Arizona Residential Architects

Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect

1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.

2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.

3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.

4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.

5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.

6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.

7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.

8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.

9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.

10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

Candelaria Design With more than 30 years of experience in custom residential architecture, both new build and renovations, as well as boutique commercial projects, Candelaria Design takes inspiring living to a whole new level. Through their creative ideas and thoughtful designs, Candelaria Design, and the man who started it all, Mark Candelaria, AIA, are truly an inspiration to clients and industry peers alike. Mark formed Candelaria Design Associates in 1999 with the belief that the architectural design process should be creative and fun, not tedious and uninspiring. Mark’s talent of sketching by hand and his expertise in spatial design earned him the prestigious title of Master of the Southwest in 2005 by Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine. He was also named as one of the top 125 architects in the Western United States by Western Interiors Magazine. Candelaria Design has been ranked as the No. 1 Residential Architecture Firm in Arizona repeatedly by Arizona Business Magazine. Some of the firm’s most prestigious honors include the Pacific Coast Builders Gold Nugget Award for custom homes over 6,500 square feet and the first LEED-certified home, The Zona Verde Home located in Paradise Valley, and the architect chosen to design the HGTV Smart Home located in Scottsdale in 2017.

Candelaria Team In the age of technology and rapid, impersonal communications, it is comforting to have the ability to instantly take an idea or concept from a client and manifest the notion with pen to paper. Candelaria’s hand-selected team of talented architects and project managers follow a careful and deliberate process in each custom luxury home or boutique commercial design. The firm’s philosophy is rooted in the initial human connection and enhanced with the latest technology that allows the team to produce designs that encompass a spirit and custom craftsmanship unlike any other offered today. Candelaria Lifestyle Candelaria Design has taken the notion of ‘inspiring living’ and expanded it to encompass annual self-guided European travel tours and custom luxury home furnishings designed with these world travels in mind. Currently, they offer tours of Italy and Spain. Both tours immerse guests in European ancient architecture, sweeping views of the land, culinary cooking classes, fine dining on local cuisine, antique shopping treasures and endless fun. Mark’s love of traveling, cooking and design has also inspired his own line of home accessories including a custom-designed Pasta Maker available in ‘race car red.’ For more information on Candelaria Design, we invite you to visit candelariadesign.com.

Although Architecture is a technical discipline, to him, it is still an art form on a human scale. Licensed in several states, with over 35 years of experience, he strives to create design work as both sculpture and a functional living environment. Every commission is unique and must meet certain criteria to satisfy a client. The process of design involves effective communication and being a good listener. "Understanding and meeting our clients' needs is probably the single most important factor in achieving success with a project. Architectural design is a very personal process ... from concept to completion." While many Architects' design work occurs within a fairly narrow design range, Hann prefers to be known for his creative solutions involving a fairly wide range of design styles. His strength is in the diversity of his work and his ability to interpret his clients' needs without stylistic parameters. James Hann Design, AIA is "Art as Architecture where the greatest satisfaction is realizing his clients' dreams."

One of life’s great pleasures is to find something to be passionate about. If one is lucky, the ability to share pleasure with others generates even greater enjoyment. Asked to design a space exclusively for a memorable experience as opposed to simply storing wines proved to be an exceptional opportunity. Creating a space that only exists to enhance a ritual requires a surrender to the passion.

Kendle Design Collaborative designs homes that speak to your heart and soul, homes that are inspired by the natural beauty of the land that you call home, be it forest, waterfront, prairie or desert. We strive to design homes where a unique visual delight may be found around every corner and in every detail, often changing with the passing of the sun or the changing of the seasons. This we believe is living architecture, an ever-changing natural tapestry that celebrates the many joys of living. As an architect, I feel my primary responsibility is to clearly understand my client’s priorities, their values, and aspirations, but most importantly to understand what brings them joy. Then and only then can I carefully craft the design and details of their new home such that it enhances their daily living, bringing them joy in their quietest moments as well as times of celebration. I hope that you will consider us for your next home design. We would be honored to work with you, where together we can design a home that brings you joy.

