MASTERPLAN STRATEGY As the Ghent expo aim to invite everyone from across the world to look for greener ways of living, it will be encouraging participants to design structures for experimental housing which will serve as the temporary pavilions across the city park. The structures are made from lightweight materials and could potentially serve as building shells of the future developed housing buildings on its site.

Over to the dockland harbour, a more permanent experimental housing will be built to allow visitors to accommodate it and experience alternative way of living.

Mixed-used buildings The policy aims to ensures that the buildings will be multi-functional facilities. The ground floor of the proposed buildings will be accessible to the public during the day to allow permeability. Some of the uses for ground floor facilities include cafĂŠs, restaurants, shops and exhibition spaces. Upper floors will be used as residentials, office spaces and other commercial facilities. In terms of urban spaces, they will accommodate the expo event and become multi-functional in the future legacy accommodating festivals and cultural events to enhance and bring life to the waterfront, bringing the community and tourists together during and after the event.

WHY MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IN GHENT? As the masterplan strategies were to design the experimental housing of the expo and the housing after the expo will be used as the local people from Ghent to accommodate and solve the urban sprawl issues , further taking this opportunity to propose the mixed use development which will follow the masterplan strategy for social housing.

The proposed scheme will be designed in such way that the same design block can be placed anywhere in site and the function will be the same. the proposed scheme is a futuristic reflection in hand with the masterplan in short it can carry a legacy which will be beneficial for Ghent. As Ghent is facing over population issues so to accommodate there needs this development will be the key for solving urban sprawl in Ghent in upcoming years.

The proposed scheme will be a mixture of both traditional and modern prospect, as the main aim is to built for the people living or working there not designed as showpiece or a as modern furniture. It also aims to understand the needs of people using the scheme, green open spaces will be provided as both private and semi-private ,cycling facilities, well organised offices spaces ,daily need stores or shops so as to reduce the commuting of people so as to increase the walking and cycling opportunities.

Restaurants and cafes will add an extra advantage to the users.

GHENT and Urban Challenges Ghent has became the most livabe the period of time ,students ,individuals have started coming for knowlegede ,job opportunities etc.It has transformes over past years into urban living spaces then the industrial one .The upcoming challenges to accomodate new migrants have started creating urban sprawl

and more urban

challenges. New housing projects like OMA which will create thousands of new homes for the people in Ghent ,number of projects are being developed to tackle this issues and making Ghent City Livable city.

AMBITION The scheme intends to understand the urban challenges in Ghent, and by creating sustainable solutions for housing scheme.From the masterplan strategy to create experimental housing through expo further led to individual project.Aim is to create a urban block that can be constructed in any part of the site.The Mixed used development block designed will be experimental housing solution for Ghent.The proposed scheme will accomodate residents with creating job opportunities and public open spaces will generate healthy neighbourhood within.

STRUCTURAL AND FACADE STUDY Waffle slab in the proposed Gallery area will run the necessary services through the holes so they can run through slab depth and will effectvely provide gallery with aesthetic look.

Exposed concrete -Internal gallery walls will have exposed concrete finish ,a reliable material as well as any look can be customised with textures according to the requirements. Its also need less maintenance and occasional cleaning.Also, with advance techniques dramatic effects can be achieved.

Lightweight stone claddingThey are cost effective,moisture management,high resilency,light weight,fire safe,low maintainence.

Exposed Brick tiles- They are easy to intstall,cost effective,saves valuable space(additional interior spaces),lighrweight ,easy to maintain and are durable with variety of styles and colour,fire safe.

SIP Panels- They are energy effecient,stronger ,quieter,more air tight,which means less air leakge so fewer noise penetration,high insulation.Has less wastage,light weight,can have addtional floor spaces,design flexible and low labour cost.

Maximum green spaces and landscaping has been provided in order to keep the building naturally ventilated with fresh air through trees across the site.

Natural sunlight and evening light -Most of the building areas will be naturally lit nad will recieve evening sun and shading beause of the orientation of proposed plan

Building materials - The building materials used like natural stone cladding,brick cladding ,exposed concrete are durable ,sutainable,low maintainence,fire safe .

