Edge of Dee Year 2 Thesis Design Project Chester Chester was once an important trading port before Port of Liverpool was established. Trading in the past took place through River Dee which connects people from around the world. As time passes, the city is no longer a trading city but developed into an industrial cities alongside Manchester and Liverpool.

River Dee is an important part of Chester that helps develop the city to what it is today. At one part of the river, it has become a leisure park alongside the riverbank complete with paved promenade and cafes. This gives an inspiration to develop the underused part of the historical riverbank into a hospitality destination for locals and tourists. The proposed scheme is aimed to explore the hospitality industry and encourage usage of public realm. Through different means of exploration, the scheme is to enhance the landscape of Chester while serving the tourism industry in the city.

DESIGN Brief Following the goals of the masterplan, the main aim of the thesis project is to attract people to use the underused space that has great potential to be developed. Upon doing site analysis, it is found that the site location can be considered as a hidden gem with its strategic location and views towards the river and city centre. In the original masterplan, the proposed function on site was retail buildings. However, it is thought that a hotel is more efficient in attracting people to use the space. The location of site that is located next to the river gives a great natural advantage to develop a hospitality function on site. It is also proposed to reopen the underused viaducts that also has a great view towards the Chester Racecourse.

The hotel that is being built is a boutique hotel that is thought to serve the purpose for businessmen and leisure-lover.

The feature of the hotel is for some of the rooms to overlook the racecourse, Chester city centre and view of river/golf course. In order to attract more people to the site, the hotel block must be designed with public realm in mind, where the public spaces surrounding the building must be public-friendly whether it be for sports or leisure. Not just focusing on the from internal space design but also integration with the external environment, the hotel is to be a place for retreat for the guests with intimate and cosy atmosphere.

DESIGN STRATEGY

01 Buffer Zone Taking into consideration of the possible noise from train track, a garden or pubic space is to be established to act as a buffer from the noise. To ensure noise impact is minimised, the footprint of the building is also to be away from the train track.

Riverside Relationship

The scheme should not block the existing pedestrian route by the river The circulation is to be designed for the public as well as the users of the hotels and can be achieve by integrating the public realm with the building block through different openings.

One of the main aim of the masterplan is to appreciate the River Dee as the main component of the city. Hence, the scheme should maximise this advantage of view towards the river. The building is to be orientated along the riverside to allow more rooms to face River Dee.

Hotel rooms are to be away from train track to minimize noise.

SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP To ensure a working flow of programme throughout the building, a study of the spatial relationship between programmes in the building were done. A rough schedule of accommodation were done to understand the importance of a space and their relative size. Private, public and semi-public spaces were determined to see the connection between spaces and establish level of accessibility. The study of spatial relationship were not only done in horizontal circulation but also at vertical spatial circulation.

As the area on the north side is more accessible, important public amenities such as lobby and restaurants is to be located. Whereas on the south part of the building, other programmes such as event spaces and recreation spaces is to be placed.

MASSING STUDY Massing studies were done to get a sense of place of the building in relation to surrounding context. Massing block studies were done by initially creating different ‘blocks’ of programmes and were put on top of each other. To create an asymmetric effect, the rooms on different levels were randomly ‘pushed’ and ‘pulled’. As a result, the initial massing studies gives off a distinct stacking effect throughout the whole building.

From precedent study, the concept of allowing public to passes through at different point of the building were adapted. An opening were done in the middle of the building to bring people across from the garden to the river and vice versa. With a double-storey arch, the hotel seems to consists of two different blocks on the ground level.

River Dee Station Development Year 2 Group Urban Design Chester Initially, a site analysis was done on Chester to understand the opportunities the city has along with other contraints. After the analysis was done, the initial idea was to bring back the glory of RIver of Dee as it was once before. The initial concept proposal was to appreciate River Dee as an asset for Chester, to encourage cultural diversity and reactivate connection between west of Chester to the city centre. The site is chosen for its connection between the Chester industrial area and the historic city centre. Several precedent studies were done and the site was categorized into several zones to strategically divide the area. The final proposed masterplan consists of several programmes that is also defined by plazas. Generally, the scheme is proposed to interconnect the historical city of Chester and natual surroundings through social interaction in the community.

Chester is a town located under Cheshire West and Chester in Cheshire county in North West England. Located on the River Dee, near the border of Wales.

According to 2011 Census, Chester has a population of 79,645 that makes it the second largest settlement in Cheshire after Warrington. It is also the largest settlement of Cheshire West and Chester, serves as the unitary authority’s administrative headquarters. Once voted as one of Europe’s prettiest cities, Chester is well-known for its historical background and beautiful ancient architecture that attracts visitors from around the world.

