In accepting the LEAF Lifetime Achievement Award in London recently, Moshe Safdie urged the assembled architects, designers, and educators in the building profession to turn their attention to our global cities. “Humanizing mega scale is the single most urgent task that awaits us in the decades to come,” Safdie stated. He went on to say, “Neither the privacy of a house, nor the community of a village, are possible now without major new inventions which transcend individual buildings. They demand a new urban vision.” Citing the pressing issues that architects must tackle, Safdie urged the audience, “At a time where our cities are both thriving and ailing, proliferating to accommodate the majority of humankind, yet increasingly depriving us from the fundamental qualities of life, not only light, air and nature, but the deprivation of mobility; the erosion and privatization of the public realm; now is the time to declare, once again, that it is the cities we create that really matter.”

Archetech - Page 10

Safdie was recognized for his careerlong commitment to innovations in housing, urban design and humanistic architecture. Earlier this year, Moshe Safdie was named the 2015 Gold Medal recipient by the American Institute of Architects. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, honorary degrees, and civil honors, including the Companion of the Order of Canada, the Gold Medal of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, la Medaille du Merite from the Order of Architects of Quebec, Canada, and Israel’s Rechter Prize. A special thanks to all of our sponsors who helped put this fantastic event and evening celebration together and to our esteemed judging panel. SketchUp 2016 has arrived! Archetech - Page 14

SketchUp 2016 has just launched and in this release, SketchUp is more connected than ever to the people, applications, and information that interact with a model. Most notably, every SketchUp user now has access to Trimble Connect, a web-based platform for storing, sharing, referencing, reviewing, and collaborating on building projects. The ins and outs of SketchUp are as a result of the attention we pay to detail; the odds and ends around inferencing and drawing, the fluidity of 3D navigation, the hand-off between tools and utilities and even Copy/Paste is a big deal to us. We care about these details intensely and we’re proud to say that SketchUp 2016 just works the way it should. With updates including enhanced inferencing and tool improvements, customisable utility trays on Windows, refreshed textures and LayOut Layers. Elmtec is the distribution partner for SketchUp in the UK. Contact us for more information on 01844 263750 or visit www.elmtec.co.uk/sketchup.

When Beautiful Buildings meet Today’s Technology In today’s modern home, technology is one of the key lifestyle considerations. However, problems can arise when the continuous drive for bigger, louder and brighter audiovisual experiences come in to conflict with interior design considerations. Potential clashes can be avoided by planning and partnering. The design of home technology should be planned and begin as early as possible. If you want any sort of system then it must never be an afterthought. Whilst this may appear intimidating or frivolous to a client - as they may not know what they want nor care too much at that point; the mantra is always infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure. A knowledgeable audio-visual integrator can work with architect, designer and client to ensure that multiple options are available by installing intelligent cabling to cover a host of eventualities. If this is done correctly then it not only helps to make the AV integration a simple and flexible process towards the end of the build, but also allows upgrades and changes to be made in the future.

Archetech - Page 16

Treating the interior design and technology as two sides of the same coin makes both jobs infinitely easier. By its very nature, audio-visual technology demands to be seen – however if it is designed as part of the interior design as opposed to an addition to it, then the end result can be so much more pleasing. Taking this approach is what allows big TV’s to be hidden from view, appearing from cabinets, walls or ceilings when required, it allows speakers to be designed to be unobtrusive or even invisible, and it allows automated features such as lighting, blinds and curtains to function with or without user input. Done correctly, technology integration can actually improve the experience of an interior space rather than detract from it. When architects, designers and AV integrators work together it is amazing what magic can be achieved. MARKET DEMAND IS STRONG FOR CELSIUS SOLID ROOF Synseal has experienced a very positive market response to the launch of the company’s new Celsius Solid Roof, with requests for project quotations surpassing expectations. The key sales arena is undoubtedly retrofit replacement of existing 1st generation conservatory roofs, which is certainly a growing market segment. The sizeable quantity of installed conservatories across the length and breadth of the UK presents a prime opportunity for upgrading with either high performance insulated roof glass or a modern tiled solid roof. An Energy Follow-Up Survey 2011 report 6: Conservatories, prepared

by the BRE in December 2013 on behalf of the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), identified that approximately 18% of the 21.9 million households in England have a conservatory which equates to around 4 million conservatories. Only 77% of these conservatories have heating and a telling additional statistic from Palmer Market Research is that back in 2004, when new conservatory sales were still at their peak at almost 200,000 installs a year, 75% of those projects featured polycarbonate roof glazing. These factors combine to underpin a tangible market demand for upgrading with a thermally-efficient replacement roof solution.

Guardian Clarity™ anti-reflective glass for eye-popping details Traditionally, glass is used to create a barrier to protect its encased environment. However, selecting the wrong glass can affect the overall performance by introducing unwanted glare and reflection, while at the same time reducing light transmission and overall aesthetics. It is here that Guardian Clarity can make a difference.

Glass is the material of choice for many applications. Glass has a unique set of performance characteristics: optically pure and aesthetically pleasing, glass is strong, hard-wearing and long-lasting. Architects and designers around the world utilise this incredibly flexible and versatile material to help increase visibility or create highlights and features in façades. However, while the glass itself may be clear, the view is often less than perfect, as it is often obstructed by glare and reflection. Standard clear float glass will reflect light on both the front and back viewing surfaces by around 8% in total (around 4% from each surface). While these values are relatively low, they may interfere with our ability to see through the glass clearly. For some applications, this simply is not good enough. Good examples are shop windows which lose impact due to distracting reflections, viewing platforms which lose visual accuracy due to distracting glare, and restaurants with breath-taking views

that become completely hidden as soon as the sun goes down, to name but a few. There is clear glass and there is Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass Now there is a solution. Guardian, a key supplier to the building industry, has introduced Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass. Created by using the most advanced magnetron sputtering glass coating technology, Clarity is ideal for applications in which excessive glare and reflection create an obstruction.

help to meet local regulations in terms of energy performances through thermal insulation and/or solar control. This can be achieved by combining Guardian Clarity with Guardian SunGuard® products for solar control and Guardian ClimaGuard® products for thermal insulation. The use of Guardian UltraClear™ low-iron glass in combination with Clarity increases light transmission and neutralises the green colour of standard glass leaving a crystalclear appearance.

Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass helps to achieve higher light transmission and lower light reflection, delivering eyepopping optical properties for premium exhibit, display and façade experiences, in fact any applications in which a stunning view can be an advantage.

However you use it, Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass offers the best optical performance available today, maximising visibility with minimum light reflection and maximum light transmission. Whatever the application, Guardian Clarity can make a difference anywhere – helping to create buildings that stand out in the urban landscape.