Under floor heating will be provided through the usable and essential areas throughout the buildings

Air ducts- Have been provided in order to keep areas with supply of fresh air and extract of hot air ,for spaces like kitchen where hot air from the kitchen will be extracted through the ducts supplying fresh air.

Rainwater collected from greens and roof will be filtered through service pipes will be reused for watering the site landscape and greywater will reduce water consumption

Residential units are east west facing,kitchen on the east will recieve morning light and othe living spaces with balconies will recieve evening suttle light Cross ventilation in the residesntial units wil help the natural air to flllow across the units keeping units naturally ventilated

Restaurant spill out area will be shaded due to residential block keeping it away from harsh afternnon light and will recieve suttle light

SOUTH FACING ELEVATION

Gallery area needs to be controlled under certain temperature as gallery area will have art work ,sculptures ,paintaings. In order to protect and have controlled temperature the ideal controlled heat maintaned should be between 65 to 75 degres f. Humidity control will be monitored aswell in order to keep art work neither to dry out or to get moist.Automatic controllers will be provided throughout the gallery area.Aswell as exposed concrete as interior finish can help naturally keeping the gallery cool.

INTRODUCTION

Ghent is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium.It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the second largest municipality in Belgium, after Antwerp. The city originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It is a port and university city.

TRACES FROM THE PAST The site has strong connections to its industrial heritage, with the site being the old port. In order to make its rich history live on, old cranes, tracks, mooring posts and other typical port elements within the site will be retained or given a new role within the scheme.The cranes once dominated the view of the old harbour dockland in the north-east of the city. Together with the port activities, they almost disappeared. Seven old cranes have since been renovated and installed within the harbour and now creates a stunning crane landscape.

SITE CONTEXT DISCONNECTED FROM THE CANAL Our chosen site is located on the north-east of Ghent that stretches around the Existing industrial activities block any access to the canal and reduces the site’s Houtdok, the Achterdok and the Handelsdok. It has strong connection to the visual value. rail line with the Gent-Dampoort located nearby. It has limited public transport connection and has no direct access from R40 route.

SITE LOCATION CULTURE IN GHENT CYCLING An immense cycling culture exists in Ghent like many of the Flemish cities.

Majority of people in all demographic in Ghent cycles to places, as part of the City’s contribution and promotion of sustainable living. It is known that the City plans to phase out cars in the next 10 years and promote public transport making Ghent a totally green city.

MUSIC Music is a big part of Ghent’s culture with many music festivals occuring throughout the year in different venues across the City.

FESTIVITIES AND EVENTS Ghent is a cultural city with mixture of rich history and funky events, exhibitions, festivals, theatre plays and concerts. There are many more festivities that occur during the year - the classical music Flanders Festival, Film Fest, the Six Days Cycling Race, Winter Festival and the Ghent Light Festival.

AMBITION GHENT EXPO 2030 For this scheme we are proposing a scenario the City of Ghent will host a world expo in 2030. We believe that a large scale event like an expo will not just benefit the neighbourhood of out chosen site, but also the City of Ghent, both economically, and environmentally, while regerating the site. With the site having strong connection to the Ghent-Ternezuene Canal, the expo will also relaunch the City as a European port powerhouse.

THEME OF THE EXPO We have decided to choose Experimental Solutions for Eco-housing as the theme of our expo. The expo aims to invite everyone from around the world to look at greener ways of living in the city.

LEGACY When the expo finishes, and all the temporary buildings are demolished, what the neighbourhood will be left with are the new infrastructure implemented as well as lots of sustainable housing developed which people can then move in to. The legacy aims to create a well connected city while tackling the housing crisis that exists within the area of the site as well as preventing urban sprawl.

3. STREET PATTERN & HIERARCHY

The inner city and the district of MuideMuelestede to the north consists predominantly of residential and mixedused buildings while the north-west side of the city and the site area consists predominantly of industrial buildings. Building heights across the City ranges from 6m - 20m. The tallest buildings or structures are located in the Dok Noord and Oude Dokken areas.