As the city was established during Roman ages, the remains such as city walls, bridges and amphitheatre makes up a character and shaped the city as it is today. It is also strategically located with direct motorways towards main cities such as Liverpool and Manchester.

The Callister Trust Garden Pavillion Year 2 Management and Practice Law Birkenhead The Management & Practice Law is a module that allows students to do a real project with a client group (Live Projects). This allows students to become more familiar with the initial stages in building design management and architectural practice. For the Live Project, the client is The Callister Trust which is a local charity body in Birkenhead that promotes the welfare of young women and empower them through community education and training. They require a high quality pavillion to be built on their garden on Slatey Road, Birkenhead. The pavillion is to act as a community space for girls and young women in Birkenhead that can be used all year round. As a charity body, they organises a variety of activities to bring the community together, hence the need for a conducive activity space.

Site Introduction

The Callister Trust Garden is located on Slatey Road, Birkenhead with Victorian wall along the side. The site has an area of approximately 2,000sqm with a mix of natural and hard landscape. Previously the garden features a pavilion (which was then replaced with a portacabin) and a tennis court. The site is generally an even ground which slopes towards the entrance on Slatey Road. A three storey private property and local council housing sit on either side of the garden. The main access to the garden is from Slatey Road with a possible secondary access from housing on Devonshire Cl.

Design Proposal

The Callister Trust Garden Pavilion is a proposal for a single-story indoor space to be built on the garden space owned by the trust. The project consists of two ‘blocks’ that separates the facilities from the main block. The main block consists of a main volume that can be used for indoor activities up to 30 people and a small kitchen that can be used for food preparation. The facilities block houses two toilets with one for accessibility access and a storage room for gardening and outdoor equipment. Both of the blocks are connected by a covered terrace to shelter from rain and sun.

The north and west facades is to be fully glazed to gives a scenic views across the park from the pavilion and allow a maximum amount of sunlight into the pavilion. On the west of the pavilion, overhanging veranda can act as an extension to the indoor activity space or can be used on its own. All of the glazed walls are protected by perforated corten steel security panels that can be folded into one side during day time, giving views of the outdoor area.

All Mod-Cons Year 1 Architectural Design Project Everton Year 1 Architectural Design Project revolves around the housing crisis which includes financial, environmental, social and political issues. All Mod-Cons refers to housing with the most desirable features and intended to explore modularisation in affordable housing for mixed communities. The proposed project in Everton is a contemporary social housing that offers housing units with options of two bedrooms or one bedroom unit. With the basic neccessities and affordable price offered in each unit, it is perfect for a downsizing or small family and fresh graduates to rent the house. Taking into consideration the existing context, the housing consists of two-storeys apartment on one side to complement the existing terrace housing and five-storeys apartment on the West side to appreciate the view of Merseyside.

The design approach was done by determining entrance into the site from nearby car parking space as the main route that will be taken by residents. The intention was also to continue the footpath of Vesuvius place into the scheme to connect directly to Blackkeld Street.

Charles and Ray Eames: A Lifetime Collaboration Year 1 Specialist Study The topic chosen for Specialist Study dissertation is a study on architect(s) as furniture designer and the architect chosen is the pair Charles and Ray Eames. As one of the most influential designers in the twentieth century, their innovations in furniture design is thought to be worth studied on. Among the aspects that were being studied is on their design method, technology and materiality. With a different education background, it is interesting to evaluate on to what extent does their education practice influence each other in important design decision making. Apart from the personal and professional relationship with each other, the couple’s relationship with other fellow designers was also looked into. The specialist study mainly focuses on Charles and Ray Eames as furniture designer and the impact they have on the development of modern architecture.

Excerpt of Introduction

Charles and Ray Eames often mentioned as the pioneers of the post war modernism in America and among the most important designers of the twentieth century. Their risk taking personality to go out of the way in order to bring forward their style as modernists were proven to be successful in designer world. Although coming from two different backgrounds, they were able to evolve themselves as one unit to produce creative and great designs together.

Charles and Ray Eames started with a student-teacher relationship at Cranbrook before this developed to become a collaborative team alongside developing mutual affection towards one another. In 1940, Ray helped Charles to prepare models and drawings for a home furnishings competition he entered with Eero Saarinen for Museum of Modern Art, New York.