And that is not all. Used in combination with other Guardian products, Clarity’s low reflection, higher light transmission can

WOOD & ARCHITECTURE

Archetech - Page 24

This year’s London edition has chosen wood as its theme. To honour this beautiful material, London’s SCIN GALLERY, Materials Library and Resource, presents a collection of wood curiosities called Growth Rings. The exhibition examines the species of trees that give us the wood we use in architecture, it looks at the DNA of wood and its physiology. The Amercian Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) partnered with designers Kolman Boye and furnituremakers Benchmark to create a towering structure of food plates in a commission for Wallpaper* Handmade 2015 called the Rotunda Serotina. The three-storey ‘general store’ will be presented in London for the first time as part of ARCHITECT@WORK and also plays to the wood theme for this edition.

The photography exhibition put together by World-Architects.com, features case studies of 50 new buildings from both globally recognized practices to new work from emerging young practices. This exhibition will be a visual feast for architects and designers alike. The pop-up RIBA bookshop for architects and designers, organized and run by RIBA, will give visitors an opportunity to browse and purchase magazines and books touching on a particular area of specialistion and interest.

TALKS PROGRAMME Wednesday, 27th January at 15:00 Victor Boye Julebäk and Erik Kolman Janouch (both Kolman Boye), Sean Sutcliffe (Benchmark furniture) and David Venables (AHEC) will present the Rotunda Serotina in London for the first time. They will discuss the Scandinavian wood tradition, the phenomenological qualities of the American cherry and maples as well as the ground breaking Life Cycle Assessment they used to create the Rotunda Serotina. This session will be followed at 16:30 by Patrick Richard (Stanton Williams) and Tom Dyckhoff, broadcaster and architectural

historian on the pros and cons of working on projects in a variety of different European countries. At 18:00 RIBA organizes a talk on the housing crisis in London with Anna Minton, author of Ground Control and Reader in Architecture at UEL, and Richard Blakeway, Deputy Mayor of Housing in London, Land and Property, Paul Karakusevic, Karakusevic Carson Architects, chaired by Eleanor Young, Executive Editor, RIBAJ. The discussion aims to explore the extent to which the industry can provide a solution to the housing shortage, or are the problems of the housing shortage more deep rooted? On Thursday, 28th January at 16:30, Christian Male (SimpsonHaugh) will present ‘Three buildings by the Thames. PHÄNOMENTA Science Centre The striking tower on the extension of the PHÄNOMENTA Science Centre in Lüdenscheid has the potential to become a famous landmark and a symbol of architectural and engineering excellence. Based on a feasibility study by schneider+schumacher, the interdisciplinary collaboration between KKW Architekten, WERNER Bauingenieure and formTL Ingenieure created an impressive steelwork truss tower that encompasses a helix shaped membrane stretched over its interior. By applying the tower-in-tower principle, this primary structure encloses a Foucault pendulum that is suspended independently of the secondary bearing structure. This defined separation allows the pendulum to move freely without being influenced by wind and vibrations from the primary structure, thus allowing visitors to the Science Centre to observe the Earth's rotation.

Archetech - Page 26

The tower is just one part of the extension to PHÄNOMENTA: a twostorey extension creates an additional 1,400 m2 of exhibition space and zones characterised by expressive forms. This is a direct is a result of the requirements of the tower's geometry but it also ensures the functionality of the exhibition space. The monolithic design of the concrete building also serves as the foundation for the distinctive steel structure. The framework consists of diagonally supported struts throughout the concrete structure and the elegant light-weight steel truss tower structure is made up of triangular circular hollow

tube sections that are welded airtight. The complex design, incorporated nodes where up to six pipes meet at various angles, required a comprehensive 3D CAD analysis. Membrane forces associated with pretensioning and wind are channelled directly into the junctions with a view to preventing excessive bending stress on the frames. In order to facilitate with hoisting and assembling

of the individual tower segments, special screw connections were arranged in the frames beside the junctions and covered with special semi-cylindrical metal sheets. This eliminated the need for welding work at heights and concealed the segmentation sections. The helix membrane inside the steelwork supporting structure appears delicate

and light – "a structure that is almost barely there," as described by formTL CEO Gerd Schmid – and yet it is still visually impressive. The helix consists of just three structural components: 990 m² of membrane, three structural cables and nine anchoring rods with clamps. These elements are sufficient to enable the membrane to adhere to the rotating and vertically tapered tower structure. While the calculated maximum form guarantees collision clearance from the outer tower tubes, the calculated minimum form prevents disturbances with the inner pendulum structure. The curved helix structure has a particularly striking effect at night, when the back-lit seams of the membrane and the shadows of the ropes converge upwards to form a cone shape, lending the tower an even loftier appearance. KKW Architekten developed the light planning for this impressive illumination feature in partnership with Winkels Behrens Pospich Ingenieure für Haustechnik GmbH (wbp). wbp was also responsible for the technical building fittings including the light management of the LEDs. The Foucault pendulum suspended from the secondary bearing structure not only helps visitors to “experience” the rotation of the Earth. The exhibition space below designed by designers from beier+wellach projekte is home to the stunning Phänorama: a 360º-projection of Lüdenscheid and the surrounding area that is controlled by the oscillation duration of the 30m-long pendulum similar to an oversized kaleidoscope.

Trotec Laser:

Providing Precision to your Prototype Trotec is internationally recognised as the leading manufacturer of computercontrolled laser machines for laser engraving, laser cutting and laser marking. Laser technology offers the highest level of precision when creating architectural models. With the ability to mark details as fine as 1 pt, a Trotec Laser aids in replicating even the most intricate of details. Filigree designs and the most detailed geometric shapes can be created to the nearest tenth of a millimetre due to the lasers ultra-fine beam, allowing you to work to the highest level of accuracy. Unlimited possibilities

Archetech - Page 28

A Trotec Laser can process with ease the wide range of materials used in the construction of architectural models including acrylic, laminates, wood, textiles, cardboard, foam, polystyrene, films and many more. The patented flexx series of Trotec lasers enables the user to also mark metal by incorporating both fiber and CO2 laser sources in one job without the need to physically interchange tubes. The user friendly software, JobControl, enables the user to identify which sections are suited to fiber or CO2 simply by colour coding, saving both time and money.

A multitude of benefits over traditional tools A Trotec laser offers a wide range of benefits over traditional cutting and engraving methods such as milling, plotting and sawing. As the laser evaporates the material, no swarf or shavings are produced, reducing disposal costs. The beam remains 'laser sharp' and can process a range of materials in varying thicknesses and shapes without the requirement for many different tool heads. Thus reducing production time and eradicates sharpening costs. A Trotec laser allows contactless material processing. No pressure is exerted on the material, reducing preparation time and the risk of damage, which is present when clamping material during milling. Laser cutting also produces crystal clear edges when handling acrylic, removing the requirement for manual flame polishing. Customers confirm that when cutting individual components using a Trotec laser, production times can be reduced by up to 80% compared to manual production methods. "The speed, quality of the finished product and efficiency are all far superior" explains customer Phoebe Nickols, Architectural Assistant at Liddicoat & Goldhill.

