward to attending the University of Pennsylvania this fall. At Archmere, Rahul enrolled in twelve AP classes and was involved in Student Council, Science Olympiad, Math League, and the Academic Bowl, as well as Model UN and T.E.A.M.S. He also played soccer and tennis at Archmere. Recently in May, the U.S. Secretary of Education named Rahul a United States Presidential Scholar. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. The 160 U.S. Presidential Scholars were honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C. this summer. Rahul’s contributions to the Archmere community were recognized at Archmere’s Baccalaureate and Commencement when he received a medal in Mathematics and certificate in Science, awards for being a National Merit Finalist and Scholar and the winner of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal. Throughout his time at Archmere, Rahul always chose to challenge himself – academically, athletically, spiritually and socially. But for Rahul, it was not the academic challenge and preparation for college that highlighted his Archmere Academy experience; rather it was the theme of opportunity that he eloquently expressed. β€œWhat we, the Class of 2016, have done with those opportunities- it’s downright impressive. We have all participated in this community somehow and some way to grow as individuals. For me, the different activities I participated in helped me gain confidence in myself to achieve things I never thought possible. We have succeeded in so many different ways. We have the starting varsity quarterback who was a star in the school play. We have the leader of our state championship volleyball team captaining the Science Olympiad team. We have all taken advantage of what has been offered to us and created our own unique identities.” Rahul says he is particularly grateful for being prepared for life’s next adventure. During his Salutatory speech, he expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the commitment of his parents, teachers and college counselors, but singled out his classmates as having the greatest impact on him.

18

β€œIt’s not just opportunities we have found at Archmere. Here, I have found the greatest group of people you can find anywhere. I’m a Hindu, and I never really expected to find my place in a Catholic school. But I have never found a greater family, or a place where I felt more like I belonged. The friends I made here are ones that will stay with me for the rest of my life. But it's not just my friends I appreciated. I truly believe that I have learned something from each and every one of you. I learned from one of my close friends how important it is to laugh once in a while. Others taught me the importance of confidence. You all made me into a better person, and for that, I am grateful.” An example of how an Archmere education inspires students to distinction, there is no doubt Rahul will continue to shine in his college career at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Norbert Award Since 1973 Archmere has annually awarded the title of β€œAlumnus of the Year” to an outstanding alumnus who best represents Archmere’s mission. Saint Norbert Leadership Corps This June, fifteen students and three teachers traveled to St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI for the fourth year in a row to participate in the St. Norbert Leadership Corps. The program, designed by Archmere's administration in collaboration with St. Norbert College faculty, is centered on the model of leadership development exemplified by St. Norbert. It utilizes a Catholic values-based, experiential curriculum focused on building individuals

The focus of this year's trip was to try to come up with a project that would serve the needs of the Archmere community. Students are planning to implement a night of trivia and games at Archmere in hopes of giving students and teachers a chance to socialize and have fun while raising money for future leadership corps participants or local charities.

Archmere Students Spend Ten Days in Spain Sixteen Archmere students enjoyed a ten-day exchange program in Zaragoza, Spain over Spring Break. During their visit, they participated in the famously known Semana Santa traditions, and also joined in on a cultural and historical tour of both Barcelona and Madrid. During one of their tours the students were able to see first hand the second-most visited pilgrimage destination in Spain after Santiago de Compostela, the "Catedral Basilica de Nuestra SeΓ±ora del Pilar". World Language and Cultures Teachers SeΓ±orita MarΓa Calzado-Saavedra and SeΓ±ora Leah Lightcap accompanied the students. Archmere Hosts French Exchange Students In April, Archmere welcomed ten students and two teachers from our French Exchange program with the LycΓ©e Saint Vincent in Senlis, France. The group spent two weeks living with their American host families, attending classes and traveling the east coast. The group also connected with Auk Alums Phil Ryan ('15) and Nicole Kushner ('15) for tours of NYC and the University of Delaware. Some highlights of their trip included creating cups and developing film in art class, discovering gourmet delights such as cheesesteaks and cupcakes at the Reading Terminal Market, running the Rocky Steps, exploring the MoMA and attending Archmere’s SophFrosh Dance. The French students were thrilled to be part of the Archmere community, and we hope to reconnect with many of them next summer when we begin a new exchange cycle. French exchange students took in some of the sights around Philadelphia. They had a full day of visiting the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and Reading Terminal Market.

