ESPACE MONTMORENCY AN INTELLIGENT DENSIFICATION MODEL THAT REDEFINES THE NORTH SHORE’S DOWNTOWN CORE MONTONI, the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ, Montez Corporation, and Sid Lee Architecture proceeded with the ribbon cutting of Espace Montmorency’s latest cornerstone: a pedestrian tunnel directly connecting the complex to the Montreal metro system. The underground passage – which is the first of its kind in Laval – was made possible by a successful partnership between the owners, the City of Laval, and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) – thus concretizing the project’s Transit-Oriented Development approach, which has been the central focus in the creation of Espace Montmorency. Announced last June, Espace Montmorency is the first project in Quebec to have obtained a Gold tier LEED v4 AQ certification for its neighbourhood planning. It also obtained a Platinum and Gold LEED certification for the shell and the core of its different components. With more than 700 residential rental units, a 188-

room Courtyard Hotel by Marriott, and more than 500,000 square feet of commercial and office space, this major project redefines Laval residents’ urban experience around human connections and an energy loop that allows optimal flow and management of resources.
A unique opportunity Designed and executed by Sid Lee Architecture, Espace Montmorency comes to life on a vast, previously unoccupied 318,000-square-foot plot of land located east of the Laurentides highway, between boulevards du Souvenir and de la Concorde West. Its proximity to Place Bell, the Montmorency metro and train stations, and the Université de Montreal, UQAM and Collège Montmorency campuses represented a unique opportunity for MONTONI, the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ, and Montez Corporation to develop a multi-use project focused on public transportation.
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
By reversing the usual trends of urban development and thoughtfully utilizing the territory, this project maximizes its density thanks to a combination of integrated buildings. The objective was to design an authentic TransitOriented Development by integrating a wide variety of functions and maximizing access to public transit, all while easing circulation between the complex’s different spaces. This approach enriches the residents’ and visitors’ experience and offers a mode of development that is respectful of the environment. “For a project of this scale, the key to adopt a sustainable approach and minimize the impact on the land resided in the concentration of actions on a limited plot by strategically increasing the density,” explained Jean Pelland, Associate Architect, Sid Lee Architecture. By reversing the usual trends of urban development and thoughtfully utilizing the territory, this project maximizes its density thanks to a combination of integrated buildings. It welcomes a concentration of occupants that would normally have necessitated a space four to five times greater.

ecosystem, a series of innovative measures were implemented, like green roofs and a large urban garden, which help retain rainwater and promote urban biodiversity. Moreover, the project was conceptualized to facilitate mobility with its parking and access ramp specifically designed for bikes, located on the complex’s main facade, and its underground pedestrian passage, connecting to the public transit system.
A synergy of spaces
Although this innovative project may seem atypical in a suburban context, the result reflects the specialties of the site and demonstrates a genuine concern to adapt to Laval’s changing urban landscape.
An integrated model of sustainability Instead of creating siloed spaces informed by their respective function, Espace Montmorency was designed to build connections by linking a series of blocks of different shapes, sizes, and textures. This approach allows for the creation of a complex that is not only optimized for user experience, but also in terms of energy and water management. With the integration of an energy loop, the complex reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by 91% compared to a traditional building of the same size, all while decreasing its energy costs by 52%. “We designed this project by accentuating the combination of systems and services to promote a lifestyle where the environmental footprint of each user is reduced,” adds Manuel R. Cisneros, Director, Environmental and Regenerative Strategies, Sid Lee Architecture. “The objective is to create a maximal synergy, thus optimizing the use of natural resources within the ecosystem of the buildings themselves.” For Espace Montmorency to act as a durable
ARCHETECH - PAGE 8
More than just a key feature of the energy matrix, the idea of loop and connection is at the heart of Espace Montmorency, both physically and visually. Although predominantly composed of private spaces, the project was also designed for the majority of these areas to have a communal dimension, favoring the merging of resources and activities, all while encouraging the mingling of residents and visitors.
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
At the center of the complex, a vast 60,000-squarefoot courtyard of radiating shades of green offers a unique experience, inviting the community to gather and enjoy a peaceful moment in an urban environment. Additionally, the terrace on the roof creates areas for relaxing and socializing away from the busy streets below. Despite the sheer size of the complex, strategically laid out diagonal openings create an easy flow from one end of the structure to the other. Additionally, four large portals welcome visitors and facilitate fluid movements between the different sectors of the project. Individuals can freely circulate through the complex’s residential and commercial spaces as its loop reaches completion through its tunnelled access to the Montmorency metro station.