Ghent have curvelinear street pattern originated from the network of canals that helped form the City. The primary roads like the R40 as well as the railways have more heirarchy due their location or connectivity to other neighbourhoods or cities. The rest of the road networks have less heirarchy as they have less traffic intensities and they connect to the residential areas.

The landscape of Ghent consists of greenfield lands, pocket parks, green corridors and private green spaces. There is a great demand for more parks and open green spaces to be incorporated within the City, including a city park.

The inner city consists of medium to high dense residential areas. The Muide-Muelestede neighbourhood in the north consists of low dense residentials. The northwest consists of industrial buildings within the waterfront with some low dense residential within the inner neighbourhoods of the area. The site consists of mostly industrial buildings. The site has visual and historical value.

There are mixed-used and commercial buildings in the Dok Noord.`

TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE TRAM NETWORK The inner city of Ghent is well connected by tram. However, the site is disconnected from the tram network.

TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE LANDMARKS & AMMENITIES CYCLING There is an immense cycling culture that exists in Ghent with more than 13000 public bicycle racks within the streets of the City. While the inner city have incorporated cycling lanes within its roads, the roads within the site have far less designated cycling lanes.

R40 ROUTE The R40 is a prominent ring road in Ghent that connects the different neighbourhoods of the city.

LANDMARKS AND AMENITIES DOCK CRANES There are 7 dock cranes within the Dok Noord and the Oude Dokken harbour.

These cranes have been ‘retired’ and are now part of the industrial heritage of the City. The cranes can be used as reference points when walking in and around the site.

CONCRETE SILO The old concrete factory in the centre of the site is now part of the industrial heritage of the city.

WATERWAY NETWORK The site has a strong connection to the inland waterway network of Ghent, connected to the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, which makes the City well connected to the European Markets.

There are lots of barges docked within the sites harbour, with residents using them as their living quarters.

GENT-DAMPOORT The site has strong connection to the railways with the station located 5 mins south-east of the site.

Gent-Dampoort has direct connections to Antwerp and Brussels as well as Gent-Sint Pieters Station.

N458 ROUTE The N458 is a prominent route for truck and lorries delivering goods to or from the industrial buldings within the area.

INITIAL MASTERPLAN STRATEGY

PROPOSED TRAFFIC BRIDGE New traffic bridge will provide access from the R40 route to the expo site.

CLUSTER OF SMALL PAVILIONS Temporary small pavilions for gatherings, meetings and conferences with shops, cafes and restaurants.

The pavilions will be dismantled after the expo and land will be up for development.

RESIDENTIAL TOWERS High dense residential blocks overlooking the expo site. Will accommodate the locals as well as the visitors coming to see the expo.

PROPOSED DOME Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s Montreal Biosphere from Expo 67. It will be the nucleus of the site. It will serve as the centre stage of LARGER PAVILIONS hosting conferences Some pavilions will become permanent landmarks and events. Part of the after the expo while others will either be dismantled or legacy and will become relocated. Emptied lands will be up for development of the Expo 2030 Museum mixed used buildings. after the event.

PROPOSED LANDMARK Tower made from lightweight structure containing all the names of all participating countries. Will be part of the legacy of the expo.

PROPOSED MONORAIL LINE More expensive alternative to trams, however, it is safer and will fly over the traffic and pedestrian routes across the expo site. Visitors can take pictures from above as the fly past pavilions and landmarks.

EXISTING LANDMARKS (CRANES) The cranes will be used as reference points for places of gathering across the waterfront.

PROPOSEDMIXED-USE DISTRICT Adapted from the Nieuwe Dokken proposal, the district will consists of of mixed-use blocks that include apartments, offices, restaurants and local shops. The district is permanent and will remain after the expo.

PROPOSALS 1. The proposed wetlands introduces bio-diversity within the site, and improves its eco-system, thereby, promoting natural habitat.

2. Affordable Housing will be available to residents looking to move in to the area as the scheme aims to urbanisation of the site.

3. Introduction of a new traffic bridge, connects the R40 route to the expo site.

4. 2 to 3 bedroom apartments are available for groups of people, ie. families looking to move in to the site.