Arrange a demonstration at one of Trotec's seven regional showrooms throughout the UK and Ireland to experience the capabilities of a Trotec laser and find the system is as simple to operate as a printer. Visit www.troteclaser.co.uk or call 0191 580 1182. With over 40 Years experience Novellini is the European and a World leader in the production and manufacture of Shower enclosures and trays, Baths, Whirlpools, Steam Enclosures and Wetroom solutions. In the last decade Novellini has made significant investments into environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and continues to strive towards ever more sustainable holistic production and distribution methods for the future.

Over the years Novellini has continually developed shower trays, being one of the first companies to offer fully engineered large format shower trays in a number of sizes and colours as either low profile or more conventional raised with legs trays all from UK stock.

With the Olympic Plus shower tray - Novellini was one of the first manufacturers of large format shower trays to reintroduce the production of textured shower floor surfaces. For many years the Olympic shower tray by Novellini has been the only slip resistant (non- enamelled) product in the European bathroom market. Novellini realised the importance of a more engineered shower tray from an early stage and pioneered the use of innovative materials and fabrication methods in the Olympic Plus shower tray, which today is still one of the strongest and most stable large format shower trays. The stainless steel reinforced composite construction, now also used in the new Custom tray, means that (unlike many low profile resin stone products), Novellini trays arrive to site square, flat and ready to install. In recent years Novellini has developed the UK’s leading Wetroom and tanking product, with solutions to suit both timber and concrete installations. Remote flushing technology that can be positioned freely in the bathroom

MODULAR SHOWERING SOLUTIONS l

PREFABRICATED BATHROOM PODS

Given the chance, over half of UK householders would locate the flush away from the traditional area behind the toilet, according to latest research by Geberit. Responding to this demand, new Geberit remote flush buttons offer a flexible, practical and simple to fit solution to the siting of flush buttons for wall-hung installation.

l

PREFABRICATED SHOWER CUBICLES

l

The survey revealed that 30% of homeowners would prefer to site the flush to the left or right of the WC, rather than directly behind it, with many people even keen on the idea of siting it by the bathroom door, ready for flushing on their way out. The launch of the Geberit Type01 and Type10 flush buttons gives consumers just this level of freedom, as they can be positioned up to 1.7m away from the cistern. This means the flush button does not have to be placed directly in front of the cistern, something which 20 per cent of UK homeowners believe spoils the aesthetics of the bathroom.

The Noodle Rack / Lukstudio Noodle soup is a common street food all over China. While most of these noodle joints spend tremendous effort to win customers with taste, some has started to add attractive store design into their branding recipe. A good example is LongXiaoBao, a newcomer who sets foot in Changsha with an ambition to spread the local ShaoYang style rice noodle to the rest of China. Commissioned to conceive a contemporary identity for their first restaurant, Lukstudio integrates the tradition of noodle making in the spatial design by reinterpreting a noodle rack. Nestled along an outdoor shopping promenade nearby the Xiangjiang River, the 50-sqm noodle joint exudes a calm yet mysterious presence with its bamboo-cast

concrete storefront. Two rustic steel boxes penetrate through the solemn exterior: the taller one is cladded with rusted steel panels and its shorter neighbour is built like a metal scaffold. These three elements together orchestrate a journey of discovery.

selected porcelains. Finally, a series of metal wires are draped across the dining room to create the lighting feature with hanging bulbs. Balancing the rustic interiors, these reflective strands create a poetic notion of dining under a noodle rack.

Walking past the entry box, a customer is greeted by a composed counter design lined with the bamboo mold used for casting the exteriors. As one proceeds towards the halo surrounding the grid structure, the interior layers start revealing themselves. Firstly, the original wall is stripped down to its structural blocks to resonate with the rustic metal grid. Secondly, wooden boxes are carefully placed within the rack to showcase

Playing with the duality between rustic and refined, eastern tradition and western representation, Lukstudio introduces a crossover between fast food chain and upscale diner. The Noodle Rack differentiates itself from the stigma of kitsch fast food “hole in the wall” on every street of China. It demonstrates how Chinese eateries have the potentials to be reborn into hip gathering spots comparable to the new trend of cafés.

Van Gogh Museum's New Entrance Hans van Heeswijk Architects The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of the Netherlands’ most popular museums. The ever-growing stream of visitors required intelligent solutions for these buildings, which were designed by Rietveld (1973) and Kurokawa (1999). The design consists in broad outlines of a further elaboration of the elliptical wing of the building that Kurokawa had built in Amsterdam in 1999. Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates, the firm founded by the late Kisho Kurokawa and designer of the temporary exhibitions wing opened in 1999, prepared the draft design for the new entrance hall. Hans van Heeswijk Architects then elaborated on this to create a solution in which the existing wing and the new structure form a surprising new whole. “Work to move our main entrance to Museumplein has gone very well,” says museum director Axel Rüger. “It has been delivered within the tight eighteenmonth deadline, and on budget. The allglass entrance hall features high- quality structural engineering and systems.

There is a spacious, well-lit foyer with cloakrooms and a revamped museum shop. Improved access, better logistics and more space will allow us to give our visitors a much warmer welcome than before. Moreover, this arrangement better suits the upgraded Museumplein – all its cultural institutions now have their entrances facing the square. The transparent building with its state-of-theart glass structure enriches both the Van Gogh Museum and Museumplein.” State of the art glass constructions: glass as construction material The new entrance building is the largest glass structure in the Netherlands in which glass fins (beams and mullions) and double glass units are elements of the building ́s main structure. This is a major step forward in the technical innovation of transparent structures and for glass as a structural material. There has never been a longer structural glass fin in the Netherlands: 12 meters. For the overall stability of the roof, the glass fins have been connected to the steel structure.

