O

mani traditional settlements developed different physical and sociocultural characteristics based on local conditions.

U rbanism

Inland settlements typically had dense built fabrics and mazy streets to protect them from the sun. Perimeter walls, gates and towers protected them from external attacks.

People were mainly living on agriculture and animal farming, so these settlements

were built along irrigation channels (falaj) and consisted of neighbourhoods (harah) separated by date-palm fields.

A more traditionalist society developed here.

Coastal settlements were freely organised and open to the surroundings to benefit from the breezes.

People were mainly devoted to seafaring and trade, so they developed an open and cosmopolitan attitude.

uildings were compact, non-decorated, yet internally complex, structures.

The houses were up to three floors connected by stairs.

The ground floor, which had no windows, was used to keep the animals and dry the dates.

On the upper floors were multipurpose rooms, kitchen and latrine, usually organised around a terrace with columns.

Shops were generally grouped together, along a main central road, to form markets (souq).

Defensive buildings included watchtowers (husn) and forts (qal’at) often located on high grounds. The grandest houses were fortified by towers and parapet walls with loopholes.

Architecture

Communal buildings included male meeting halls (sablah),

mosques (masjid), religious schools (madrasah), ablution blocks (wudu), bathing structures (magazah), wells (tawi).

eometric and floral patterns were painted on ceilings and walls, and carved in the frames and external shutters of windows and doors.

A swirling knot was carved in the prayer niche (mihrab) of some mosques.

Mouldings often decorated the walls, while writings were inscribed under the arches.

D ecoration

The top edge of parapet walls was typically indented.

Non-decorated ceiling (Birkat al-Mawz, Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate)

alls and arches were made either of mud bricks or stone blocks and fired clay (sarooj).

Floors and roofs were flat and consisted, from the bottom up, of: palm tree trunks; reeds; woven palm leaf mat; woven palm fibres mat; mud layer; mud and lime finishing.

C onstruction

Stairs were typically built out of stones, as a solid mass either sitting on the floor or supported by an arch.

‫كما شملت أيضاً املساجد (املسجد)‪ ،‬واملدارس‬ ‫الدينية (املدرسة)‪ ،‬وأماكن للوضوء (الوضوء) ‪،‬‬ ‫ومكان الغسل (مجازه)‪ ،‬واآلبار (الطوي) ـ‬

‫تتمزي املستوطنات التقليدية ُ‬ ‫العمانية بخصائص‬ ‫طبيعية واجتماعية وثقافية مختلفة وذلك‬ ‫بحسب الظروف املحليةـ‬

‫وتتكون من أحياء (حارة) مفصولة بحقول‬ ‫النخيل‪ ،‬حيث نشأت املجتمعات ُ‬ ‫العمانية‬ ‫التقليدية يف هذ املستوطنات ـ‬

‫تتمزي املستوطنات الداخلية بنسيج عمراين‬ ‫مرتاص و كثيف وشوارع غري منتظمة لحمايتها‬ ‫من أشعة الشمس‪ .‬تلعب الجدران املحيطة ‪،‬‬ ‫والبوابات واألبراج دوراً مهماً يف الحماية من‬ ‫الهجمات الخارجية ـ‬

‫تم تنظيم املستوطنات الساحلية بشكل أوسع‬ ‫عمرانياً حيث تم تصميم املستوطنات بشكل‬ ‫مفتوح مع املناطق املحيطة لالستفادة من‬ ‫مسارات الرياح ـ‬

‫العمران‬

‫كان الناس يعيشون على الزراعة وتربية‬ ‫الحيوانات كمصدر رزق رئييس‪ ،‬لذلك تم بناء‬ ‫هذه املستوطنات على طول قنوات الري‬ ‫(الفلج)ـ‬