5. High rise multi-purpose buildings will include uses such as shops, restaurants, offices, as well as high dense housing.

6. Proposing a city park will aim to revitalise the area, improve the natural habitat and provide new civic spaces for people to meet.

7. Temporary Pavilions will be made from lightweight structure and will embody the different concepts for experimental housing by people taking part in the expo.

8. Developed Pedestrian Bridge will connect to the proposed promenade of the site.

9. Proposed Tram Route will provide transport access along the waterfront of the site and across the canal.

10. Experimental Housing will provide alternative sustainable living for everyone and will be the main theme of the expo.

TURNPIKE GALLERY Director’s Foreword This project comes at a pivotal moment for The Turnpike.

Since taking over the space in 2017, we have reinvented and reinvigorated this former local authority art gallery; establishing a high-quality programme of contemporary art and developing a ground-breaking community engagement and cultural education strategy.As we approach the halfway mark ina five-year plan to develop the gallery into a sustainable and vital cultural asset for the region, we are seeking greater capacity to expand both the ambition of our programme and our core team of delivery staff.

The gallery remains very close to its original 1971 design which often presents challenges in terms of storage, exhibition preparation, staff areas and community use.

We therefore welcome this fresh perspective on our spaces as well as the exciting prospect of developing the defunct flat roof space:since the original plans for building a performance space was scrapped in 1971, the roof has never found its true purpose. We’re delighted to work with LJMU students at this crucial moment in the organisation’s development and have been impressed by their approach to both problem solving and articulating the Turnpike’s vision.

AMBITION The project features a new proposal for the roof of the Turnpike.A reinvigoration of this space will promote the gallery’s omage and encourage morecommunity engagement in culture.

The ambition was to work in two phases the internal phase and the external roof ambition.

We also had an opportunity to work with famous AL and AL during this project and learn about the design ideas from them in this Live Project with our client Helen Stalker.

INTERNAL SPATIAL RECONFIGURATION The client has identified a number of priority issues to be addressed in order to improve the internal layout and the use of spaces.

These include; - a lot of stored equipment taking up considerable space that could possibly be put to better use - the lack of proper acoustics is problematic for all the different programmes happening in the building - the workshop room is frequently utilised but its adaptability could be improved to meet the demand - the private staff area isn’t sufficient, and there is no suitable meeting space.

EXTERNAL ROOF AMBITION The client has identified a number of priority issues to be addressed in order to improve the appearance of the roof and its flexibility as a useable space.

These include; - ongoing issues of anti-social behaviour, with it being frequently vandalised due to its ease of access - the roof is in serious need of repair - removal of asbestos required - the current perimeter wall height does not meet building regulation standards With the roof’s initial intended purpose of a theatre, the proposal should aim to bring life back to this space, giving public access to it.

The roof space has the potential to become an extension of the gallery, offering unique opportunities for commissioned artists to present work within the context of an elevated garden.

INTRODUCTION The Site

Located in Everton, the chosen site for this project is too small to attract major house builder interest (2747sqm). The site sits adjacent to existing social housing and alongside a major arterial route into the city.

Context The government has stated that providing fair social housing is priority and plans to build 250,000 homes by 2022. Shelter in a recent report state the true need is closer to 3 million new homes over the next 20 years.

Liverpool City Council has setup a new ethical housing company, ‘Foundations’ to build 10,000 new homes in the city on small to medium pockets of land that they own.

Modularisation is a type of construction method which utilises prefabrication, where prefabrication involves the manufacturing of building components in a factory controlled environment prior to final assembly on site.

The learning curve in the development of modular prefabrication has been fraught with historical problems and as a result, this type of construction is often associated with poor quality, box-like housing, built for poor communities. However, with the advancements in material technology, modularisation should have major advantages over on-site construction. Unlike the latter method, modular prefabrication is not subject to varying weather conditions, fluctuating temperature and humidity, and therefore benefits from cost certainty.

