the festival. The announcement follows the final day of WAF, in which prize winners across all 43 categories have been competing for the winning titles.

WINNERS World Building of the Year World Building of the Year went to The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre of Las Chumberas by Fernando Menis in La Laguna, Spain. The Holy Redeemer Church of Las Chumberas catalyses urban renewal in its neglected outskirts neighborhood, rising as a landmark in a fragmented built landscape. The site includes a church, a community center, and a public square, providing a vital gathering space for the locals.

Narrow cracks between structures, filled with sculptural metal and glass, filter daylight to create a minimalist, spiritual interior.

Professor of Design and Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard University. It included: Laurinda Spear, Founding Principal, Arquitectonica; Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal Partner, MAD Architects, and Sir Peter Cook, Director and architect, Peter Cook Studio Crablab.

World Interior of the Year Funded through donations, the irregular flow of contributions determined its design with four independent volumes built in phases, the first two— housing the centre— were completed within two years and have been operational since, while the remaining structures were finished 16 years later as funding allowed. Inspired by the volcanic landscape, it features massive, rough forms, contrasting with the built surroundings. Narrow cracks between structures, filled with sculptural metal and glass, filter daylight to create a minimalist, spiritual interior. Daylight is a key architectural element, shaping an introverted, austere space that invites reflection. Without windows, the building is illuminated by the unglazed cross and zenithal light. Throughout the day, the shifting light highlights different areas, guiding users through their interior exploration. Concrete, chosen for versatility, serves structure, form, texture, and acoustics. Locally produced, inexpensive, durable, and energy-efficient, the thick walls enhance its thermal inertia. Innovatively used for acoustics, chipped concrete mixed with volcanic stones absorbs sound and, alongside smooth or rough exposed concrete, achieves a sophisticated sound control, comparable to an opera house—ideal for spoken word and song.

World Interior of the Year went to FRACTAL CHAPEL by INNOCAD architecture in Graz, Austria. The FRACTAL CHAPEL, located at a state hospital in Graz and hosted by the Protestant Church, serves as a serene retreat for patients, staff, and visitors. The design is grounded in current neuroscience and environmental psychology research, integrating biophilic elements and fractal patterns to create a peaceful, emotionally resonant space. These elements work together to promote well-being, reduce stress, and foster calm in the demanding hospital environment. Fractal patterns are central to the chapel’s design. Developed through a collaboration between designers and scientists at the University of Oregon / Fractals Research, these patterns are inspired by nature’s geometry and evoke positive psychological, physiological, and neurological responses. The fractal designs were generated using a custom computer programme that combines artistic input with scientific analysis. This unique art-science tool enables

Fernando Menis, Founder of Fernando Menis Architecture, said: “Winning is a great gift, not only for me but also the church neighbourhood, which will now be recognised beyond Tenerife. Over the last three days in Miami, I have had the opportunity to travel to a new place, connect with friends, and be part of the global architecture community.” Paul Finch, Programme Director of the World Architecture Festival, commented: “The judges particularly admired the intensity of the architecture and the way light has been used to shape the quality and character of the interiors, enhancing the tactile nature of the surfaces. The building manages to masterfully accommodate the symbolic and everyday needs of the community of which the architect is a part. The project has become a fine addition to the architecture of Tenerife.” The winner was selected by a Super Jury chaired by Mohsen Mostafavi, Alexander and Victoria Wiley

the creation of patterns that are visually engaging while also promoting relaxation. The material palette of the chapel remains minimal to emphasise the interplay of pattern, form, and light. Wood is used for the ceiling, flooring, benches, and altar, contributing to the space’s warm, earthy character. This choice allows the fractal patterns and natural elements to remain the focal points. Covering 35 square meters, the chapel features a double-height ceiling and a room-high glass façade. Following principles of religious scenography, the low entry area opens into an 8-meter-tall space, creating a dramatic yet calming experience. At the heart of the chapel is a unique altar created by a renowned Austrian sculptor from the inverted rootstock of a walnut tree. Surrounded by fractal surfaces and enhanced by refined lighting, the altar invites moments of introspection and contemplation.

Future Project of the Year Future Project of the Year went to Gelephu International Airport by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group in Gelephu, Bhutan.

Landscape of the Year Landscape of the Year went to Embracing Flood: Xinjiang River Ecological Corridor by Turenscape in Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, China. The Xinjiang River Ecological Corridor in Shangrao City revitalises a 102-hectare floodplain, transforming it into a vibrant ecological and recreational space. Utilising sponge city principles, the project enhances flood resilience, restores native habitats, and offers year-round public access. Rather than resisting seasonal floods, the design embraces water as a dynamic force, integrating it into the landscape to support biodiversity and urban resilience. With a cost-effective and low-maintenance approach, the corridor reconnects people with nature while protecting the city from climate threats. Now a regional landmark, it serves as a scalable model for flood-prone cities worldwide. Eden Dock by Architect - Howells. Landscape Architect - HTA Design in London, UK, Taikoo Place by Gustafson Porter + Bowman & Urbis Limited in Hong Kong, and The Osona Viewpoint Network by Battleiroig in Osona Region, Spain were highly commended.

Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation, the Gelephu International Airport is Bhutan’s second international gateway, strategically located near the Bhutan-India border and the Paitha River. Set to open in 2029, the airport will initially support 123 daily flights, with projected annual passenger numbers reaching 5.5 million by 2065. Celebrating Bhutanese culture, the airport showcases regional crafts and is designed to instil mindfulness in travellers through natural lighting, a grand tripleheight entry, skylights, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Indoor and outdoor lounges offer spaces for yoga, gong baths, and meditation, reflecting Bhutan’s commitment to well-being and happiness. The terminal’s striking diagrid structure is built from locally and sustainably sourced timber, adorned with traditional Bhutanese wood carvings. Its painted

ALUPROF REITERATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT SPECIFICATION OF INTERNAL ALUMINIUM FIRE SCREENS BY WOJCIECH BROŻYNA - MD ALUPROF UK In the UK, internal fire screens are subject to stringent performance and safety standards to ensure they provide effective fire resistance and compartmentation. The key applicable standard is BS EN 135012, which classifies the fire resistance performance of building elements, including glazed screens, in terms of integrity (E), insulation (I), and radiation (W). Testing is carried out to BS EN 1634-1, which assesses the resistance of door and shutter assemblies and glazed elements to fire exposure. Additionally, the Building Regulations Approved Document B sets out the fire safety requirements for internal separations and escape routes, specifying how long a fire screen must resist fire and prevent the passage of smoke and flames in various building types and risk areas. Aluminium framed fire screens offer a compelling combination of strength, fire performance and design flexibility that often surpasses other materials. They are lightweight yet structurally robust, allowing for slimmer profiles and larger glazed areas that maximise natural light while maintaining critical fire protection. Aluminium is inherently corrosion-resistant and durable, reducing long-term maintenance costs, and can be finished in a wide range of powder-coated colours to suit any interior aesthetic. Combined with advanced fire-resistant glazing and internal insulation materials, aluminium systems can achieve high fire ratings without compromising on style or installation efficiency, making them a smart choice for modern commercial and residential environments. To make aluminium framing fire resistant, manufacturers incorporate specialised fire-retardant materials between the frame profiles that act as thermal barriers and insulators. These typically include intumescent strips or inserts, which expand rapidly when exposed to heat, sealing gaps and preventing the passage of flames and smoke. Within the aluminium frames ceramic insulation, and/or gypsum-based infills are

ARCHETECH - PAGE 12

also used to maintain the structural integrity of the frame under extreme temperatures. Together with fire-rated glazing and compatible gaskets, these elements allow the aluminium fire screen system to achieve the required EI classification, ensuring both integrity and insulation performance during a fire event. Modern aluminium fire systems are thermally broken and incorporate specialist glazing and gaskets, allowing them to meet EI30, EI60, or even EI120 classifications (maintaining integrity in minutes) while maintaining slim, elegant profiles suitable for contemporary interiors. This combination of strength and precision engineering allows for larger glazed areas and minimal sightlines, enhancing aesthetics without compromising safety. Aluminium is fully recyclable without loss of properties, contributing to low embodied carbon and supporting circular construction practices. Its durability also ensures long service life with minimal maintenance, making it ideal for hightraffic environments such as offices, hospitals, and educational buildings. Additionally, aluminium systems can be finished in a wide range of colours and textures through powder coating or anodising, ensuring both compliance with fire safety standards and alignment with the architectural vision of the interior space. It is crucial to source both the frames and glazing from a single, tested supplier when specifying fire-rated glazed screens to ensure full system compatibility and certified performance. Fire resistance is achieved through a precisely engineered combination of frame, glazing, seals, and fixings that have been tested together as a complete assembly under BS EN 1634-1. Mixing components from different manufacturers can invalidate the certification and compromise the screen integrity and insulation performance in a fire situation. Using one approved supplier guarantees that the system has been independently tested and accredited

Each system has been tested to BS EN 1634-1 and classified to BS EN 13501-2, confirming compliance with UK and European fire standards. These profiles incorporate fire-retardant inserts and intumescent seals, maintaining structural integrity and insulation during prolonged exposure to heat while allowing for slimline, elegant frames suitable for both internal partitions and external façades. Aluprof fire doors are high-performance aluminium door systems designed to provide superior fire resistance while maintaining modern aesthetics and functionality. Engineered using advanced thermal insulation and robust materials, these doors meet stringent European fire protection standards and also offer resistance to EI30, EI60, and EI120, ensuring

At Capital Quarter 2 in Cardiff, Aluprof’s internal fire-rated aluminium screen systems were specified to deliver both safety and aesthetic excellence. The project required a high-performance glazed partitioning solution capable of providing effective fire compartmentation without compromising on natural light or visual connectivity. Aluprof’s MB-SR50N EFEKT system was specified for its proven fire resistance of up to EI60, offering robust integrity and insulation performance in line with UK Building Regulations and BS EN 13501-2 standards. The MB-SR50N EFEKT curtain wall system used internally, features thermally broken aluminium profiles with fire-resistant insulation inserts placed inside the frame to maintain temperature stability during exposure to fire. was envisioned as an accessible and inclusive public space at the heart of the city. The project includes a multipurpose hall, fitness and sports facilities, a library, kiosk, cafe, retail units, market and fair areas, educational workshops and classrooms, an open air cinema, children’s playgrounds, and a parking structure for 366 vehicles. In Kocaeli, a city shaped by productive and industrial dynamics, the project addresses the lack of high quality public spaces and the need for a central civic focal point capable of gathering urban energy.