LHOV BY ELICA THE ONLY APPLIANCE YOU WILL NEED Revolutionary is a word often overused but in the case of Lhov by Elica, it may actually be an understatement. This elegantly integrated unit redefines the kitchen appliance category by combining four core appliances — induction hob, powerful extraction, a world-first extractor oven, and full steam oven — all in one beautifully streamlined design. At the heart of Lhov’s innovation is its ability to remove vapour not only from the hob but also from the oven itself—an industry first. When the oven door opens, a discrete extraction system above its full width draws out smoke and odours before they can escape into the room. Sleekly housed within the appliance, this feature preserves both the air quality and the clean lines of contemporary kitchen schemes. The oven itself is a master of versatility, offering traditional, steam and air-fry cooking modes, along with a smart food temperature probe for precise results. Whether using one of the 48 automatic programmes or customising your own settings, the intuitive full-touch interface makes it feel as natural as using a smartphone—ideal for clients who value both performance and ease. Designers will appreciate the oven’s wider-thanstandard proportions, providing a single-level cavity that delivers even results—perfect for large dishes and statement entertaining. Below the oven, space is left free for additional storage, reinforcing the product’s spatial efficiency. The induction hob is just as forward-thinking. Featuring five zones—more than any other extractor hob on the market—it’s made possible by moving the extraction vents to the sides and having 2 extractors with a combined air flow of 1100 m³/h. Each zone offers nine power levels and intelligent features that echo
professional kitchens: from precision melting and gentle simmering to warming and power shifts with a simple pan move. Beyond performance, Lhov is built with aesthetics in mind. Its flush, minimalist design integrates seamlessly into cabinetry, with no protruding corners or visible interruptions. Positioned ergonomically, the appliance maximises usability and spatial harmony, aligning beautifully with high-spec residential interiors. With an A+ energy rating, a five-year warranty, and multiple international design awards—including the prestigious Compasso d’Oro ADI Premio—Lhov is not only redefining appliances, but setting a new standard for kitchen design. ALUPROF SUPPORT ON GATEWAY 2 COMPLIANCE BY WOJCIECH BROŻYNA - MD ALUPROF UK Gateway 2 is a crucial regulatory checkpoint introduced under the Building Safety Act 2022, applying to higher-risk buildings, typically those over eighteen metres tall or with seven or more storeys and containing at least two residential units. Compliance is required before construction begins, meaning no work can legally start until the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) has reviewed and approved a detailed building control application. This application must demonstrate that the building’s design meets all relevant Building Regulations and properly considers fire safety and structural safety risks. The building control application submitted at the Gateway 2 stage is much more thorough than traditional applications. It requires developers to submit full design documentation, including plans, calculations, and specifications, along with a fire and emergency file and evidence that competent professionals are overseeing the project. Developers must also show how they will maintain the ‘Golden Thread’ which is a clear, up-to-date record of safety information applicable throughout the building’s life cycle. The application must also set out how any design changes during construction will be managed and reported to the regulator. The introduction of Gateway 2 is part of a wider push to improve building safety following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, ensuring safety is prioritised from the very start of construction. By requiring a ‘stop/ go’ decision point before work can begin, Gateway 2 aims to prevent unsafe designs from progressing into construction, increasing accountability and ensuring higher standards across the industry. This stricter process is designed to reduce safety risks during both construction and the eventual occupation of the building. Gateway 2 is part of a staged process, the three gateways in the new system are: Gateway 1 – Pre-Planning: Considering safety risks at the planning application stage. Gateway 2 – Pre-Construction: Ensuring the design is safe before building starts. (this is where Gateway 2 compliance applies).
ARCHETECH - PAGE 18
Gateway 3 – Post-Construction: A final check before the building is occupied. Aluprof UK has demonstrated a strong commitment to aligning with the Building Safety Act’s requirements, particularly concerning Gateway 2 approvals. Its broad range of high performance façade solutions, all 3rd party tested to the relevant standards makes Aluprof the ideal partner. In addition their major projects team collaborates closely with specialist façade contractors to ensure that all necessary supporting documentation and compliance measures are meticulously prepared for submission to the Building Safety Regulator (BSR). This proactive approach is essential, especially in light of recent challenges faced by the BSR, such as delays in processing Gateway 2 applications due to an outsourced delivery model and a shortage of in-house technical expertise. Aluprof’s vertical integration benefits specifiers by ensuring consistent product quality, streamlined supply chains, and enhanced technical support. With in-house system design, manufacturing, and testing, Aluprof delivers high-performance aluminium systems that meet stringent UK and EU building regulations, including Gateway 2 requirements under the Building Safety Act. This integrated approach allows for greater customisation, faster lead times, and improved cost efficiency, giving specifiers confidence in project timelines and compliance. Additionally, direct collaboration with Aluprof’s experts ensures tailored solutions that align with architectural intent while enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
Aluprof UK has been supporting specifiers in the UK and Ireland for over fifteen years with advanced systems that include highperformance windows, doors, and facade systems. UK-based facade specialists, Century Facades, in conjunction with the team at Aluprof UK, have recently confirmed that the Gateway 2 application for the Devonshire Place project in London is complete. The validation checks have recently been conducted and the application has been determined to be valid, however, the final decision will be made within the statutory timelines unless an extension of time is agreed. Marcin Bara, Design Director at Century Facades takes up the story: “In the context of UK construction industry, Gateway 2 focuses on ensuring compliance with the functional requirements of the Building Regulations and forms a “hold point” between the design and construction phases. It is crucial for a facade specialist contractor to work closely with the facade system supplier and vice versa to align on design intricacies, material specifications, and safety requirements. This collaboration must be based on trust and true partnership as only this ensures that the facade would not only meet aesthetic criteria but also adheres to performance and safety standards mandated by current Building Regulations via Gateway processes. “Effective communication and coordination between the contractor and supplier help in identifying potential issues early, optimising resource use, and ensuring the facade system contributes to the building’s overall compliance, sustainability, and safety objectives. This is where key partners such as Aluprof can work as an extension arm to our competent and fully qualified in-house Design and Engineering Teams to ensure the application produced for Gateway 2 is of the highest possible standards. “It is crucial for the system supplier to offer tailored approach to this new approval regime, so that their offer and service provided is project specific and matches our requirements as a specialist facade contractor fully. This is where our close partners such as Aluprof can play a key role in producing quality submissions, meeting expectations of our Clients entirely.”
rejected 25 applications, while the status of the remaining 847 applications was not specified. These delays have been attributed to several factors, including an unexpected surge in applications, a high number of incomplete or unclear submissions, and resource constraints within the BSR. Developers have expressed concerns that these bottlenecks are hindering essential housing projects, including student accommodations and build-to-rent homes. The BSR has acknowledged these challenges and is working to stabilise and improve the building control approval process for higher-risk buildings. They emphasise the importance of submitting clear and comprehensive applications to facilitate quicker decision-making and reduce delays. It seems there is still some confusion over the process with contractors and developers.
In short, Gateway 2 compliance is about proving to the Building Safety Regulator that the design of a higher-risk building meets all safety requirements before work starts on site. It is part of a much stricter regulatory process introduced after the Grenfell Tower disaster, aiming to raise standards and accountability across the construction sector. Aluprof UK has been supporting specifiers in the UK and Ireland for over fifteen years with advanced systems that include high-performance windows, doors, and facade systems. Many UK and Irelandbased fabricators and installers supply these systems and are on hand to offer surveys and cost analysis as to what improvements can be made with likely paybacks. Further information about systems and specification support is available through the company website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK head office in Altrincham by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005. www.aluprof.co.uk
Between October 1, 2023, and September 16, 2024, the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) reported that they had received 1,018 Gateway 2 applications. Of these, only 146 were approved, equating to an approval rate of approximately 14%. The BSR

HANDCRAFTED STONEWORK TO COMPLIMENT TRADITIONAL PROPERTY PROJECTS A COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION Photo: PAAR Construction
Prime building plots in the centre of heritage towns can be tricky to utilise. Property developers and builders have to finely balance budgets, planning applications and the needs of both potential buyers and local residents. Chilstone’s architectural stone can provide a cost effective solution with our versatile material that can replicate period features and age like carved stone. Family Homes to Suit the Neighbourhood. We have worked on a number of family homes where the builders have been conscious of the historic location. Together we balanced the need to maximise living space whilst complimenting the surrounding buildings with period features from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Our stonework was designed to tie these new builds into the area seamlessly with a high attention to detail. We handcrafted window headers, cills, door surrounds, keystones and parapet copings to help create these three storey, beautiful homes. Restoring Period Features In our seventy years in business we have supplied bespoke stonework for numerous restoration projects. We have worked with property developers to replace homes in London that were destroyed during the Blitz in the 1940s. The Victorian period features were recreated by hand to complete the row of terraced houses. Our expertise restored the stone detailing, featuring a fine floral and leaf pattern in the stone work, unique to the road. This beautiful pattern is repeated across the headers above the windows and along the lintels in the doorway and the decorative arches on each property in the street. We also made cast stone gate pier caps and coping stones to support elegant gates and railings synonymous with the Victorian era, the builder even added traditional black and white tiled pathways. With over seven decades in business we have extensive experience in restoring and replicating

NATIONAL ATHLETICS STADIUM HUNGARY NAPUR ARCHITECT KFT The National Athletics Stadium was established on behalf of the Hungarian State as the starting building for the long-term urban design of the Budapest South City Gate development. The stadium was designed by NAPUR Architect Kft., the winner of the design competition. The construction was carried out by the construction consortium ZÁÉV Zrt. – Magyar Építő Zrt. The main elements of the planning are the new Athletics Stadium and Park to be built on the site of the Vituki industrial site in Ferencváros, the planned new pedestrian-bicycle cable bridge connecting it to the summit of North Csepel, and the new Athletics Training Centre accessible through it. The three project elements together aim to help the development of the area with an urban design vision. The design of the building and its appearance were created in honor of the queen of sports, and athletics, therefore the architectural design of the stadium is an untouchable Antique classic white crown. In accordance with sustainability aspects, the project was implemented by eliminating the brownfield industrial areas of the southern Danube bank of Budapest and by rehabilitating its entire 20-hectare area. The goal was to create a new, open sports and recreational multipurpose athletics stadium and public park for sports enthusiasts and city dwellers who want to relax. In the center of the park, the building of the Athletics Stadium was built in competitive mode for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a capacity of 35,000 people. After the World Championships, the basic mode design of the
ARCHETECH - PAGE 22
Athletics Stadium building was completed in 2024. The temporary upper stands of the stadium were removed and replaced by a 15,000 square meter covered open and illuminated leisure park called the “Open City Ring”, on which a running track, family jogging track, streetworkout, training area and street food service were created. The goal was to create a stadium with a large capacity for World Championships, but in subsequent periods as open as possible for mass sports and athletics youth in a way accessible to everyone 365 days a year. The presented building is the first “Open Arena” in the world to achieve this. In September 2024, the first open program was held in the building, where the “Open City Ring” leisure park was presented as a new recreational place for Budapest.

