RecQrd Today's galloping rush into the future, into a world of staggering population, of unbelievable technological progress and of invented heights of human achievement will look foolishly empty if the past whom which it all came is ignored.

The Church too is being urged by Pope John Paul to eye the arrival of the Third Millennium of the Christian Era with new strength and p rpose. Yet it is only by the energy of the faith of the past that the Church of today stands ready to meet the cha le ge of tomorrow.

A more than usual attention therefore is paid in this issue to the jubilee of the completion of Geraldton cathedral. tis more than neo-tourist curiosity about yet a other church buildinq likely to rove popu ar to the tourist coaches.

The Cathedral of St Francis Xavier stands out in the city of Geraldton as a place which proclaims tbt God is central in our lives, that the worship of God is why we are on earth.

BishopJ!ickey said this last weekend as St Francis Xavier Cathedral celebrated the jubilee of its Below: St Fl'lllncis Xavier Cathedl'llll as it appears completion today.

"In many 20th Clltury cities the focal point is usually a civic building such as the Parliament House in Canberra.

"Here we already have a qigious building in the city and it looks as the most important building in the city and it looks as if tha will never be challenged.

"We are grateful that it stands then with its dome pointing to the sky, brooding over the city of Geraldton like the Holy Spirit brooclini over the waters of creation, reminding us that we are creatures of God called to worship and love c id.

"In this place we assemble and in this place we ca"y out those acts of worship."

For the jubilee of its completion Geraldton cathedl'llll ,_ has four windows featuring the foir evangelists and each taking advantage of the light from the four points of the compass.

Return of the soloist ...

Mary Haydock returned to Geraldton last Sundav to recall that at the 1938 opening she was a Stella \1aris school· girl soloist in the choir conducted by Dom Stephen More no OSB. The Benedictme composer made friends with the Hav· dock family during his extended stay in Geraldton and baptised Stephen Hay· dock shortlv after the cathedral · opening ceremony.

Salute to Moreno Dom Stephen Moreno OSB, talented organist and composer of New Norcia Abbey, spent a long time in Geraldton prepar· ing a choir that made the opening ceremony of the cathedr I an historically memorable event.

He also gave a p blic organ recital in the town's Radio Theatre.

Dom Moreno died in

1953 at the age of 64 while en route to Spain at the invitation of that government to p blish his music.

To honour his contribu· lion to Geraldton a concert of his _.ks incl ding Masses, motets, responsories and Marian hymns was presented in the cathedral on Monday night

with Brother Gerald Crooks directing a choir combining the Geraldton Choral Society and a n mber of church choirs, the organist being Re¥ Alex Scutt (An lican).

The choir was pictured at their rehearsal last Sun· day that concluded three months of weekly practi· ces for the occasion.
