ABOUT MANWA

In its endeavor to achieve vision 2030, the government of Kenya through Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) commissioned a sports academy. The academy was to be a talent development hub to the nation.

As a landscape architect at Fine Landscapes, Manwa assisted in the formulation of the ideas leading to the development of a masterplan. The project was then phased to help progress with the available budget allocation. The landscape architect proceeded to provide the necessary plans, details and specification for the implementation of the work.

The proposal was designed to provide a landscape treatment that complements the space as a functional and yet aesthetic sports institution. The landscape proposal is ecologically and environmentally sensitive incorporating the use of native plants and tree species along with materials appropriate to the region with minimal introduction of exotic species.

Full landscape services including concept master planning, master and scheme design, planting design, design development, construction documentation with specifications and project administration and site supervision, currently ongoing.

Process

Project Definition:

Upon consulting us, we worked together with the client to outline project objectives and prepare a preliminary description of the program elements. The resulting program and project schedule established the anticipated timing of future milestones, our responsibilities and delivery dates.

Site Inventory and Analysis:

Our team performed physical and qualitative analysis to determine development opportunities and project feasibility. We documented the topography, vegetation, environmental, historic and geological features along with surrounding adjacent land uses to assess opportunities and constraints related to the development.

Concept Design:

We generated concepts to establish a vision for development and locations for project elements. Site suitability, capacity studies, preliminary phasing plans and preliminary quantity allocations relative to site infrastructure and special features were produced.

Process

Preliminary Site Plan: Based on program input, financial recommendations and feedback from consultation meetings we were able to refine site plans; economic models, character sketches and coordinate them into a cohesive design package.

Illustrative Master Plan:

The project continued to evolve with a greater level of emphasis on the specifics necessary to create an overall successful work. The illustrative master plan detailed the location and characteristics of proposed design elements of the sports academy and their treatment. The assembled Master Plan report detailed spatial use types, product densities, sketches, character images and architectural theme. Phasing plans, models, and large scale plans of specific development areas were also prepared. A summary of the project and financial reports accompanied these documents.

Process

Approvals:

Once the Master Plan was completed, the project team assembled and prepared the various applications required for government and municipal approvals, inclusive of an Environmental Assessment. Also required, were site specific documentation addressing spatial use and code compliance. Contribution from Architects, Engineers, Landscape Architects, Environmental and Geological consultants ensured the success of this stage. Once approval process was through, detailed design phases commenced.

Detail Design:

Once the funding was in place, the project was developed further in a series of detailed design phases. Site design, architectural design and engineering design commenced for initial phases, consisting of schematic design, design development and construction documentation.