They are working together as one structure. Glass façade, roof and staircase The bent glass façade is composed of cold bent double laminated insulated glass units. This means the rectangular glass panels have been shaped on-site during installation. The total area is approximately 650 sqm. The façade has 20 glass fins which are all unique. The longest façade fin is 9,4 meters. The glass roof with a total area of approximately 600 sqm has as main geometry a shell under an angle of 16,5 degrees. There are 30 glass roof fins, all unique in length and with an optimized height to accentuate the shape of the curved roof. The longest glass fin in the roof (also the longest structural glass fin in the Netherlands) has a length of 12 meters. The glass staircase is supported by a triple laminated glass arch which transfers the highest loads from the stairs and also stabilizes the staircase. Because of this glass arch, the amount of steel is kept to a minimum and the staircase can be seen as a transparent piece of furniture. LED lighting has been integrated inside the glass stair steps. “We ensured that the new entrance hall has become light and spacious with lots of glass. We want

to capture the sunny atmosphere, which you see reflected in many paintings of Van Gogh. We developed a unique support structure for the glass roof, which you hardly notice. As you enter, you will wonder: How is that entire glass building supported? And what you experience is light, space, and overview. Clarity is extremely important, maybe the most important; you have to realize that a museum is a public building where every day thousands of visitors, many foreigners also, often come for the first time. You need to provide clarity. The

visitors don’t want to miss anything; they need to understand immediately which way to go, how big the museum is and how long they will need to see it. When they feel at home and at ease they will stay longer and love to come back.” Architects: Hans van Heeswijk Architects www.heeswijk.nl Photographs: Ronald Tilleman, Luuk Kramer

Whether you are in the architecture, plant or construction industries, we have the experience to understand your business and what you are trying to achieve, and we have the expertise to enable you to do it better. It takes many activities and skills to bring the ideas and designs of Architects/Engineers to fulfilment. Building Information Modelling (BIM) attempts to standardise the creation and exchange of information to make the design,

construction and operational management of a facility or infrastructure asset more efficient. It is important to note that BIM is not just about buildings, but in its wildest context is being applied to facility, building, road, railway, and infrastructure projects. It is also now very much impacting organisations throughout the supply chain including manufacturers, fabricators and interior designers. The word ‘building’ in itself also doesn’t necessarily describe the full scope of a project – it doesn’t cover policies, assumptions, strategic decisions, supply chain, specification, user assessment, regulation and recycling sustainability. All are key parts of the projects ‘information model’ and should be included in the creation of the facility or asset information as the project progresses. BIM covers all aspects of the project lifecycle and is being driven by UK Government, to ensure that all public sector projects are under-pinned by the creation, collation and exchange or shared 3D models and intelligent

structured data that is attached to them. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016, which defines a series of domain models and the provision of a single electronic environment to store shared data and information. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016. Making the right choices to begin your BIM journey and maximise the return on your investment is critical. Aluminium The Trusted Building Material Offering Future Proof Capability.

Archetech - Page 46

Aluminium is the ubiquitous construction material, constantly evolving with design. It is a building material that offers the designer reassurance as well as catering for new demands. For construction professionals gaining a grasp of its capability is a future proof skill. Aluminium gives the architect the opportunity to design feature and style to a building every time it is specified. Naturally, each project is different and aluminium can complete the design concept of even the most innovative practice. Developments in 3D modelling and extrusion now mean that aluminium is the building material which literally pushes the envelope to the forefront of design. Aluminium is functional and offers sturdy assurance that it will withstand the rigours of the British weather, testing to CWCT standards to Sequence B takes the design safety test up to 3600Pa.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems offer Aluminium products that are robust and ideal for high traffic applications, such as retail, school or hospital. If one considers entrance doors, available in configurations such as swing, sliding, sliding/folding, the robust profiles ensure longevity even with endless open and closing cycles. In essence aluminium is the building material that, through its long use, has developed to provide function, form and solutions for even the most demanding projects. Systems Houses, such as Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, continually develop and refine their profile catalogues to meet the demands of cutting edge designers, providing support and calculation at any stage of the tender process. Now with improvements in glass and to keep up with Document L, systems can utilise thermal foam and increased

thermal break technology to take performance to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6. With the EAA’s (European Aluminium Association) “Future Generations” initiative, aluminium’s long reputation as a recyclable material is gaining further exposure. Future Generations, is a scheme which highlights that the use of aluminium is actually creating a bank of material that can be re-used and recycled in the future. Aluminium is a true “cradle-to-cradle” material with a real end of life value. In fact, due to the value of scrap aluminium, it has one of the most development recycling schemes in existence.

The Perfect Touch

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

It’s astonishing how far the world of home improvement has come in the last 10 years. The airtime that TV has attributed to home improvement which started with shows like Changing Rooms, highlights the thirst of the consumer for inspiration and quality. In today’s TV world, DIY SOS, 60 minute makeover and of course Grand Designs, now pushes what is possible to the very limits. Keen to further challenge the conceptions of the customer of what is possible, we at Designer Range have concentrated our efforts on the glazing aspects of home improvement. And to stunning effect. As suppliers and installers of well-respected brands such as Internorm, Solarlux and PanoramAH!, to name but a few, we have taken our clients properties to another level. Our approach at Designer Range is somewhat different and this is mainly due to the wealth of product options at our disposal. Many of our clients on many occasions have a predetermined idea of what they want, sometimes led by their architect or builder. However, when talking through the project with our Designer Range Consultants, we often find an alternative solution that in many ways, suits the application and the home in a much more considered way. As you can see from some of the accompanying images, our glazing presents the perfect façade that houses stunning interiors. We consider it a privilege to be involved in all of our projects regardless of the size of the installation. We have worked on complete new builds on houses that are immense in size and high in quality, to replacement installs for more modest homes who are looking for a modern wow factor. Our Designer Range team work with architects, selfbuilders and builders alike to help survey, design and install our amazing range of products. Operating from our base in Stoke on Trent, our fully accredited installation team are always on hand to help turn your ideas into reality.

Designer Range showcase their excellence in glazing.

IDS have made preparations to have interactive elements present throughout their stand in the form of a touch screen presentation and large display screen with a live Twitter Wall, IDS are sure that these interactive additions will create an enhanced user experience. Andy Russell, IDS’ Managing Director, commented on the preparations for the 2016 show, “The KBB 2016 exhibition is a crucial part of the next 2 years for IDS, planning for the stand and accompanying marketing began in January 2015. With our 2016 KBB stand we’re aiming to meet the needs of Bedroom retailers, house builders, buyers and specifiers within the Leisure industry alongside other diverse potential opportunities. And as always we’ll be using the show to reveal our latest cutting edge designs to all our valued clients. Reynaers’ unique aluminium window and door system CS 38 has benefited from an upgrade – and the new Slim Line 38 series offers better performance than ever before. SL 38 and SL 38-HI are now available and offer ultra slim profiles and improved market-leading energy efficiency. The highly thermally-insulated Slim Line 38 has the look and feel of steel with the performance of aluminium. It combines elegant design, stability and ease of production and is the perfect solution for both new-build constructions and the replacement of steel-framed windows and doors. It respects the original design but offers a vast improvement on thermal insulation. The minimalistic frame is reinforced by an invisible drainage system, avoiding the use of drainage caps on the exterior of windows and doors. SL 38 is available in three unique design variants – Classic, Cubic and Ferro – and its slim lines allow for an abundance of light. SL 38 features a highly insulated threechamber system with ultra-slim profiles for increased thermal characteristics. The solution is available in fixed, turn, and turn-tilt variations with Uw values as low as 1.4 W/m²K depending on the configuration. The system is suitable for both double and triple glazing with a glass thickness of up to 55mm without losing the ultra-slim look. For optimum end user comfort, the SL 38 product also offers excellent weather performance with air tightness of Class 4 (600Pa) and water tightness Class 9A (600Pa). A special modification to the design also means the system is available with hidden hinges.

