30th Anniv ersary

Words from the Editor This year is the 30th Anniversary of Archery Club, HKUSU. This means that out members have been sowing and plowing since 30 years ago, ledding to what we garner now. During the little research for the 30th special section, I was amused and amazed by seeing how things changed. From orientation camp to orientation day; from the changes of the pratice venues and the stories behind; from what was started by one of the cabinets such as training course to the more mature system that we maintain till now; from two days of practice to now 3; to be surprised by how strong some of our members are, participating in world class competitions; to be inspired by the letter to the principle, fighting for our benefits and sadly, traced what good things might have been lost over time.

This newsletter does not seem thick, yet it is made from countless nights of hard work and dedication. In fact, every page on its own is extremely time consuming and stressful, from proofreading, graphics to design, type-setting to choosing photos, and having times where you do not have any inspirations.

I hereby thank all my “Jong mates� who helped with the content, especially Tommy and Wincy who always lend a helping hand. I hope that all of you would enjoy reading this newsletter.

Foreword I am pleased to introduce the newsletter of Archery Club, HKUSU in session 2015- 2016 to you. We are coming to the end of our session year. With archers having performed excellently in competitions, and many new members joining our big family, it was a successful year for the Club. I am confident that new comers will share the same spirit as their senior archers in striving for better skill in the sport. Last November, the Club had the unique opportunity to hold the 25th HKU Archery Open Contest with the support of Hong Kong Archery Services Company.

Participants truly enjoyed, and I want to thank Wincy Mak, person-in-charge of the contest, for her superb job. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude towards our coaches Mr. Lam Siu Tong and Mr. Chui Chun Man. They have continually given valuable guidance and support to our archers. I also want to thank my fellow executive committee members, for your hard work. It is my honour to have been able to work with you through the tough but joyful year. Finally, this newsletter is genuinely the masterpiece of the editor together with other members in the executive committee through days and nights. It sums up our session year, as well as the 30-year history of the Club. Hope you enjoy it!

年時間不算短，但回想起來上莊的一刻就像是 昨天的事，轉眼間一年莊期只剩下一個多月。 一年莊期中有甚麼得着呢？有人成長了，有人學會 待人處事，各有不同。而我會說，我得到了寶貴的經 歷，上莊這特別的經驗，是在人生中其他地方都找不 到的。中學時搞活動會有老師協助，大學上莊則所有 事都要一班莊友自行決定，自行承擔。活動由準備至 舉行意見會有分歧，會有困難，但最終都解決，當中 的辛酸只有一起努力的莊友才真正了解。所以感謝一 直以來一起努力的莊友們。最後下莊們，祝你們上莊 愉快，在莊期中找到自己的得著。

Dayday Internal Vice Chairperson

rientation day is one of important events of the Archery Club every year. Not only does orientation day provide chances to new members to study and learn archery, but also it gives existing members to make new friends with new member so that everyone can exchange their views and values. I feel so lucky and honored that the 30th Orientation Day could launch fluently and successfully, which can let members to know and understand more with each other, but also I make lots of new friends. I hope in the future I can join more interesting and exciting orientation day that held by 31st Cabinet so that it can give me a more surprising and fruitful university life.

解做EV可以Champ 過做Chair? 因爲可以搞Open Con 囉！:P 話說咁啱我Year 1想學下射箭，又咁啱想試下 上莊，所以就咁啱膽粗粗上左港大箭會EV呢個位啦～上莊 一年，有得有失，有喜有悲。雖然有時會好多嘢做，有時 要拎多少少私人時間出嚟做莊務，有時又會同莊友意見不 合，但當你慢慢完成每一樣你覺得無咩可能嘢事嘅時候，個 種成功感，真係不可言喻。今年我搞左兩個活動，Archery Tag 同Open Con。Archery Tag 係想試下新嘢，好彩反應都唔 錯。Open Con 係多嘢做，但係做嘅過程當中，亦都可以學到 好多嘢，學點去搞好一個活動，而且做「香港大學射箭公開 賽」嘅PIC，真係講出嚟個名都威過人。莊友日對夜對，拗 撬一定有，但最重要係大家一齊傾一齊決解。呢一年入面， 我成左長好多，成熟左好多，計嚟計去，都係「得」大過「 失」，一句到尾：EV 無敵，上莊無悔。