Summer Excursion to Alaska This summer, a group of Archmere students, supervised by Dr. Sharon Archer and Dr. Jennifer Christy, spent ten days in the most picturesque classroom: Alaska. The students hiked in various forest ecosystems, enjoyed boat rides to the world's largest population of sea otters and to whale watching locations, flew over the Copper River Delta on an airboat, explored glaciers, observed biodiversity such as bird colonies, and indulged in local culinary teats such as a Salmon BBQ. They were fortunate enough to experience some spectacular geological features, including huge ice chunks crashing into a river from a glacier. The itinerary also included visiting a sonar station and talking with researchers who collect data for fisheries management. During the excursion, the students were able to participate in an ongoing study and gather data for a local biologist. In addition to the abundant diversity of flora and fauna, students created long lasting friendships and made some unforgettable once in a lifetime memories!

As a Norbertine priest, one of the greatest privileges I have is to be able to teach Norbertine Spirituality to our Archmere students. The story of Norbert of Xanten, his conversion and founding of the Order of Premontre is both fascinating and important from religious and historical perspectives, especially for those of us who embrace or are somehow connected to and therefore carry on the Norbertine tradition.

Soon after the first Norbertines were professed on Christmas 1121, at Premontre, France, Norbertine communities quickly sprang up all over Europe. Today, Norbertine houses of priests, brothers and sisters can be found all over the world. Norbert,

Minister of Peace and Concord, defender of the Eucharist and champion of reconciliation, gave the world the great gift of this amazing charism. It is within the context of a desire to connect more deeply with Norbert and his unique message that 23 of us, largely from the Archmere and Daylesford Abbey communities, embarked on a Norbertine Heritage Tour this past June 12th Γ’€“ 24th. It was truly an amazing journey! We began in Prague, Czech Republic at the Norbertine Abbey of Strahov, with a Mass at Saint NorbertΓ’€™s tomb. To be honest, there are no words to adequately describe what it is like to literally be in the presence of our founder and patron saint. Humbling and inspiring are two words that immediately come to mind, but it is a surreal experience in every way. Over the next three days we experienced the beauty and marvelous history of this Abbey and the beautiful city of Prague. A hallmark of the Norbertine way of life is hospitality, and that was showered upon us in grand fashion

by the confreres of Strahov. We were

privileged to have with us for our three days in Prague Father Henry Jordanek, O.Praem. Father Henry is currently with us at Daylesford Abbey for an extended stay and he returned to his Abbey of Strahov to guide us during our days there. Father Henry took us to the Cathedral of Prague (Saint Vidas) for a private tour and the privileged opportunity to celebrate Mass in the Chapel of Saint Wenceslaus, Patron of the Czech Republic. A highlight for all was being hosted by the Norbertines to a picnic on the Abbey grounds overlooking the stunning panorama of Prague. Next, we motored to the Alpine city of Innsbruck, Austria to the Abbey of Wilten. Enroute we stopped for a lovely afternoon at our Abbey of Windberg in Germany. Once again, we experienced Norbertine hospitality at its finest. Abbot Herman Josef and the confreres welcomed us with a delightful lunch, tour of the Abbey Church with Frater Emmanuel and the celebration of Mass with Frater Paul assisting.

Once in Innsbruck, Father Patrick Busskamp, O.Praem. took over as our host and guide. We began our time at Wilten with a sumptuous meal, a tour of the Abbey and Mass in the gorgeous baroque Abbey church, with our own Abbot Richard Antonucci, O.Praem. presiding. While in Innsbruck we were fortunate enough to have fitting weather for a tram ride up into the Alps for lunch overlooking the city and the Brenner Pass into Italy…our next stop! On Sunday June 19th we once again boarded our comfortable motorcoach and took the long journey to Rome, the Eternal City, and locus of our Norbertine Generalate, the hub of our worldwide Community. The centerpiece of our time in Rome was the honor of

celebrating Mass in the Vatican at the Tomb of Saint Peter on June 21st. That entire day was spent in the Vatican, which included a tour of the scavi (archeological excavations under Saint Peter’s Basilica), the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. But our Mass at the Tomb of Saint Peter,

