The environment at the Bray is wonderfully dynamic and while continually moving forward, it is important to stop and reflect on the many events and accomplishments each year. This opportunity to look back helps us appreciate the diverse community who contribute to the Bray’s evolution and growth. However, as this letter reaches you, we are in the midst of hardship across the globe, and while everyone is affected by the pandemic and the downturn in the economy, I want to take a moment to let you know the Bray staff are digging into creative solutions to continue our good work and we are determined to use this time to seek innovation and be creative—two of our greatest assets. We are all in this together and, as ever, we want to continue to be a place of respite for you. The Honor Roll publication is a small way we can thank those who volunteer their time, offer creativity and talent and provide financial support for our mission. Since its inception, the Bray has been a place that has provided time and space for artists to explore new ideas and directions—this freedom for artists, this special place to work, would not be possible without the help of so many generous individuals. Thank you! We are fortunate to have a wide range of resident artists who come to Montana each year to work in the various studios. In 2019, we hosted many energetic residents including: long-term residents Ben Carter, Christina Erives, Richard W. James, Kyle Johns and Yoonjee Kwak; summer residents Sophie Aguilera-Lester, Tom Alward, Peter Barbour, Naomi Clement, Shauna Fahley, Chenlu Hou, Kelsie Rudolph, Mallory Wetherell, Nathan Willever, Mary Cale Wilson, and Matt Ziemke; and short-term residents Ann Christenson, Bradley Klem, Adam Meistrell, Yeonsoo Kim and Shalya Marsh. Their dedicated involvement in our community is palpable and we wish them well in the next stages of their careers. In the fall, we welcomed a new group of long-term residents: Jason Bige Burnett, Katy Drjiber, Raven Halfmoon, Chase Travaille and Nicholas Weddell. They will join the second-
year long-term residents Jessica Brandl, Stuart Gair, Iva Haas and Kelly Stevenson and we look forward to the synergy of these artists working in the Bray’s collaborative environment. 2019 was a year of transition on campus as the staff adjusted to working in the newly renovated administrative offices housed in the historic Pottery building. While the old offices were what we might call “cozy”, the new administrative wing offers much-needed space to plan and program annual activities. As a staff, we are eager to utilize the resources now available to better serve our community. Classes and workshops continue to evolve in the Education and Research Facility with many new faces--young and old--enrolled in the programs working alongside some of our long-time members. While our classes have been temporarily put on hold, due to the safety of our students and staff, we are using this time to research and develop new digital experiences to stay connected, including weekly live broadcasts from the studios and galleries. While this pause in our programing was not anticipated, we are using the time it offers as an opportunity to improve the ways we can share the Bray with you and serve our community better moving forward. As we announced last summer, we are excited to move forward with the final phase of our capital campaign to build a new sales gallery and rotunda entrance to the foundation. If you have been to the Bray recently, you may have noticed some activity as we prepare the site for construction. As our final projects culminate, we will rely on individual and foundation support to ensure momentum and success into the future. We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated donors and friends, who are, through their generosity, ensuring the Bray remains a fine place to work for those in Helena and around the world. Thank you, again, for your commitment and support of the Bray. We hope by this time next year the dust will have settled on our campus improvements and that we will have emerged through this time with resilience and resolve. We’re looking forward to celebrating at our first opening in the sales gallery and connecting with you in new ways into the future.