The scheme proposes a house typology that is adaptable. By providing an adaptable house typology that has been designed with future expansion in mind, the initial smaller house can be inhabited at a cheaper cost. The house owner can then easily expand when housing needs or incomes change in the future.

The project’s housing type is constructed from simple modular units, combined to form a well-proportioned one bed dwelling, suitable for couples, students and people who commute for jobs, who are looking for downsize with affordable rents. In its combined state, this system can be mirrored to form a complete floor plan.

The housing scheme consists of duplex houses and one bedroom terraced houses. Site proposal includes semi-private garden space for all the residents to use.

STRUCTURAL AND TECHNICAL STUDY The system followed for the modular housing project is SIPs. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design.

The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor.Building with SIPs generally costs about the same as building with wood frame construction when you factor in the labor savings resulting from shorter construction time and less jobsite waste. Other savings are realized because smaller heating and cooling systems are required with SIP construction

INTERIOR STUDY The overall strategy of natural and cross ventilation and natural sunlight through the scheme has been maintained, therefore the fronts of the dwellings such as kitchens, living areas, balconies are provided where the maximum daylight is gained as well the prevailing winds into the dwellings help the cross ventilation of the spaces within The module studied for the interior and light is the one bed unit, to show two different arrangements of interior spaces.

E N V I R O N M E N TA L STUDY

The main focus of the environment strategy has been to provide sufficient natural daylight to all the spaces.

Also the use of maximum prevailing winds through the site which will help the spaces to ventilate naturally.

Promotion of healthy living, a define characteristic of this project are the green spaces fro the residents.

This just not only creates healthier environment and cleaner air ,itencourages an lifestyle, where residents can socialise their time.

BICYCLE STORAGE Transportation-making it sustainable, 2minutes walk from the site to the nearest bus stop and provision of bicycles stands in the site.The pedestrianization of the street, aids the promotion of sustainable transport.

The close proximity of the site to the city center means that it is within walking or cycling distance.

COMMUNITY GREEN SPACES Semi-private open green space will promote with the socialising of the residents with each-other and initiate the interacting sessions for all age groups, spaces provided can be used for small community gardens for planting trees by residents.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING Rainwater is collected from rooftops and through ground infiltration and is stored in underground water tank. This water is then redistributed as grey water for the toilets and also used within the green spaces.

SMART METERS Providing smart meters, each unit will have a smart meter installed to allow the user to manage the inside environment and help to reduce the unrequired energy consumption.

DECIDIOUS TREES Deciduous trees that shed their leaves during the autumn months which help the spaces to get the required amount of sunlight seeping through them, but are in full bloom during summers, this provides an added layer of shading when the sun is strongest.

This trees also act as natural barrier between the houses maintains the privacy.

Invest in an original, for it will always retain its worth. An imitation will never be anything but a copy, a stolen idea. Appreciate the differences – not just the quality and more obvious variances but also the sensory and emotional appeal of the authentic product. An original is a lifelong companion and may well outlive you to be gratefully received by the next generation. But that’s a story for the future…..

INTRODUCTION VITRA ARCHITECTS AS DESIGNERS: 1)CHARLES AND RAY EAMES 2)VERNOR PANTON 3)JEAN PROUVE EXTRACTRecently Vitra presented hundreds of items from its archives at an exhibition during Milan design week on 21st April 2018.

Curator Robert Stadler revealed some of his favourite pieces, including Verner Panton’s Living Tower, and a cork chair by Jasper Morrison. Typecasting was on show as part of year’s Milan design week. The exhibition has taken over a huge space in the city’s Brera district, named La Pelota.

Stadler has grouped hundreds of furniture pieces from Vitra’s archives into what he describes as 1“characters” – each representing a different human behaviour or habit.

They include: the communal, the compulsive organisers, the slashers (people who are combining professions), the dreamers, the beauty contestants, the Spartans, the restless, the athletes and the dating-site encounters.The idea behind this way of grouping is that the exhibition should tell something about us as people, not just the furniture presented,” Stadler told Dezeen.