Valley Legacy Architects Fred M. Guirey, FAIA: Functionality, Buildability, Simplicity By Frank Aazami and David M. Brown Fred Melville Guirey, FAIA, (1908–1984) completed four decades of exemplary architectural work that remains vital and historically significant 36 years after his death. Most of this took place from his one-man firm and later as the founding principal of Guirey, Srnka, Arnold and Sprinkle (GSAS) in Phoenix. He and his associates were principally known for commercial, institutional and governmental commissions such as the

Arts and Architecture Complex at Arizona State University in Tempe and the Western Savings and Loan in Sun City. His uptown Phoenix home is widely celebrated. He is credited with 65 major projects, including 28 custom homes, says Doug Sydnor, FAIA, principal of Douglas Sydnor Architect and Associates Inc., Scottsdale. “I sense that he was viewed as a solid performer and addressed the functionality, technical aspects and buildability with great skill and confidence. His built work was somewhat understated and more visually quiet than maybe his contemporaries at the time, but he delivered

a

sound,

proportional,

well-scaled

and

fitting

architecture,” he explains. Guirey was an older colleague and fellow architect of his father, the distinguished Valley architect, Reginald Sydnor, AIA. Alison King, creator of Modern Phoenix, adds, “Fred Guirey is regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Phoenix for the role he played in shaping the look of our city in the postwar era. A prominent social leader dedicated to service his entire life, Guirey was the glue that held the architectural community together.” “Fred Guirey has a large, and often overlooked, legacy here in the

2

Valley. He contributed not just to the Phoenix metro area, but really the entire state owes him an honor for his work,” says Scott Jarson, who with wife Debbie are the Valley specialists in “Architecturally Unique Homes” through their azarchitecture. (azarchitecture.com) Adds Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale: “We represent homes throughout the Valley that combine style and taste, and Guirey’s work exemplifies a commitment to these goals.

2

2

“In the later years, he employed concepts such as open floor plans and indoor/outdoor connections that are so popular today, decades after he incorporated them,” he adds. “It is important for all of us to maintain our commitment to ensure his work continues to stand for others to enjoy as the Valley grows.”

“His built work was somewhat understated and more visually quiet than maybe his contemporaries at the time, but he delivered a sound, proportional, well-scaled and fitting architecture” - Doug Sydnor, FAIA 1. Go East, Young Architect, and Grow Up with Phoenix Guirey was born in Oakland, California, in 1908 to Fred William and Emily Caroline Guirey, respectively a railroad conductor and registered nurse. An asthmatic, Fred moved the family to Tucson in 1922, where Fred graduated from Tucson High School and attended the University of Arizona in 1927. He then transferred to the University of California where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture in 1933. After working his way through school, Guirey began as a draughtsman and landscape engineer for the Arizona Highway Department from 1935 to 1942. Here he headed its new landscape department, creating roadside parks and rest areas statewide. Between 1942 and 1946, he worked as a site planner for the Phoenix office of Leeds, Hill, Barnard and Jewett. For a short time, he was a draughtsman for Gilmore and Varney. He then started his firm in 1946 with Stan Quist as an associate, and from 1947–1950 the company was Guirey and Jones Associates Architects. Milan E. Srnka joined Guirey in 1958, and Richard M. Arnold a year later. Both became principals in 1963, and the name accordingly changed to Guirey Srnka and Arnold. Soon after in 1969, George Sprinkle became a member, and his name was added, hence Guirey, Srnka, Arnold and Sprinkle. Guirey was honored as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1969. He was one of the founding members of the Dons in Arizona, which encouraged tourism to the state based on its natural wonders and recreational lifestyle. He volunteered widely with many community organizations. And, he was noted for his close association with fellow AIA members. For example, in 1948, he nominated Fred Weaver of the landmark Valley architects, Weaver and Drover, for AIA membership.

Fred M. Guirey, FAIA (cont.) Fred married Phoenix native Catherine Louise Bolen, “Tat,” in 1939. They had two daughters, an artist, Caroline Rogue Guirey Simpson, who was killed in a car accident in 2004, and Sheri Tingey, who lives in Mancos, Colorado. “My dad’s legacy was as much about him as his architecture,” she says. “His designs have really stood the test of time. But who he was as a person is what I hear people missing the most. He was incredibly smart and amazingly knowledgeable about almost everything, Arizona in particular. He mentored many young architects. He served on so many planning boards that drove the future of Phoenix and, in particular, the Maricopa County Parks.” In the early 1980s, he began semi-retirement. He died in 1984. A Small but Excellent Home Résumé

“The way he conserved the depot, designed a compatible attachment, and his partnership with the original owner was evident in the original completed project” - Jerry Cook, AIA 3

