Dear readers, It is my great pleasure to bring you this annual newsletter, marking the 33rd anniversary of Archery Club, HKUSU. I have had an amazing time whilst putting this together, and more so when I realised at the end how much we have achieved this year. All the events that we held and all the planning beforehand have all been worth it. Though this year may not have been the most perfect, in fact, it is anything but, nevertheless the club and the committee have ploughed through. When flipping through the pages, I hope you see the efforts and love for the club that the 33rd cabinet has tried to convey through our words and edits. FORWARD
The session 2018-2019 of Archery Club, HKUSU is coming to an end soon. This year the Club has held a number of events such as the Superpasses, Training courses, Orientation day and the 28th HKU Archery Open Contest, to date. Hereby, I would like to thank our coach, Mr. Lam Siu Tong, for devoting his time and efforts to supporting our archers in regular practices and competitions, while giving his helping hands in events including training courses and Superpasses. I would also like to thank all members and graduates who have participated in our events as well as those who have assisted us in making them come to fruition. Lastly, I wish to congratulate all our archers on their outstanding results and sportsmanship. It is encouraging to see more and more new archers being increasingly nurturing towards their archery skills via training courses and frequent practices, eventually becoming university team members and representing us in the Annual Intervasity Games. I am looking forward to seeing archery become a more popular sport. The Club has been and will always be a place for our archers to meet and explore archery together. WORDS FROM THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS 入大學之前，從師兄師姐的口中聽聞過大學五件事。一年前，我說不清 孰難孰易；一年後，我可以說是上莊為難事無疑。 上莊不像拍拖，不可 “熱情淡了 要散就散”；上莊不像兼職，不可合則 來不合則去；上莊不像讀書，不是單獨向自己負責，而是向眾多的會員 負責；上莊不像住Hall，不是 “同居於這小角落 眼裡並沒有別人”，卻 總是朝夕相見、目標一致。

箭會是一個特別的莊，是少數既有能力籌辦訓練班及比賽，又會定期舉 行聯誼活動的屬會。一年的莊期遇上不少波折，一場颱風打亂了我們的 計劃，訓練班的延期、參加者的退出、迎新日的更改，曾讓我們措手不 及；一位莊友的毅然離去，去追逐他更遠大的理想，遺下的有我們半年 的回憶，還有半年待完成的莊務...... 一年前，我想我該能成為大家的核心，助大家的一臂之力；一年過後， 我想大抵我說不出這番話，前半年還是一年級的時候總能騰出時間 “睇 場”，後半年坦白說是大不如前，做不好一以貫之的 “包底”，還是希 望下莊能做到，可以在落莊的時刻喊一聲 “盡力了 問心無愧”；不想 當個獨裁的領袖，不願干預 PIC 做最終的決定，卻招致公開賽出現了亂 局。 不想在此吹噓自己有何 “政績”，也不必在此為自己作多少 “辯解”， 希望大家在這一年莊期有所長進，有所成長，就好了。
一直都覺得自己上左莊冇幾耐，原來一轉眼就完左一年既莊期。 本來只係中意射箭，唔知點解無啦啦會上莊做左iv哈哈。第一次 做一個活動既pic，對本身懶底既我真係一大挑戰。但搞搞下又覺 得好有成功感，由諗d game故事到同莊友一齊通宵嘔條d game 片出黎，chur到顛但係開心既，oday果日聽到有par ti話玩得開 心真係幾chur都值得。莊友又係特別既存在，莊務上有時真係好 想斬甩佢地個頭，但又不自覺會想同佢地玩同佢地顛。不過睇返 呢一年，上莊係無悔既。就算揀多一千次，都會做返一樣既決定 :) Stella, Internal Vice Chairperson

I have changed a lot since I have decided to become an Exco of Archery Club, HKUSU. I learned to be more considerate, organised and caring. Open Con is the main event of the club, and I had the priviledge to be the PIC of the event. When organising this event, I learned to manage my time better whilst keeping many procedures and stuff in mind. Spending time with my jongmates has always been a point of relaxation for me - you have a group of friends that you can chat with, ask for help and opinions. Even though I may have a lot of work to do as an External Vice Chairperson, I still very much enjoyed and enjoy being an Exco of Archery Club.