t is my pleasure to be one of the committee member of Archery club 2015-2016. Being the programme secretary, I had learnt how to organise, make decision, make arrangement and the most important is how to communicate with others. I had organised 7 training courses throughout this year. Without the help our coach and my jongmates, they could not work out that successful. I remembered that I had hesitated a period of time whether to join the cabinet as the practicum schedule is tight and studies are more difficult to a nursing year three student. I decided to join eventually since I did not want to regret later in my life. And my jongmates let me know that I made a correct decision. Being with them is one of the memorable memory in life. There are many ups and downs throughout this year. Although we may have argues during meetings, we support and cheer up each other during tough times and they listen to me during angry times; we work as a team to organise an event, and feedback from participants are good. It comes to an end for this session of committee and is the start of the next cabinet. I believe that the upcoming committee will do better. Add oil!!!!.

初選擇加入射箭學會源於對射箭的興趣，而成為莊員 更是希望改變自己和獲取經驗。雖然作為財務秘書沒 有自己主管的活動，但也要協助處理日常和各活動的事項， 在這年莊期裏經歷了大大小小的活動，自己也在莊友身上學 到許多，相信在將來亦會派上用場。莊期將至，我想借此感 謝林兆棠教練一直以來的付出。在十幾年來，林兆棠教練一 直不辭勞苦為射箭學會付出，提起了包括我在內的會員對射 箭的興趣，也為會員樹立榜樣，令箭會得以持續發展。

eing an exco member is such an inspiring experience.

Sure you get to learn about archery, but it’s so much more than just that. People have always said the work is difficult, but it really is rewarding. In just a year I have changed in ways I never thought possible. When you have the chance to be on the organizing team behind the functions you have always enjoyed, you’d learn to appreciate everything and think in ways that are much more mature than before, not to mention the friends you’ll meet along the way. Hard work pays off. 搏 盡無悔！

Cecilia Publicity Secretary

eing the publicity secretary of archery club is a most arduous but rewarding journey in my life. The most difficult part of it is to be sustainable in creativity. To be creative, one must have enthusiasm in designing. There would definitely be times when all inspiration is somehow dried up and the publicity secretary is left alone with piles of pieces of work unfinished. But no matter how idealess or desperate I am, I would strive to get started, bit by bit, and when I finally see my own brainchild, I feel reinvigorated again. Another major part of my job is to maintain the website of our club.

This is a completely new job to me. Not surprisingly, I have encountered many technical problems in the process. So I would suggest some professional training of website design before taking the job :) Finally, the publicity secretary will be in charge of orientation period. This is the first formal function encountered by a new EXCO and also the major source of income of our club. One need to be prepared for any mistakes in the process. The best policy is to always think ahead, from managing human resources to preparing materials.

am glad that I had took up this post, as I got to meet the nine of them, from different backgrounds and faculty and made good friends. Also, the past one year of exco life is highly rewarding and there were far more things for me to learn then what I have expected. As the major designer, designing is a painful process, from coming up with an idea and executing it.

Yet, as I start to realize the message is of utmost importance while graphics are aids and with the help of Ceci, things became less demanding.The return of joy and satisfaction of publicizing the work was huge. As an exco, I am exposed to numerous opportunities to learn new things such as looking for sponsors, communicating with printing companies, going out for meetings. There was once a hardship that is tough for me to endure, yet made me reflected deeply. There were definitely a lot of ups and downs and challenges in the last year, yet during the process, there are many things for me to take away with. Besides, I became more devoted with Archery.

Hereby, I sincerely thank my jong mates who beared with me.

his is my second year as the Ex-co of the Club. Being able to work with two cabinets with different styles had been a very interesting and fun experience. These two years had given me lots of headache and stomachach, yet I enjoyed every bit of it, no matter if it was harsh, intense, fun or exciting.

There had been several new attempts on activities and the ways we arranged them, although not all of them were a Useless huge success, we did discovered some advantages to keep as Team Captain well as improvements to learn. As the team captain this year, and Past Rep I am glad to have my teammates, have always been standing by and supporting me. The team had taken extensive training for competitions, including extra physical training and specially designed training routine. Taking a different view on the Club’s business and competitions than last year, it had been a challenge to arrange teammates for inter-university competitions without hindering their own development, after all, having too many higher division archers would be hard to form teams for the competitions. As the time for AGM is coming, I wish the coming cabinet to have a fun and joyful year of office, and I am looking forward to the new innovations brought by them.