A video featuring the new system is available at: www.reynaers.co.uk. Further details are available from: Reynaers Limited, Tel: 0121 421 1999, or email: reynaersltd@reynaers.com.

Reynaers launches sleek SL 38 Series: ultra-slim profiles with improved energy efficiency

Marketing Manager at Reynaers Rebecca Cope said: “The SL 38 is a really versatile product. It is perfectly suited for the retention of existing structures, allowing our customers to preserve a vintage look, or for renovation projects where steel frames have to be replaced. However, its high performance properties combined with a sleek new look make it a good choice for new builds too.”

RECYFIX® GREEN grass reinforcement modules installed at Banovallum School, Horncastle, Lincolnshire

The Hauraton RECYFIX® GREEN STANDARD surface reinforcement grid system was used extensively in the grassed pathways, where a high footfall was expected, and the grassed areas surrounding Banovallum School, Horncastle .The system helped to prevent erosion and improve surface drainage. Once installed, the RECYFIX® GREEN modules were discreet, yet provided a permanent surface reinforcement to the grassed areas with a loading capacity of 200 tonne/m². The pathways and area to be grassed were excavated, covered with a granular sub-base, a layer of sharp sand applied and then rolled. The RECYFIX® GREEN modules were then secured on top of the rolled surface and their apertures filled with top soil which was compacted then grass seeded. The grass was left to grow over several weeks before access was allowed. For more information go to www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Desirable Rainwater System for Desirable Residence Yeoman Rainguard’s XL Aluminium Rainwater System was chosen to add the finishing touch to an £11 million property in the desirable area of Virginia Water. Built by development company Watersmead Homes who pride themselves in building properties of quality and style that exceed expectations, the Georgian style home covers approximately 12,000 square feet over 4 floors.

Archetech - Page 60

Constructed out of Cotswold Stone, Watersmead ensured that the property combines practicality with style meeting the high standards and demands of the discerning purchaser. Meeting such standards required the use of high quality building materials and systems which included choosing the right rainwater system. “We obviously needed gutters and downpipes which not only matched the style of the house but were of a quality which would give the homeowner many years of maintenance free service whilst retaining its colour and style well into

the future. Yeoman Rainguard’s stylish XL Aluminium rainwater system fitted the bill.” Explained Mrs Gill Burns of Watersmead Homes. 150 x 100mm MOG XL Aluminium gutters were installed along with a 75 x 75mm square downpipe with the stylish look being completed with Cast Aluminium Plain Hoppers. Finished in a durable black textured powder coating which eliminates colour bleaching and ensures a life expectancy of the rainwater system to that of 25 years and more. “The rainwater systems look perfect on the finished property and we are very pleased with the quality of products and service that Yeoman Rainguard gave us.” Concluded Mrs Burns. www.rainguard.co.uk Tel: 0113 279 5854 Fax: 0113 231 0406 email: info@rainguard.co.uk

NEWFLOOR Company was founded in the 80’s by the owner Mr. Umberto Matterazzo after many years of professional experience in the raised floor business. Since its beginning, NEWFLOOR has been the partner of important national brands specializing in the manufacturing of hard stones, more precisely ceramic tiles. Strong in this experience, in 2003 NEWFLOOR started to sell its products on both domestic and foreign markets under its own Brand name.

This marketing strategy captured the attention of architects and interior designers looking for prestigious and customized products that were capable of satisfying customers’ technical and aesthetic needs: at that point NEWFLOOR’s production capacity went from 50,000 m2 to more than 300,000m2 per year. NEWFLOOR furthered its growth by developing new products, including a new, patented dry self-laying ceramic system called FREEFLOOR, which was a key step in expanding into the retail sector.

and mould making technology to reproduce identical copies of natural materials and with up to 30 prints available for each paver range. Once laid, the eye is unable to discern any replicated pattern allowing for a completely natural looking surface. Recently specified for external dining areas at London Zoo, LIDL HQ Northfleet and the new Portico Terrace at Theatre Royal Drury Lane - where Levato Mono sandstone effect paver ranges were considered so similar to natural sandstone material that is was sanctioned for use on a Grade I listed building by English Heritage. Used in conjunction with height adjustable fixed head or self- levelling pedestals or fixed height paver support pads, the Levato Mono system makes it possible to create perfectly level surfaces over uneven sub-surfaces. Ideal for installation over all waterproof membranes our support systems cover height ranges from 9mm to 550mm and incorporate a patented selflevelling slope correction facility with the convenience of height adjustment after the pavers are installed.

The Capers RT+Q Architects

The Capers is a mixed residential development comprising two 36-storey towers and two 5-storey blocks of residential apartments, rising from the piano nobile of a landscaped carparking podium. It is located amidst the suburban sprawl of Sentul, 5 km north of the Kuala Lumpur city-centre. It occupies 4.3 acres amongst various other land-parcels within the larger Sentul Masterplan. It is developed by YTL LAND under the leadership of Dato Yeoh Seok Kian -mastermind, risk-taker and visionary.

Archetech - Page 70

THE AESTHETIC IDEA The search for architectural form began from an interpretation of the site: its flat terrain and geography, and its rugged landscape of greenery and parks. The organic form of the towers drew inspiration from the soft billowing 'lalang grass' and weeds that grow wild in the area. The meandering and free form of The Capers complement, in a counterintuitive manner, the shapes and rigorous geometry of the other tower blocks of Sentul, developed previously by YTL. While The Capers is a 'relative' amongst other YTL residential developments in Sentul (like The Tamarind, The Saffron etc), its playful semantics and naughty aesthetics can also be enjoyed literally as a caper -- a prank -- amidst the austere urban conditions of

Sentul. Since the emergence of its form, it has garnered nicknames like 'the crooked building', 'the up-ended battleship', 'the kris', and 'the bengkok building' amongst taxi drivers, inquisitive passers-by and curious onlookers. THE PROGRAMMATIC AND URBAN DEMANDS The vision was to create a new designed urban environment to stimulate urban revival and to provide about 500 units of mid-cost housing in Sentul. Conceived as part of a larger masterplan of buildings, bridges, parks, gardens and railroad corridors, The Capers is the high-rise residential counterpoint (in form and in usage) to a series of adjacent low-rise office and commercial blocks.

