MEANINGOfMARY'S DIVINEANDHUMAN MATERNITY

Inhissermonontheopeningdayof theecumenicalcouncil,HisHoliness PopeJohnXXIIIplacedthecouncil"undertheauspicesoftheVirginMotherof God,whosematernaldignityiscommemoratedonthisfeast."

Thefeastofthatday,October11,was thatoftheDivineMaternityofMary, whichstemsimmediatelyfromtheacts oftheCouncilofEphesus.Thatcouncil, in431A.D.definedthetruththat"Mary isMotherofGod,"andthusprotected thepeopleofChristfromdividingHim intoadivinepersonandahumanperson.

Butwiththeopeningofthecurrent council,Christendom wasdividedoverthe personoftheVirgin Mary, andhadbeen forcenturies.

TheProtestantfearis thatMarymaynothavealreadyusurpedthatrolein Catholicismwhichbelongs toGodalone.TheScriptures, argueProtestants, aresilentaboutanImmaculateConception(Mary's freedomfromoriginalsin) andanAssumption(Mary's bodyaswellassoulisnow inheavenwithChrist).Yet theChurchofRomesolemnlydeclaredthesewere truthsrevealedbyGod.

Protestantsnowdread thattheRomanCatholic ChurchmayproclaimasdivinelyrevealedthatMary is"co-redemptrix"andmediatrixofallgraces,asso-

ciatedwiththeoneMediatoroftheNewTestament, JesusChrist, inthesalvationofallmen. Itdoesnotseemlikely anydogmaticdefinitions willcomefromthecouncil.SuchCatholicexperts asFrancesFatherYves Congar,0.P.,andGermany'sFatherHansKueng regardthemediationof Maryasnotyetmaturein theconsienceoftheChurch, andaddthatadefinition atthistimewouldbeafurtherobstacletoChristian unity.
