Art and Music have for centuries been used to indulge the senses and have also been very vital modes of expression which have been proven to be sometimes more effective than communiating even with words. In recent years there has been further exploration into art and musics benefits towards mental health and this project was designed to explore what a purpose built art & music therapy facility could be. The goal was to depict how architecture and design can be harnessed to create an environment for these methods of therapy to be more successful and more widely adopted, as well as for art and music to be applied more intentionally.

Whats Next?
How can art and music add more value to the society? Glasgow is already greatly celebrated for its art and music scene, however it stands the risk of oversaturating its cultural scene with the emergence of more traditional art and music venues. This project aims to add a new dimension to Glasgows art and music identity by applying them in a more intentionally directed manner to improve the mental health of the society, while still aligning with the art and music identity of the city.
Addressing Social Issues Art & Music Masking Social Issues Glasgow over the years has faced high rates of income inequality, poverty, alcohol and drug abuse as well as a high mortality rate. All these factors amongst others, contribute to the potential for a high number of the population to be dealing with mental issues. Art and music have been widely researched to have great potential as a treatment for mental health issues such as:

Daily Patient has daily scheduled therapy sessions as determined at the start of each week. In addition to therapy sessions, patients will also be enrolled in teaching sessions where they will learn the fundamentals of art and music.

The selected is the area within the Barrowland region of Glasgow, one which has over the years morphed from a commercial charater to a more creatively driven quarter, with the presence of the barrowland ballroom as a thriving music venue, and the barras art and design district drawing in artistic and musical talent from all over Glasgow. The total area of the chosen site is about 27,000m2,and is a favourable location considering its close proximity to a public transport hub as well as also being a seclued / empty quarter, making it suitable for the Centre for Art and Music Therapy which will require noise and access control.

5 Using nature as circultation

Good mental health
Nature plays a critical role because it has extremely positive effects towards mental health and it is important to harness it, with the aim being that art and music alongside it will benefit the patient far more than art and music alone. Nature can also be a very vital source of inspiration to the patients, for example the vibrant and diverse colours of different flowers could influence what colors the patients choose to use in their art. Another example could be for music, where the sounds of birds and outdoor sounds could spark a thought of melodies and rhythms in the patients minds which they could be reference when creating their music. Creativity and serenity are vital for art and music therapy to be effective, and nature will help the overall architecture to achieve this spatial/environmental requirement. By separating the buildings and spaces, people must transition through the outdoor realm to reach various areas of the facility, and as they do so they can subconsciously benefit from being within nature and biodiversity, every single day.

Starts with (a) a small space where a staff member will regulate the number of people entering the Zen garden (b), to avoid congestion and ensure the psychological effectiveness of the space, which then transitions into the main lobby (c)
The building where patients will reside during their stay, with a library and communal corridors for interaction.

A gym is also included as physical fitness has been proven to improve mental health and this will be used as a supplementary treatment for patients with trainers. This is the primary stairway leading to the facility from the barras, harnessing the topography to create a stairway that doubles as a recreational area with seating zones and sculpture exhibition podiums, where artists working within the barras can put their works on public display.

Incorporating Art & Music Elements
Rhythm It is important that the internal spaces are tailored for art and music therapy activities, however this is an obvious requirement. To take the influence of art and music step further, elements present in both can be intergrated into the archtiectural design to create a subconscious connections for patients. For example the element of rhythm can be intergrated to give patients an idea of understanding angles and perspectives, so that when they create art they intuitively apply this technique. Another example could be integrating repetition and pattern into the architecture to give patients a subconsious understanding of repetition and pattern in music.

Art Therapy Zone
This is where art therapy would take place, primarily in groups of 5, there are separate spaces for patients who may require one to one therapy. The premise is that by having sessions in groups, patients will be able to interact while creating and learning, which can help reduce any intimidation towards creating art.

Group sessions also benefits the therapist as they can teach and conduct sessions with multiple people simultaneously, making it easier to manage their schedule.
Interactive boards which can be used as a canvas for therapists to demonstrate techniques and display tasks, or as a teaching resource to show instructional / educative material.
‘U’ shaped high tables allows therapist to easily interact with patients by pivoting from the center without having to walk around the outer perimeter.
These tables are lower and can accommodate wheelchair and mobility restricted users.

The load bearing glulam column 300x300mm sits on a raised baseplate to protect it from any possible water damage from below. The flitch plate then secures the connection using bolts or dowels and the baseplate is connected to the foundation using holding down bolts.
Beam to column connection Flitch Plates
The flitch plate is hidden within the timber beam and face-fixed to the supporting column/ beam. They are connected through the timber and steel plate with bolts or dowels. Each plate is lined with fire resistant strips to avoid failure of the connections in the event of fire.

Thesis Project (Yr 2) Reflective Statement
This project reflects my vision of a curated environment where architecture,urban, and landscape design have come together for art and music to be created, and through it for people to find healing. Behind the bright lights and colors of Glasgows art and music scene, lies a demographic that these venues do not serve and cannot cater to due to mental health issues and poverty amongst other causes, and this projects explores a new application of art and music where these mediums are more intentionally used to improve peoples lives. The powers of art and music to bring relief and joy have long been expressed by artists and musicians, but people who feel they are not talented enough have long ignored these benefits, and this facility is not intended to teach people how to develop these talents but rather teach them to embrace these forms of expression, that through it they learn to find relief as opposed to reverting to self harming devices such as drugs and alcohol to say the least. I myself have found much peace and relief in the creation and consumption of art and music and as an architecture student, i felt compelled to investigate this topic in more depth through architecture and create my vision of what such a place could be.