The structural design is predominantly an interlocking series of reinforced concrete vertical shear walls and horizontal flat slabs. This rudimentary economy of its structure belies the challenges encountered, subsequently, on site. For instance, the jagged form of the towers prevent normal methods of hoisting, delivery and installation. Common construction methods were rethought and improvised. Materials like aluminium panelling and steel edge-detailing were deployed as a leitmotif to express a fresh aesthetic to the prevailing multicolour and plaster-andpaint Sentul experience. Details of metallic fins and edges were also incorporated to preserve proportions and geometry of the design. www.rtnq.com Photos Courtesy of RT+Q Architects

Page 71 - Archetech

The residential units consist of flats, maisonettes, penthouses, bridge units and townhouses designed around a forum of landscaping, greenery, water-features, swimming pools, pavilions and amenities like function rooms, gymnasiums, prayer rooms, childcare centres, playgrounds and laundromats; in essence, it is a vital microcosm of a larger and mature urban context. The towers are oriented with views towards Batu Caves (the region’s tourist attraction of limestone cave temples) to the north and the Petronas Twin Towers (until recently the world’s tallest buildings) to the south.

THE STRUCTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE The construction is borne out of a series of modest building methods, materials and structural design. For instance, the twists and turns of the building form is a result of simple laws of physics: as the floor-slabs are 'pushed out' every floor to sculpt the slanted profile of the tower, the building 'knows when to turn back' as gravity looms and common-sense prevails.

Innovative new heat pump matches new-build hot water requirements Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new 4kW Ecodan air source heat pump designed specifically to tackle the needs of new-build homes, with a system that matches the hot water requirements, whilst still meeting the lower heating demand of today’s well insulated properties.

Archetech - Page 74

New homes built today differ from previous ones because the requirement for hot water is likely to exceed the demand for heating for the first time. A reduction in fabric U-values and thermal bridging has reduced the energy requirements for heating and also allows for smaller plant.

www.ecodanerp.co.uk

“What is needed is a new way of delivering energy efficient heating and hot water”, explains Jordan Jeewood, Ecodan technical expert for the company. “We have engineered the Ecodan QUHZ monobloc system to meet this need by providing exceptionally high efficiency in the production of hot water, along with renewable space heating for the home”. The Ecodan QUHZ unit is MCS-Approved and straightforward to install, delivering water at 70ºC to a packaged 200 litre thermal store. From this thermal store, mains water is heated directly up to 65ºC via Mitsubishi Electric’s unique plate heat exchanger, meaning the homeowner receives hot water on demand.

“This model uses CO2 as a refrigerant to ensure a large delta T between the flow and return temperatures to and from the outdoor unit”, adds Jeewood. “This delivers the high levels of efficiency that enable the system to meet the high hot water, low heating requirements of today’s new-build properties”. The fundamental design, application and control of the Ecodan QUHZ is exactly the same as the rest of the range with advanced control logic within the thermal store allowing the system to deliver the high efficiency levels that the market has come to expect from the Ecodan brand.

Finaspan supplies finest quality veneer to a lawyers practice refurbishment

Archetech - Page 78

Recently Finaspan had contact with Tecnibo, a big fitting company in Belgium and Luxemburg: they were put in front of a challenge as they had to realize a project, containing about 3000 m² of veneered board under a tight deadline for a lawyer’s practice. Move in of the lawyer’s practice would be organized within the 4 months in a completely refurnished office. No delays would be accepted. Challenges were: • Find the veneer quality that would please the end-customer • Define the stain appropriate to the project: something contemporary but as well timeless, reflecting a peaceful harmony. • Organize boards & veneer sheets per groups as how they will be placed in the interior: veneer sheets used for the doors had to follow the veneered boards used for the furniture and cladding

Rapidly, it appeared that the best option, for the fitter and for the end-customer, would lie in Finaspan pre-finished products: the Aranya Oak Smoke boards. Besides its easiness to be used, the environmentally friendly aspect of the Aranya seduced the architect and enduser: core board & glue are formaldehyde free and lacquer has no solvent emission. Joiner would save time in the finishing of the boards: the veneered boards are stained and lacquered with a UV lacquer, allowing the joiner to put his focus on the realization of the project. Interior fitter was also delighted with the protective foil applied on the boards: he was able to cut, drill, plain and grove without worrying about scratches made on the surface of the boards. As the protection stayed until final delivery, there were no unpleasant surprises by delivery of the work.

Aranya is a range of Oak and Walnut veneered panels on MDF core for interior application. All patterns consist of selected A grade veneers which are then colour washed and lacquered with a five coat UV lacquer system to create a range of six Oak patterns and a single Walnut pattern. The panels are protected against damage during handling by the addition of a peel off protective film to the surfaces. And finally, the product ticks all environmental boxes in terms of materials and formaldehyde emissions; an important element for today’s society. Ideal for use in high end commercial, leisure and residential applications, the product is now available through our newly appointed sole distributor in the UK, Decor Solutions of Thurrock – T 01708 866177 info@decor-melamine.co.uk www.decor-melamine.co.uk

GREAT BRITISH BRANDS 2016 | ON ART & CULTURE

Sladmore Contemporary Curating beautifully honest interpretations of the natural world for 50 years

W

Archetech - Page 84

hile the Swinging Sixties might be better known for the developments in the music and fashion industries, it also impacted on the thriving art scene. It was in the midst of this cultural revolution that Sladmore Contemporary was established at 32 Bruton Place in 1965. Situated just off Berkeley Square, the gallery has been exhibiting contemporary and modern sculpture for over 50 years. Originally established as a gallery of ‘Animaliers’ sculpture, selling bronze sculpture by well-known sculptors of the 19th and 20th century, they now represent a much wider range of artists, including ceramists, multimedia assemblage artists, stone carvers and medallists. Though they represent a broader range of subjects, it continues to specialises in sculpture that draws inspiration from the natural world, from Nic Fiddian-Green’s monumental, aged bronze horse heads, popular landmarks the world over, to Mark Coreth’s highly textured animals in action. Their fixation is with the impact of 3D objects and the power of making. Their first floor gallery is a veritable cabinet of wonders, holding a continuous, varied display of work, while the ground floor hosts their regular one-man exhibitions. The stable includes more than 20 contemporary artists including Nick Bibby, Sophie Dickens, Roger Law, Rupert Merton, Kensuke Fujiyoshi and Rose Corcoran. However, for those who are looking for something with a longer