After the relocation of the former market, the area was used as a parking lot. Through the vision of Ozer Urger Architecture, it has now been redefined, opening a new chapter in the city’s collective memory. Located in the city center and surrounded by key public buildings with direct connections to public transportation, the square becomes a democratic ground accessible to all. Ozer Urger Architecture reinterprets the square not as an empty void but as an urban generator, a space that fuels social interaction, cultural continuity, and everyday activity. Redefining the idea of a square for everyone, the design brings together the concepts of a city stage,

POWERS OF TEN COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED KASHDAN-BROWN ARCHITECTS REACHES FOR THE SKY WITH STERLINGOSB ZERO As the annual SterlingOSB Zero/RIBAJ competition celebrated its 10th anniversary, the 2025 competition entitled Powers of Ten, challenged architects to explore the principles of scale. Entrants were unrestricted by building standards and were free to play with the concept of scale and design a structure from competition sponsor West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero. This year’s competition winner, Kashdan-Brown Architects, imagined a 1:10 scale model reconstruction of the 140-metre-high missing spire of Malmesbury Abbey in Wiltshire. Here Julian Kashdan-Brown talks about his winning entry and what SterlingOSB Zero provides architects. Q. What inspired your design for the competition? The brief this year was very much about scale, and scale is an interesting thing looking back into the past at some enormous edifices. Of course, with the economy with which we must build today, it’s impossible to build to the kind of scale common previously. I was interested in trying to produce a piece at a small scale; but which evoked the idea of the grand scale of buildings of the past. That’s what eventually inspired the idea to recreate the fallen part of Malmesbury Abbey which is, of course, ten times the size of the OSB version that we designed ourselves. Q. What are some of the common challenges you face in meeting sustainability targets? It is increasingly difficult to meet sustainability targets today. To begin with, it was about the nature of the material that you were specifying and how that material might be produced; and how much energy is consumed in doing that. Now it’s about whole life cycle costings as well. It is, therefore, important to consider every aspect of the material. In the case of SterlingOSB Zero, it’s not just the timber that is within; it’s the way in which it is bonded together; and the sources from which those come and the degree of transportation involved. We need to consider all these points now when we specify materials for buildings. Q. How has designing with SterlingOSB Zero informed your view as a material regarding its versatility and aesthetic? With SterlingOSB Zero, I probably have more experience of it than many architects might have as I teach architecture and engineering students at

the University of Bath. One or two of the projects, particularly the first project they are involved in, is often centred around building something with a certain number of materials. One of these is OSB. I have seen these group projects come to fruition over the last decade and I’ve seen many students master the workability of OSB and the ways in which they might be able to join the board with other materials as well. I think that’s informed my understanding of the degree of accuracy that you can achieve with the material and the way it’s cut, and the way it’s bonded to other materials as well. It’s been particularly helpful for me.

FIREFLY ® PHOENIX CONTINUES TO PROTECT HOME BARGAINS CHAIN

MARMOX THERMOBLOCKS INSULATE TUDOR RECONSTRUCTION

As value-for-money drives Home Bargains’ popularity, the retailer continues expanding, including a new store at Camborne Retail Park, Cornwall. FIREFLY® products have again been specified to protect staff and customers.

As value for money makes the Home Bargains brand an increasingly popular choice with price conscious shoppers, the national retailer is continuing to increase its coverage by building new stores in locations such as Camborne in Cornwall, with products from the FIREFLY® range repeatedly being included in the specification to help ensure the safety of staff and customers. The existing 9,150sq ft warehouse and sales floor on the Camborne Retail Park is being refurbished by Oakhurst (Southport) Ltd. with WPL Consulting filling the role of project architect. The Phoenix Vertical, Collaroll and ancillary FIREFLY® products have been used to create a semi-permanent fire barrier that is suspended from the underside of the pitched, metal decked roof.

The 9,150 sq ft warehouse and sales floor is being refurbished by Oakhurst (Southport) Ltd., with WPL Consulting as project architect. Phoenix Vertical, Collaroll, and ancillary FIREFLY® products create a semi-permanent fire and smoke barrier suspended beneath the pitched, metal-decked roof. Installation of the 60-minute rated system was carried out by S R Shopfitting over just a few days in early July, ahead of the store’s official opening on August 22. Working from hydraulic platforms, the lightweight barrier was fixed to steel angles bolted to the roof, with overlaps sealed using FIREFLY® High Temperature Adhesive and butt joints stapled. Collaroll wrapped high-level steel beams, while ablative batts filled voids under the soffit. Oakhurst Site Manager Kerry Humphrey said: “FIREFLY® products are far easier to install than bulky rock mineral wool, lightweight, and simple to fix — a brilliant system.” The range, made from woven and non-woven glass, provides certified flame, smoke, and heat protection in vertical or horizontal applications.

The lightweight Phoenix fire barrier was fixed to sections of steel angle bolted onto the roof members, with all overlaps sealed using FIREFLY® High Temperature Adhesive, while butt joints were fixed using stainless steel staples. While the Collaroll was used to wrap the high-level steel beams, the manufacturer’s ablative batts – introduced into the range last year to assist with tasks like creating protected zones – fill voids beneath the soffit level. Manufactured from woven and non-woven glass, the FIREFLY® range is designed to optimise resistance to flame and smoke as

LIT LIGHTING DESIGN AWARDS 2025 CELEBRATING THE POWER OF LIGHT ACROSS 62 COUNTRIES From poetic acts of remembrance in Brazil to ethereal light installations in Seoul and visionary student projects in Venice, the LIT Lighting Design Awards 2025 once again celebrated the extraordinary creativity and conscience of the global lighting community. With over 1,000 entries from 62 countries, this year’s winners prove that light remains one of the most powerful tools to shape how we see, feel, and connect with the world. The Architectural Lighting Design of the Year, Memorial Brumadinho by Atiaîa Lighting Design, is a deeply human project that transforms tragedy into collective memory. Designed by Mariana Novaes and her team in collaboration with Gustavo Penna Arquiteto e Associados, the memorial honours the 272 victims of the 2019 dam collapse in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Through a choreography of darkness and illumination, visitors are guided through groves, reflecting pools, and quiet spaces that evoke empathy and remembrance. Every beam of light tells a story of loss, resilience, and resistance against oblivion.

The Architectural Lighting Design of the Year, Memorial Brumadinho by Atiaîa Lighting Design, is a deeply human project that transforms tragedy into collective memory.

In Seoul, Studio JT’s Arc ZERO: Eclipse was named Entertainment Lighting Design of the Year, redefining how we perceive light, atmosphere, and reflection. The eight-meter stainless-steel ring floats above a still pool, its form completed by mist and light that respond to the changing air. Conceived by artist James Tapscott, the installation hovers between sculpture and phenomenon, a moment of quiet coexistence between technology and nature visible even from the city’s skyline. The Lighting Product Design of the Year, Amphora by One to One by Martin Döller, pays tribute to the ancient vessels that once carried oil and wine. Cast in solid bronze and finished with a distinctive patina, each modular chandelier is both timeless and adaptable. With its sculptural seed-pod silhouette and adjustable light direction, Amphora embodies the perfect union of craftsmanship, sustainability, and emotion, a piece that feels as if it has grown naturally within its architectural setting.

Emerging lighting designers also shone bright this year. Flight into Shadow, created by students from the Deggendorf Institute of Technology, explores how light shapes perception, comfort, and relief in overheated urban environments. Presented during the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 as part of the Keep Cool! initiative, the project transforms the ephemeral dance of sunlight through leaves into an architectural experience, a living meditation on adaptation in a warming world. Meanwhile, Yuxin Luo, from the ArtCenter College of Design, earned Emerging Lighting Product Designer of the Year with CinderGlow, a pendant inspired by the California wildfires. Crafted from recycled wood filament, the piece transforms burned material into a source of warmth and beauty, a poetic metaphor for regeneration and hope. This year’s Spotlight Prize was awarded to GreenLamp, a Swiss non-profit empowering women and midwives across rural Ethiopia through its three-pillar approach: LEARN | LIGHT | LEAD. Since 2012, GreenLamp has improved maternal healthcare for over 1.6 million women by providing solar-powered lighting and solar equipment for safe childbirth. The 2025 award supports their upcoming expansion by providing lighting infrastructure and equipment to two additional rural clinics. Each new solar lighting package includes 100watt solar panels, vaccine refrigerators, LED lighting kits, fetal Doppler monitors, thermometers, headlamps for midwives, and complete installation, maintenance,

and training support, ensuring sustainable, reliable light where it is needed most. In the words of Joanna Boyd, President of GreenLamp: “We are deeply honoured to receive the 2025 Spotlight Award from LIT Lighting Design Awards. This recognition highlights the importance of reliable, sustainable energy for women’s health. With every solar system we install, we help ensure that women can give birth safely, midwives can work with dignity, and communities can thrive. Thank you, LIT Lighting Design Awards, for supporting our mission to create brighter futures for women and babies in Ethiopia.”