which began our day, was truly unforgettable…for all of us, but no doubt especially for our own Joyce and Carl Campion, whose 35th anniversary we anticipated by 5 days with a renewal of their wedding vows! After a farewell Mass at our Generalate and of course, partaking in lots of fine Italian cuisine (Mamma Mia!) our Heritage Tour drew to a close. We took with us many memories (will we ever forget chanting Morning Prayer and Vespers on the bus…or being greeted at breakfast in the Generalate by peacocks in the courtyard?), new and deepened friendships, but above all, a greater knowledge of and appreciation for Saint Norbert and the incredible legacy with which he blessed the world. I’ll close simply by saying that, while I’m always proud to be a Norbertine, I was never more proud than on this Heritage Tour. Our confreres in every location enfleshed hospitality, peace and concord. They treated us with generosity, and grace. Indeed, the Norbertine charism is alive and well. May we at Archmere continue to grow more deeply in that tradition and hand it on to the young men and women entrusted to our care. – Rev. John Zaggarella, O.Praem

can count our age on one hand standing amongst a field of rugby programs with decades-long legacies. No worries. Last year, in only its third season, the rugby team won state, regional, and national championship titles in rugby sevens. This year they did it again – plus add one fifteens state title in a decisive win over Salesianum. We’re running out of room for all the hardware. It didn’t matter that, at the ripe old age of four, every team they faced possessed a deeper history and more experience. Instead, the Archmere boys remained confident in each other, and confident in the system that we coaches had built for and with them. They played the game on their terms, with heart, integrity, and fierce resilience. So here we are, in the aftermath of the 2016 regular season and postseason tournament circuit, Archmere rugby boasts an 84% all time win percentage, scoring an average of 24 points per match while allowing an average of only 9 points defensively. Neither the pedigree, nor record of the opposition ever mattered much to the boys of Archmere rugby. The mission of the club has been and always will be to foster a passion for a sport that is built on teamwork, grit, resilience, and integrity. The goal is to develop those qualities in these players so that they might take those principles and apply them to their daily lives – humility, respect, and excellence both on and off the field. Senior captains Noah Niumataiwalu and Nick Udovich and coach David Niumataiwalu,

of positivity. Just as importantly, everyone bought in. When that happened, we reached the mythical peak that every team aspires to. As coaches, we could take any starting player off the field with the confidence that when his replacement stepped on, the team would not miss a beat. That has been the key to our success – plug anyone in, and know that he will give everything he has to get the job done because he believes in the team and the school. To me, Archmere is about opportunity: to develop talents, grow in faith, and pursue new passions. We are a school uniquely positioned to provide that to young men and women and I am grateful that this rugby program has been able to play a small part in that experience. This year was very special for the other coaches and I as it marked the exit of the founding class for Archmere rugby, the boys who were freshman during the inaugural season. True to the goal of the program, many graduating seniors will continue their rugby careers at a major collegiate program. Noah Niumataiwalu and Tanner McIlrath to St. Joseph’s University, Nick Udovich to West Chester, Alec Giakas to University of South Carolina, Colin Freeh to Navy, and Greg McCord to Princeton. As we wave goodbye to the seniors and look far ahead to next season, we know we’ll still be the new kids on the block, but we’ll still be hangin’ tough. The key difference is that now everyone knows that while we might be young, Archmere is the team to beat. These boys proved last year wasn’t just a fluke, and they have begun to forge a tradition of success. I’ll leave you with an anecdote that always brings me a (smug?) smile. As I was walking by another team’s camp at the regional championship tournament, I overheard a conversation between two coaches: β€œTough loss to Archmere there, eh?” β€œYeah, not really. Not when you consider you just lost to the best high school sevens program in the country.” – Drew Cocco ’04 - Director of Admissions, Archmere Rugby Coach

Varsity and Junior Varisty’s respective incredible final records of 12 - 3 and 13 - 0 fully demonstrated the benefits of teamwork, friendship, and practice. Through the hard work and dedication of the girls, both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams experienced one of their most successful seasons and proved that lacrosse isn’t just a sport for boys!