The Barras exists today as a home for multiple small businesses with budding creative spaces, however these all operate independently and give the Barras a fragmented nature.
The Spine showcases a clear linear North to South trail with the various spaces and activities vistors would be able to experience along the trail. The concentration of activities within the Barras area corresponds with our strategy to culturally regenerate the Barras and make it a diverse and vibrant public and creative hub.

The Spine as a design intervention aims to create a more cohesive Barras experience by connecting these fragments and harnessing vacant areas to introduce activities that interrelate and embrace the creative direction which the region is heading towards.

Urban Design Project 2 (Yr 2) Background & Intent
The Barras then Street Traders in the 19th century were to be found in various places in Glasgow with hired out barrows. Many sold their goods through streets but some places in had a larger, congregated number of streets trades such as Calton, Gorbals and more notably Saltmarket / Bridgegate area. The end of WW1 saw an increase in volume of pedestrians on city streets along with more street trades. Street trading at the time was being discouraged by authorities but to no success. In 1923 Maggie McIver who owned a barrow hire business in Marshall Lane in Calton began organising trade markets on waste ground in the Kent Street area. The weekly market, commonly known as the “Barras” became one of Glasgow’s most famous institutions The popularity of the Barrras in Calton has largely decreased throughout the years. Today it is no longer the same market it once was with less visitors every year. Attempts are being made to regenerate the area with new master plans set in 2015 while the area still largely remains untouched in 2021.

The Barras today The original Barrowland Ballroom was built by the founder Maggie McIver and opened in 1934. The building includes a large hall that may be used for weekend markets with a sizeable weatherproof hall above. The building was destroyed by fire in 1960’s and re-built though the only remaining item was the cartwheel from the original neon sign. More notably the Ballroom has become a major concert venue with some of the greatest names in musical history who played here, such as; David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Oasis.

The stepped typology also capitalises on the predominant after noon sunlight which ensures as much as possible that the buildings do not obstruct each other especially during the winter months when heat gains are favouable. Private gardens are also a strong focus point within the design which allows users to experience a familiar situation as they would in terraced housing with entries in front and gardens behind. This has been implemented both on ground and in units aboube ground to ensure that all users have some degree of outdoor space, and it also creates the allowance for users to either use their outdoor spaces for gardening or recreational activities, which with the added close proximity to eachother can facilitate safe and socially distanced interactions among homeowners.

This provides an apartment space with added functionality and configurability, as well as privacy. These spaces were partially also inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic upon evaluating the impact of impacts of isolation and lockdowns to housing, which was that people had to transform their homes to accomodate activities which were traditionally done outside the home. The figures to the right illustrate some options as to how the spaces can be configured.

Urban Design Project (Yr 1) Strategies A part of our concept was creating a link to the existing Florrie building and creating links to the currently inaccessible lower area. These areas are connected via a large public courtyard.

Important connections are created at the lower sides of thesite, connecting the site to the city centre. A series of ramps now create much needed route between the lower and upper areas.

Urban Design Project - Individual Elaboration (Yr 1) Background & Intent
Toxteth Makers Village In the group portion of this assignment, my group took a total overhaul approach and created an entirely new urban design scheme, primarily addressing the urban layout and circulation. For this individual portion, my strategy was to reintroduce the Toxteth/Dingle aesthetic character back into the urban design scheme, im order to create a balanced experience for users, balanced in the sense that although they will be interacting with an entirely new urban space, this urban space will not be alien to them visually through the implementation of familiar materials such as brick, stone, wood and steel, materials which have been used in a monotonous manner but now applied in more unconventional ways within this urban development. The image to the right represents how brick and stone have been used in the area in various styles and showcases how they can be used to simultaneuously create visual diversity and harmony.

Toxteth Beacon Vertical Wind Turbine A Nod to History
Reinvented for the future A conceptual vertical wind turbine with multiple lightweight turbines stacked on top of eachother, potentially generating far more power than the conventional strategy. A beacon that attracts people to the site from a distance metaphorically reflects a society that never stops moving and progressing.

Toxteth Appren�ce School This school spawns from the recoginiton of toxteths industrial past, where the area was once booming with skilled ar�sans and workers. Due to technology, these workers are no longer required for their skills and as a result they do not get passed down to future genera�ons. The toxteth appren�ce school allows these workers to teach young people vital skills and cra�smanship, providing employment and jobs for both the young and old. Also these same individuals are allocated shops along the ground level (Makers Lane), to allow them to sell their goods and earn an income.

Specialist Study
This study is an exploration of how and whether architecture and social agendas intertwined, based on the works and ideologies of world renowned architect Sir David Adjaye who, a man of Ghanian-British descent (Adjaye Associates 2020). He is the founder and principal of the Adjaye Associates architecture practice which has several studios in Accra, London and New York, with his works earning him the RIBA Gold Medal in autumn of 2020, thereby etching him into history as the first Black architect to receive the award. In an interview with Marcus Fairs for Dezeen Magazine (Fairs 2015), Adjaye declares that in the architecture works of his firm “There has to be a social agenda”. This study investigates what exactly these social agendas are and how they can be addressed successfullythrough architecture, through comparisons with works of two additional architects who share similar sentiments towards creating architecture that addresses social needs and agendas, with a focus on the African context.