In terms of reducing environmental impact, instead of car traffic, public transport solutions and pedestrian cycling are systematically preferred. The structural supporting structure of the stadium is a unique stretched roof structure made with optimized steel consumption, only functionally most important areas of the building’s interiors are heated in the order of 10% of the total floor area. In the entire development area surrounding the stadium, from the Rákóczi Bridge to the Kvassay lock and through the new cable bridge all the way to North Csepel a new flood defense, coastal pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths and boat stations were built. With the development, pedestrian, cycling and water connections of the northern and southern areas of the entire Pest quay were realized to the southern part of the city. The aim was to create an attractive recreational neighborhood for city dwellers that could become part of the ecological network of the EU and Hungary. NOSTALGIA MEETS MODERN DESIGN WITH TILE OF SPAIN
SANIFLO PARTNERS WITH RETROFIT 2025 AT THE BUILDING CENTRE
As the design world continues to embrace nostalgia, the 70s aesthetic has made a striking comeback in modern interiors. Perfectly capturing the vibrant and nostalgic essence of the this era, retro floral tiles remain a popular choice for designers looking to infuse their interiors with a groovy, quirky charm. Defined by playful colours and vivid patterns, these tiles provide a refreshing alternative to minimalist designs, adding visual interest and texture to any space.
Saniflo is proud to be a Principal Partner for Retrofit 2025 – What’s Stopping Us at the Building Centre in London. This six-month campaign includes a static exhibition and a diverse programme of in-person and online events exploring both the barriers and opportunities within the retrofit sector of the built environment.
Groovy Dec 8 tiles by Cevica (20cm x 20cm)
Rich terracottas, mustard yellows, deep browns, and avocado greens are key colours defining the retro aesthetic in interiors. These warm, grounding shades capture the relaxed yet bold essence of the 70s, making them ideal for adding vintage charm to both contemporary and traditional spaces. Pairing these nostalgic hues with neutral palettes can create a balanced yet visually stunning scheme, blending old school appeal with modern elegance. Unusual patterns were a defining feature of retro tiles, originally loved for adding visual interest to floors, walls, splashbacks and even outdoor spaces. Today, these bold designs are making a stylish comeback. With their abstract look and distinctive shapes, geometric patterns are particularly popular, perfect for those looking to make a statement and transform interiors into works of art. For further information visit www.tileofspain.com
The initiative showcases how existing tools and solutions can transform buildings, encouraging architects, developers, and local authorities to take action. Saniflo and sister brand Kinedo are contributing both products and case studies to the exhibition’s ‘house without walls’. Featured items include the Kinedo Kinemagic Design all-in-one shower cubicle—quick to install with no need for tiles or grout—and the Sanicompact WC, a space-saving, cisternless unit with an integrated macerator. Adjacent pods highlight real-world retrofits, such as an office block conversion in Peterborough using Kinedo showers, and a former bank turned dental training facility with Saniflo pumps and macerators. POWERFUL AND ROBUST SOLUTIONS QDOS Event Hire, a prominent player in the event sector renowned for providing top-tier temporary accommodations and facilities at prestigious UK events like the Chelsea Flower Show and Wimbledon, QDOS relies on Saniflo pumps and lifting stations for efficient waste discharge, ensuring a pleasant experience for attendees. The Sanibest Pro caters to single WC and accessible toilets, offering durability for heavy commercial use. For larger applications, such as toilet blocks, QDOS opts for Sanicubic lifting stations with multiple connection points, exemplified by installing 12 units at Glasgow’s Winterfest. QDOS, procuring Saniflo products from local merchant Richmond’s, emphasises the brand’s quality, robustness, and reliability, making it their preferred choice for years. Jonathan Reid, QDOS Regional Manager, says Saniflo offers a hassle-free solution, contributing to enhanced event facilities and customer satisfaction. Saniflo products are crucial for the company’s diverse projects, including installing a ‘Changing Places’ accessible toilet block. While some events allow connecting Saniflo products to on-site sewers, most
involve using storage tanks regularly emptied by specialist waste removal services. QDOS appreciates the simplicity of Saniflo installations, noting their staff’s expertise in handling these products. While alternative solutions like composting toilets are suitable for low-volume applications, QDOS primarily caters to large-scale events, making Saniflo’s powerful and robust solutions, like the Sanicubic, indispensable. The company’s longstanding partnership with Saniflo reflects a commitment to quality and reliability, ensuring that their facilities seamlessly meet the demands of high-profile events. WORKTOPS AND OSMO WOODEN WORKTOPS BRING A WARM, NATURAL LOOK TO ANY KITCHEN ENVIRONMENT. ALONG WITH GOOD LOOKS, THEY ALSO OFFER GREAT DURABILITY Advantages of wooden worktops • Natural beauty: Variation, unique grain patterns and warm tones add character to any kitchen. • Durability: With proper care, wooden worktops can last for many decades. This longevity reduces the need for frequent replacements. • Repairability: Water damage, dents and scratches can usually be sanded and re-oiled. • Sustainability: Unlike materials like stone or laminate, wood is a renewable resource. Trees can be grown and harvested repeatedly, making it a potentially sustainable material.
Popular woods used for worktops The type of wood used will influence the aesthetics of the worktop, this can range from lights yellow hues through to deeper brown tones. Here are 3 of the most popular species: • Oak: One of the most popular choices, that offers great durability, generally offering a warm golden tone. Its strength, durability, aesthetic appeal, versatility, and sustainability make it a popular material for worktops. • Walnut: Offers a luxurious and sophisticated look. Walnut boasts deep rich brown colours with a striking grain pattern that range from flowing lines to beautiful curls, creating a visually captivating surface. • Beech: Offers a naturally lighter and creamy colour when compared to other species. This brightness can help smaller spaces feel larger. Beech offers a straight grain providing a clean, consistent and modern look.
Care and maintenance with Osmo When it comes to protecting your worktop, Osmo recommends Top-Oil. The Top-Oil’s water-repellent properties protect against everyday spills and enhances durability. The microporous finish also prevents cracking, peeling, and flaking, extending the life of your worktop.
Osmo Top Oil comes in several finishes: • Clear: The most popular finish that will enhance and bring out the natural beauty and colour of the wood. Available in Satin and Matt sheen levels. • Natural: This product is designed to keep the wood light and in its “Raw” state. The added white pigment neutralises the wetted look that the clear finishes offer. • White: This is a transparent finish designed to apply a white tint to the surface creating a lightening effect. • Acacia, Terra, Graphite: Transparent tinted finishes that add colour to compliment surrounding units and décor. When it comes to everyday use, correct cleaning of TopOil is recommended. For routine cleaning, whether daily or weekly, we recommend using products such as Osmo Spray Cleaner. Osmo cleaning products effectively clean the surface without degrading the natural oils and waxes inherent in Osmo finishes. With proper care, Osmo Top-Oil can significantly protect and enhance the natural beauty of your wooden worktop, ensuring it remains in pristine condition for many years to come.

BEIJING’S 751 LIBRARY REVIVES INDUSTRIAL PAST DO UNION ARCHITECTURE Beijing 751 Library/ DO UNION. Do Union designed the 751 library that integrates with the industrial remains. The 751-798 Art District is the largest art district in China, and the main venue for Beijing Fashion Week and Design Week. Established in the 1950s with aid from East Germany, it originally housed a massive electronics component factory. The 751 Library is located at the end of 798 Road, the main road within the district, facing the Locomotive Plaza. The original site was a residual ash- washing pool from the factory, with a crane above for transporting coal ash. After 2010, the ash-washing pool and crane ceased operations, and the site was closed off, interrupting the continuous 300-meter-long active commercial interface of 798 Street leading to the Locomotive Plaza.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
The facade features continuous fair-faced concrete arches that contrast with the rough industrial remnants of the neighbourhood. The new library is part of the revitalization of the Locomotive Plaza. It aims to create a climax for the entire district by introducing new buildings, diverse business formats, and thoroughly open public spaces against the backdrop of old industrial relics. The library’s site boundary coincides with the original outline of the coal-washing pool, and it is fully open on all sides, creating a harmonious interplay with the surrounding industrial remnants, such as the coal conveyors, boilers, tracks, overhead cranes, and locomotives. The landscape integrates with the Locomotive Square, and extends to the “hinterland” in the north and south of the whole factory area, forming an active “cross” district. The scattered industrial structures on the site are seamlessly integrated with new elements, recreating the existing industrial texture while transforming the industrial layout into a vibrant urban living scene, organically inheriting industrial culture in a human-centered manner.