At the pinnacle of this year’s celebration stands the Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring Suzan Tillotson, Founder and President of Tillotson Design Associates. A pioneer whose projects, including The Broad in Los Angeles, The Shed in New York, and Bloomberg’s European Headquarters in London, have defined the contemporary architectural landscape, Tillotson has illuminated some of the world’s most iconic cultural landmarks with a sensitivity that balances precision, art, and humanity.

As Astrid Hébert, Co-Founder of the LIT Lighting Design Awards, reflects: “This year’s winners remind us that light has no borders; it speaks every language and touches every life. We’ve seen extraordinary projects from every corner of the world, each one proving that lighting design is a catalyst for empathy, connection, and change. Our two special prizes this year, dedicated to Suzan Tillotson and GreenLamp, celebrate women whose vision and compassion illuminate far beyond their work. Their achievements remind us we do this to celebrate light, not just as a design element, but as a force for humanity. We look forward to celebrating these remarkable talents together at the LIT Lighting Design Awards Ceremony in early summer 2026. To discover the complete list of LIT Lighting Design Awards 2025 winners and learn more about their outstanding work, please visit litawards.com/winners. These exceptional designers are shaping the future of lighting and continue to inspire innovation across the globe.

Reflecting on her recognition, Suzan Tillotson shared: “I’ve been fortunate to spend my life doing something I love, surrounded by people who share the same passion for light and design. My hope is that this recognition inspires young people to see lighting as the incredible and meaningful profession that it is.” Behind these remarkable achievements stands a distinguished LIT Lighting Design Awards jury, a collective of global leaders and innovators shaping the future of light. Among them are Florence Lam, Arup Fellow and Visiting Professor at The Bartlett UCL; Sally Storey, Creative Director at John Cullen Lighting; Claudia Paz, Founder of Claudia Paz Lighting Studio in Peru; Tupac Martir, multidisciplinary artist and Founder of Satore Studio; Amit Gupta, Founder and Editor-inChief of STIR; Thiago Gaya, Publisher of L+D Magazine and Founder of LEDforum Brazil; John (Randy) Reid, Editor of designing lighting (dl); and Mary RushtonBeales, Principal at Lighting Design House in the UK. BUILDING FOR WATER SECURITY FUTURE-PROOFING BRITAIN’S WATER BEHAVIOUR Following the dry summer of 2025, the Environment Agency has warned that even with average winter rainfall some areas in Britain will still be in drought next spring. The recent weather pattern variations can only compound the existing concerns about the anticipated UK water deficit. To offset the predicted daily deficit of 4017 mega litres per day by 2050, major water companies have been developing plans to upgrade the UKs water supply and reduce current usage from 150 litres per person per day to 110. Whilst smart meters are seen as a significant part of the solution to reducing domestic water usage, Thames Water have recorded post installation savings of 12-17% , most major UK water companies have announced their plans for Advanced metering infrastructure, where all new connections or meters will replaced with the latest generation of smart meters. Groundbreaker is an insulated, surface mounted enclosure for a secure water management system and smart water meter. This locates the meter above ground, providing a better environment for smart technology over traditional underground boundary boxes, extends signal transmission and allows easy meter exchange. The unique location of the Groundbreaker water management system future proofs the network and minimises the risk of developing future leaks. The position of the meter allows for an unjointed water supply, hence maintaining the integrity of the supply. The use of an uninterrupted supply has been recognised as best practice by Water UK and the Home Builders Federation. In addition to new developments, Groundbreaker is ideal for redevelopment or refurbishment of properties

The unique location of the Groundbreaker water management system future proofs the network and minimises the risk of developing future leaks.

that have architectural or water supply structures that make traditional metering options impractical. This point of entry location makes it the perfect solution for installation in existing properties with shared supply or challenging architecture. Its location on the building also means no street furniture or liability in the highway. To further improve home water efficiency, major water companies are also rolling out flow regulating devices, such as Groundbreaker’s LoFlo®. These modulate the level of flow entering premises – regardless of network pressure, meaning a reduction in the level of water used by customers when ‘variable use’ appliances (i.e., showers, taps, hosepipes). As the flow of water into the premises is limited, then the amount used by the customer is also limited – but without providing a degradation of service, and more importantly not requiring any intervention or behavioural change on the part of the customer. Whether it’s new build or redevelopment, Groundbreaker has a range of products to design in water efficient homes. For further product details visit www.groundbreaker.co.uk

Alternatively, the intensive provides a rich, opaque hue that can dramatically alter a piece, conceal the grain while preserving the tactile and natural feel of the wood beneath. This flexibility enables homeowners and designers to customize the finish to realise their precise vision, whether it’s a classic, rustic style or a striking, modern look. When it comes to the choice of colours you really are spoilt for choice. Both the transparent and intensive finish can be effortlessly mixed to any RAL, NCS, BS4800 colours using the Osmo Tinting System. FUTUREBUILD SHOW PREVIEW

INNOVATION AT THE HEART OF FUTUREBUILD 2026 FUTUREBUILD 2026 (3-5 MARCH AT EXCEL LONDON) WILL BE A PLATFORM FOR AMPLIFYING THE INNOVATION THAT’S BEING SPURRED TO SUPPORT THE SECTOR IN ADDRESSING ITS SUSTAINABILITY AMBITIONS Leading with the theme ‘Connect’, a series of new show features are being introduced to enhance purposeful collaboration - bringing together thousands of decision-makers dedicated to finding viable solutions that can help surmount the implications of tightening design and safety standards, while driving down whole life carbon costs.

Connecting decision-makers As attendees navigate how to successfully deliver on initiatives including the London Plan, Awaab’s Law, ever stringent safety regulations and the impending construction products reform, the calibre of 2026 exhibitors - combined with a carefully curated conference and knowledge programme - is paving the way for the next instalment to be Futurebuild’s most inspirational yet. “Each year, Futurebuild explores the big themes shaping our future. In 2026, we’re calling time on business as usual,” says Martin Hurn, Futurebuild Event Director. “Our industry doesn’t just need new ideas. It needs to build resilience, prioritise reuse and embrace regenerative design. These ‘three Rs’ will define the conversations at Futurebuild and support decision-makers in striving for long-term systems change, alongside dealing with more immediate regulatory reform.”

Supporting cross-sector collaboration The reimagined format and floorplan includes a new Local Authority Collaboration hub alongside the National Retrofit Conference. This will be a dedicated area for representatives across the public and private sectors to connect and better understand how the built environment can enhance projects for both people and place. The focus will be on advances being made in the delivery of healthier, more efficient homes - in tandem with the continuing commitment to decarbonisation. Wider environmental and resource concerns will also be major talking points on Futurebuild’s main conference arena as industry representatives champion the sector’s growing recycling and reuse momentum - exploring how circularity can be embedded and sharing pioneering examples in action.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 32

Achieving resilience through regenerative design and reuse This year, ‘The 3Rs’ is an overarching theme for the event’s esteemed knowledge programme. The Futurebuild Arena Conference will see industry bodies, government figures and high profile change makers take to the stage to rally for the three fundamentals for the future of the built environment: reuse, resilience and regenerative design. Futurebuild partners, including The Circular Economy Task Force, ACAN!, The Circular Economy Institute and Architects Declare are involved in shaping these conversations. Alongside the architect, academic and authority on circular economy thinking, Duncan Baker-Brown, who will be a headline key speaker reinforcing that critical resilience will only come by taking a circular economy approach with reuse at its heart.

Pushing boundaries with heavyweight partners Several leading trade bodies including RIBA, CIBSE, CIOB and UKGBC are also instrumental in pulling together a knowledge programme that promises to be as provocative and informative as ever. Featuring 550+ speakers, 133 hours of CPD-accredited content and sessions compiled by over 60 industry partners and associations, Futurebuild’s Arena Conference, National Retrofit Conference and seminar stages attract audiences invested in making genuine progress happen.

FUTUREBUILD SHOW PREVIEW

We connect people, ideas and solutions in ways that accelerate the shift to a more sustainable, resilient and regenerative future.

With several influential supply chain associations - including the Heat Pumps Association (HPA), UK District Energy Association (UKDEA), The Concrete Centre, 540 World and PassivHaus Trust - also invited to execute a series of practical seminar ‘stage takeovers’, Futurebuild 2026 is continuing to deliver content brought together by the industry, for the industry - bringing fresh thinking to the fore with a particular emphasis on dissecting the role of innovation.