They are beautiful, exquisitely crafted collectables to be enjoyed, handled and contemplated by generations to come history, there is a smaller selection of ancient sculpture dating from 300 BC to 20th-century Modern masters, such as Elizabeth Frink, Marino Marini and Lynn Chadwick. In a nod to its founding focus, the sister gallery on Jermyn Street continues to show rare and important sculpture by 19th and 20th century masters, such as Rembrandt Bugatti, Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin. Both galleries have regularly shown at most major international art fairs, including TEFAF Maastricht, Masterpiece London and the Paris Biennale, a testament to the high calibre of art the gallery continues to curate. These days, it is far from fashionable to create art that is true to the subject and is honest and transparent in its aim; to simply portray an image or impression of the model and to create a beautiful object. But, whether you have an underlying affection for animals or simply find the natural world fascinating, the combination of an artistic interpretation of nature with elements

of beauty and a well-crafted aesthetic are a powerful antidote to the more frenzied elements of modern life. Their artists create works that are not egotistical confirmations of power and wealth, they are beautiful, exquisitely crafted collectables to be enjoyed, handled and contemplated by generations to come. All of their bronzes are produced in small limited editions. The artist creates the original model in clay or another malleable medium, which is then cast in bronze by a specialist foundry – normally using the lost wax (cire perdue) process – an enormously skilled and labour intensive technique first used over 5,000 years ago. While modern craftsmen founders have technological advantages, such as welding equipment, power tools and rubber moulds, the core process remains basically unchanged. Once the piece has been through the many complicated stages, it is then cast in bronze at temperatures of up to 700°C. The raw bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin, is then worked or ‘chased’ by the foundry before the bronze is heated and the coloured patina is applied. The finished bronze, normally signed and numbered by the artist, will have taken some two to three months to complete. It is the combination of half a century’s insight into the industry and the beautifully evocative forms that result from such highly intensive labour processes that ensure that any purchase made from Sladmore will be cherished for generations to come.

With a classic yet contemporary style Gillian can transform a room no matter what the budget.

Melanie’s designs can be commissioned for specific placement in atriums, offices or stylish homes. These interior wall works can be quite sculptural, with inspiration coming from her experiences when sailing, reflecting those deep waters. Aspects of that lifestyle, its strong contrasts, and other natural phenomena are interpreted using a beautiful, traditional metal – pewter. The metal is bright and reflective and the surface is animated by light reflecting off lively textures and sometimes chemically darkened or richly coloured by traditional gilding. The work is highly contemporary and has a visual language that can be understood in design terms by all cultures. In series or as individual pieces, these unique works present a fashionable ambiance for any environment.

Alpine Shelter Skuta OFIS arhitekti + AKT II + Harvard GSD Students • • • • • • • •

*In Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Alps. The mountain is the preeminent symbol of the Slovene Nation. It is the centerpiece of the Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park.

Architects: OFIS Architects, AKT II, Harvard GSD Students Location: Skuta, 4206 Zgornje Jezersko, Slovenia Architects in Charge: Rok Oman, OFIS architects; Spela Videcnik, OFIS architects Harvard GSD Student Design Team: Frederick Kim, Katie MacDonald, Erin Pellegrino OFIS Architects Project Team: Andrej Gregoric. Maria Della Mea, Vincenzo Roma, Andrea Capretti, Jade Manbodh, Sam Eadington Project Year: 2015 Photographs: Anze Cokl, Courtesy of OFIS Architects, Andrej Gregoric, Janez Martincic Client: PD Ljubljana Matica

The project developed from an architectural design studio at the Harvard Graduate School of Design led by Rok Oman and Spela Videcnik from OFIS. In fall 2014, studios of thirteen students were facing the challenges of designing an innovative yet practical shelter to meet the needs of the extreme alpine climate. Inspired by the vernacular architecture of Slovenia with its rich and diverse architectural heritage, the

students produced twelve proposals meeting various site conditions, material considerations, and programmatic concerns were produced and catalogued. The extreme climatic conditions in the mountains introduce a design challenge for architects, engineers and designers. Within a context of extreme risk to environmental forces, it is important

to design buildings that can withstand extreme weather, radical temperature shifts, and rugged terrain. Responding to environmental conditions is not only a protective measure, but also translates into a matter of immediate life safety. The harsh conditions of wind, snow, landslides, terrain, and weather require a response of specific architectural forms and conceptual designs.

120 years after the installation of Aljaz Tower in August of 1985 on Triglav*, this new shelter was placed below Mountain Skuta in Kamnik Alps. It is replacing a 50 year old bivouac that had previously been on the site. The bivouac is an object that represents a basic human necessity, a shelter. It is a symbol of refuge. The outer form and choice of materials were chosen to respond the extreme mountain conditions, and also provide views to the greater landscape. Its position within the wilderness requires respect for natural resources, therefore must meet the ground in a light and firm manner to ensure the shelter is strongly anchored while having a minimal impact on the ground. In addition, the outer shell needed to be realised with a highly resistant material and in collaboration with Rieder thin glass fibre öko skin concrete elements were able to meet all the requirements of aesthetics, material quality and the challenge of being able to withstand especially rigorous weather conditions. The design of the interior dictates modesty, totally subordinate to the function of the shelter providing accommodation for up to eight mountaineers. Informed by traditional alpine architecture, building elements, materials, structure and form, the design scheme by students Frederick Kim, Katie MacDonald and Erin Pellegrino was selected. After conclusion of the academic semester, OFIS architects and structural engineers AKT ll continued to and develop and adapt the form to the given site, responding to further input from the mountaineers, Anze Cokl, Milan Sorc and other engineers and lead the project throughout the realization planning phase. The design consists of three modules, in part to allow for transport and also to programmatically divide the space. The first is dedicated to the entrance, storage and a small space for the preparation of food. The second one provides space for both, sleeping and socializing while the third features a bunk sleeping area. Windows at both ends offer beautiful panoramic views of the valley and Skuta Mountain. Due to the nature of the installation process, the shelter was designed as a series of modules so that it could be brought to the mountain in parts. The entire prototype was constructed off-site in the workshop. The modules were planned as a series of robust frames, which would then be braced together onsite providing a manageable installation and a less invasive foundation. In order to keep the mountain site as undisturbed as possible, the modules are fastened onto strategically placed pin connections, which also act as the foundation on the site. The glass is a triple pane system that has been calculated to withstand to the projected strong wind and snow loads. Installation of the bivouac was carried out by PD Ljubljana Matica under the direction of Matevz Jerman, helicopter transport while the Slovenian Armed Forces and a team of Mountain Rescue Service - station Ljubljana. The whole transportation and installation process was carried out in one day.

Page 95 - Archetech

Although the scale of the bivouac is small, the project required a lot of effort and planning from over sixty participants who were mostly volunteers and sponsors. All would agree that, despite the small size, it was no less demanding than any large building project. However, all of the effort and planning for this small scale project is meant to keep the memory, spirit and culture of the mountains as a special place for Slovenians. The hope is that the bivouac will serve as a shelter for all of the climbers who need it, and that through their care and attention the bivouac will continue to do so for many years.