First-Ever Concealed Surface Mount Hinge
First-Ever concealed hinge for ultra thin door frames for flush-to-wall door design
From the moment it was launched more than 30 years ago, the Sugatsune HES range didn’t so much rewrite the rulebook on concealed hinges. It ripped out all the pages and started again. Concealed hinges may be hidden from sight. But over the past three decades, our HES hinges have become a visible hallmark of everything the Sugatsune brand stands for. Innovation. Minimalist design. Precision engineering. Understated ingenuity. From radically reimagining the very concept of a concealed hinge to establishing the world’s most comprehensive choice of products suitable for every use case - both cabinets and interior doors - HES has become one of our most iconic (and popular) ranges. So what makes an icon? To know the history of the HES series is to understand what makes it that little bit special.
The Butterfly Effect: 1989 The story starts back in 1989, when Sugatsune introduced the first ever concealed hinge for interior doors. It wasn’t just another hinge. It was a revolution in hinge design. Rather than borrowing from the pivot-arm mechanics common in concealed cabinet hinges, Sugatsune engineers created something radically different: a compact, symmetrical hinge that folded away in on itself, neatly hidden between door and frame. No bulky pivot arms. No compromise on load-bearing strength. Just seamless movement and flush alignment. Its signature silhouette - a stylishly symmetrical mechanical butterfly - became the face of Sugatsune’s hinge revolution.
Smart Adjustment: 1992 Concealed hinges may look effortless once installed, but anyone who’s ever hung a door knows the truth: alignment is everything.
So in 1992, Sugatsune added something game-changing to the HES formula: adjustability. The second-generation HES hinge became one of the first concealed models on the market that allowed both vertical and horizontal adjustment after installation. You no longer had to remove the door to tweak the fit. You didn’t have to compromise on symmetry. You just turned the screws, and the hinge did the rest. Smart? Very. Easy? Even better.
Adding a New Dimension: 2006 In 2006, along came the HES3D, still the flagship model in the range to this day. The name says it all. This iteration introduced depth as a third axis of adjustment. It also brought along a detachable frame plate, making installation a breeze. Hang the frame side first. Then click the door into place. No balancing acts. No awkward angles. Just a perfectly engineered fit, faster than ever. It’s no wonder the HES3D quickly became a flagship. From small cabinetry to hefty 125kg doors, it was the first truly universal concealed hinge system on the market.
The HES1-F, on the other hand, was purpose-built for ultra-thin door frame as slim as 8mm. This model isn’t quite fully hidden, but thanks to a recessed, flush-mounted design, it all but disappears from view. More importantly, it delivers a nearly invisible 5mm door gap. Which brings us to another accolade.
Award-Winning Safety and Style Several models in the HES3D line - the 70, 90, 120, H-120-36, and 120-A100 - have been recognised with Japan’s prestigious Kids Design Award. It’s an honour that highlights not only aesthetics and usability, but also child safety. These hinges all maintain door gaps under 13mm - tight enough to significantly reduce the risk of trapped fingers. The award is backed by Japan’s Better Living standards, overseen by the non-profit Kids Design Association. While it doesn’t certify absolute safety, it does recognise designs that promote safe, nurturing environments - especially in family and educational spaces.
Elegant, strong, and built for everything from wardrobes to architectural portals - it proved that minimalist design and maximum performance can, in fact, coexist.
More Than a Hinge
New Frontiers: 2022
From the first flush-fitting butterfly of 1989 to today’s 3D-adjustable, award-winning
Fast-forward to 2022, and the story takes another leap forward. That year, Sugatsune unveiled not one but two new members of the HES family: the HES2 and the HES1-F. The HES2 introduced surface mounting for the first time. With HES2 hinges, only the door has to be mortised. On the frame side, you simply screw on a plate. The result? Fast, efficient installation, especially for slim or even frameless door types. Same smooth concealed look, way less hassle.
It’s easy to think of hinges as mere details - mechanical necessities, not design statements. But for us, details matter.
models, the HES range has continued to push what concealed hinges can be. Stronger. Smarter. Subtler. They’re not just functional parts. They’re precision-engineered, quietly beautiful solutions that elevate the entire concept of a door. Where will they go next? That part’s still hidden. But if history is any guide, you won’t see it coming. And that’s exactly the point.

THE CRUCIAL COMPONENT FOR YOUR DOUBLE FIRE DOORS Allegion UK, a leading name in fire safety hardware and supplier of the Zero Z304 CE fire door coordinator, highlights the importance of fitting a fire door coordinator to double fire doors to enable them to close in the correct sequence to prevent gaps which could allow fire and smoke to spread. Fire doors are a key element of a building’s fire protection system, and their importance cannot be understated. Well maintained and properly installed fire doors help to keep people safe. By containing fire and toxic smoke within the area where the fire started, fire doors keep escape routes clear, help protect the rest of the building and allow people sufficient time to escape safely. But to be effective, fire doors must remain closed and be closed when the fire breaks out. Iain Banks, product specialist at Allegion UK, commented: “All fire doors must be fitted with a door closer to ensure they stay closed. However, double fire doors can run the dangerous risk of closing incorrectly and being rendered useless if not fitted with an appropriate fire door coordinator. A correctly fitted fire door coordinator will ensure your double fire doors always close in the correct sequence, remain closed and maintain an effective barricade against fire and smoke.”
Maintain an effective barrier. Fitted to the head of your pair of fire doors, a fire door coordinator makes sure the inactive leaf closes before the active leaf, guaranteeing your double fire doors remain an effective fire barrier. Safe & compliant buildings. Featuring a unique surface rebate catch, the Zero Z304 CE fire door coordinator will ensure the correct closing sequence of your double fire doors every time. Suitable for use on timber and steel fire doors, the Z304 is CE & UKCA marked to EN 1158:1997 and assessed to BS EN 1634-1:2014 for complete peace of mind. FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS Doors are just simple entrances or exits to a room, right? As any architect will know they are a key part of the design process. They provide access and flow to a space if used in the right way or be a hindrance if not. One way to maximise the space of a living area is with a sliding pocket door that fit snuggly into the stud work. There are other options available though that can create a ‘Wow’ factor. With any design you want to make a statement and it is the clean finish of ultra-flush doors allow you to really enhance the look of room even if you can’t see them. Rocket Door Frames introduced its ULTRA flush doors a couple of years ago and are proving to be extremely popular. Wall murals, paint effects or wallpaper can continue uninterrupted. Alternatively, you might want to make the door stand out in an eye-catching and interesting way. Visually that is obviously going to appeal to designers and architects but there is more to the ultra-flush door product than that. A key part of the ultra-flush appeal is the simplicity of installation. Rocket ULTRA’s kit comes with only four screws to assemble the frame and is designed for use with the readily available 44mm flush panel doors. Made of extruded aluminum the framework has ‘hooked’ edge profiles for plaster retention. Each single frame can be installed as push or pull, left or right opening thus offering structural as well as visual flexibility. All Rocket ULTRA systems are supplied pre-routed with a magnetic lock and strike plate which can be specified as a latch, bathroom thumb turn or cylinder lock. Completely invisible 3-way adjustable hinges for perfect shut lines are also part of the package. What’s more, the ULTRA Flush doors are fully tested and approved for 30 minutes fire protection FD30. They come supplied with their own intumescent kit that fits into the frame and not the door saving time and money.

A key part of the ultra-flush appeal is the simplicity of installation. Turnaround times are so important when planning a delivering for an eager client. Rocket Door Frames know this and is why we keep our full range of ultra-flush door systems in stock. This means they can be delivered to a UK location in 2-3 days, far quicker than other suppliers who may need to order them in. They can even enhance the flow of foot traffic within the space by eliminating visible obstacles like door frames. Interior design can be very personal but it is also about making a statement. Whether it is in the home or a commercial setting, it needs to be both stylish and practical. A Rocket ULTRA Flush door allows you to achieve exactly that. If you are an architect or an interior designer and you want to make the most of your design ideas consider including flush to wall doors as part of your scheme. FOSTERING A SENSE OF WELLBEING & INSPIRATION CAW ARCHITECTS’ NEWEST EDUCATIONAL DESIGNS SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS CAW Architects (CAW) has been at the forefront of reshaping California education through its awardwinning educational portfolio for decades. Committed to enhancing the educational lives of children and young adults, the firm’s wide-ranging educational portfolio, which spans elementary, secondary, and university campus work, reflects its belief that all students deserve equal access and inclusion. To date, the firm has designed the first two LEED Platinum K-12 public school buildings in the Bay Area, a Net-Zero Energy Master Plan for a comprehensive public high school in Oakland, and substantial campus revitalizations at Stanford University with an established goal of becoming carbon neutral and utilizing 100% renewable energy. It has been well documented that there is a clear link between increased student performance and the environmental quality of the built environment. “With every project at CAW, we strive to design educational spaces that foster a sense of well-being
ARCHETECH - PAGE 44
and inspiration for students,” says principal Brent McClure, who leads the firm’s design of educational environments. “We believe that well-designed educational environments are the foundation of student success.” “What sets our firm apart is that our projects in the public realm brings users joy,” adds principal Mousam Adcock, AIA. “Our clients appreciate both the design excellence and care we bring to the spaces we create.” That sentiment is echoed by principal Matt Dohrmann. “The magic of what we do is to imagine scenarios that weren’t discussed, and consider questions that weren’t asked or answered in order to bring new life and vitality to an environment, however big or small.” Recent examples of the firm’s educational portfolio, which emphasize sustainable learning environments and unique community spaces, include:

What sets our firm apart is that our projects in the public realm brings users joy.
Berkeley Community Theater Berkeley High School’s Building A houses the 3500seat Community Theater and 560-seat Florence Schwimley Theater, in addition to classroom and support spaces for the school’s premier Visual and Performing Arts programs. Completed in 1950, the building is listed as a contributor to two historic districts for its Art Deco style. However, the interior’s severely worn condition exhibited decades of use with few upgrades, while the cramped classroom spaces and oversized Community Theater no longer adequately served the students, faculty, or surrounding community. CAW Architects first undertook a planning study to develop a long-term renovation plan for the Theater Building in order to return it to a vibrant, safe, and accessible environment for performing arts and technical stagecraft students, and for the community. The first step in the study was a comprehensive assessment of the building conditions to identify necessary building systems upgrades, determine required seismic strengthening, and discern the shortcomings and potential of the academic and performance spaces in terms of functionality and accessibility. The team then worked closely with the client to develop design solutions that addressed not only the building’s basic deficiencies, but also the future needs of the thriving performing arts programs. Design challenges included creating new classrooms and rehearsal spaces for music, drama, dance, and technical stagecraft programs by magnifying the available space and designing for flexible use within the existing building envelope, improving the function of the two performance spaces to better serve the performers, technicians, and audience members, and enhancing the building’s presence on the high school campus by enlivening the building’s front door, while securing the campus from public entrance. With great enthusiasm, CAW Architects recently kicked off the next phase of development, focused on the renovation of the Florence Schwimley Theater and a reimagined student and public entrance to complete the modernization efforts of Building A. Monterey High School Science Innovation Center Strategically sited to leverage Monterey Bay’s stunning vistas, the new two-story, 12,500 SF campus addition integrates outdoor plazas at both the top and bottom of the steep site, offering outdoor learning spaces

throughout. Despite its modest size, the addition significantly impacts the gathering and circulation spaces, introducing ramps and an interior elevator to navigate the steep grades. Furthermore, the building is uniquely perched to create commanding views over the football fields and ocean, creating a striking presence. The first floor seamlessly opens to outdoor plazas on either side through large folding doors, transforming into an indoor-outdoor community space for school events, while functioning as a classroom on regular school days. Beyond the primary goal of adding four classrooms, the project contributes new outdoor and gathering spaces, enhanced security boundaries, accessible site circulation, a community gathering space, and even a skybox overlooking the stadium. Emphasizing durability, the exterior features fiber cement panels, concrete, and large windows. Windows are thoughtfully organized in clusters, providing diffuse natural light to the majority of the northoriented classrooms. The design received appreciation from MPUSD leadership, led by Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh, who supported the team’s innovative thinking. Notably, the project evolved from the initial idea of adding a building at the rear of the campus to a comprehensive solution addressing broader campus planning challenges. The proposal to demolish a small single classroom building further garnered support
ARCHETECH - PAGE 46
For Silver Creek High School, CAW added a new feature building on the street corner, and a new front entrance to the campus. This building enhances both the architectural experience and the student experience. The building is sited so that the streetfacing sides are more solid, with a playful pattern of windows and perforated sun shading to form the campus edge. The campus facing side features a forty-foot-wide sliding door that opens the building atrium to the new plaza for indoor-outdoor teaching and events. The central two-story atrium serves as a student hangout space with a mix of large open gathering areas and small balcony perches. The central feature stair makes a gracious connection between the floors, and is also the focal point of the atrium. All ten classrooms face the atrium and have large garage doors that open the classrooms to the atrium. The clearstory windows ringing the atrium bring natural light deep into the building, and also cut direct glare. In addition to the new classrooms, the
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
project added numerous indoor and outdoor casual spaces for students and improved the security at the edges of the campus. Corte Madera School CAW Architects’ new designs for the state-of-the-art Corte Madera School span two acres and feature two new buildings totaling 20,545 SF. Fully upgraded, energy-efficient systems throughout greatly reduce the district’s environmental footprint, putting the school on track for LEED silver certification. Per its mission, the school fosters flexible learning environments, encouraging students to experiment, collaborate, and thrive. New facilities include art, science, and classroom spaces, a dedicated “STEAM Center,” an outdoor deck/classroom overlooking the town’s “frog pond,” a student-designed playground with play structure, and an amphitheater with stage.
Ormondale Elementary School The new Ormondale Elementary campus promotes sustainability and dynamic learning. Spanning 8,891 SF, it features modern classrooms for art, music, science, and a “STEAM Lab” framed by a renovated courtyard that has been transformed into an interactive “sensory garden,” where the scents and colors of surrounding flowers and fruit trees activate the senses. Strategically sited buildings maximize natural light and views, creating a serene environment for K-3 students. Energy-efficient systems and solar design aim for LEED Silver certification, blending innovation with sustainability to foster a thriving learning space. www.cawarchitects.com Photos: Marco Zecchin
One of the key highlights is the new building on the 4th/5th grade side of campus that backs up to the open space known as the “frog pond”, which is maintained by the larger community. The building is divided into two parts with a “breezeway” and deck/balcony between them. A ramp leads down to a learning area at the level of the pond that provides a perfectly framed view from the lunch area. On the 6-8th grade side of campus, the new building was oriented to highlight a spectacular view of the peak of Windy Hill, the mountain for which the nearby open space preserve is named. Inside, the classrooms are organized around a central atrium, where students view the peak through the full height of a 26’ curtain wall window system.

With over 15 venues – including three new locations: The Charterhouse and Charterhouse Square, Studio Smithfield and the Church of Design at St Bartholomew the Great – and 160 local design showrooms, the 14th edition promises an immersive experience featuring installations, product launches, exhibitions, talks and workshops.
Made from bricks Leading this year’s festival is a major new public artwork by British artist Alex Chinneck, set in Charterhouse Square. This special commission marks Chinneck’s return to sculpting with brick and playing with architectural elevations. The piece incorporates repurposed steel salvaged from the demolition of another London building, thanks to the sponsorship of Cleveland Steel. It is developed with the support of Crittall Windows, FabSpeed and Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC. Meanwhile, Albion Stone and Hutton Stone return to Clerkenwell Green with a new pavilion designed by Hawkins\Brown and engineered by Webb Yates. Brick from a Stone: Arch Revival features a striking pair of nearly four-metre-high freestanding vaulted arches. One is constructed from sandstone bricks in various hues from Hutton Stone’s quarries, while the other is crafted from Heritage Portland Stone bricks from Albion Stone’s Dorset mine. Each arch is composed of a single layer of 102mm-thick stone bricks, demonstrating the material’s versatility as a load-bearing architectural product.

three striking drop chandeliers, reminiscent of the geometric Harlequin motif from the 16th-century Italian Commedia dell’arte theatre. J. Adams & Co will present its new Apex and Strata Circular lights at its St John Street showroom – designed by founder Will Earl and handcrafted in the company’s Birmingham factory. Devon-based Hand & Eye Studio also returns, bringing new collaborations with ceramicists Sue Pryke and Justin Page to the British Collection. Meanwhile, Buster + Punch (at Elements) and Bert Frank (Farringdon Road) enhance this year’s lineup with their latest designs.
Designed and made in the UK British design and craftsmanship continue to set the standard, with a selection of brands highlighting their excellence in design and manufacturing. Joining CDW at Platform, AH HA Project will unveil its first product range, inspired by the natural contours of geological formations. Spanning mirrors, side tables and desk accessories, each piece is crafted from Valchromat – a high-density wood fibre panel made from recycled pine wood and mill waste, coloured throughout with organic dyes and bonded with non-toxic resin. These pieces are machine-carved and hand-finished in the UK by the studio’s founders. Also new to the festival, family-run business Summit 1977 will launch its LUCA soft seating range at Clerkenwell Green. Made at the company’s Wiltshire HQ, LUCA combines bold curves and comfortable lines, offering a cohesive range with versatility and a unified aesthetic. Kirkby Design and COAT Paints have teamed up to
create a limited-edition paint collection, set to launch at CDW. The collaboration introduces 12 bespoke shades to COAT’s timeless colour library, thoughtfully crafted to complement Kirkby Design’s latest textile collection, HEIR, which draws inspiration from the elegant, old-world charm of grand British estates. The British Collection will see Morgan introduce its first collaboration with Liverpool-based SmithMatthias. Entirely foam-free, Bruton is an adaptable modular furniture system designed for evolving workplace environments.