Spotlighting innovation “Innovation will inevitably be central to the discussion but we’ll be flipping the script to explore how we can better use existing knowledge and the need for social transformation, rather than solely exploring novel technical solutions,” adds Martin Hurn. “Futurebuild is where mission meets market. We’re not just a conference or a showcase. We’re a platform for delivery. We connect people, ideas and solutions in ways that accelerate the shift to a more sustainable, resilient and regenerative future.” By uniting the entire supply chain, Futurebuild is uniquely placed to engage representatives ranging from senior specifiers and architects through to major contractors and developers - all actively looking for innovative ideas to secure and successfully deliver their projects.

Connecting ideas and impact To this end, the Innovation Trail, a curated path showcasing products and systems with measurable sustainability impact, will be spotlighting the biggest breakthroughs, featuring brands including Dimplex, Anzen Walls, The Concrete Centre, 7 Steel UK and ZapCarbon.

The return of the Big Innovation Pitch and Big Retrofit Challenge are also hotly anticipated to highlight transformative thinking as shortlisted nominees present ingenious solutions designed to support the transition to a more sustainable built environment. Hidden Limits: Introducing the Sugatsune SAS-V Concealed Door Restrictor Combining practical benefits with aesthetic elegance is very much the Sugatsune way. Over the years, we’ve applied this principle to most aspects of door motion - concealed hinges, soft close dampers, minimalist sliding rails, pocket door systems and more. All have one overarching objective in common - to introduce a premium level of control in how doors function, whilst giving interior and architectural designers products that respect the look as well as the function. Continuing the trend is the SAS-V concealed door restrictor. A concealed door restrictor is a type of overhead arm stopper that limits how far a door can open. They are used to prevent doors swinging into objects and causing accidents. And as the name suggests, a concealed restrictor is designed to be hidden from view when the door is closed, or at least have a very minimal visible profile. With the SAS-V, we’ve pushed the envelope on both control and appearance - and thrown in healthy doses of covenience, flexibility and durability, too. All SAS-V stops allow you to adjust the limitation angle up to 110o with a simple slider. Installation is equally simple, with a slim mortised groove required on top of the door, and an arm screwed to the frame and ceiling. The two sections simply slide together, and the non-handed design means it can be installed on left- and right-hand opening doors. The SAS-V comes in hold and nonhold types. The hold stops keep the

door open at the specified maximum angle, while the no-hold types simply prevent the door opening any further. There are six restrictors of each type, making 12 products in total - three of each for two different door widths (580mm to 900mm, and 800mm to 1100mm), and in three different finishes - white, black and warm grey. These colour options further help the restrictor’s slim profile blend seamlessly into its surroundings when closed. Like all of our architectural components, SAS-V stays are also built to last. Underneath the coloured finishes, all components are precision engineered from stainless steel. The model passed 300k cycles in stress testing, promising years of flawless use in real-world installations. The maximum suitable door weight for all stops in the range is 50kg.

The Perfect Partner SAS-V restrictors can be installed on their own to control the opening angle of most interior doors. They can also be paired with other Sugatsune products to further extend the functionality - and the control, and the convenience. For example, the SAS-V makes a perfect companion for the LDD-V, our concealed soft-

close damper for standard interior doors. Fitted with our award-winning Lapcon adjustable damper, the LDD-V range delivers premium soft, silent close control for interior doors using a mechanism that ‘catches’ a door late in its swing. This avoids the need for a door closer arm to control the motion of a door throughout its swing, leaving room for the SAS-V to manage the opening angle, and perhaps hold the door in its open position. Then you have the reassurance of the LDD-V taking over the back swing and bringing the door to a smooth, controlled close. Another ideal match for the SAS-V is our game-changing HES concealed hinge series. If you take flawless finishes in your door furniture seriously, a HES hinge is a must-have. With the most comprehensive range of concealed hinge options for both cabinet and interior doors available anywhere on the market, the HES series makes visible hinges a thing of the past. From that base, you can add equally discreet components like the SAS-V and LDD-V to add control to the pristine appearance - that perfect balance of looks and function. The Sugatsune way.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

We conceived Sutton Tower as a study in bridging the old and new Gotham, and through this approach, the goal of timelessness and permanence. Designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen, Sutton Tower exemplifies a modern interpretation of classic New York elegance and reflects Juul-Hansen’s commitment to enduring quality and timeless beauty. Rising 850 feet, the tower features a Bavarian limestone façade from base to crown, a feat rarely seen in today’s construction, and harkens back to a bygone era of architecture with its unparalleled craftsmanship. Its exterior is divided into two sections: the lower portion mirrors the charm of the historic surrounding neighbourhood, while the upper portion uses expansive glass to emphasize the impressive scale and light. A champagne-coloured crown with geometric facets adds a dynamic element to the skyline. “We conceived Sutton Tower as a study in bridging the old and new Gotham, and through this approach, the goal of timelessness and permanence,” said Thomas Juul-Hansen, Founder and Principal of Thomas JuulHansen, LLC. “Our goal was to bring warmth and human scale to the skyscraper form through natural materials and sculptural detail. The result is a building that feels calm, enduring, and intrinsically connected to its surroundings.”

Juul-Hansen’s design carries this hand-crafted approach inside the building. Each of the 120 corner residences—ranging from one to five bedrooms— features at least two exposures and expansive floorto-ceiling windows framing sweeping views of the East River, Midtown skyline, and beyond. Interiors boast wide-plank oak flooring, ebonized oak entry doors, and custom wainscoting. Primary bathrooms feature radiant-heated floors, Laufen soaking tubs, Waterworks fixtures, bookmatched Calacatta Gold slab floors and backsplashes, and sinks carved from single blocks of Bianco Dolomiti marble. Kitchens are anchored by Statuarietto marble islands, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and custom Italian cabinetry. A potentially catastrophic blaze, which consumed the garage containing a parked vehicle adjoining a £1M house in rural Surrey, was stopped in its tracks thanks to the use of 12mm A1 non combustible Magply being chosen as the render substrate board on the contract, the property was constructed using a Structurally Insulated Panel system construction (SIP) with A1 non-combustible Magply being used on the exterior of the building as the substrate panel for the proprietary render system. Magply is a multi-use A1 non-combustible board with an impressive library of testing for fire applications, in the offsite and timber frame sector the board is designed and specified to contain fire and support the emergency service with added crucial time!

Although the emergency services were quick to attend the fire, which happened in August, it had taken sufficient hold that the large timber framed garage was totally destroyed with just some sections of the frame still standing. However, the gable end to the house which features a relatively thin, weatherproof finish of the silica-based K-Rend suffered only surface damage. Remarkably, although areas of the render had spa I led off, the 12mm Magply boards underneath had not even charred while they had fully protected the SIPs structure beneath: a fact borne out by the system supplier, Glasford SI Ps, which took core samples to confirm the continued integrity of the insulated sandwich panels which are faced by OSB.

The fire-resistant qualities of the Magply boards saved the day. We had utilised Magply as a render-backer on a number of projects before being awarded the contract to apply K-Rend to the half dozen homes here and have always been very pleased with the performance. It is an easy board to cut and fix, while we can now definitely confirm to clients that it fully complies with the fire requirements for domestic and commercial buildings. The Contracts Manager for Fullers Plastering, James Corlet

The home’s owner confirmed: “The Magply boards stood up extremely well: although the K-Rend which took the full brunt of the heat cannot be easily removed. So, though the Magply base boards did an absolutely firstclass job they are going to be replaced as a precaution before the gable end wall is rerendered and we hope the repairs will only take eight weeks to complete - mainly down to the lead time for a couple of replacement windows to be delivered:’ Fullers Plastering is based in nearby Brighton and is an approved applicator for a variety of render systems, whose manufacturers correspondingly recognise Magply as being a suitable substrate or carrier, in this case credit must be giving to James Corlett of fullers plastering for requesting John Malone National sales manager of I PP/ MAG PLY to attend the contract prior to construction to discuss the use of Magply as a render substrate board, in this case Magply was not part of the fire protection build up however Magply over performed and made the difference when needed.

“

“

Magply board is BBA certified and tested with the leading testing houses in the UK and testing is an ongoing project ensuring our board is tested right up to stringent levels required, Magply is an magnesium Oxysulphate board and day to day we do get asked questions regarding MgO board, we as a business never want to see our board perform in real life fire situations however it happens and thankfully Magply has done its job in this case and a lesser board may not have performed the same. For more information on Magply board we have a nationwide sales team in the uk and Ireland and our board is available across the uk and Ireland. Magply is widely specified across the industry from modular to timber frame the board is also specified as part of the build-up for cladding systems on high rise properties, as well as pattress boards to carry bathroom or kitchen fittings for the fit-out

FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY

A CASE STUDY WHY ARCHITECTS SHOULD CARE WHO THEY TRUST In architecture, elegance isn’t achieved through happenstance; it’s built through the smart selection of collaborators. When a design relies on safety-critical detailing, choosing the wrong supplier is akin to adding a weak link to a steel chain. The luxury Kingswood residences prove the point. Designed by Studio SB Architecture and delivered by VEDA Homes, these private estate properties strike a balance between wellness, light, and serenity. As striking as the timber-framed glazed screens are, their role went beyond visual appeal. They had to meet strict fire protection demands.