Overall, Girls Soccer owes it’s stellar record to it’s fantastic coaches and very talented players. Men’s Baseball This season’s Archmere Varsity baseball team consisted of the best super-players available to defeat evil. The players worked hard, training day and night to allow justice to prevail both on and off of the field. Thanks to the dedication of each and every player, the team made it to the state championships. Though the boy’s fought valiantly for the title, the team failed to win its quarter final game. However, the attitudes of the boys on the team and the friendship they shared managed to turn what seemed like a loss into a great victory to be remembered.

At 9:00 am, 2004 Archmere Academy graduate Carly Ciarrocchi greets millions of kids with a warm smile and her mop of curly black hair, side-by-side with a felt chicken named Chica, whose only vocalizations are the squeaky bleats of a kazoo. As co-host of Sprout’s Sunny Side Up, Carly sings songs, teaches crafts and celebrates birthdays alongside the now-iconic Chica the puppet during the show’s live broadcastβ€”all between episodes of children’s favorites such as Maya the Bee, Super Wings, and Lily’s Driftwood Bay. Carly debuted on Sunny Side Up in June of 2012, and today the show reaches more than 55 million homes nationwide. Carly’s dream started when she was eight years old and spotted an audition announcement for a community theatre production of Peter Pan in The News Journal.

After appearing in Archmere’s production of Godspell, she realized she wanted to pursue acting as a career. β€œWhen I made the decision to go to college to pursue theatre, I honestly didn’t know exactly where it would take me. I didn’t have a clear focus like β€˜I want to be a Broadway star!’ or β€˜I want to star in a movie!’ I think I just knew I wanted to continue to chase the very specific and very awesome feeling of making something with a group of creative people that gets performed for other people to enjoy and be entertained or provoked by.” This spring, Sunny Side Up received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Series. What makes the show, and it’s hosts, unique in the industry, is that they make around 250 hours of content a yearand do it LIVE- unlike any other show out there.

Alumni Spotlight β€œI love creating my own content. I get to try new things all the time, I get to repeat and expand characters and sketches that I like, and on the flip side of that, I get to start the next day fresh if something doesn’t go quite as we had planned.” Carly admitted to DelmarvaLife this year that she feels very honored to share mornings with families all over the country and help her viewers set a tone for their day. β€œβ€¦Since we are live, we get to interact with our audience in realtime via our website, and I absolutely love hearing what our audience has to say about whatever theme we are celebrating on a given week. I suppose my least favorite part of the job is the early call-time. But honestly, I’m a morning person, so that’s not even that bad!” In addition to acting, Carly has trained in improv at iO and at the Second City Conservatory, but also studied clown and physical theater with Chicago’s infamous 500 Clown, Paola Coletto, Avner the Eccentric and Eric Davis, and abroad in Dublin with Philippe Gaulier. After being hired by Archmere graduate Tamara Nolte ’99, Carly also spent four years working in Early Childhood Education with Bubbles Academy, an enrichment center for children ages six and under, where she taught after-school yoga, preschool prep, music, creative movement and even a superheroes class. All six of Carly’s siblings went through Archmere and many of them were there at the same time. She has great memories from high school

James Peter Tosi and his wife, Liza, arrived on the Archmere scene as parents in the fall of 1999, when their daughter, Jamie enrolled as a freshman, and their son, Alex, started as a freshman in 2003. Though Jim is not a graduate of Archmere, his two brothers, Anthony Michael ’63 and John ’66 were graduates, and his father, John, coached football at Archmere

Following in his father’s footsteps, Jim was invited to coach football at Archmere in 1985 and he remained on the athletic staff until 1988, when he began coaching football at Mount Pleasant High School, where he was working as a counselor and teacher. He rejoined Archmere’s football program as an assistant coach from 2007 to 2011, contributing his time and talent to the JV and Varsity programs.