After they got married in 1941, Charles and Ray continued to work together by experimenting to produce a high-quality moulded plywood material as a continuation from the MoMA competition. From there, the couple managed to gain the attention of significant people in design world and continued to make iconic furniture. Their work of art does not limit to only home furnishing but expanded to films, exhibitions, toys and decorations, making them one of the most influential designers in 20th century.

Methodology

To obtain the objectives of the study, this will discuss the works by the couple and is divided into two main chapters that will be further divided into multiple sections. For the first chapter, the furniture works by designer couple, Charles and Ray Eames will be analysed by dividing into sections according to materials they have worked with. Not focusing only on the final output, their method and technology will also be evaluated as they are highly appreciated and referenced in the designer world. Incorporating different materials in their design such as moulded wood, wires, fiberglass and aluminium further analysis focusing on the design process of each materials will also be focused on. Although the couple has made numerous work such as films, exhibitions and sculptures, this study will only mainly focus on their furniture design as it is the most significant invention of the couple that makes them influential.

For the second chapter which focuses on relationships will be divided into personal, professional and partnership with others. Comparing architecture and art, usually one is more technical whereas the other is more decorative, making it interesting to evaluate on to what extent does their education practice influence each other in important design decision making. The relationship Eameses (the partnership) had with other fellow designers such as Eero Saarinen and their employees at Eames Offices will be analysed. Looking more than just direct collaborations, the study will also focus on other individuals that influenced the couple or who were influenced by the couple. Apart from establishing association with other designers, this study will also explore their collaboration with Herman Miller Furniture Company as the only authorised manufacturer and distributor of the couple’s works in America. Herman Miller’s principle and position especially in production and marketing aspect of their works will be particularly mentioned.

Conclusion

The importance of working together as a team is often neglected in current designing world. Often, designers see it as a working environment that will limit their own expression and style. However, looking at how Charles and Ray work with each other and other designers just proved that this is not the case. When Charles worked with Eero Saarinen in his younger days, it is thought that the collaboration was able to stimulate their design approaches and challenged each other to be better as opposed to when working alone.

Their collaboration not only address the issues of sharing ideas in designing but also concerns such as acknowledgement and woman’s role in partnership. It can be concluded that Charles indirectly played his role in both concerns when he always acknowledged his Ray’s work.

By working together, Charles and Ray developed their understanding of each other as time passes by but in the beginning, it was their passion for the work that brought them together.

However, as there is no definite role being defined in the partnership, the method might not work for everyone. Designers who wish to adapt their collaboration practice have to be selective and decide which ways work for them.

If there is one thing that their method can be adopted in present day it would be their method in experimenting through trial and error to get the design that they are satisfied with.

Just like what Eames Demetrios mentioned in one of his talks, “You want to learn how to make films? Go make a movie And you try something out ..”. It is only by doing something that you get to learn new things. They value the importance of design process and intent to make it something that can be easily understood by public. Charles and Ray studied their interest carefully and thought that by expressing it through design, it can enhance the lives of people.

Although Charles had an architecture background and Ray had a decorative and fine arts education, they managed to blend the two different field well and has inspired people around the world with their partnership. As their close friend, Ben Baldwin said, “The combination was an extraordinary one I don’t know of any other like it... of two designers who really contributed enormously to each other’s work, and they both had very strong gifts in different directions and yet somehow in the same direction.”

Ellesmere Port: Business Park Year 1 Group Urban Design Ellesmere Port Initially, urban analysis were done on selected site in Ellesmere Port by focusing on infrastructure and environment. It acts a preliminary process of urban design studies to understand relevant information that can be used in urban design project.

Through the urban analysis in Ellesmere Port, it is concluded that industrial and manufacturing sector are the major employer alongside service sector in the town. After identifying the main opportunity on site, it is decided to proposed a business park in the area due to its location which is in between the industrial sector and town centre, and its easy access to other cities through trains. The business park will then acts as control centre for Ellesmere Port with facilities such as retails, convention hall, hotel and offices that can be rented out.

Square As Path Year 1 Individual Urban Design Ellesmere Port Derived from the urban design project, a site is to be chosen to be developed further in its urban setting. The site chosen was in front of the proposed Ellesmere Port Train Station. The public space has a potential to be developed due its strategic location that will attract visitors and potential clients to come to Ellesmere Port. The proposal for the public space is to have seating areas. By having seating areas on ramps and on the square, it will allow people to have a buffer zone before they continue on with their journey towards the train station of the business park. Pedestrian paths towards the Central Square in the business park is visibly indicated. Cyclist routes were introduced as a continuation from the ramps on Station Square to allow a safer journey towards the canal.