Indoor or outdoor? As indoor and outdoor living seamlessly merge, CDW highlights adaptable designs that bridge the gap between both environments. Returning to Groupwork, Case will launch Campus, an outdoor chair by Matthew Hilton. Featuring a punched seat and backrest, Campus features a galvanised, powder-coated steel frame, ensuring durability against the elements, while its solid weight keeps it grounded even in windy conditions.
Global brands descend on Clerkenwell The 2025 festival maintains its global outlook, with Scandinavian brands leading the international showcase. Danish powerhouse HAY will present its latest collections by Erwan Bouroullec and Doshi Levien at MillerKnoll’s St John’s Square showroom. This is also the first time MillerKnoll is taking part in its new flagship space, which spans three floors and 1,700 square metres, representing Knoll, Herman Miller and Maharam. Blå Station will bring its recently Stockholm-launched pieces to the Inform showroom on Albemarle Way, while String Furniture makes its festival debut at Old Sessions House. Other European brands to look out for include Andreu World, presenting its Benjamin Hubert-designed Calma Lounge, and Roche Bobois highlighting its iconic pieces, including the Bubble sofa and Prismo desk, at Church of Design.

Key events: from sound to neurodiversity Making its festival debut, Acoufelt will host two insightful daily sessions at its Old Street showroom – one led by renowned acoustician Ben Claridge on effective acoustic strategies for modern spaces, and another discussing the latest innovations in soundscaping for commercial interiors. At Tarkett Atelier on St John Street, Tarkett’s Let’s Talk programme will foster conversations on sustainability, inclusivity and design. The extensive lineup includes creative workshops led by Yodomo, a research and innovation lab focused on textile reuse (21 May, 11:00 and 14:00), and a speed sketching workshop with Trevor Flynn, Director of Drawing At Work, demonstrating how sketching can be used to express ideas through simple techniques (22 May, 13:00). On Bastwick Street, Sixteen3 partners with Crown Paints to transform its showroom into an interactive space exploring neuroscience, accessibility and inclusivity in interior design. Visitors can engage with sensory experiences, from a visual impairment area to a colour perception challenge and sensory moodboarding. On 21 May (13:30), award-winning author and Chartered Clinical Psychologist Dr. Stephanie Fitzgerald will delve into the neuroscience behind our response to spaces, looking at how colour, texture, acoustics and layout impact wellbeing, productivity and perception.
CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK Engaging discussions and expert insights The festival’s official talks series, Conversations at Clerkenwell, returns with a stellar lineup of speakers, including Sabine Marcelis, Tom Dixon, PearsonLloyd and Note Design Studio. Hosted in a Kapitza-designed auditorium at The Charterhouse this year, the series features 18 sessions, including three daily talks presented by Dezeen. Other participants include The Barbican, Dulux, the British Institute of Interior Design and New London Architecture. DIALLING DOWN NOISE AT SEVEN DIALS MARKET Seven Dials Market in Covent Garden is a market and dining space occupying the 19th Century Thomas Neal’s Warehouse. Designed by architects Stiff+Trevillion for client Kerb, the scheme comprises 23,680 square metres of food, drink and entertainment space. Centred around a large open atrium under a large skylight, the two-floor market features a rich and diverse collection of 20 independent food and drink businesses offering cuisine from around the world. Part of the Stiff+Trevillion’s design was to draw on the building’s history as a former banana storage warehouse and the resultant space is contemporary in style yet rooted in its heritage. The design of the building retains many original features carefully restored and refurbished including cast iron beams and brickwork arches on a flagstone floor. As with all large, open spaces covered with hard surfaces, controlling acoustics was essential in providing a comfortable space for staff and visitors. As a result, Troldtekt wood wool acoustic panels in a black finish were specified for use around the central skylight to help acoustical performance. This is an excellent example of how acoustic panels can be incorporated into a project allowing architects
to design modern, large spaces with hard surfaces but mitigating the problems stemming from long reverberation time and reflected sound. Troldtekt acoustic panels are available in a variety of different structures and colours, combining superior sound absorption with an award-winning design. The Troldtekt range has a minimum expected life cycle of 50 years coupled with excellent resistance to humidity and tested to meet ball impact standards. The range is available in various sizes and structures, from extreme fine to fine. They can be supplied as natural wood or finished in almost any RAL or NCS colour. Depending on the panel specified, reaction to fire is classed in accordance with EN 13501 as B-s1,d0 or A2-s1,d0 respectively. Cradle to Cradle Certified® at Gold level, Troldtekt wood wool acoustic panels are manufactured using wood from certified forests (PEFC™ and FSC®C115450) and can contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, WELL or LEED points. Samples, case studies and technical guidance are available from www.troldtekt.co.uk or see our product listings on NBS (https://bit.ly/3vxoTfq) or Material Bank (www.materialbank.eu).

MADE BY GATHER OFFICE DESIGN ESPAZIO DESIGN Made by Gather, a designer and manufacturer of small appliances based in the heart of Manhattan, underwent a major project to centralize its Montreal operations in a new, larger, and more central space. This office move aimed to create more functional and inspiring spaces for work teams, all adapted to their unique needs. The interior design project consisted of the optimal layout of the offices, including a large kitchen with several islands to test their appliances. Of course, a showroom was necessary to present their products and meet customers and partners. Finally, photo studios are dedicated to showcasing the appliances and the prepared dishes.

True to its New York roots, the firm wanted a chic, industrial interior design that evoked the vibrant energy of Manhattan. Concerned about the well-being of their employees, Made by Gather also wanted to integrate Feng Shui principles to promote a smooth flow of energy and a harmonious climate. Proposed strategies Before starting their office design and fit-out project, Made by Gather approached Espazio Design for a pre-leasing study. The interior designers analyzed their needs and concluded that 8,000 square feet of space would be sufficient, rather than the 10,000 square feet initially envisioned. This optimization of the leasable area allows the client to save significantly on their lease, demonstrating the importance of a rigorous pre-leasing assessment.
PAGE 69 - ARCHETECH
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS With these detailed requirements in mind, a first draft of a layout plan for the top floor of 1801 McGill College was completed. The selection of this space also considered the roof access needed to install the commercial hoods required for the college’s test kitchen. The proposed office layout is an open-plan with unassigned workstations, adapted to the hybrid work mode of their employees. Various meeting rooms and concentration work rooms provide the flexibility needed to meet various tasks. This is in fact the basis of an office layout according to the principles of MTAA (workplaces adapted to activities). The showroom, which is also the reception area, has been designed with retractable cabinets on each side of a huge central television screen. The shelves and cabinetry furniture all around the room display a multitude of products. The large test kitchen, the central element, is composed of two preparation islands. In addition, a kitchen for employees is provided to gather and take a break during lunchtime, or to work on one of the space’s U-shaped benches. The integration of a Feng Shui design, in coordination with a specialist in the field, influenced choices such as the rounded shapes of the cabinet furniture, the light fixtures, and the metal arches in the open area, thus promoting a circulation of energy. Finally, the visual breakthroughs to the exterior maximize the diffusion of natural light and offer exceptional views of downtown Montreal. The spaces

were carefully arranged to reserve the best views for employees, while highlighting the New York aesthetic through colorful paintings by an iconic street artist. Impressive results The Montreal office redevelopment project for Made by Gather was a success for both the interior designers and the client, fully meeting the company’s functional and aesthetic needs. The new workspace, combining New York design, Montreal ambiance, and a touch of Feng Shui, is now an inspiring environment for Montreal employees and visiting New Yorkers. This stimulating office design represents Made by Gather’s vision well and reinforces their dynamic of innovation and collaboration. Client: Made by Gather is a registered trademark of Sensio Inc. CULT X BATCH LDN A DESIGN-DRIVEN COLLABORATION TRANSFORMING RETAIL HOSPITALITY Luxury retail is no longer just about selling products— it’s about curating experiences. In today’s hospitalitydriven fashion landscape, physical stores must go beyond transactions to become immersive spaces where customers truly connect with a brand’s ethos. This philosophy is at the heart of the collaboration between Cult Furniture and Batch LDN, the contemporary menswear label redefining the modern suit. By furnishing Batch LDN’s retail space, Cult Furniture has helped shape an environment that blends highend hospitality with cutting-edge design, offering customers a seamless and inviting space to engage with the brand on a deeper level.
Designing a Seamless Brand Experience At Batch LDN, the mission is clear: to take the stress out of dressing well by offering handcrafted, standout pieces that are both stylish and effortless. Furnishing the Future of Retail Hospitality To bring this vision to life, Cult Furniture carefully selected key pieces that elevate both ambience and functionality:

WONDERWOODS STEFANO BOERI ARCHITETTI WINS THE MIPIM AWARDS 2025 WITH THE VERTICAL FOREST OF THE “WONDERWOODS” PROJECT CREATED IN UTRECHT The “Wonderwoods Vertical Forest”, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and built by the developer G&S& in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, won the MIPIM Award 2025 in the Best Mixed-Use Project category in Cannes . For Studio Stefano Boeri Architetti, the award was collected at the ceremony in Cannes by architect Stefano Boeri and architect Francesca Cesa Bianchi, partner of Stefano Boeri Architetti, who declared: “Wonderwoods Vertical Forest hosts different functions - commercial areas, services, residences of various types and sizes, offices, ateliers, green areas and spaces for sports and cultural activities - both public and private, intended for a heterogeneous user base. Furthermore, on the seventh floor, a public

square and a pedestrian street connect the tower to the MVSA building. Among its green and treelined facades, our vertical forest in Utrecht hosts a real city. The recognition of the MIPIM Award as the best “Mixed Use” building in the world, has captured the profoundly urban character of Wonderwoods: a multipurpose and highly biodiverse architecture, open to the daily life of the citizens, plants and birds of Utrecht”. The MIPIM Award is the international prize that celebrates the most useful, sustainable and visionary projects in the sector that seek to improve the prospects of the built environment, in line with ESG objectives. The 2025 edition of the award, created in 1991 by MIPIM (the world’s largest event dedicated to

In the Best Mixed-Use Project category, they reached the finals together with Wonderwoods Vertical Forest, One Dojima Project in Tokyo in Japan, Praça Henrique Monteiro in São Paulo in Brazil and True Digital Park West in Bangkok in Thailand. Stefano Boeri Architetti is the only Italian practice among the winners of this edition.
Wonderwoods Vertical Forest Project Details The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is part of the larger Wonderwoods project, which also includes a second building designed by MVSA. The Two Towers connected by a bridge, form together a green oasis in the Beurskwartier area, the new pedestrian zone near the central station of Utrecht (city centre) in the Netherlands.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS and public spaces, while on the upper floors, there are offices, fitness areas, together with a complex system of duplex residences capable of combining residential spaces and ateliers. On the seventh floor, spaces for restaurants, both indoor and outdoor, enliven the connecting bridge between the two buildings, characterized by hanging gardens and a wide view of the city. With 360 trees and 50,000 plants of 30 different native species, equivalent to the vegetation of a hectare of forest, the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is a living architecture with facades that change in color composition and size of the foliage. The appearance of the facades varies according to the seasons, the incidence of sunlight and the growth of the plants. This is a real urban ecosystem, a haven for the biodiversity of living species and in particular of the birds that populate the Dutch skies and find shelter in the circular holes created specifically in the facades of Wonderwoods Vertical Forest to house their nests. The apartments of the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest are characterized by a strong presence of greenery on the terraces and balconies and enjoy a high level of natural lighting and an open view of the surrounding urban landscape; the maintenance of the greenery is managed through a centralized condominium station which, thanks to a system of sensors, makes it possible to control the irrigation system and schedule pruning interventions. The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest building houses approximately 200 apartments of various types designed for a heterogeneous user base, along with commercial activities, areas for sports and leisure and spaces for restaurants. In terms of functional mix, the basement hosts, on the ground floor, bicycle parking

site. The building is in fact marked by overlapping “orders”, which define a rotation of the building along the vertical axis: a movement that progressively detaches it from the alignment with the layout of Croeselaan street, allowing it to be arranged according to an east-west orientation. If on the north corner the tower constitutes the “bow” of a system of blocks that are arranged on the road axis, on the south side it is oriented to allow a connection at the seventh floor with the adjacent building, designed by MVSA. Among the sustainability elements of the Wonderwoods project, the area has been made entirely pedestrian and, under the buildings, a water storage system allows for the collection, recovery and disposal of rainwater. After the social housing project Trudo Vertical Forest in Eindhoven (realized by Stefano Boeri Architetti in 2021), Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is the first Bosco Verticale in the Netherlands that hosts public functions and is open to all citizens, with the aim of making this new architectural typology increasingly integrated with the urban fabric and accessible to all. www.stefanoboeriarchitetti.net

LIGHTING & ELECTRICAL
LUCECO PROVIDES FIRST CLASS LIGHTING AT EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT As part of East Midlands Airport’s £120m investment programme for its 60th anniversary, Luceco partnered with electrical contractor Fredk Lamb to upgrade lighting in the extended check-in hall. The aim was to deliver an energy-efficient, dimmable solution that kept the space welcoming even when not in full use. Due to the hall’s canopy-style roof, Luceco specified its Callisto LED luminaires with integrated Platform wireless controls and PIR sensors. This allowed the fittings to be grouped into zones—such as a commissioned corridor function near the entrance—where lights dim when the space isn’t in use. Using the existing cabling, the team achieved a pointto-point replacement with full dimming and control
Luceco’s Platform Wireless Lighting Controls offer a retrofit solution to modernise legacy systems. Features such as dimming, scene-setting, presence detection, and daylight control help cut energy use and operating costs while improving user experience. ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
ARBORESCENCE APARTMENTS A TREE-INSPIRED VISION FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LIVING Arborescence is part of our research approach to integrating greenery with well-being. The 35-metrehigh vertical garden is designed through an open call for the “IMAGINE ANGERS” competition. The building exemplifies how architecture can be reimagined to connect nature with the urban environment, and from the Maine River to the city centre. Thereby, serving as a distinctive landmark for the horticultural capital. Leveraging our France-Singapore culture, Arborescence distinguishes herself with the abundance of greenery present throughout all levels of the project. The orientation of the building ensures that each living space benefits from generous natural light, cross-ventilation, and unobstructed views for an environment that advocates for well-being. In the same vein, an intergenerational strategy guides the overarching programming narrative of the development. Different walks of life including preschoolers, working adults, and seniors converge at a shared central garden. Accessible to all during the day, the garden transforms into a vibrant exchange hub between generational groups to strengthen social links

and nurture empathy. Similarly, bioclimatic efforts are bolstered through green roofs and terraces for thermal insulation, strategies reducing environmental impacts and promoting biodiversity while addressing urban density challenges. In embodiment of an innovative and integrative approach, Arborescence presents a holistic sustainable solution that connects Nature, People and the urban environment. BIOPHILIC ARCHITECTURE - Biophilia, a concept that places nature at the heart of well-being, is the very essence of Arborescence. Its biophilic architecture integrates greenery and natural light at every level, creating a harmonious balance between people and their surroundings. Green outdoor spaces and breathtaking terrace views foster a stress-free and positive atmosphere. By reconnecting people with nature, Arborescence reimagines healthy living environment for modern well-being needs in an urban context. WELL-BEING - Well-being is central to the architectural ensemble of Arborescence, from its fluid geometry to its abundant greenery. At its green heart stands the towering ‘Tree of Life,’ which

in summer creates a naturally inviting environment and pleasant views. Expansive terraces and extended living spaces offer rejuvenation, while wooden soffits envelop residents in a protective cocoon. By blending wood and nature, Arborescence presents an alternative to urban concrete living, encouraging social interactions through shared common areas. BIOCLIMATISM - Arborescence integrates harmoniously into its site, taking advantage of prevailing winds and optimising sunlight. The South-facing façade, stretching from East to West, maximizes solar gain in winter, while balconies serve as sunshades in summer, protecting outdoor areas. Plants in the open ground enhance cool island effects, promoting bioclimatism. The multi-oriented housing units benefit from natural cross-ventilation, while the undulating terraces offer unobstructed sky views, ensuring comfort and well-being for residents. TECHNICALITY OF THE VERTICAL GARDEN, A RESPONSE TO DENSITY - With its green roofs and planted terraces, Arborescence advocates biodiversity and integrates into urban ecological corridors—an asset that benefits all. The project, consisting of 122 housing units, including senior living, a nursery, various amenities, and offices, spans 2,600 m² at