Mr Chui Chun Man T his year, Mr Chui Chun Man “魔王” joined us and will be responsible for Tuesday and Thursday pratice while Mr Lam responsible for Saturdays. We have conducted an interview and let’s see what they think!

Q: As the Hong Kong record keeper of FITA Round, 90M, 70M and 30M target, please advise us how can we improve in the performance in archery?

Chui: (To improve performance in archery) is mainly to set an attainable target for yourselves, for example, the number of arrow shots per day, total scores for one round of 36 arrows, two-round total score etc.. Raise the target slowly day-by-day, the scores will be uplifted to a higher level and may even break the HK record.

Q: Why do you choose coach as your career?

Chui: Others may think archery is a boring sport. However, once you get started with it and try to break the target set by yourselves, you will feel not conceded that you are incapable of reaching the target, and you will have great satisfaction when you make it. The spirit of “surpass yesterday’s self ” in is fascinating to me. Moreover, archery is a relatively a static sport that you need to calm down and refrain being impatient and agitated while shooting. I appreciate the tranquil mood/peaceful mind brought by archery, and so I love it.

Q : What is your expectation on our club?

Chui: I hope that every member can have good performance (in archery), surpass the level of previous university archery players and become dominant in the university archery sector. Does it sound seems too aggressive?

Coach Mr Lam siu TonG Q: How long have you been the coach of the Archery Club?

Tong: I have started (from being a coach) since 1999.

Q: What changes have you seen over the past years?

Tong: Basically not much has been changed. The field was relocated to a better site, and practicing time was increased from 8 hrs to 12 hrs per week.

Q: Why have you stayed with the Archery Club for such a long time?

Tong: No special reason.

Q: What have left you with the deepest impression in the Archery Club?

Tong: Working hard every day, especially in the past when working without another coach. It is now hard to identify what is impressive, as years passed by, many things have become ordinary and routine. Starting to work as a coach at the beginning, new things were more memorable. Students getting outstanding scores in competition were also memorable.

Q: What is your expectation towards the future?

Tong: As the cabinet is new each year, what we can do is to do our best based on the resources available, therefore, my expectation is to keep the Club steady. Our goal is not to nurture Olympic archers but to teach our students from the beginning to join competitions and gain satisfaction through competing. It is fine as long as students love archery and get good results. The expectation on the cabinet is more important as I am not the one leading the development of the Archery Club. It is important to let students gain experience, learn from mistakes and develop themselves.

What I can do may be limited but helping the younger generation will make me satisfied.

Q :Any words for the members?

Tong: Grab the chance to shoot while you still can as there will be no time for archery after starting to work.

Friendly match 27.12.2015 O

ur Friendly Match with the Archery Clubs of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, and the Hong Kong Management Association K S Lo College was successfully held on Dec 27, 2015 at the Robert Black Tennis Court. Starting 9 a.m., the five teams competed in 3 different games, namely Bingo, 130, and Fast and Furious.

With the custom made target faces, archers were required to shoot specific patterns, specific scores, or hit all targets as quickly as possible. At the end of the exciting competition, participants were given the Club’s 30th anniversary metal pins and files as soveniers. Our Club came first in the match and was rewarded with arm guards, the Hong Kong Management Association K S Lo College came second with just 2 points difference and was rewarded with arrow pullers. The Friendly Match concluded in a joyful harmonic manner, and we look forward to visiting other institutes for matches in the future.

n the invitation of HKUST, six of our archers travelled a long way to the campus of HKUST in Clear Water Bay to join a friendly match with them on 29th March, 2015. Besides ordinary competition rules which we are used to, HKUST introduced a new set of rules which mixed black jack and archery together. Archers of both sides enjoyed a lot and the match definitely foster the friendship between archers in the two universities. We thank HKUST for arranging such a fantastic and creative match. We hope there will be more friendly matches with different universities in the future.

IUAT 2014-2015 Champion T

he Inter-University Archery Tournament (IUAT) is held once every year by universities in Hong Kong for universities’ archers. It allows them to compete and share their own valuable experience with one another. Last year, co-organized

by BU, CUHK, HKU, HKUST, IEd, and PolyU, IUAT 2014-2015 was held on 21st June in Ngau Chi Wan Park Archery Range. Besides the six universities in the organizing committee, we had archers from the Open University of Hong Kong joining the tournament, making the competition more exciting. Unfortunately, the weather on that day was not stable. The team events, which were at the end of the tournament, had to be cancelled.