Looking back on this past year, I believe it has allowed me to develop both my soft and hard skills. With the proposal, I learnt so much more about what one can do with word processing. The regular tasks of mass emails also helped developed my time management. These skills are invaluable for the future workplace. In terms of soft skills, one unique part of collaboration within an Exco is that you have to work with the same people for an entire year, thus you have to learn to accept their flaws and also appreciate their strengths. Without the help of my fellow committee members, this would have been a very tough year and I’m grateful to have had walked down the same road with them.
Being the financial secretary, I learnt a lot throughout the year - practical skills dealing with banking issues, receipts and applying for fundings. These are hard to acquire in daily life. Throughout the year, I got familiar in dealing with them and I believe it will be important to me in the future as well. Despite the practical skills, I learnt a lot about cooperation with my fellows. By frequent and effective communication with them, we can achieve success in complicated events. It is essential to keep a good relationship with them, both as a friend and colleague. There are many things I learnt that I have not mentioned but all of them are what I would want to treasure and remember throughout my life.

Due to my post, I have gotten to know many people through training courses and in regular practices in RBTC. They are people from different Faculties and Departments. Some even became good friends with me. I learnt to communicate better for when I needed to contact different people, like the participants, club members and people in CSE or other universities. It is important how you write or type in the email and Whatsapp so that you can express your views accurately and suitably. Both positions actually give you more chance to practise and learn about archery, not just about shooting skills but also knowledge on equipment and how you can adjust and fix the equipment which suits him/her most. Tuning the equipment is like changing the strength of your weapons of your characters in mobile/computer games. I really learnt a lot in these positions and this jeong, and I consider these lessons priceless. Curtis, Programme Secretary
I have experienced a lot during this year. I’m so glad that I have stepped out of my comfort zone and decided to be an Exco. These valuable experiences made me become a more independent and organized person. I’ve also learnt how to communicate and cooperate with others. More importantly, I’ve met my fellow jongmates who are really supportive. Finally, I want to sincerely thank those who have helped me throughout this year, especially the coach. Being in this club has been so important to me that I fear I wouldn’t have the words to express it. From giving me a new set of extremely talented friends to testing my skills in designing through stress and deadlines, this club has given me all. In all honesty, my current post wasn’t even one of my choices. However, due to the language barrier I had to roll with it, and I haven’t regretted my decision once. It has been a valuable experience and I can’t wait to see what the future of Archery Club, HKUSU holds.

其中一個上莊最大嘅收穫係增強 design 嘅 skills。喺莊期入面整過 poster、莊相、片等等。我由當初只係識用 iPad 啲 apps 去到今日可以 接 freelance 做，唔多唔少都係因為喺 Club 入面有唔少出設嘅機會，增 強我嘅 sense 同 technical skills。 做 Pub Sec 呢個位都俾咗我好多同莊友相處嘅機會。大大小小嘅 events 都要出設（或者整片）。最難忘嘅一次係 O-Day 嘅 D-Game 片。寫劇本同拍片嘅過程都牽涉討論同合作，拍片嘅時候又有好多搞笑 嘅事。呢次機會俾咗我好多同莊友相處嘅時光。 莊友都係莊入面一樣超重要嘅嘢！好開心大家一直都肯比屎大家，肯花 時間同莊友相處，維繫關係。好多人話上莊嘅價值在於莊友，唔係做莊 務學返嚟嘅嘢（因為做 intern 學到仲多 lmao）。咁我覺得呢個莊就達 到咗呢個價值啦！ Samuel, Publicity Secretary
Hugo, Past Representative
With my long standing passion, I served the Club again this year as a past representative after the end of my period of duty as a General Secretary last year. The duty as a past representative has given me a totally different experience of “sheung jong”, from a doer to an advisor (though I would still help in different events). To supervise the current Excos, I have been giving advice based on their progress and performance dealing with the affairs of the Club. This makes me understand that being a supervisor is not easy at all. The job can be challenging when it comes to monitoring various events of the Club, at the same time the progress of the committee. In addition, throughout the year I have sometimes dealt with conflicts between current and past Excos. I always believe that the smooth running of the Club depends on both the effort from the Excos and also a warm and friendly atmosphere. My job gives me a group of new friends as well.There is great difference in personalities and characters between the Excos of two sessions, but both of them are friendly and interesting. The time we have gone through and shared with each other will always be one of the brightest moments I have had in my university life. I have gained and attained much in Archery Club, HKUSU. My paid efforts may not end with the best results but countless precious memories. Here I wish a prolonged smooth running of the Club in the future.