2015-16 Honor Roll of Donors

38

Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees Dear Friends of Archmere, I am pleased to present the 2015-2016 Archmere Academy Honor Roll of Donors. Archmere’s success continues to depend upon a collaboration of individuals and families who contribute their time, talent, and financial resources to the ongoing operations of the school. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I thank everyone who supports Archmere for your ongoing commitment. Your support is a direct investment in our students and their futures. Like all independent schools, tuition revenue alone does not allow Archmere to accomplish its mission of cultivating empathetic leaders – young men and women prepared for every good work. Annual giving is crucial to ensuring the Archmere experience we treasure so dearly. Your gifts directly support the people and programs that make Archmere such a special place – premiere academics, small classes, advanced technology, athletics, and visual/performing arts as well as our scholarship and financial aid programs. While our Archmere Fund dollars raised and our endowment returns have increased each year in recent years, unfortunately our families’ demonstrated financial need has also increased, as have operating expenses directly related to maintaining an excellent faculty and staff. As I am sure you are aware, we are in the midst of a major campaign for the long overdue improvements to Saint Norbert Hall. As part of that Comprehensive Campaign, we have also raised approximately $1.6 million to expand the Archmere endowment fund, and approximately $5 million in support of the $8.5 million goal for the renovations of Saint Norbert Hall. We began this campaign initially by speaking to some of our leadership donors and community foundations, and recently launched our public campaign in April of this year. If you have not already made your own gift, we ask that you consider making a financial commitment at a level appropriate for you and your family. No gift is too small, and all gifts are important to the fundraising effort. We MUST have a high level of participation from members of the Archmere community in order to demonstrate commitment to other donors, particularly foundations, who have been generous to Archmere in the past. Foundations will look to the school community’s level of participation before making an additional significant contribution to the project. Our success is due to the time, commitment, and dedication shown by an army of volunteers - parents, alumni, trustees, teachers, administrators, and other friends of Archmere. You have made this possible. Thank you! In particular I’d like to thank Anne Buckley PP ’04, ’09, ’11, ’16, Bill Mock CP ’17, and John Nowaczyk ’87, CP ’18, for their tremendous leadership of the Mothers’ Guild, Fathers’ Club, and Alumni Association, which resulted in yet another successful fundraising year. Further, I am pleased to announce that B. Christopher Dougherty ’85 will assume the 2016-2017 role of Advancement Committee Chair for the Board of Trustees. Chris is a very engaged volunteer and member of the Board, and together with the Office of Institutional Advancement staff, we are looking forward to working with him to meet the ambitious goals of this next fiscal year. On behalf of the Board of Trustees with gratitude and faithfully in St. Norbert,

John S. Gerard, PP ’10, ’13 Board Chair 39

2015-2016 Annual Giving Thank You for Your Support! Annual giving is the most important fundraising that Archmere undertakes each year because donations are immediately put to use to support the schoolΓ’€™s operating budget and benefit our students during the academic year. Like all independent schools, Archmere relies on the generosity of our community to ensure the premiere educational experience we are so proud to offer. We are grateful to all our parents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and friends who contributed to annual giving at Archmere this year.

Transforming the Heart of Archmere St. Norbert Hall is home to a majority of Archmere’s academic departments, as well as the Immaculate Conception Oratory and Spirituality Center, and is the heart of Archmere. A renewed and updated St. Norbert Hall is central to Archmere’s mission and educationally sound and cost-effective.

Renovation of St. Norbert Hall Creates flexible, modern, aesthetically pleasing learning spaces: β€’ The centerpiece of the renovation is a Library and Learning Commons created from the former library space to facilitate interdisciplinary studies, discovery-based learning, analytical problem solving and research. β€’ Redesigned and additional flexible classrooms, clustered by discipline. β€’ Student study lounges and independent learning spaces on all floors to provide dedicated environments for collaborative or individual research and preparation.

Addresses building accessibility, efficiency and infrastructure: β€’ Making St. Norbert Hall ADA compliant, with ramp access from designated parking areas and elevator access to all three floors. β€’ Improving the building’s HVAC system’s efficiency by upgrading the heating system, adding central air conditioning and enhanced motion-activated lighting. β€’ Upgrading electrical, plumbing, communication infrastructure and life safety and fire suppression systems. β€’ Replacing the 30-year-old roof, and refurbishing windows and doors to gain better energy efficiency and enhance the building’s aesthetics. Archmere inspires students to challenge themselves, take learning risks and reach their greatest potential, united as a community and β€œprepared for every good work.” Your commitment to support the renovation of St. Norbert Hall is key to Archmere’s fiscal stability and project success and is essential for current and future generations of Auks. Please consider a tax-deductible gift or pledge today and respond with zeal. For information about gift naming and recognition opportunities, as well as endowment or scholarship giving, contact Katherine Ball-Weir, CFRE, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 302-798-6632 Ext 857.