1“It gives a different insight into well-known objects. He went through an intensive course of Vitra, where he found many things he never saw,” he added. 4“He wanted a ‘transhistorical’ approach, so each community has historical and current items. 1“From the 200 objects on show, there were eight of Stadler’s highlights, which will be mentioned in detail in first chapter of study about vitra.

The 1st chapter of the study will emphasise on Vitra, how did they started producing furniture and how did the classic furniture design influence the entire industry, which further expands on how it employs renowned designers to create entirely new furniture concepts. How the current concept of sustainability is focussed by vitra since company foundation, as well as how company emerged with new concepts and production of furniture after burn down of the factory.

The study will also focus on what vitra as a company is trying to do, how the business as module is run by the architects as furniture designers and how it makes the whole of vitra as a different company than the other furniture companies such as Haworth Europe, Casino etc. Which architects as furniture designers marked their name and work in Vitra and why did the company hire different architects for the furniture production

The study further expands on three chapters mainly focusing on three different architects as furniture designer for vitra who marked their names in the company and how did there work differ from each other but still managed to be similar in the type of work for Vitra.

It also explains how there work got renowned and till date rights have been reserved for the furniture they produced and how well Vitra manages to display great work through exhibitions and the collection in Vitra museum, which also has the collection of the miniatures of furniture pieces by all the Vitra designers and the way they re-launch some masterpieces and make the modern world know about their work and preserve the originality.

The 2nd chapter will explain about the well-known American designer Charles and Ray Eames in modern architecture and furniture designer who marked their first work with Vitra in late 50s till late 80s.

The 3rd chapter will explain in detail the work about the French designer Jean Prouve, as metal worker, self-taught architect and designer, where Vitra regards Prouve as one of the twentieth century’s great designer-engineer, alongside Charles and Ray Eames, also known as his wood-and-metal furniture, made with aeronautic-looking details.

The 4th and last chapter will explain about the most influential 20th century Danish furniture and interior architect Verner Panton who created innovative and futuristic designs in a variety of materials, especially plastics, and in vibrant and exotic colours. His style was very “1960s” but regained popularity at the end of the 20th century; as of 2004, Panton’s most well-known furniture models are still in production.

The study will conclude with the discussion base d on the four chapters studied ,with differentiating the ways this three architects with their way and type of work, it will also focus on how they differ yet had some similarities with type of furniture design they produced for vitra as the whole, also state that their work is still marked as a masterpiece in todays world with rest of the designers for Vitra.

CLASSSICS Eames Lounge Chair is one of the most frequently imitated around the globe due to its fame and popularity.

The exhibition Sit is an exploration of Charles and Ray Eames’ design process and history.

Through a mix of historical imagery, production techniques, compelling artifacts, and engaging interactives, Sit inspires visitors to think critically about how design impacts their everyday life.

Prouve’ designed several furniture and buildings but his approach always differed from the predominant Bauhaus style; 2he rejected the steel furniture and their tube technique.

He preferred sheet metal for his works.

Its durability and shape -and his knowledge of the materialallowed him to bent, compressed and weld it.

Panton came into contact with Vitra in 1963. Together they developed the Panton Chair, which was first presented in 1967.

Pre-series production of the Panton Chair commenced in 1967. It was hailed as a sensation and received numerous prizes

What exactly is a Vitra Original?

An original cannot be called an original until it has been authorised by the designer.

To ensure authenticity, Vitra works in close quarters with the designer or their heirs to ensure it complies to their standards. Therefore, a Vitra product is still considered an original if it was produced recently, years ago, in great numbers or as part of a limited collection.As a r esult, an Eames Lounge Chair crafted in 1956.

What is a design classic?

Classics are designs that have been established for many years and continue to retain their popularity. These designs have always been ahead of their time, owing their enduring popularity to their innovative character and a certain aura that counterfeits lack.

Designs such as the Panton Chair and the Eames Aluminium Group broke the existing mould with their revolutionary materials, construction and innovative shapes.

This has transformed them into symbols of their era that continue to influence the field of design and as a result have become true icons that contribute to our culture.

What distinguishes a Vitra Original from a copy?

First of all, collaboration with the designers and their families.

What would you say to someone looking to buy a cheap counterfeit rather than an original?