ground level, offering a total of 8,900 m². It balances density with abundant greenery and open space at all levels, providing a sustainable and harmonious alternative to urban sprawl. DIVERSITY AS A SOCIAL LINK - A unique intergenerational approach shapes the overall narrative. The central garden, where all circulation routes converge, connects the various programmesnursery, senior living, residential units, and offices - even welcoming the general public during the day. In the same spirit of community-building, the green spaces and common areas are designed to encourage interaction among diverse groups and foster vibrant, serendipitous encounters. INTERCONNECTION OF PROGRAMMES AND ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE Arborescence blends seamlessly into its exceptional site, with its three façades articulating a diversity of uses. The project balances technical requirements and regulations to provide dedicated access to each function while creating generous common spaces, such as the hall and central garden. The spaces are organised in interlocking layers: the ground floor houses offices, a nursery, and senior amenities; the podium is dedicated to senior living; and the upper levels accommodate residential units, an urban cottage, and a wellness centre. INTERGENERATIONAL SPACES - The programmatic diversity of Arborescence creates a vibrant, non-

linear sense of place. Common spaces become meeting points where seniors, children, adults, and students connect serendipitously. Similar to the multi-generational homes that were once prevalent, the development fosters organic opportunities for nurturing empathy. DIVERSITY OF HOUSING TYPES - Arborescence’s unique morphology, inspired by the shape of a tree, creates a myriad of spaces filled with air and light. The housing units radiate around a central ‘trunk,’ benefiting from multiple orientations, crafted views, and natural cross-ventilation. The two ‘arms’ to the East and West house senior units, with patios that seem to float among the century-old plane trees overlooking the Maine. This innovative design blends diversity, comfort, and harmony with the environment. • Architects: Crespy & Aumont Architectes, WY-TO architects - www.wy-to.com • Area: 8200 m² • Photographs:Juan Cardona, Svend Andersen • Manufacturers: AutoDesk, Schüco, Woodenha Industries • Lead Architects: Pauline Gaudry, Yann Follain www.wy-to.com

THE CLIMATE CHALLENGE HOW WEATHER AND THE CLIMATE ARE LIKELY TO IMPACT BUILDING PROTECTION The UK’s climate is changing, and with it comes an increasing risk to the integrity and longevity of buildings. According to the Met Office, 2023 was the UK’s second warmest year on record, with six of the last ten years ranking among the warmest since 1884. Rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions, such as intense rainfall and heatwaves, pose significant challenges to the built environment especially when construction is involved.
The Growing Impact of Climate Change Data from the Met Office highlights the urgency of adaptation. The number of hot days exceeding 28°C has more than doubled, and days surpassing 30°C have tripled since 1961-1990. Meanwhile, 2023 ranked as the UK’s seventh wettest year since 1836, with heavy rainfall events expected to increase due to climate change. These trends demand a proactive approach to building protection. This shift demands a greater focus on waterproofing solutions in building that ensure durability, airtightness, and moisture control.
Building Resilience with Advanced Membranes Future-proofing buildings requires materials that balance energy efficiency with weather protection. The illbruck ME007 FR Window & Door Membrane+ is designed to meet these challenges, offering superior watertightness, airtightness, and fire resistance. Stuart Sadler, Technical Services Director at Tremco CPG, explains: “To tackle climate challenges, the construction industry must adopt solutions that enhance resilience while supporting sustainability. Investing in advanced materials like illbruck ME007 FR Window & Door Membrane+ ensures projects meet
ARCHETECH - PAGE 92

With more extreme weather conditions, our building materials must withstand hotter, wetter, and colder climates. Illbruck’s new ME007 FR Window & Door Membrane+ delivers outstanding watertightness, superior airtightness, and breathability, preventing trapped moisture that can cause mould and mildew. It also offers excellent UV resistance and achieves Class B fire performance (EN 13501-1).”
A Smarter Choice for Modern Construction As climate change accelerates, the UK construction industry must embrace materials that enhance longterm resilience. illbruck ME007 FR Window & Door Membrane+ is a crucial solution, ensuring buildings remain protected against extreme weather while supporting energy efficiency and sustainability targets. www.illbruck.com

RIYADH’S NEW METRO TRANSFORMS URBAN MOBILITY ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS The world’s longest driverless transit system, the Riyadh Metro network spans over 176 kilometers across 6 lines and 85 stations. With a capacity of 3.6 million daily passengers, Riyadh Metro will reduce the number of car journeys throughout the city and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station serves as the key interchange on the network. The Riyadh Metro network, set to commence passenger operations on Sunday, December 1st, 2024 with the opening of its Blue, Yellow, and Purple lines (Lines 1, 4 and 6), will alleviate traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and improve the quality of life for Riyadh’s growing population. As the world’s longest driverless transit system, the transformative network spans over 176 kilometers across 6 lines and 85 stations, connecting key districts, business centers, and cultural landmarks in Saudi Arabia’s capital city. An automated rapid transport system planned by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), Riyadh Metro will meet the needs of residents and visitors alike. ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS
The KAFD Metro Station is composed of a set of elements that are highly correlated through repetition, symmetry, and scale. International Airport, and providing access to the sky bridge for the local KAFD monorail. The station’s six rail platforms over four levels connect with bus and park-and-ride services to create an important multimodal transport hub for the city, as well as new indoor and outdoor public plazas for the financial district. Contributing to the identity of Riyadh’s new metro system, the KAFD Metro Station’s design prioritizes connectivity. The station’s predicted rail, car, and pedestrian traffic has been modeled, mapped, and structured to optimize internal circulation and avoid congestion. The resulting configuration is a three-dimensional lattice defined by a sequence of opposing sinewaves (generated from the repetition and frequency variation of the station’s daily traffic flows), which act as the spine for the building’s circulation. These sinewaves extend to the station’s exterior clad in ultra-highperformance concrete panels. The façade’s geometric perforations reduce the solar gain as a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional environmental sheltering within the region’s vernacular architecture. The composition of the station’s façade echoes the patterns generated by desert winds in the sand, where multiple frequencies and reverberation generate the complex repetition of patterns evident in the natural world.
optimized by ZHA throughout its development to increase structural efficiencies and environmental performance while also simplifying the construction process without compromising spatial quality; seamlessly integrating the self-supporting structure of its external envelope with the station’s internal structure which supports the train platforms and viaducts. Providing optimal comfort at minimum energy demand, the station combines effective passive design features with a high-efficiency cooling system that is powered by renewables and automatically adjusts to differing passenger levels throughout the day, while sliding door panels on each platform retain cool air within the station. The KAFD Metro Station has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the US Green Building Council. • Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects • Photographs: Hufton + Crow (www.huftonandcrow.com) • Manufacturers: thyssenkrupp www.zaha-hadid.com

THE MODERN DANCE FLOOR THE IMPORTANCE OF SPECIFYING THE CORRECT FLOOR FOR DANCE AND DANCE EDUCATION Whether you are specifying a dance floor for the world’s leading dance companies or for classes in schools, colleges or universities, the same fundamental criteria apply. Wherever a student chooses to study dance, it is important to make sure that the learning environment is equipped to professional standards with sprung floors, mirrors, and barres. Choosing the correct dance floor is vital for dancers’ health, safety, and artistic performance. Sprung floors, often referred to as floating floors are not all the same and understanding the differences between the various types of floors available is important. Experts in biomechanics have established a clear link between the quality of a dance floor and the likelihood of injury, demonstrating that a floor with a consistent response and the correct degree of ‘traction’ is vital. Dance creates impact energy. If the energy generated is returned to the body it can result in an array of joint problems, sprains, fractures and knee problems. Lower limb problems such as tendinitis, ‘shin splints,’ and ankle strain can all be attributed to incorrectly specified sprung floors and can take several weeks of physical therapy and recovery time to correct. A dance floor that is impact absorbent and provides lateral foot support is essential.
