Record

For those who look on birthday excitement in inverse proportion to the number of years they have scored, the return of yet another Pentecost remembrance could be just another plodding church anniversary.

Not so for the Church and definitely not so for Pope John Paul as he plunges with characteristic single-mindedness into his Marian year, stretched to 14 months so that its Pentcostal beginnings can be capped off with its Assumption conclusion.

Australia stood in the queue fo many years to experience the hitherto strange concept of a pope who wanted to be seen and heard in every noo and cranny of his Church. We caught at least a glimpse of a man who put God first in his life with an overpowering energy that makes an impression in the most secular quarters.

Barely catching his breath in a travel schedule that still pounds through South America, later the USA, Germany, his native Poland he is every bit the paradox of a man in a hurry to cross the world's oceans but equally determined to ponder and probe 20th century civilisation to its roots in the light of the Church's heology.

It is the paradox of Pentecost itself. Outside the clamour of the streets crowds, the hoarse oices of the aposties struggling to be eard in an unsympathetic environment; inside, a mood of sile ce. prayer and recollection, receptive to the Spirit who can cha ge the face of the earth.

Three hours after my friend Regina died, the doorbell of her home began ringing as neighbours and friends stopped by to offer condolences to her family.

Each brought a casserole, a batch of scones or a tray of meat.

As the food began to overflow the kitchen counters Margaret, one of Regina's daughters, cried out: "Where were all these people when we really needed this stuff?"

Regina had endured a long battle with

cancer. The family often kept individual six-hour shifts at the hospital so Regina would

At our church last Sunday, World Communications Day, we were urged to attend a local Anglican church and pray with our 'separated' brethren.