The Quiet Power of Expertise Fire Glass didn’t just deliver glass; they advised on how to make it work. Five bespoke EI30-rated glazed screens were engineered, supplied, and installed across three properties, each one seamlessly integrated into certified timber frameworks that embody the homes’ calming aesthetic. The specification; EI30 16mm Pyrobel, wasn’t chosen because it sounded impressive. It delivered FD30/30 performance while preserving transparency, warmth, and the soft visual language the architect intended. Astragal bars were added to maintain a homely style without compromising compliance. The success of this solution relied on early engagement with the broader project team, allowing design objectives and fire safety performance to be addressed together.

Specifying fully tested, traceable fire-rated glass ensures performance and accountability when it matters most. A Good Supplier Protects the Design as Much as the Building Glass that isn’t properly certified may look acceptable at first, but it quickly becomes a liability when compliance or installation issues emerge. Specifying fully tested, traceable fire-rated glass ensures performance and accountability when it matters most. Fire Glass with the project team to ensure: • Screens aligned with the fire strategy plans • The finish supported the design intent • Performance wasn’t sacrificed for appearance That level of involvement didn’t just deliver a product; it safeguarded the architecture, the build programme, and compliance. As James Duff, Glazing Manager, put it: “Our goal was to create a fire-safe solution that complements the architect’s nature-inspired vision, not compete with it. The result is understated luxury with built-in protection.”

So Why Trust Matters Because when fire safety meets design ambition, success depends on the right partners – the ones who collaborate early, offer honest advice, and stay committed to ensuring execution aligns with intent. The Kingswood residences don’t just look good because of great drawings; they work because builders, designers, and Fire Glass worked together to get it right. That’s the difference between a supplier and a trusted expert. FIRE GLASS 0121 667 9089 info@fireglassuk.com www.fireglassuk.com #trusttheexperts #weprotectwhatmatters

KALZIP CROWNS DUBLIN’S NCH KALZIP PROVIDES SOLUTION FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART HEALTHCARE DEVELOPMENTS Kalzip has played a key role in one of Europe’s largest and most technically complex healthcare developments, the New Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Dublin. Situated on the St James’s Hospital campus, this €1.7 billion national facility consolidates three existing children’s hospitals, Crumlin, Temple Street, and Tallaght, into a single, stateof-the-art institution that sets a new benchmark for paediatric care in Ireland and beyond. One of the most striking architectural features is the sweeping, double-curved roof that floats above the building like a protective canopy. It was this complex roofscape that required a technically sophisticated and visually refined solution, making Kalzip a natural choice. Kalzip supplied approximately 4,200 square metres of Kalzip 65/400 standing seam aluminium profile, fabricated from mill-finish stucco-embossed. This textured finish offers a refined appearance while also mitigating glare and enhancing weathering performance over time. Trevor Smyth, National Sales Manager at Kalzip, said: “To accommodate the roof’s dramatic form, Kalzip engineered a bespoke solution involving a combination of parallel-curved and tapered curved sheets, fabricated using mobile roll-forming equipment directly on-site. The roof panels were rolled and shaped on the Level 4 slab, minimising handling and reducing transport risk. These precisely formed aluminium sheets were fixed onto a substructure of over 650 tonnes of curved, hot dip galvanized structural steelwork, engineered and installed by KH Engineering.” Architecturally, the design of the hospital is both visionary and highly contextual. Lead architect BDP created a structure that is simultaneously monumental and sensitive to its urban surroundings. Its form steps down the sloping site, while its curved shapes, generous use of glass, and carefully selected natural materials promote transparency, openness, and healing. At its heart lies a series of oval ward pavilions, elevated above a robust stone-clad base, surrounded by landscaped terraces and courtyards. The façade system integrates granite rainscreen cladding at lower levels with unitised curtain walling and glazed screens at the upper levels, creating a dynamic and welcoming civic presence. Kalzip’s system not only met the aesthetic ambitions of the design team but also delivered on the hospital’s demanding technical requirements. The standing seam construction ensures long-term watertightness, resistance to extreme weather, and reduced maintenance over the building’s lifespan, crucial for a 24/7, high-occupancy facility. Furthermore, the

ARCHETECH - PAGE 48

aluminium material’s inherent corrosion resistance and recyclability support the project’s sustainability ambitions, with the recycling ratio for Stucco achieving up to 98%. The hospital has been designed to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards and features a wide range of passive and active energy strategies, including natural ventilation, advanced glazing, and a large-scale green roof system. Beneath the Kalzip roof lies an innovative landscape of intensive green roofs and public terraces, supporting both biodiversity and stormwater management. The roofing system integrates with these planted areas to ensure drainage continuity and waterproofing integrity. In total, the roofscape handles over 35,000 square metres of coverage and incorporates a water retention system capable of managing around 1,500 cubic metres of stormwater, adding a further layer of climate resilience to the project. Architects OCMA said: “The new hospital sits comfortably within the existing St. James’s Hospital campus, the first views of the hospital being the distinctive oval wards sitting above a pavilion set in a therapeutic elevated rooftop garden. The garden is an integral part of the design as it will give a tangible sense of this being a special place – one for children and young people, elevated above the world of adults.” Kalzip’s involvement in the New Children’s Hospital represents a commitment to supporting the most forward-thinking architectural projects with precision, performance, and partnership. By providing a roofing system that combines aesthetic excellence with technical reliability, Kalzip has helped realise an iconic civic building, one that embodies innovation, compassion, and a brighter future for children and families across Ireland. THE HARBOUR’S ESSENCE REDEFINING LUXURY ACCOMMODATION THROUGH INNOVATIVE DESIGN IN HONG KONG W Interiors, a Hong Kong firm, completed this redesign in phases to limit disruption to hotel operations. The work covers guest rooms, common areas, and event spaces. Materials selected include those sourced locally, such as wood and textiles from regional suppliers. These choices support construction that meets accepted environmental guidelines. The design also aims to lower ongoing costs through efficient layouts and lighting. The project responds to the needs of different guests, including business travellers, wedding groups, and families. Spaces are arranged to allow for both private use and group activities. For example, common areas feature seating that accommodates small meetings or larger gatherings. Rooms include work desks and storage that fit varied travel requirements.

Artworks by regional artists are placed in hallways and lounges to connect spaces to the district’s history.

Wanchai’s location near business centres and cultural sites influenced the layout. Views of the harbour inform the colour scheme, with shades of neutral tones used in walls and furnishings. Furniture is chosen for durability, with selections tested for longterm use in high-traffic areas.

Design approach W Interiors applies a minimalist style in the project. This involves clear lines and open layouts that highlight the building’s structure. Local craftsmanship appears in details like custom woodwork and fabric patterns drawn from Hong Kong traditions. Artworks by regional artists are placed in hallways and lounges to connect spaces to the district’s history.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

The firm worked with hotel staff during the process. Input from operations teams shaped features like adjustable lighting in event rooms. Ventilation systems were updated to improve air quality while reducing energy use. These changes align with standards for sustainable building practices. “This project builds on our experience at the site,” said Wayne Chan, founder and design director of W Interiors. “It focuses on practical spaces that reflect the area’s character and support daily hotel functions.”

Location and context The Harbourview Hotel sits in Wanchai, a district known for its mix of commercial activity and cultural landmarks. The redesign positions the hotel to serve visitors arriving for conferences or events. Accessibility to transport links was considered in path designs within the building. Completion of the project occurred over several months, with final installations in early 2025. Guests can now use the updated spaces, which include refreshed bathrooms with water-efficient fixtures. Public reviews of the changes will appear in the coming weeks through hotel channels. This initiative demonstrates W Interiors’ method of adapting designs to existing structures. By reusing elements from prior phases, the firm reduced material

needs. The overall result provides functional areas that align with the hotel’s role in the community. For details on the project or firm, visit the W Interiors website or contact the Hong Kong office. www.w-interiors.co Photos: Ken Wong Photography

ARDBEG HOUSE OPENS WITH ACCESSIBLE LUXURY BRIDGING DESIGN AND ACCESSIBILITY WITH STANNAH’S STAIRLIFT AT LUXURY ISLAY HOTEL Ardbeg House, a boutique luxury hotel on the picturesque island of Islay, Scotland, has opened its doors as a truly immersive whisky and hospitality experience, with a newly installed Stannah Stairiser CR2 inclined platform lift providing guests with full accessibility to upper floors.

The work Designed in collaboration with Russell Sage Studio, Ardbeg House honours the heritage of Ardbeg while creating immersive spaces that reflect the island’s culture and the distillery’s iconic history. Over 20 local and Scottish architects contributed to weaving Ardbeg’s story into the hotel’s design, which also involved seamlessly integrating the Stannah Stairiser CR2 with customised solutions. Stannah Lifts collaborated closely with Russell Sage Studio and main contractor Thomas Johnstone to supply a custom lift solution that met both the functional and aesthetic requirements.

The goal was to provide safe and reliable access for wheelchair users without disrupting the visual appeal of the hotel interiors. To achieve this, a bespoke colour was selected for the platform lift, ensuring it blended seamlessly with the surrounding walls and décor.

The Challenge

The results

The hotel required a custom solution to provide disabled access to its upper floors, which presented three main challenges. Addressing space constraints was a challenge. The hotel had no space to accommodate a passenger lift, so an inclined platform lift was the best option. However, the staircase area was small, requiring a compact design. Following a detailed assessment of the space, a Stannah CR2 inclined platform lift was chosen as the ideal solution. The lift’s slimline design further minimised wall projection, and the platform folds neatly when not in use, preserving staircase space. The platform dimensions of 800mm by 1000mm comfortably accommodate a wheelchair and user, while raised ramps and safety barrier arms ensure secure and safe operation.

