COMMENDATION FOR URBAN DESIGN

NEWCASTLE STATION AND PUBLIC DOMAIN

CONRAD GARGETT

Following the closure of the railway to Newcastle Station, it provided the prospect of restoring the place of significance by unifying the layers of historical importance with the city and waterfront, resulting in a revitalisation of the public sphere that allowed for integrated access for the community.

The consultants have implemented a master plan which revamps the area to launch a new urban plaza providing activated multi-use spaces for the public to revel in, as well as a facility to accommodate large open-air functions such as ticketed events that further stimulate community building. The design evolved through historical investigation of previous shorelines, middens, and industry to restore the abandoned rail corridor. Now the station has a new lease on life as a thriving community hub for recreation, business, shopping, events, and other endless possibilities.