NL*A Reveals Plans for Open-Concept Green Office Building in France Nicolas Laisné Associés (NL*A Paris) has revealed the plans for its new Offices With Terraces, an office building in Nice, France, which aims to set new standards for bioclimatic work environments. The building’s layout revolves around the idea of flexible workspaces, integrating landscape into the building as an eco-conscious approach. The organization of the building has been reversed, with the circulation passages— typically at the center—moved to the façades to free up central space. Each of the façades is adapted to offer shelter from the sun, additionally acting as an interface between the outside and inside to provide indoor climate control.

Overall, the structure embodies a high level of environmental consciousness, as it will be certified BREEAM Very Good within the “EcoCités” label, and it “adheres to the environmental recommendations presented in the Reference Framework for the CRQE (environmental quality for development and construction) set out by the EPA," write the architects. The project is a part of the Nice Méridia technopole development, and will contain 6,400 square meters of office space and 600 square meters of shopping floor space. The building is expected to open by 2018. www.nlaparis.com

“This new office building concept draws inspiration from the Mediterranean climate and local lifestyles so as to set the tone for a new quality of life at work. The office becomes a meeting place, a forum with a collegial atmosphere; it lends itself to more collaborative ways of working.” - Christian Tordo President of the éco-Vallée EPA board

Lining Systems The importance of Fabrication By R D Mantle FIoR Managing Director of Ampteam Limited Sometimes a spark of clarity will result in a “eureka” or “light bulb” moment and an idea will evolve into a unique product. I don’t know how many people get such moments but it is certainly not uncommon as it is one of the things that makes us Human, our inventiveness! Such was the case many years ago when the idea for the Unifold® hinge was born, only I called it my “beer mat” moment, because at the time I was bending a beer mat and you can probably guess where I was when I was doing it! Since those early days of trials, tests, disappointments and triumphs, Unifold® has become a complete system and this has been achieved through an evolutionary process more by necessity than design, most often encountering a problem on site and returning to the factory and solving it in the workshop, employing fabrication techniques and whatever tests were necessary to prove the solution. Most of the fabricated components which are vital to the Unifold® system were designed in the early years of product development and we had many “light bulb” moments in that process along the way, such as the patented Clip Joint used for difficult and narrow applications. We learned the use of our hinge principle in so many ways to aid the fabrication process and to produce components which would be impossible any other way. From the outset this produced fabricated components fit for purpose and of exemplary quality.

We also realised early on that site working inside a gutter cavity could often be very difficult and to expect site operatives to “cut and carve” and then effectively seal a lining system was too much to ask, so our intention was and has been throughout for us to provide all fabrication, factory manufactured with simple gutter joints so the installation is constant and repetitive and as easy as we can make it. We became a “single product company” concentrating on providing product and service excellence. The system has proven to be entirely versatile with the ability to correctly line almost any existing system whether it is a level gutter or laid to falls. Some of our fabricated components are corners, tees, side boxes, sumps and expansion joints and these are just a few! In fact there are solutions for any circumstances however difficult or complex. For quite some time now we have insisted that anyone who installs Unifold must be trained to install the system. This is to ensure conformity and continuity of the system quality on site. This supports our 25 year comprehensive guarantee that includes the installation as well as quality of materials and manufacture. An industry first in gutter lining applications. It is also without doubt that Unifold® is a technical product which the following photographs clearly demonstrate.

Archetech - Page 102

This first photograph shows part of a fabrication that was probably one of our most complex and certainly one of our largest.

This is a two piece corner detail with an intruding pier section.

And this is the complete fabrication in situ, 18 pieces in total! And five gutters entering a single space! Not easy, and not a common occurrence, but if you are going to “set your stall” to line gutters then the ability to cope with such circumstances is elemental and vital. This photograph shows a sump unit with two coned outlets and demonstrating that each end is a gutter section for ease of installation. Can you imagine attempting the manufacture of this on site?

The message is clear, any lining system must be able to cope with whatever the site conditions dictate and if a 25 year guarantee is offered then this must warranty that the system is going to work, without leaking, for that period of time and beyond. Our quality and fabrication expertise means we are content with our promises. www.gutterliners.com

It takes a long time to create perfection.

Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

The unique design of the Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) bollard means it can be installed at an excavation depth of just 1.1 metres, only slightly greater than the height of the actual bollard itself with no loss of protection as it is still strong enough to stop a 7.2 tonne truck travelling at 64 kph (40mph) with zero penetration and continued working afterwards.

Contemporary Buildings with Timber

Archetech - Page 114

Enthusiasm for architecture and engineering in timber is growing rapidly among a new generation of architects and designers. The reasons for the success of timber in construction today lie with the technological advances of timber and construction research:

design; all of which have been proven to be unfounded. Today we are able to build virtually any kind of timber building (a 24 story timber building is going up in Vienna in autumn 2015) with the same fire resistance as traditional builds and with good sound insulation.

Stommel Haus has pioneered healthy and contemporary timber construction in Germany. Franz Stommel, founder of the company over 50 years ago, was already building houses with untreated timber in the late 60’s when chemical wood protection was still mandatory in Germany. The development of a sandwich wall with a solid timber frame at its center enables Stommel Haus to build contemporary architecture; the advance in production techniques and logistics allows Stommel Haus to pre-fabricate bespoke homes and to assemble them on site, to be wind- and watertight typically within one week.

• •

Timber is a sustainable renewable material with a very positive CO2 balance. Timber has excellent thermal and antibacterial properties Timber is diffusion open and provides the means to build homes with excellent interior climate without the need for mechanical ventilation. At the same time, well-constructed timber buildings achieve very high air-tightness values – a Stommel house for instance typically reaches ≤1 m³/ (h*m²) at 50 Pa. Major progress in timber research and the application of the results in industry standards (such as DIN 68800) enable durable construction without the need for the chemical treatment of the timber.

Contemporary timber construction competes with other materials in terms of cost and has additional significant benefits such as the beauty and health aspects of the material, the fact that timber buildings can be manufactured off-site and the connection with the craftsmanship that is applied to design and build timber houses. Some architects, builders, administrative bodies, financial institutions and insurers still have persistent reservations about building in timber mainly caused by the perceived greater risk of fire, sound insulation and limitations of

There are virtually no limits in design, from traditional to modern, Arts-and-Crafts Style to Bauhaus architecture – all of the homes have excellent energy efficiency, air-tightness, compliance with industry standards and Building Regulations and there are no problems obtaining mortgages or insurance. No matter what the design of the house, the Stommel Haus principles in construction, production and assembly are always the same which enables the company to provide high quality homes over and over again. If you are interested in using high tech timber construction for your project, visit us at www.stommel-haus.co.uk or write to info@stommel-haus.co.uk