“I particularly love the unique nature and personal approach you can find in his homes,” Jarson adds. These include the Corwin Mocine Residence (1947), his first commission, finished with brick and emphasizing a strong indoor/outdoor relationship, and the Mr. and Mrs. Louis Volpe Residence in Paradise Valley (1954). His firm also did development site plans and at least one family subdivision in Tempe. Another is the hill-top Depot Home, a former Northern Arizona Santa Fe RR Train Station which was relocated in 1964 from the mining town of Mayer about an hour and a half north of the Valley. Owned by Arizona Republic columnist and later Arizona Highways editor, Don Dedera, the home was moved by truck and set atop its north Phoenix knoll. “The way he conserved the depot, designed a compatible attachment, and his partnership with the original owner was evident in the original completed project,” recalls Jerry Cook, the architect who coordinated the interior remodel of the project in 2010. “To be able to carry that tradition forward, even though we made major changes to the interior, was my goal.” Two homes represent the divergent paths for Guirey’s homes and point out these crucial times for his and other Mid-Century Modern works. One, the Whitacre Residence (1952) in Rocky Acres of Uptown Phoenix, had redwood details, ample picture windows, Venetian tile and a “modestly comfortable human scale,” Jarson says, who notes that both the front door and floor-to-ceiling living room windows provided an unobstructed view of landmark Piestewa Peak. “It's unfortunate that it failed to sell for many years and was eventually

4

demolished.”

In the same area, the Gaskin Residence (1970), which Guirey designed for John Gaskin, owner of Capitol Lumber in Phoenix, appropriately featured extensive woodwork. Fortunately, it was restored by Stuart Moore with Moore Made Development in 2018 and sold to a new owner and steward. “We didn't want to change what Guirey had created; we just wanted to give it a fresh look,” Moore says. “We were hoping if he were to walk in the house today that we would get his approval in the restoration.” Phoenix native and architect Don Ryden, recalls spending time in the Gaskin home in Paradise Valley. He notes that Guirey’s post-and-beam structure and free-flowing plan may be a redwood reinterpretation of the modern concepts that Mies van der Rohe first presented in the 1929 Barcelona Pavilion in Spain. “The Gaskin home was a joyful labyrinth expressed by a playful dialogue between large panels of wood and of glass bringing indoors and outdoors together,” says Ryden, principal of Ryden Architects Inc., Phoenix. “It was a localized, regionalized and

5

materialized interpretation of Miesian principles.”

ARA19 129

Fred M. Guirey, FAIA (cont.) A favorite for everyone is the Guirey Residence, 300 East Missouri Avenue, built 1942–44 in a four-parcel tamarisk grove, with a hand-constructed sandstone fireplace completed by Guirey and his wife, often flipping on car headlights for illumination, built-in furniture and a 400-square-foot “granny house.” This was Guirey’s first project, which received renovations and additions over time, including a front bedroom and sunroom (1950) and a major addition (1963). His home was designed for large gatherings, including those for the American Institute of Architects, explains Sydnor, who recalls 7

attending a party there in the 1980s. “The interior spaces and series of outdoor patios and courtyards definitely worked well in this

9

regard,” he recalls. “Overall, the character felt rooted in Japanese gardens with a series of intimate indoor and outdoor spaces that blur together,” he adds. “This became a pleasant unfolding spatial continuum.” As such, it presages today’s concept of the indoor/outdoor desert living connection. “Outdoor patios and courtyards were spatial extensions of the home interiors and felt very well-scaled, comfortable and inviting,” he adds, noting that he had heard a new homeowner remodeled the home disregarding this integrity. Inside, Guirey used exposed natural redwood for the post-and beam-structure, window framing and the built-in millwork. “Within

10

the intricate and well-detailed wood framing are clear glazing and translucent

panels,

so

it

provided

varying

degrees

of

transparencies and intrigue from space to space,” he says.

8

Jarson has admired the Guirey home since youth, driving by often with his family. As an adult, when he was first asked to visit a standout Mid-Century Modern home in the area, he knew immediately which one it was. “Seeing that home inside was a lifelong dream for me,” he recalls. For him, it is a vital part of what he calls the “visual wealth” of the Valley. “It has a long horizontal nature to it that, combined with select redwood as the primary building material, and the large irrigated lot, made it a signature Arizona home: a perfect example of its postwar time and place.” “It was a house built for parties with a remarkable game room addition, complete with a polished green concrete floor. The room would be cleared for parties and transformed into their own private ballroom,” he adds. 9

10

“It has a long horizontal nature to it that, combined with select redwood as the primary building material, and the large irrigated lot, made it a signature Arizona home.” - Scott Jarson

King notes, “Its rambling floorplan, deep setback, abundant glass and Asian-inspired screens combine to make a gracious statement about the Uptown Phoenix lifestyle.” “His designs and buildings were so diverse and plentiful, it was not until I was gifted his scrapbook archives and drawings from a family member that I really saw just how often his designs touched people’s lives,” Jarson says. “It was a case of knowing that a particular building had something ‘special’ about it, only to find out that Fred Guirey or his firm was involved.”