The Stairiser CR2 now provides safe and reliable access to the two upper floors of Ardbeg House, allowing all guests to enjoy the hotel’s immersive and unique experience. Equipped with remote call stations, wheelchair users can summon the lift independently from the top or bottom of the stairs, ensuring convenient operation.

Photos: Ben Shakespeare Photography

Designed for use on a curved rail, the Stairiser CR2 follows the natural flow of the staircase while keeping outward projection to a minimum. This innovative feature makes the Stairiser CR2 equally well suited for installations featuring a single turn, multiple landings or spiral configurations. To ensure the stairlift complemented the hotel’s rich Ardbeggian interiors, the rail and carriage were finished in a custom green paint specifically chosen to match the hotel’s décor. This carefully considered design decision allowed the lift to feel like a natural part of the space, making the lift an integral element of the storytelling and design. With the installation of the Stairiser CR2 completed in just two days, Ardbeg House continues to offer a worldclass whisky and hospitality experience that is now fully accessible to every guest. SCULPTURAL STAIRCASES ENGINEERED TO PERFECTION ELEVATING LUXURY ARCHITECTURE THROUGH BESPOKE PRECAST STAIR DESIGN For architects designing exceptional homes, the staircase is often the defining sculptural element - the point where structure, light and movement converge. Yet it is also one of the most complex features to deliver with accuracy, elegance and consistency. This is where Kallisto, part of Milbank Concrete Products, offers a solution that blends architectural impact with engineered precision. Kallisto creates fully bespoke luxury precast staircases for high-end residential projects. Working closely with architects, designers and premium developers, we form sweeping curves, helical structures and bold monolithic designs that are difficult to achieve through traditional on-site construction. Manufactured within a quality-controlled environment and delivered as a single precast unit, each staircase is craned into position and installed in just one day - ensuring perfect geometry and seamless integration within the build. For design teams working toward the Future Homes Standard, precast staircases offer meaningful benefits. Reduced onsite activity, consistent quality and optimised installation all support more efficient, lower-carbon building programmes. THE NEW ERA OF FLORIM GALLERY AN INTERVIEW WITH MATTEO NUNZIATI In a setting that celebrates design culture, Florim renews its dialogue with the world of architecture and interiors, reopening the doors of its Gallery to unveil a completely reimagined exhibition concept, developed in collaboration with architect Matteo Nunziati. At Florim’s headquarters, a multisensory installation spanning 9,000 square meters comes to life, an immersive space where material, light, and emotion blend to express the identity of the products in a fresh and engaging way. The project unfolds across four exhibition areas, with a central piazza acting as a vantage point over the surrounding microarchitectures, each one showcasing the aesthetic versatility and application potential of Florim’s collections.

What is Florim Gallery, how has the space changed, and what inspired the project? Florim Gallery is a multifunctional space covering 9,000 square meters, located at the company’s headquarters in Fiorano Modenese (MO) - Italy. Opened in 2013, the venue is spread over two floors. At its heart is a double-height central area designed to host large events, while the upper floor is dedicated to product displays. In late 2024, a renovation project was launched to rethink the exhibition concept and enhance the guest experience. The ground floor has maintained its role as an event and hospitality space open to the local community, but it has been reimagined with a more elegant and refined atmosphere. The first floor, on the other hand, underwent a complete restyling. This decision was driven by the profound transformation the world of ceramic surfaces has undergone in recent years: sizes have changed, with slabs now exceeding 3 meters, thicknesses now range from 3 to 20 mm, and the

technologies available to enhance both the aesthetic and technical performance of the products have advanced significantly. We realized that the way we showcase these materials needed to evolve too, to communicate more effectively with architects, interior designers, the real estate sector, and furniture manufacturers, who are the new key users of ceramic surfaces. That’s why we set out to create an immersive experience that tells the full story of the design potential of ceramics, a material now being used in entirely new ways, from kitchens and wardrobes to spas, shower trays, outdoor spaces, marine applications, and much more. In every setting, beauty meets functionality. Today, Florim Gallery stands as a manifesto of Italian know-how applied to the world of design.

What are the main innovations introduced in the restyling of the Gallery, and how is the new exhibition layout organized? The new exhibition concept embraces a dynamic and experimental language, marking a step forward in how ceramic products are presented, balancing aesthetics, functionality, and innovation. The layout unfolds along four main thematic paths, reflecting the core identities that define Florim’s design approach: Luxury, Creative, Architectural, and Contemporary. At the heart of each section is a central “piazza”, a space to pause and reflect, which acts as a starting point for

ARCHETECH - PAGE 62

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS discovering a series of full-scale micro-architectures that bring different design visions to life. These installations have been developed in collaboration with leading names in Italian design. Within these spaces, Florim’s brands and collections come together to offer versatile solutions: from ultra-thick technical slabs to the thinnest and most flexible curved surfaces, each material adapts to a wide range of design needs. The restyling also introduced four fully equipped co-working areas, conceived as collaborative spaces where professionals, designers, and the FLORIM team can come together to co-create and exchange ideas. Aesthetic consistency and high technical performance are woven into a narrative that goes far beyond the traditional concept of a showroom. This is a place to explore a new way of designing, one that’s driven by innovation, sustainability, and emotional impact.

How was the immersive visitor experience developed, and how does the dialogue between ceramic material, light, and architecture unfold? A masterful use of lighting and the integration of digital content come together to create a truly sensory experience. Light plays a central role in guiding visitors through the space, highlighting textures, shaping atmospheres, and enhancing every material detail. Visitors find themselves immersed in a striking, emotionally engaging setting, where a dynamic visual narrative brings each environment to life. The material becomes a form of language, and every

surface contributes to building a clear design vision. It’s a new kind of tool for those imagining the spaces of tomorrow. Here, ceramic is no longer just a material, it becomes an integral part of architecture, a system that evokes emotion and inspires new forms of creativity. Designed to suggest concrete, functional solutions, Florim Gallery weaves together aesthetic consistency and technical performance, going far beyond the traditional showroom concept. Because this is a space meant to explore a new approach to design, one shaped by innovative, sustainable surfaces capable of delivering genuine emotional impact.

DESIGNING INTELLIGENCE SMART INFRASTRUCTURE AS AN ARCHITECTURAL ADVANTAGE For today’s architects, technology is no longer an afterthought — it is a design material. Intelligent building infrastructure must now integrate as seamlessly as light, form, and texture. This is where Zennio delivers a decisive advantage. Engineered on the global KNX standard, Zennio provides a fully decentralized, interoperable platform that allows architects to design buildings that think, adapt, and respond. In commercial projects, Zennio enables granular control of lighting, HVAC, shading, and energy systems through a single intelligent backbone. This translates into optimized spatial performance, reduced energy loads, and data-driven operational insight — all without compromising architectural intent. In hospitality environments, Zennio technology empowers architects to create immersive, responsive guest experiences. Guest rooms, corridors, conference areas, and public spaces can be programmed with dynamic lighting scenes, personalized climate behaviour, and automated transitions that align with both aesthetic vision and functional demands. The technology remains invisible; the architecture remains pure. Zennio’s design philosophy speaks directly to architects. Ultra-slim touch interfaces, flush-mounted keypads, and a wide palette of finishes allow technological elements to become part of the material language of a space. Control surfaces are no longer hardware disruptions — they are architectural details. From an engineering perspective, Zennio gives architects freedom. Its modular architecture supports scalable

This flexibility allows architectural concepts to evolve without being constrained by technology. Zennio turns automation into an architectural tool — enabling smarter façades, adaptive interiors, and buildings that actively participate in the user experience. For architects designing the future of commercial and hotel environments, Zennio is not just technology — it is part of the architecture itself. www.zennio.co.uk

FLOORS THAT DON’T COST THE EARTH KARTA NAMED GLOBAL WINNER AT SBID INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS 2025 The flooring industry is at a turning point. For decades, the majority of resilient flooring has been made using plastics and petrochemical derivatives, carbon intensive to create and almost impossible to recycle at end of life. Karta was founded to subvert the norm, and, this year, that mission was recognised on a global stage. Karta’s Recycled Leather Series has been named Winner in the Product Design: Flooring & Floor Coverings category at the SBID International Design Awards 2025, one of the most respected design awards in the world. Judged by leading industry experts and shaped by a public vote, the accolade celebrates products that deliver design excellence while but improving the way we build and live. This award is a new milestone in proving what’s possible with sustainable surfaces. Every Karta floor begins with materials chosen for their renewability, circularity, and authenticity, beginning with the thousands of kilos of leather offcuts from the shoe and textiles industries sent to landfill each year. Through Karta, these fibres are re-engineered into a core element of each plank, forming a naturally-durable layer that retains the natural depth and warmth of real leather. Supporting this is a PEFC-certified wood fibre layer, made using discarded timber offcuts. A cork backing, harvested without felling a single tree, provides comfort underfoot and removes the need for additional underlay materials, reducing both installation time and environmental impact. Using patented super-high-definition digital print technology, every plank draws from an extensive timber library built over three decades by Ted Todd and Woodworks. Each design originates from a real floor, including rare timber reclaimed from buildings