IUAT
The Inter-university Archery Tournament co-organised by HKU, HKBU, CUHK, EdUHK, PolyU and HKUST had been successfully held at Pak Shek Kok Sports Centre of the EdUHK on 17th March, 2018. Archery may seem to be an individual sport, but IUAT has helped foster friendships among the different universities, not only among the organising committee, but also between competitors, thus we hope to meet you in next year’s IUAT, this means a promise between you and us! We would further like to thank all of the participants from our club and a special thanks to our Coach for his continued support to our archers. We wish our members the best of luck for the future IUAT.

TRAINING COURSES Our club offers various training courses that aim to encourage the students of HKU to learn and practice archery, as well as teaches the art of sportsmanship. After the completion of the courses, the former trainees have the oppurtunity to be elected as U-team members and participate in various competitions whilst representing HKU. This year we offered classes B and C in the Summer, D and E at the start of the first semester, and are offering classes H, I and J for semester break and the beginning of the second semester. The club would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to all the members who helped out in successfully organising these courses, and of course, our biggest thanks goes to our Coach, Mr. Lam Siu Tong for giving so much effort in training our future archers.

O PERIOD AND REG DAY The Orientation period is a very crucial time for the club to gain attraction so as it recruit new members during the Registration day. This year our Publicity Secretary, Samuel, designed and published a website specifically for O period, thus garnering many praise. The Reg day was held in August 9-10, 2018. The Archery Club, HKUSU booth was set up in SU building. The Excos worked very hard to decorate the booth and worked harder to recruit new members. Many leaflets were distributed in those days. Active engagement was seen between the freshmen and our Excos. We are extremely pleased to see many new faces in RBTC due to this recruitment period and hope that Archery will continue to become a popular sport.

ORIENTATION DAY
The O-day of Archery Club, HKUSU was successfully held on the 23rd of September, with the help of all the members and helpers who came to the event and made it so joyful! This year, the theme was to solve a murder mystery with various games designed to have the members engaging with each other. We also had an exclusive video revealing the mystery at the end. The members were seen to have been quite active throughout the event, thus making it a funfilled occasion. We, the club Exco’s feel extremely glad to have overseen the event and hope the members enjoyed it thorougly.

SUPERPASS The club has always held two superpasses for each semester. This year, so did we. The first superpass events were held on 24 April and 20 Novembers, 2018, respectively. Pigs were chopped, red packets distributed and lucky draws were held. The members wrote on red paper to wish themselves the best of luck for the final exams. Both the superpasses ran smoothly. The coach was present in both the occasions, helping us whenever need be. These events provided everyone with the opurtunity to bridge the gap between the Excos and regular members of the club. We hope everyone enjoyed these events, as much as we did.

OPEN CONTEST The 28th HKU Archery Open Contest was successfully conducted on the 28th October, 2018. This is undoubdatdly one of the biggest events of the Archery Club, HKUSU. We are pleased to inform everyone that just like previous years, we were again sponsored by the Hong Kong Archery Services Company and Sunplay. The contest attracts archers from various universities and walks of life who participate their level best. This year the contestants showed great sportsmanship and skill despite the scorching hot weather. It is an immense hounour for the club to be able to host this event. It acts as a means to bring many archers together to showcase their talents and we hope this event is held successfully for years to come.

SOCIAL MEDIA Throughout our session, we have maintained the our club’s facebook and instagram pages. This year, we changed our instagram page from a private account to a business one, so as to keep track of our engagement with the audience. We have also regularly updated our website for various upcoming and news of our events.
