Energy conservative sustainable green technologies were integrated into the home including radiant floor heat, high R value soy bean based spray on insulation, 100% recycled glass tile, rigid roof insulation, super insulated foundation walls and slab floor, interior inert non-toxic milk paint, as well as a high efficiency furnace and fireplace.

The exterior walls were articulated according to interior function with terra-cotta red roman brick and colored mortar to match. The backstage wing and entry walls are yellow/buff cement stucco with anodized aluminum channels. A “turf-paved” grass driveway was also incorporated into the design.

Unbuilt Project Construction Start Date: March/April 2021 Addition and Renovation of a Home at 13502 Port Royal Court Mustang Island Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi, Texas

In July of 2020, a former client purchased a waterfront marina home in Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi, Texas. They asked me to design a renovation and double the size of their south Texas Alamo style abode. They asked us to transform it into another home just like their home in Long Beach, Indiana.

Suggesting that that idea would not work, we said we would address their wants, needs, budget and aesthetics for a compatible simple modern addition. We accomplished this by re-focusing the home on the westerly bay views and sunsets. Taking a cue from the generally placid bahia azul water and applying fluid design lines, on the existing historic Alamo style, we retained curvilinear nautical pilot house elements along with a bit of whimsy. The solution is visually transformative. The duality of the plan function was maintained as the owner's desire was to provide living and working space for their sons and families while maintaining clear panoramic views.

Lucid Architecture is a West Michigan based architecture practice focused on creating engaging and meaningful homes for discerning clients across the country. Our projects are inspired by a passion for modern design coupled with a deep understanding of site, context, craft, and detail.

In this issue of MIRA, we are excited to introduce two new projects that are both incredible examples of projects which show that amazing doesn’t have to be huge. Both of these projects are under 2500 square feet, and pack an incredible amount of design into their small footprints. The Rosy Mound Retreat wrapped up last year, and has a unique floating living room suspended above the ground level. The Mercer Residence was just awarded a design award from AIA Grand Rapids, and is a great example of what a smaller project can be on a challenging site. We also have a sneak preview of our Hidden Lakes Residence. Easily one of our most ambitious and exciting projects to date, and it has just begun construction. MARSH VIEW Located in Portage, Michigan, Marsh View is a 1960’s mid-century renovation that seeks the true spirit of the original architectural intent. Formerly, a large central masonry core and 1990’s kitchen renovation blocked all views to the natural beauty of this unique site. Collaborating with the Owner, we revealed the true potential of the house by removing the masonry core and re-organizing the kitchen and main living areas. By rotating the kitchen and pulling it away from the garage, we simultaneously re-connected it to the living areas and inserted an efficient mudroom, powder and laundry that allow this young and active family to better manage the flow of their daily lives.

New windows and doors accentuate the existing architectural expression of the house and enhance the design changes made to the layout. The dark, monotone exterior is quiet and sophisticated, punctuated by a warm, clean and bright interior palette. Clever storage solutions are integrated throughout the home. MMA provided full architectural and interior design services for this unique project.

Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Saxonia Lane project brings new life to an existing modern gem from the 1970’s. Collaborating with a young and growing family, the design takes advantage of the best assets of the existing home while remodeling and updating it in a respectful, engaging way.

The primary living area was previously an unusable indoor pool, now thoughtfully integrated with the rest of the home. Heated concrete floors, indoor/outdoor entertaining and abundant natural light make this space ideal for the family. The kitchen and dining spaces revolve around an upper-level roof deck and serve a peaceful living room with an intimate overlook to the backyard and the nature preserve beyond.

The layout of the home and the circulation paths throughout provide views in all directions and bring natural light in at every turn. MMA provided full architectural services and collaborated with the Owner on all interior design.

CASCADE FARMS Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cascade Farms explores the transformational possibilities of an early 1980’s era renovation. Newly empty-nesters, the Owners were looking for warm, modern, open and unified spaces to comfortably welcome gatherings for family and friends. Prior to the renovation, the house included many small rooms, dedicated hallways, stepped down living areas, a dark and heavy corner fireplace and limited natural light.

The design objectives included accessibility of space, more natural light, better spatial connectivity and a focus on sustainable performance. The main living area is directly connected to the kitchen with a unified material palette, as well as to new outdoor living areas beyond. The primary entry was reorganized with new storage, natural light, a reconfigured stair and elegant detailing. A new central concrete hearth and fireplace provides a strong, modern focal point for the living area and conceals a TV room beyond.

The exterior envelope includes new insulation throughout, siding, energy-efficient windows and two large roof-mounted solar arrays to offset energy consumption. New HVAC maximizes energy efficiency using a fraction of its former footprint. Soft tones and muted colors throughout allow handsome detailing to take center stage. MMA provided full architectural services and coordinated with an outside interior designer.