of cultural significance, such as Winston Churchill’s Old War Office. With no repeats across 20 boards, Karta uniquely preserves the character of real wood. Finally, each floor is finished with Karta Plated®, a plastic-free natural resin topcoat that delivers AC5 performance in durability suited to busy commercial spaces, restaurants, workplaces, and contemporary homes. What sets Karta apart is its end-to-end approach to sustainability. Energy self-sufficient manufacturing, locally sourced raw materials, and reduced emissions across production and distribution mean that every stage is considered, measured, and improved. The SBID Award recognises this commitment. It acknowledges that design need not come at ecological cost, and that performance and sustainability can coexist in one product. Karta extends a genuine alternative to plastic-based flooring: one that prioritises planet-positive materials, reduces waste, and elevates the beauty of real timber in a new and future-focused format. CREATING SAFE, PROFESSIONAL DANCE ENVIRONMENTS ALL DANCE STUDENTS DESERVE TO DANCE ON A HARLEQUIN FLOOR Dancers can spend hours in the dance studio; it is their place of work and should provide a safe environment that is fit for purpose. Regardless of where a student chooses to study dance, it is essential to ensure that the learning environment is equipped to professional standards. The floor is a dancer’s most important tool; not only is it the canvas for their creativity, but it also provides protection against slips, falls, and long-term stress injuries. Experts in biomechanics have established a clear link between the quality of a floor and the likelihood of injury, demonstrating that a sprung floor with a consistent responsiveness and the correct degree of traction is essential. Experienced dancers can judge whether a floor feels right. When it does, they can focus entirely on their artistic performance free from concerns about their safety. This confidence stems from the assurance that they will not slip or fall, that lifts can be performed safely, and that the floor will consistently provide the right level of energy absorption on landing from jumps. Anyone specifying floors for dance should remember that, while dancers may not be the commissioning clients, they are the end users. Major dance companies, schools and universities understand this, which is why it is common practice to have their dancers “test” floors before making a final decision. It is a common misconception that a well-designed sports floor can meet the needs of dancers. However, there are critical differences between the requirements of dance and those of sports. Many sports demand a firm floor that enables predictable ball bounce, whereas dancers require greater shock absorption to protect their bodies, particularly when landing from jumps. A dance floor should be neither too rigid nor too soft. A hard floor can cause serious return shock waves, potentially leading to injuries or premature cartilage wear. Conversely, a floor that is too soft forces muscles and tendons to work harder, increasing the risk of strain. Additionally, excessively soft floors can pose a hazard for dancers due to the element of unpredictability.

THE BEAUTY OF PARK LANE FIREPLACES CRAFTED FROM GENUINE BATH STONE, EACH PARK LANE FIREPLACE FROM STONEWORLD STANDS AS A TIMELESS CENTREPIECE, WHERE WARMTH, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND DESIGN COME TOGETHER IN PERFECT BALANCE A fireplace has long been the heart of a home. It draws people in, anchors the room, and brings an undeniable sense of permanence. When executed in natural stone, that feeling is amplified, something about the texture, tone, and depth of the material speaks of heritage and craftsmanship. The Park Lane Fireplaces collection from Stoneworld captures exactly that: elegance carved from the earth, refined for modern living. Each surround is precision-sculpted from genuine Bath Stone, quarried exclusively from Stoneworld’s own Park Lane Mine in Wiltshire. This fine-grained British limestone is prized for its smooth consistency, warm hues, and remarkable durability. It’s a material with history, used in the country’s most distinguished architecture, and yet its soft, neutral tones make it equally at home in contemporary settings. The result is a fireplace that feels considered, never imposed; a natural fit within both period properties and cleanlined modern spaces. Every design within the Park Lane Collection has been created to express character through form. From the confident geometry of the Lacock and Combe models to the softer curves of the Methuen and Corsham, each piece brings its own personality to the space. But a statement fireplace isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it feels. The natural thermal properties of Bath Stone make it ideal for this purpose: durable, heat-resistant, and built to withstand both the intensity of the fire and the rhythm of everyday use. Each hearth and surround is crafted not only to be admired but to last, ageing gracefully as part of the home’s story. Stoneworld’s approach is collaborative and bespoke. The team works closely with you to ensure that each fireplace is perfectly proportioned and fits your home. From initial design sketches and stone selection to final fitting, every stage is handled with care and precision. Whether you’re restoring a Georgian townhouse or shaping a modern interior, a made-tomeasure Park Lane fireplace offers a focal point that feels integrated, not added. The collection’s versatility allows you to create something deeply personal, a fireplace that reflects

BRIGHT, SMART & SUSTAINABLE WHY HALOPOST IS CHANGING OUTDOOR LIGHTING FOR GOOD As sustainability, energy resilience, and long-term value continue to shape lighting specification in 2026, solar bollards have rapidly become the preferred choice for both commercial and residential projects. The Pro Solar Halopost 0.8m Solar Post Light exemplifies this shift, pairing architectural appeal with robust engineering and cost-free operation. Purpose-built as a commercial-grade bollard, the Halopost offers several advantages beyond its clean, contemporary and aesthetic look. Its die-cast aluminium body provides exceptional durability, while the tempered glass diffuser ensures an even, refined light distribution ideal for pathways, driveways, landscaped schemes and public realm spaces. The unit’s high-output Epistar LED produces around 420 lumens; bright enough for safety and visibility, yet softened to prevent glare, creating a welcoming and practical night-time environment. In addition, the LEDs function as a perfect downlight that creates 0% upwards light, thus keeping light pollution to a minimum. Paired with a low colour temperature of 2500K, this makes it the perfect solar bollard for a bat-friendly installation. A higher colour temperature of 6000K is also available.

The move towards solar solutions in 2026 is underpinned by more than environmental targets.

Halopost is designed for reliable performance in year-round British conditions. At dusk, it activates automatically, beginning at full brightness before gradually dimming to conserve energy while still delivering safe, comfortable illumination throughout the night. This intelligent lighting controller extends battery longevity and ensures dependable operation even during periods of reduced daylight. The fitting’s fully self-contained design is one of its strongest benefits. With no requirement for trenching, cabling or electrical connection, installation is quick, clean and cost-effective, ideal for retrofit projects, remote sites or landscaped areas where wiring would be disruptive or impractical. Combined with minimal maintenance demands, the long-term ownership cost is significantly lower than traditional wired lighting. The move towards solar solutions in 2026 is underpinned by more than environmental targets. Rising electricity prices and increasing pressure on organisations to reduce their carbon footprint make solar lighting a financially and strategically intelligent choice. Solar bollards like the Halopost deliver zero running costs, low upkeep and complete independence from the grid, maintaining

BEHIND THE BUILD THE NEW GARDEN ROOM COMPANY TRANSFORMING OUTDOOR SPACES INTO BESPOKE LIVING EXPERIENCES As the UK embraces stylish, adaptable outdoor spaces, The New Garden Room Company is leading the charge in high-quality, design-led garden buildings. Based in Oxfordshire, the team creates fully bespoke rooms that redefine the home — from sleek offices and creative studios to gyms, guest suites, and multi-purpose entertainment hubs. The company was founded to revolutionise what a garden room could be, tackling the frustrations often associated with home extensions, from planning hurdles to juggling multiple contractors. Its solution: a fully in-house team of designers, engineers, project managers, and skilled craftsmen, delivering every project with precision, consistency, and meticulous attention to detail. True customisation is at the heart of the business. Every project starts with a blank canvas - no templates, no limits. Clients choose size, layout, finishes, and features, from underfloor heating and air conditioning to bathrooms, kitchenettes, soundproofing, and integrated technology. The result is a space perfectly tailored to its purpose, designed for comfort and yearround use.

The company was founded to revolutionise what a garden room could be, tackling the frustrations often associated with home extensions, from planning hurdles to juggling multiple contractors.

The process is seamless: beginning with an at-home consultation, followed by clear proposals, detailed design packs, and a fully managed build. Each garden room is crafted on site by qualified carpenters, ensuring a truly bespoke finish rather than a massproduced structure assembled from a warehouse kit. This hands-on, build-from-the-ground-up approach allows for greater attention to detail, consistent quality, and a result tailored precisely to each space — all backed by a 20-year guarantee. Planning and compliance are handled with the same care. While many garden rooms fall within permitted development, planning consultants and buildingcontrol specialists are on hand to manage applications when required, removing uncertainty from the equation. Sustainability drives every project. Efficient insulation, energy-conscious glazing, and long-lasting materials such as composite cladding and EPDM roofing ensure durability, comfort, and reduced waste. All materials are locally sourced wherever possible to minimise travel time, all timber used is FSC certified, and electric vehicles are used wherever possible, helping to further reduce the environmental impact of each build.

Looking ahead, The New Garden Room Company continues to push the boundaries of outdoor living. Each project embodies a simple but powerful philosophy: a garden room is more than an extra structure — it’s a transformative space that elevates how homeowners live, work, and relax. ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

NO.8 CASTLE ROAD TOWERS REDEFINE VERTICAL LIVING IN HONG KONG ACPV ARCHITECTS ANTONIO CITTERIO PATRICIA VIEL ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel reveals the residential towers at No.8 Castle Road, Hong Kong. Located between the green slopes of Victoria Peak and the Central business district, the two towers emerge as a new architectural presence in the Mid-Levels area of Hong Kong. A joint venture project by Henderson Land Development Company Limited and New World Development Company Limited, the high-rises reinterpret the relationship between architecture and the urban terrain, balancing monumentality with a refined human scale. “The project explores the idea of architecture as both an anchor and a transition: a built organism that

ARCHETECH - PAGE 84

adapts to the hillside’s dramatic slope while creating a new dialogue with its surroundings,” says architect Antonio Citterio, co-founder and Chairman of ACPV ARCHITECTS. The two towers rise to approximately 198 meters in height and span a total floor area of approx. 62,500 square meters. Connected by a shared podium, the volumes are positioned like asymmetrical wings—distinct yet inseparable— embracing the terrain with a fluid geometry. “The orientation of the towers is the result of a precise design intention that enables them to relate dynamically to the urban context while enhancing views, natural ventilation and privacy,” adds architect Patricia Viel, co-founder of ACPV ARCHITECTS.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

The project explores the idea of architecture as both an anchor and a transition.