Nevertheless, our archers, in the heavy rain, all fought to their own last event, showing their sportsmanship and passion in the sport. As for the result, archers from HKU had put great effort and shown superb performance, regaining the overall champion. This year, IUAT 2015-2016 will be held on 19th-20th March. We believe that all archers will perform as good as last year.

Training Course

T

raining course aims to raise interest in archery among university students and introduce archery skills and basic archery knowledge such as some safety rules.

Participants after joining the whole course may be selected as our University Team. This year we have in total 7 archery training courses organized. With the support and help from all committee members and all helpers, the courses all worked out successfully. It is great to hear feedback from participants that they were satisfied with the course. I have to especially thank our coach Mr. Lam Siu Tong put in a lot of effort into the classes. The course would not be successful without him.

OPeriod& T Reg Day

he O Period this year is from July to October, and Registration Day on 13,14th of August. The promotion was successful and we have managed to recruit over 200 new members into our family of HKU archers. Many of them had their first experience of archery by registering for the Orientation Day and the training course we offered this year. We had a booth during reg day and also set up a counter in Hui Oi Chow and outside main library for the first and second week respectively. To avoid confusion, we always marked out the change in location in mass email and orally informed our new members and other interested students. We heavily promoted our club and update our locations and news on facebook and mass email. Leaflets with our contacts were given out to introduce our club and activities. Many came back to us during O period. Drawstring bag and file was given out during Reg’ Day as welfare and we had over 60 freshmen registering as a member. The experience in Registration Day booth and at O period counter was unforgettable. We got to meet a lot of new faces. There were times of difficulty, such as our booth was located in the shade and difficult for us to be noticed by freshman. We resolved by set up extra lighting. The Reg Day and O period were surely an encouraging start of the new academic year.

Orientation Day T

he Orientation Day was held on 27th September in a great success.

It was indeed a genuine chance for freshmen to develop an interest in archery and meet new friends with mutual interest. This year we had found several sponsored products for O Day participants. Apart from the material rewards, the participants can found the O Day very rewarding spiritually.

The ice-breaking games helped the freshmen meet each other, making a good start of the day, then followed by even more exciting mass games. An archery experience session was also included to give the freshmen a taste of this sports which is new to them in the university. The highlight went to the detective game with a carefully planned story. The D game video at last received a lot of positive comments. We hope the freshmen can enjoy our O Day and wish for a greater success in the coming year.

he two Superpasses had been held on 21/8/2015 and 17/11/2015 respectively.

This year, we had our coach Lam Shu Tong and Chui Chun Man to deliver red pocket to our members and bless for their academic result.

Fai Chun was provided for members to write down their goal in academic and archery. There were also roasted pig chopping and lucky draw section, which create lots of funny moments.We also gave a surprise to our Publication Secretary Wing and celebrated her birthday in first Superpass Last but not least, we enjoyed dinner together and had a joyful conversation. Overall, the bonding between members and our Club was strenthened though these two night.

ARCHERYTAG H

ave you ever played archery? Have you ever played dodge-ball? If you say yes for both, then have you ever played them at the same time?

This year as one of the social function, we introduce this activity which is becoming more and more popular in Hong Kong - Archery Tag, with the rules of dodge-ball but uses bow and arrows, patented in America. Before the game, a briefing session was held to make sure all the players understand the rules and safety measures. The points of the arrows used are careful wrapped with a layer of thick plastic. Moreover, the participants are required to wear a comprehensive face mask and an armguard. So the game is pretty safe enough. Even an archery beginner can enjoy this fascinating activity as well. The Archery Tag activity was successfully held on 12th October, giving a good chance for our members to gather and relax. We really had a great time and a lot of fun. Join us next time!

The 25th Open Co test

his year, the 25th HKU Archery Open Contest was successfully held on 8th November, 2015.

Nearly 150 archers were attracted to join us with this remarkable competition.The HKU Archery Open Contest is surely our highlight every year. It is a large-scaled renowned local competition which is accredited by the Hong Kong Archery Association.

As always, we aim to promote our club and to popularize sports archery in Hong Kong Apart from the individual match, this year’s contest has got a team section, adding more fun to the event. We also received sponsor from Hong Kong Archery Services Company and Sunplay. We are honoured to provide a platform for all archers in Hong Kong to participate in a formal contest so as to seek self-advancement and exchange archery skills with each other. Therefore, we will continue to organize this great event in future, as we have a part to play for local archery sports.