The Union of Dwelling and Land Clint Miller’s childhood home was nestled in the hills of Southern California, where large expanses of living room windows framed landscaping, where honest, load-bearing wood beams both supported the home’s structure and adorned its interior. As a youngster, Clint felt a kinship with these simple structures and their textures and proportions, and to the views that revealed the surrounding environment. These early experiences helped shape Clint’s architectural quest to understand the intricate balance required to create a home that forges a natural relationship of dwelling and environment. For more than three decades, architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site, whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding desert. Miller’s body of work balances delicate detail and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design; each home respects and embraces its site. Clint’s residential projects have been featured in AIA Home Tours, honored in an AIA Homes of the Year competition, and recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit. In March of 2010 he was honored as a Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden magazine and has been featured several times on that publication’s cover.

TSONTAKISRCHITECTURE Nick Tsontakis was born at home in Kostadiana, a tiny village located off the northwest coast of Crete. He came into this world in a bedroom with corner windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. He grew up gazing at some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet. When his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he marveled at the aesthetic magnificence of Old Montreal and the innovative structures and international pavilions of Expo ‘67. Living in Montreal, Nick graduated from McGill University School of Architecture with Distinction, and was the principal of Nick Tsontakis Architects from 1981 to 2001. He moved to Scottsdale and formed Tsontakis Architecture in 1996.

Christy & Company ARCHITECTURE, LLC

Christine Wareing AIA Principal Architect

PO Box 25486 Scottsdale, Arizona 85255 christy@christyandco.com www.christyandco.com 480.483.0713 Christy & Company Architecture specializes in high-end custom residential projects, and have had the pleasure of working with great clients and sites for many years. We are team players, and enjoy working through the process with the design team, usually consisting of the interior designer, builder, engineers, landscape architect, lighting designer, automation (a/v) specialist, custom craftsmen and trades, and of course, the client. Christy & Company is dedicated to providing our clients with not just talented design, but with enjoying the best experience possible throughout the process of any project. We have embraced the mantra ‘Where Sanctuary is Sculpture’ which explains the company’s direction and focus, all of which is the culmination of Christy’s southwest upbringing and education, coupled with her innate sensibilities of design, that compliment clients’ diverse cultures and lifestyles with their high-end southwest properties. We believe our surroundings give us an experience that has a powerful effect on our quality of life. This concept is a notion that Christy became aware of at an early age and it has carried through in her work ever since. She founded the boutique firm over 10 years ago, even though her residential experience working on prestigious properties began several years earlier. Christy holds a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University and a Masters of Architecture from the University of New Mexico. She has been a registered Architect in Arizona since 1999.

I’m often asked what an architect does. It’s a mystery for sure. The obvious thing we do is create complex drawings with special tools and big pieces of paper, but before all that, before all the sketches and plans... a good architect listens. Yes, being an architect is about hearing a person’s goals and desires. But, most of the time that’s not enough. It’s not enough just to listen. I’ve found that being an architect, an exceptional architect, is about asking the right questions. Questions that release a person’s hidden dreams and secret desires, questions that lead to personal and unique expressions, whatever they may be. I care about your vision, your dream, and your goals. I listen as much for what’s not being said as what is. My team and I would be proud to help you experience that miraculous feeling of living in the home of your dreams.

In Memorium Published in the Wausau Daily Herald from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, 2020

CRAIG JOHNSON Mesa - Craig Johnson, 57 of Mesa, AZ unexpectedly passed away on February 1st, 2020. He is the son of Sally Wassmann and the late Roger Johnson, and was born in Wausau, WI. He is survived by his wife, Fritz Johnson, his daughter, Jenny Johnson, and his brother Todd Johnson. He lived in Arizona for the past twenty three years and loved to ride his Harley, go camping and hiking, get in as many rounds of golf that he could, and of course root for the Packers. He would always return to Wisconsin multiple times each year to be with friends and family. It is with a heavy and broken heart that we will always have our beautiful memories left behind as he touched so many people's lives. His family always came first and were the joy of his life. Craig was an amazing man who lived his life with passion, kindness, a great sense of humor, and always had a smile on his face. He affected so many people who knew him as he was such an incredible person with such a big heart. We will miss him dearly as he mattered so much to all of us, but we will never forget him as he impacted our lives deeply.