Composed of a refined grid of glass and bronze horizontal lines, the façade envelope accommodates sliding openings, corner windows, balconies and technical elements in a continuous architectural rhythm. The façade’s layered system integrates operable components tailored to Hong Kong’s extreme weather, ensuring comfort and flexibility at all heights—even during tropical typhoons. The podium, clad entirely in deeply textured natural stone, recalls the traditional retaining walls that have historically supported the city’s hillside development. Its massive yet finely articulated volume roots the towers to the ground while reimagining their urban base as a transitional space. At street level, the building engages directly with Castle Road and Seymour Road through multiple access points—five on Castle Road alone—including a grand, semi-

ARCHITECTS, in charge of the residential towers at No.8 Castle Road.

The interior spaces continue the narrative of material precision and spatial clarity. Residences are organized to maximize light, views and comfort, with carefully studied proportions and operable windows offering natural ventilation. A sequence of shared amenities— including pools, fitness spaces, a restaurant and a private theater—are integrated into the podium and can be reserved to ensure privacy and flexibility for residents.

THE LEGACY, located at No.8 Castle Road, Hong Kong, is a joint venture project by Henderson Land Development Company Limited and New World Development Company Limited. ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designed THE LEGACY’s architecture (as design architect), and was in charge of the interior design of selected areas.

Throughout the project, elements of feng shui blend with contemporary Italian design. Architectural details such as window mullions and façade textures are conceived as part of a broader cultural dialogue. In the penthouses, large rooftop terraces of more than 200 square meters celebrate open-air living with panoramic views over Victoria Harbour. A refined design language draws on patterns of interlocking circles and the symbolic repetition of the number 8—a sign of prosperity in the Chinese tradition—creating a subtle interplay between form, meaning and experience. “The two residential towers stand as a response to one of the most intense urban laboratories in the world. In a city where density and ambition are the norm, the project introduces a new architectural attitude: rooted in context, rich in detail and resolutely human in scale,” says architect Sara Busnelli, Partner of ACPV

ROOFING, CLADDING & FACADES

CLADDING STANDING SEAM INSTALLATION VS TRADITIONAL METHODS Standing seam cladding systems offer significant advantages over traditional rainscreen solutions like cassette and rivet fix systems, particularly in performance, aesthetics, and durability. A major benefit is their ability to accommodate thermal movement. Using fixed and sliding clips, panels expand and contract naturally, reducing stress and preventing buckling or cracking over time. By contrast, cassette systems rely on rigid fixings that restrict movement, often causing misalignment and wear. Rivet fix systems, while easy to install, lack flexibility and are prone to loosening or corrosion. Visually, standing seam cladding delivers a sleek, contemporary look with concealed fixings and uninterrupted lines - enhancing architectural appeal and weather resistance. Interlocking seams also prevent water ingress, making them ideal for exposed environments. Cassette systems, though clean in appearance, have pronounced joints that disrupt visual flow. Rivet fix systems expose fasteners, creating an industrial aesthetic that may not suit modern designs. Fire safety is another area where standing seam systems excel. Their minimal cavity space and concealed fixings reduce airflow behind panels, limiting the chimney effect that accelerates fire spread. Cassette systems, however, can create airflow pathways, as highlighted in the Grenfell Tower fire analysis.

Valcan simplifies this by offering a fully integrated solution, including: • VitraDual® A1Aluminium Panels: PVDF coil coated 5754-grade aluminium panel is classified A1* rated in accordance with BS EN 13501-1 for any colour/finish • VitraFix® or VitraFix® Magnelis Steel Subframe System: Supports panels while maintaining structural integrity. • ProcellaPro® Sheathing Board: Adds rigidity and improves fire performance. • Fire Barriers: Critical for compliance and reducing vertical fire spread. • Breather Membrane, Fixings & Accessories: Fixed and sliding clips for controlled expansion. This approach eliminates sourcing from multiple suppliers, reducing compatibility issues and streamlining installation. It also ensures compliance with BS 8414 fire testing standards and other regulations, giving specifiers peace of mind. By offering a complete solution, Valcan ensure compatibility across all elements and deliver a system warranty of up to 30 years, giving you long-term peace of mind.

Why Choose Valcan’s Complete Standing Seam System?

In summary: Standing seam cladding combines durability, design flexibility, and enhanced safety - making it the superior choice for contemporary construction projects.

Architects and contractors often struggle to ensure all cladding components work seamlessly together.

ROYAL ARCADE CREWE MSCP HONOURING INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE WHILE MEETING SAFETY COMPLIANCE Crewe in Cheshire is a prominent railway hub in the UK and a town renowned for its proud industrial traditions. Historically, the town has housed major railway engineering facilities. At the factory on Pyms Lane, where Rolls-Royce passenger cars were once produced, exclusive Bentley models now roll off the production line, reaching admirers worldwide. The city council is engaging in several exciting development projects to infuse new dynamism into the town. This includes the Royal Arcade project, where both a new bus station and a multi-storey car park (MSCP) were completed in 2024. These are essential components of the transport infrastructure, and the car park boasts an unconventional design that embraces the past, present, and future. A tribute to the town’s industry Architects Corstorphine & Wright proposed a facade design for one side of the MSCP to pay homage to Crewe’s industrial heritage, and RMIG Solutions was chosen for the task. With RMIG ImagePerf, it was possible to showcase the industrial legacy that has delivered innovation and engineering excellence to the world for decades. RMIG Solutions has developed and perfected RMIG ImagePerf to allow photographs, graphics, art, and typography to be reproduced using precision metal perforation. This offers unprecedented creative freedom and endows the building with a character that harmonises with its function and surroundings.

Creative use of materials In the UK, all MSCPs must satisfy strict regulations and meet various standards for fire safety and ventilation. Perforated and expanded metal are excellent choices for this purpose as they ensure adequate ventilation and enhance user safety by allowing visibility through the facade, preventing an enclosed feeling. Furthermore, the chosen materials must integrate seamlessly with the environment, offer a high level of functionality, and require minimal maintenance. RMIG Solutions possesses the expertise to deliver solutions that adhere to both formal requirements and the visionary designs of architects and designers.

RMIG ImagePerf offers unprecedented creative freedom The Royal Arcade MSCP in Crewe exemplifies this approach. This is evident in both the facade featuring the illustrations and the other sides of the building, where a blend of perforated and expanded metal provides diversity in the newly developed urban area. RMIG Solutions also supports the construction process and tight deadlines by delivering numbered, finished cassettes for the facade, ready for installation. Technical characteristics Size of the project: 2,600 m2 Material Type: Aluminium Pattern: RMIG ImagePerf and RMIG Cambridge Hole Type: Round holes and expanded metal Thickness: 3.0 mm Finishing operation: Folding Surface treatment: Powder coating RAL 7047 and 8004 www.rmigsolutions.com

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

CURVE X CLOSING THE GAP: OFFICE BUILDING IN RED A vacant lot in the heart of Düsseldorf has been filled with a bright red building. In 2018, the developer from Hamburg organized a competition for the development of the plot, which stretches deep into the interior of the city block. The future office building needed to be sustainable and offer highquality interiors. JSWD submitted a concept for an x-shaped building with a bright red facade and was chosen to carry out the project. Today, the new office building is confidently situated within the existing structures around the perimeter of the block. Six stories, with a setback, the height of the street frontage remains in line with its neighbors on either side. The building sits flush with the buildings at its flanks before curving in at the center with an unexpected flourish. This flowing movement creates a protected forecourt within the building line, highlights

the position of the main entrance, and ultimately gives the building its name. The large display windows on the ground floor of the Curve Offices lend it an open, inviting character. With red steel panels and slender pilaster strips positioned in front of continuous window strips, the facade of the office floors above takes on a more austere appearance, which is given a pleasant dynamic by the compression of the lines created by the curves. From the edge of the block, the new building’s two arms stretch into the interior; the height of this portion matches that of the neighboring buildings. The remaining outdoor spaces, which were previously used as a parking lot, have been greened, resulting is a more pleasant atmosphere and an improved microclimate for all neighboring offices and apartments.

PAGE 97 - ARCHETECH

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS In addition to parking spaces in the courtyard, employees and visitors can park their cars and bikes in the two-story underground parking garage. With its x-shaped layout, the building is accessed from the center; the staircases, elevators, sanitary facilities, and ancillary rooms are all centrally positioned to allow for the entire spectrum of modern workspace concepts, while at the same time maximizing natural light. The building aims to achieve DGNB Gold certification, has already been pre-certified with WiredScore Gold, and meets the requirements for the KfW Efficiency House 40 standard thanks to features like its solar power system.
