With a great passion for exploration, I love walking in cities to experience cultures; and architecture is a clear lake for me to immerse in the atmosphere of a city. If you see me walking on the street, why not join me and take me to some secret spots on your list? Learning from diverse perspectives always touches my nerve of curiosity, while motivating me to grow. Applying multiple materials or ways in drawings and modelings, I constantly seize opportunities that will broaden my horizon. And that is my approach towards design and architecture.

Turquoise-browed motmot is the bird to protects the egg by laying it under the ground deep enough to keep it from rolling away, a so-called scrape nest. Instead of going up, motmot goes underground to breed its offspring and escape predators. So as for us, humans. Some people believe that an underground city or structure is more secure for living or hiding.

CAMDM is the project to continue the ambiance of the park from Central Library and Papa John Sculpture park in Desmoines. It provides a liftup roof connecting to the ground for people to easily and freely accessible without any disruption.

CAMDM is also a shell for people to meet up and extend the park’s environment during unsuitable weather. The glass facade blurs the indoor and outdoor boundary, generating a pavilion under the shell. The staircase with string installation connecting the roof can only be accessed from the underground floor, attracting people to experience the contrast between the underground museum and an open atmosphere roof.

Cup nest is the style for most smaller-sized birds, such as hummingbirds. Its height helps the bird escape from predators, and the stiffness of the nest structure helps it stand under rain or the heavy wind blow. This is also the strategy, building up, for the human to structure our city. These people were concerned about the insecurity and losing direction of living underground without sunlight.

Chelsea is the most densely populated county in Manhattan, described as the economic and cultural center of the United States. Being one of the most popular attractions in New York, Chelsea fulfills with galleries inviting people to immerse in art. However, to be a place filled with tourists, local people are more considerate about their privacy. In our theory, the reaction of creating social norms and boundaries happens between local people and tourists and between local people themselves.

32

Chelsea Apartment and Library is a project attempt to weave the space and atmosphere to diffuse the social norm between private and public space. We thought urbanization made the city cold as steel; we thought the social norm made people impassive, but nothing happened. Chelsea is vigorous, and people are enthusiastic during our trip and interview. Therefore, creating a circumstance to give people a chance to engage each other with certain privacy in public becomes our goal.

33

34

The word “Diffuse” is a process of spreading out gradually. Our team tried to reveal the process of diffusing through manipulating nature elements and artifacts. Each row of cubes also represents a relationship in different scales: cities, blocks, streets, buildings, and people.

35

Chelsea Apartment & Library includes a park in between and the “Library of Babel Tower” connecting three major spaces. The building was fully open during the daytime and functioned as a public facility with opening hours. During the closing time, the door of Babel Library only authorized the resident to access, privatizing the library and park.

Unlike most birds, cavity-nesting birds don’t create elaborate nests from raw materials; they shelter in crevices that they find or create. It’s also the easiest way to find a place to live, the most efficient way to prevent predators, and the best idea to live under severe weather. However, if they lose the place, it requires birds more time than others to build or to found, which means they also lack the flexibility of living, totally relying on the environment, trees.

Windsor Heights is located west of Des Moines, one of the first residential areas transformed from mining and farmland. As a place fill with single houses, Windsor Heights doesn’t own public transportation. With the scenario “What if Iowa State government prohibits the carbon emission machine”, we provide a new transportation system and ward design.

48

49

•Drone Uber: It’s a public transportation system that gradually transforms the ward from 2020. The process requires drone towers to transition between and remodel after the transportation system gets sophisticated. The mothership will be input at the end of the transformation process to maximize user efficiency and minimize the energy waste ac cording to the CAS, complex adapt system.

•Released ground: We design an open surface without lanes through swarm behavior for walking or ultralight vehicles, such as bikes, skateboards, or delivery robots, trying to create street life and community atmosphere rather than a city.

50

51

AND ITS MOTHERSHIP

Drone is installed a self-organization system triggering in a certain condition such as leaving mothership by itself looking for the one with higher flow rate when a certain number of the drone is parking.

Drone has a degree of freedom to travel between buildings according to its safety distance rule, which allows them to have the ability to adapt to different situations in order to provide the best routes.

Safety distance in all directions depends on the speed of the drone rather than the traditional XY axis. Faster speed is with a larger safety distance that maximizes the efficiency according to conditions.

52

MOTHERSHIP GRID

MOTHERSHIP

The mothership has a default pattern for responding own region based on data landscape every period, which also maximizes the efficiency of distance for the drone to serve people. If the flow rate overloads for a mothership, the near one with the lowest flow rate moves out from its zone for support. The empty zone will be divided into several parts executed by motherships around it.

The collection of trace and location information will be synthesized with other factors to shape the fitness landscape. The fitness landscape data is the information to readjust the pattern and quantity of motherships, which means the system can evolve and adapt to the change of the urban environment.