Only an original can give you the assurance that you have purchased an authentic design classic.

An original will not lose its value – on the contrary, it can even increase in value over the years thanks to the unique patina it will develop. A counterfeit will always remain a cheap copy and a stolen idea, whose quality is drastically unlike that of the original. Furthermore, all the designers or their descendants participate in the success of their products.

Charles and Ray Eames wanted to bring “the best to the greatest number of people for the least”, but not everyone can afford an original Eames The Eames duo created both expensive products and more affordable ones, for example the Eames Plastic Chair is an excellent example of quality and value. On the other hand, the Eames Lounge Chair has always been an exclusive product that is no more expensive now than when it was designed in 1956. Even in their heyday, Charles and Ray Eames were beginning to fight against cheap and mediocre copies of their creations.

INTRODUCTION ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA IN ELLESMERPORT EXTRACTEllesmere Port has a 53.28 North latitude, 2.9 West longitude and a population of around 68,000. Previously called as Port of Ellesmere, Ellesmere Port is both a town and port in Cheshire, England. It is located to the north of Chester city and south of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral on the banks of Manchester Ship Canal. The town has a population of approximately 64,600. It is currently retaining Stanlow oil refinery and Vauxhall Motors car factory making industrial and manufacturing sector the major employer alongside service sector. The town of Ellesmere Port first gained notoriety in the late18th Century when the then named Ellesmere Canal was first proposed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and began construction soon after, with the intention of creating a connecting canal between the three rivers; Mersey, Severn and Dee. Although the creation of this canal was the major starting point for Ellesmere Port as an area, it was never completed, and remains unconnected from the river Severn, and being renamed the Manchester Ship Canal. Although this civil engineering starting point of the Ellesmere Canal sadly resulted in abandonment, it helped kick start and pioneer the industrial boom which has shaped the town as we now view it today. Even before the construction of the Ellesmere Canal, there was an industrial presence in the area, as a result of its intimately close proximity to the River Mersey, which made it an ideal location for a port. After the construction of the railway station in the 1860s, Ellesmere Port cemented itself as an ideal industrial location, boasting a dock in the Mersey, a canal being developed to link it towards Chester and a railway line all in close proximity to one another. Ellesmere Port continued to grow as both an industrial area, and in response, as a residential area to feed the ever increasing demand for local workers. During the early 20th century the docks finally begin to take their present day shape and form, the Ellesmere Canal becomes the Manchester Ship Canal, and several new industrial sites appear.

A conservation area features at the docks, which includes many old buildings, now listed, and in the wider area several industrial landmarks surround the town.

Hence, a new proposal of expansion of Railway Station can serve the above purpose.

Currently, the canal at the eastern periphery of the site is not utilised to its full potential.

Therefore, by proposing a walking promenade beside, will enhance the canal and its surroundings as well. Moreover, it would assist in gaining more economy to the site.

The hierarchy of Whitby road has been maintained by proposing similar shops along the road.

The proposed residences are of the same typology as the existing site so as to maintain the uniformity with the neighbourhood.

The initial concept of the design proposal popped from the fact that bringing, work, home and leisure together can attract more people to the town, which in turn, adds to the economic and infrastructure development of the city. Expansion of Railway Station - The Ellesmere Port Railway Station has been proposed to expand in order to accommodate the rising population. Pedestrianization of the site - By proposing a fully pedestrian zone within the within the project, it ensures a safe and healthy strategic plan. Building Heights – The building heights are proposed, such that it creates a visual connection from the railway tracks to the site, as citizens approach towards it from the station. Open Spaces – The open spaces are divided into:1.Private residential Park – A private residential park is provided, which attracts the children of the adjacent houses, as well as adults to spent their leisure time.

2.Public park – The public park is designed midst of the infrastructure to create a balance of spaces within the site. Also, it would act as outdoor leisure space for the users of the site.

3.Walking Promenade – A walking promenade with food courts, seating, cycling track and pedestrian way is proposed along the canal, that adds to the aesthetics of the design. Also, this ensures that the canal is utilised to its full potential.
